Hi Purti! Really good to connect with you here. I was just in China for 2 weeks - sorry I did not make it down to you
A1: Someone who who is open to ideas & listens to others, a life-long learner, open to collaboration and sharing of ideas
A1. Communicates clearly, shares ideas and knowledge,
I am a global education leader partly because I have worked & lived in 6 countries BUT....it is not all about that...what is it?
i think the qualities needed are the same for any leader, but offer a global perspective
Q1a - open, understanding, patient, courageous, learns from challenge/failure, networker, tech savvy, flexible
It is about your interactions with other Ts outside just your school, learning from others and sharing ideas
I wonder what you mean by 'global perspective'?
A1 One who can strongly articulate the reasons n benefits for global connect. I would like to but can't yet.
critical thinker creative collaborative connected culture builder and communicator
Q1b I consider myself part of a global network. Whether that's in some part leadership depends on the project/context.
A1. Understanding different culture and different regions needs and requirement and challenges they face
Never thought about it Think everyone has the capacity, just needs to be aware & willing to learn. Don't know what u don't know.
A1 Willingness & courage to share practice. This is rarer than I'd like in education. The internet has made collaboration global.
A1: someone willing to try new things and share experiences. Not afraid of mistakes. Leadership is about behaviour not your title
A1 No borders or obstacles to learning, creating connections, being flexible, initiating ideas.
A1 One who has collective teacher efficacy in the heart in what they do
totally agree. Learning from educators/leaders from around the world, helps keep our practice fresh
G'morning - Bernadette here from sunny Melbourne - at least for moment
Does a global education leader also need a positive attitude towards solving global issues....do you have this?
smartest person in the room is the room. We focus upon this in all our PL
Good mornin' Jarrad from Perth. Let the sharing begin!
A1 maybe it's simply understanding the flow of info and impact may go beyond national borders. Embracing that.
is a global education leader someone seen as a leader at a global level? Or a local leader who thinks globally?
it's making connections both globally and locally
A1 Someone who is driven by the q'n: how might we improve learning for all through global connections?
One of my favourite quotes! Thanks for sharing here
Yes supporting other edus/sharing prac may mean across the globe not down the hall!
this is the essence of creativity and failing forward
A1: a global leader braves life outside of the bubble of school and is in tune with what is real in the world | Connected |
I think everyone has the capacity to be a global educational leader, I still consider myself as a beginning teacher
Great Q! I would say a leader who thinks globally
A1.The quality of global educational leader is to have the vision to take schools into the unknown
A1: shares, listens, is flexible, prepared to learn, make strong decisions based on best practice and needs of others
is now trending in Australia, ranking 3
postive attitude and eagerness to connect, at all hours and across all borders! My PLN is spread far and wide!
I think it is someone who looks globally and is trying to make a difference to all!
so do you think everyone has the capacity to lead? Can anyone be a(n effective / global / empowering) leader?
I was thinking about this.. someone who is innovative in their approach to global issues and contexts.
I would suggest it's both. Connection is at the heart of leading. A new paradigm is emerging
Oh! I like that definition
Nice thinking Debs. I like the second bit.
A1: I also think a global leader helps others connect. Asks BIG questions. Takes risks. Brings others along for the ride!
and in addition participates. It's more than thinking it is on the doing
Yes! great answer https://t.co/vN1tgZhS5K
A1: I also think a global leader helps others connect. Asks BIG questions. Takes risks. Brings others along for the ride!
A1 and Ed Leader is a risk taker ... willing to try something before the "research" says it is safe to try.
I know both kinds: those who lead in an online space for instance, & those who take a global view of local.

A2. Connecting . In China the Wechat group works very well to communicate . We have a chat group with IB office /coordinator grp
A2 digital tech has allowed us to think and act globally for the first time in history. This wouldn't be a topic without it!
A2 tech is an extension of ourselves. Used well, we can create positive impact beyond our local context. Sharing, supporting...
yes, important characteristics for many reasons. We try to instil in students too. A good leader has a growth mindset
i teach global approach to actions=think impact on world? Global leader thinks of their contr/impact on the world
we need value and build learning networks beyond our boarder
I've been labeled not a leader & a leader! Titles can be confusing & limiting. 1/2
Cultural sensitivity imp aspect of global educators
A2: Tech breaks down walls, allows Ts to communicate, connect and share ideas not only with Ts but Ss https://t.co/RBoYp30AwF
A1 I think any leadership role needs to have a global focus... invented here no longer is good enough.
absolutely! And outside of our industry too!
