Yes, the power of growing up in NYC at the birth of Hip Hop while these women reigned was an indescribable experience and I submit @mclyte's Self Destruction verse killed all other MCs #HipHopEd
Shouts out to artists like @JanelleMonae who are envisioning a particular freedom & futurity & model #afrofuturist brilliance for the coming #HipHopEd generation!
Women in Rap created a platform for me as a Hip-Hop scholar! I live it, listen to female rappers daily, and draw strength from them during oppressive times. #HipHopEd
Thinking about all the women who contribute to hip hop but whose names we don't know because our culture doesn't value social or emotional labor. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd honors @gjladson for her willingness to share her wisdom in a way that allowed us to grow and shine. Youâve written the book on our work and left blank pages for our story #womenshistorymonth

Word... Vibe Magazine and The Source were powered by dope women to consider just a few. And regardless of feelings of Mona Scott, she is Hip Hop #HipHopEd

We can uplift these platforms & highlight their contributions to the culture, but we NEED to also highlight how platforms like The Source drove & perpetuated a culture of mysogyny and dragged any woman in the mud if they dared to speak up about it... #HipHopEd

I honestly believe she's more on the empowering side... We're watching her transformation and growth. She discusses how youth encourage her to grow, think and watch herself more often. She's in her process. I think that's beautiful and very human. #HipHopEd
A few months ago I asked one of my female students who Jay-Z was..After she couldn't tell me, I made her research. When I finally asked her after, her response: "Beyonce's husband" #HipHopEd
One of my current favorite MCs is @SnowThaProduct. As a Mexican American, I just wanna give her props. Love to see strong latinas in the music scene. Ps I love when she code-switches #HipHopEd
Georgie porgie pudding pie, kiss the girls and make them cry!! #hiphoped that song was a deep emotional joint. I slept on it til I was old enough to get the message
I wanna salute Lady of Rage who inspired me to write my first rhyme and come up with my first rap name 'Man of Rage' (yeah I know) after I heard 'Afro Puffs' #HipHopEd
And Monie Love was not only an inspiration to me growing up, but gave me my first ever mixtape placement when I was juuuust finding my footing as an emcee. That vote of confidence from her meant the whole wide world. #HipHopEd
100% it's the contradiction of Hip Hop itself right. Women were really the engines behind those publications, but they needed #metoo as much as anyone #HipHopEd

Come August 25th it will be the 20th Anniversary that Lauryn Hill had released her one and only album the Mis-Education of Lauryn Hill. Before there was social media her music made waves bringing her 5 #Grammys and authentically #1 on the billboards. #HipHopEd
Yessss, SALUTE HER! I rocked a âfro in 4th grade and the kids used to tease me. I didnât care at all because âAfro Puffsâ had me feeeeeling myself. #HipHopEd

I teach in DC @ UDC, we had a moving discussion re #MarchForOurLives, day after march & how gun violence has impacted so many, yet vast majority of in class weren't really hip to the march as they were too bust dealing with life & not plugged in like that. #HipHopEd
I agree. I really like Cardi, I think its empowering how she has managed her career, set goals and crushed them, and sustained a buzz from a hit to establish herself as a legit Mc and artist #hiphoped
I want to personally honor @mathsmarti who I've witnessed her growth as a Hip-Hop and Mathematics Scholar. I honor your commitment to the culture and your craft. Thank you for your support from day one #HipHopEd#WomensHistoryMonth
What they needed was the support of other women in the industry (instead of folks jockeying for their position and/or maintaining their position by remaining quiet) and for the industry to purge itself of these parasites. But that wasn't the case.. đ€·đŸââïž

If you aren't following @Ed2BeFree you are missing something special. Thank you for the images and the tweets and the work you do everyday of the week #HipHopEd#WomensHistoryMonth
We will have a special 20th anniversary chat in August to honor the great L-Boogie but we can also thank Lauryn Hill for giving Hip-Hop a great body of work #HipHopEd#WomensHistoryMonth
Indeed. Makes me recall Card's comments about vixens. These were the sisters who could/should have provided a safety net. But I give some grace to the extent many of them were just trying to survive themselves. #HipHopEd
Every single woman who contributes their ideas, thoughts, learnings, opinions to this #HipHopEd thread...shout out to yâall. I learn something new every week, thank you for teaching us!

Just putting women's faces on stage isn't enough to challenge patriarchy. We have to talk about ways we can shift hip hop culture to make it more inclusive, safer, and more supportive of and for women & non-binary folks. #hiphoped

As men we need to listen and learn how to be better advocates concerning the issues that disproportionately impact women. Not because they are our mothers, daughters, sisters etc, but simply because it is RIGHT #HipHopEd

Take note: owning two copies of The Miseducation doesnât buy you a gold-plated âally passâ anymore. How are you truly making space for women in hip hop? Itâs gonna take more than a perfunctory shout out on Intâl Womenâs Day. đ #HipHopEd
I don't agree with that.
As a person who grew up during the peak/height of gangsta rap out West & spent quite a lot of time in that environment,I can see individuals from all angles. The line of thinking expressed here is often rooted in respectability politics (cont) #HipHopEd
(cont.) Classism, & puritanical ideologies.
We want women to operate in this space but only how "we" see fit.
I don't believe that Cardis image or her music "takes away from her message". She has quite a bit to say and does so in a way that resonates with her fan base. #HipHopEd
It's not enough to ride for women in the presence of women. The real change comes when we check other men for how they treat and regard women while they are not around #NoWaterCoolerTalk#hiphoped
Ditto to the inspiration and message from @MoniqueWMorris! Having the opportunity to here her speak at the Women in School Leadership conference was a true delight. You did that sis, your book keeps us woke. #HipHopEd#WomensHistoryMonth

A way in is to invite students to bring the work of their favorite female MCs into the classroom. Make space for curiosity, exploration, community--no matter your content area. #HipHopEd

Stop boxing women Hip-Hop artists in a box of evaluating them only against one another. Donât be afraid to say that their albums are simply dope and often better than the last brotherâs album you bumped #HipHopEd
I actually didn't take his message to mean a person's public presentation skewed their message. If so, I also dont agree with that whatsoever. I will also not pretend to support everything Cardi says or her delivery just to maintain my feminist card #HipHopEd