A2: Awareness and connection.
we have a team of young teachers building global connections with students
A global ed leader has to know how to build virtual & real learning communities - then blend them. Tech tools? Strategies?
Global leaders are great coaches ... leading the action from field level not from the office
A1 I also think leaders also need to think to the wider (global?) ramifications of their actions.
That's true, Penny. We also learn so much about each other's cultures through global collaboration.
2/2 IMHO Leaders are ppl who push themselves & lift others to do their best for a good purpose. Aware of all
A2 It allows for the opportunity to connect, collaborate & then provide adaptive expertise relevant to their local context
A2: Allows us to connect with innovative educators all over the world which wed never have done when I first started teaching
A2: enables endless connection with other like minded ppl. Tech tears down walls and opens the learning and share space
A@ Digital technology builds the bridge over oceans ... closes the gap and creates opportunities.
Technology is the pencil and paper to get on with the job
I have opened Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM Room.Quality hands on learning. No books.Often pupil led.
we need to be part of a movement for transformation see
A2. Digital technology developments have made collaboration more possible than ever. It's never been easier to network and share.
Great! I would add ..'over time zone and cultural oceans'
A2 Using tech has made it more real n relevant. No longer via page in my Social Studies book, I learn thru real people via tech.
i think important for all educators to have pos approach to solving issues. We model approach for our students
what is global leadership?
The job descriptions sounds complex. What a great challenge!
interesting! Is leadership about perception or self-belief, I wonder.
Totally agree Just a question... how do we engage those who don't connect online?
i wonder...does everyone have the capacity to learn. Can we learn how to lead?
Personally, I'd like another word. Leader & leadership has so many definitions depending on context & participants.
Agree -It's too hard trying to bring about transformation on your own
A2 I think technology enables leaders to be better informed, and more able to face the important aspects of their position.
Interested in your thoughts about how to support 'global' leaders within a learning environment - the teacherpreneurs & outliers
it's about transforming the learning culture in a digital environment transformation
A2 technology is transforming life as we know it, including education. Now more than ever we need leaders who can reshape schools
A3 I truely believe collective teacher efficacy IS the way to go - making decisions stick
A2.As an experienced leader I say Digital technology takes the world into my school. It also takes my school out to the world
The word I keep coming back to. What is the purpose & upon reflection-what was the purpose. Perspective
A3 I ethical leadership a style?
Yes! Leaders who understand global imperatives & support initiatives from within https://t.co/eSQXU4tNMK
A2 technology is transforming life as we know it, including education. Now more than ever we need leaders who can reshape schools
it's a leadership imperative to transform culture through global connections
A2 this chat is perfect example of impact of dig tech...diverse creation of PLN that have global impact on education
Why can't we all be educators and have part of that definition imply leadership.
Always wonderful to have you join Paul.
A3: Those not afraid of tech - we have so many 'rules' about how to use tech. We need to Teach s about tech behaviour.
A3 - Maybe not about style but a commitment to listening, learning, reflecting & then adaptively leading for their ocal context
A2 Hmm, but using tech doesn't guarantee I'm getting it right. Is it my tech or my human connections at centre stage?
I believe everyone can learn what they REALLY want to learn - this may require change
Effort & persistence when obstacles arise, ie time zones.Try to work around it and have tools that help
mindset must be on green - work with the greens first
I see it as a process of transformation we need to be movers as articulates
Same- I wouldn't be in the role I am without my global PLN on Twitter and Facebook
Yes AND we need policitians who get it by trusting those ed leaders who get it, to do it https://t.co/fs4geEUEhK
A2 technology is transforming life as we know it, including education. Now more than ever we need leaders who can reshape schools
A3: not sure about a style but someone open to listening, learning and sharing ideas not afraid of failure, who has Ss in mind
A3: Global leadership means being open to learning from a range of different ideas, systems, contexts and cultures.
Hmm, tech excludes? Now thinking of practical ways to promote learning equity thru non-tech ways.
Good point. Tech is a great partner to global collaboration but it takes us to make the connections!
yes I do agree here Andrea
BTW Greg is our guest on May 28th
Yes, therefore developing PLN is a for of leadership - are you considered leaders in your environment? https://t.co/tsCqZR29B8
Same- I wouldn't be in the role I am without my global PLN on Twitter and Facebook
A3 communicative, collaborative, consultative and importantly evaluative
A3 In the digital world leaders need to create cultures of trust, enabling collaboration & innovation: relationships still matter
Looking forward to this! RT BTW Greg is our guest on May 28th
A3 Powerful when leaders are modelling it. Tech has made it possible for regular teachers to become global leaders in education.
A3: I truly believe leadership in the 21st century is building a culture of learning. And have growth mindset themselves!
Hi all just dropping in for a catch up. Debra from Brisbane
We need to encourage people to choose tech for connection, just like other parts of their life
A3 Education leaders should empower and trust teachers. IMO they shouldn't be directing, they should be removing obstacles.
Hi Debra! Never too late to join in
I would argue culture comes first and refer you to the themes of about leadership as cultural https://t.co/EFHCY2MDgC
it's a leadership imperative to transform culture through global connections
100% agree Paul. Trust is vital in all collaborative relationships. https://t.co/olENJ6MN6j
A3 In the digital world leaders need to create cultures of trust, enabling collaboration & innovation: relationships still matter
culture is the key and the leader is responsible for culture. makes this point in his latest book
We are still considering Q.3. How do we recognise & support the 'outlier' who is globally active? https://t.co/Snconw5ng2
True to both. https://t.co/SCYIJkz1bW
Yes AND we need policitians who get it by trusting those ed leaders who get it, to do it https://t.co/fs4geEUEhK
A2 technology is transforming life as we know it, including education. Now more than ever we need leaders who can reshape schools
Ah,so a good global leader in my schl will do what it takes to help me connect w purpose n tech that works consistently!
good leaders using technology can make things happen
Hi Tina! First time I've made it for a Good fun! Hope you're well.
I like that! https://t.co/hC0ezl0Ks9
Ah,so a good global leader in my schl will do what it takes to help me connect w purpose n tech that works consistently!
this is so important. But how? And when? I think it is all T responsibility, not just some
A3. Distributive ....inviting over people to speak on various topics
A3 person needs to like working remotely & by task rather than by the hour. New ways of global working.
A3 Technology provides a great way to interact across Leafership, school, national cultures. New definition of globalisation?
, I have great teachers developing PLN as we speak. It's about giving the opportunity to create.
A3 techie response: head in the cloud, feet on the ground.
A3: A style that encourages others to share and learn
Thanks for joining us, Deb! Enjoy your training.
Yep & to build their trust through supportive, collaborative, professional relationships
leadership must factor in as part of vision, mission and ultimately strategic plans. Buy in is critical https://t.co/MB5oePhAC3
A3 In the digital world leaders need to create cultures of trust, enabling collaboration & innovation: relationships still matter
agree.hard to suggest particular style. Individuals bring personal qualities to leadership style which makes unique
Yes! 'giving the opportunity to create' ..& also having an agile, flexible learning environment? https://t.co/tGck7InDwr
, I have great teachers developing PLN as we speak. It's about giving the opportunity to create.
A Global Leader needs to feed knowledge back to the classroom to the actual Ts teaching the Ss influencing decisions made
from perspective, teachers network, share, participate etc...we are all leaders & learn from each other
True - any hour, any time- look at us now on a Saturday morning! https://t.co/c3VnYQRWQo
A3 person needs to like working remotely & by task rather than by the hour. New ways of global working.
yes with the undercurrent of trust
absolutely. Tech shouldn't replace connection...should add value/depth to it
Leadership must be flexible in global environments. This means discernment as well as agile willingness to be a learner too!
I am most impressed with this conversation about Leadership for online global collaboration. Q.4 coming....
A3 Global means respecting & valuing cultural differences but realising we need to pull together for all humanity
I agree all Ts should be talking about this! We need to discuss and have units looking at outcomes to their behaviour.
A3.Uplifting L'https://t.co/QNZOnru364 in their ability, provide support when needed. Be clear with vision, purpose, goals
as leaders we must trust our team and appreciate their approaches it makes a difference
Glad to see you! Busy but well :)
yes growth mindset so important in leaders
and giving ppl the opportunity to be creative it's about culture
Question 4. It's a big one....focus on pedagogical change - are you seeing this? How to lead for it? https://t.co/PuqrmWpgib
Ah, now this is good. So we connect globally not to just learn about, but to learn with others?
A3 identify, recognise and showcase those engaging globally- within the confines of department and staff PL- grows confidence
Also, we must remember, leadership for online global collaboration does not require a title
A3: digital is moving readily [globally] - leaders who aren't building a team of flexible global Ts will be leaving Ss behind.
IMO The profession needs courage first-to stand for the global values of good "classroom" 21stC education https://t.co/54qh52kM6p
We are still considering Q.3. How do we recognise & support the 'outlier' who is globally active? https://t.co/Snconw5ng2
Greg, thanks for reminding us about that - yes 'leaders without titles' - I use 'teacherpreneur, outlier https://t.co/hBQ729t4OJ
Also, we must remember, leadership for online global collaboration does not require a title
I think this is very important my school has no titles all teachers are valued and seen as a leader
Good points, Judy.Constantly learning through my global connections and my students see this, through our projects
global leadership should be distributed amongst the members of the team. Built on the strengths of each member.

I'm not afraid of tech, but weary from being told NO by leaders n others.
I think so. A lot of hype about these results eg. Finland, but I think it's important to dig deeper than that.
Perfect Shannon! True connectivism relies on participants being nodes in a network of learners https://t.co/Gp3zL1Oo9n
global leadership should be distributed amongst the members of the team. Built on the strengths of each member.
A4 sometimes the best thing for school leaders to do is take a step back and leave trust where they were.
we are all learners and collaboratively lead the learning. A good point
human connections, tech changes
This is BIG, in fact, HUUGGEE. Hhhmmmm - Maybe start with a "DO, THEN THINK", "READY, FIRE AIM" approaches
Sorry everyone. My time has ended. Off to swimming! I'll have to catch up later. Thanks for sharing your ideas
A4 Hi, all- I think the most sustainable way to lead Ped change is from grass-roots up
I don't think modern ed leaders exist today without growth mindset change management skills essential https://t.co/d8VgSqnRIr
yes growth mindset so important in leaders
A4 of course model. Maybe start own Twitter chats? include students and wider community to begin.
yes! Imagine if dig citizenship was embedded in all unit plans..not just random add on.potential for learning huge
A4 oh my in 140 characters? school MUST believe in collective teacher efficacy to make it stick ... https://t.co/nAae59DLFO
Question 4. It's a big one....focus on pedagogical change - are you seeing this? How to lead for it? https://t.co/PuqrmWpgib
A4: the biggest hurdle is to understand the pedagogy required then design experiences from there on. valuable
Sometimes we forget that a leader is better in the classroom making change through Ss
A3.Leadership is all about people skills and makng fellow workers happy in their work. Its about empathy and understanding
it is it's about a movement from a revolution to transformation great TED by
- yes! allow innovation to happen without unnecessary intervention https://t.co/6lQ5lVEi5r
A4 sometimes the best thing for school leaders to do is take a step back and leave trust where they were.
A4 Trust is major factor.Opps to share within school plus the wider school community. I had parents onboard with global projects
A41 Many educators use the words but do not always practice. If collaboration is a SHARED approach to solving a problem leaders?
A3 Education leaders seek to replace the negative narratives of teaching quality & testing with alternative positive narratives.
Thanks for your insights, Jason.
Yes! thanks Judy - is a whole other topic - vitally related to online global collab. https://t.co/UqGmSEp6pX
A4: the biggest hurdle is to understand the pedagogy required then design experiences from there on. valuable
Reading the Holy Quran is the only solution,
to get rid of your depression
Loved his aim: leaders/systems need to create a climate for innovation & change, not dictate small scale. https://t.co/MGREkcoK5X
it is it's about a movement from a revolution to transformation great TED by
oh so true and must debate what makes impact on learning vs my practice
Leaders are often afraid to do this because their own needs are met by having power and control https://t.co/e3U25TfNNx
A4 sometimes the best thing for school leaders to do is take a step back and leave trust where they were.
have thought about it in terms of concentric circles of influence/support rather than top-down blocks of authority
Have to go now- great hearing from friends online, esp WA connections!
Yes! I think this is where we are heading. Digital awareness and citizenship is not limited to certain subjects!
A4 Leadership should be framed as a continuous learning journey rather than an expert role where "what works" is set in stone.
A3 this is one where I’m tired of ‘leaders’assiming there is a quick fix or magic billet! Live pedagogical change please!!
for sure! do u think then next level up also need to demo trust & real leadershp for school leaders? all the way up.
A4:My school's run a PD program for last 2 years. Ts create and share online. Collaboration across whole school.
Question 5 Can you share examples? Your work? In your digital learning environment? global? https://t.co/lO1DCmjk3K
Thanks for the quick chat here, have to go now. Will follow up.
A4 Schools need to revisit their purpose in light of the changing world, changing student needs, and changing societal needs.
Big question that leads into a very important discussion! 140 characters?
My experience:leaders will encourage global connections because good publicity, not because of good learning value.
A5
A global network of networks, teacher leaders, shifting roles, highly organic.
A5. There was a webinaar hosted by IB Asia Pacific getting teachers online to share their learning and classroom practices
A5: Leaders working & modeling with Ts to support Ss learning.
Julie who is an outlier...think I've missed part of the convo
A5 Presented about my US learning exp. Highlighted those I've connected with that have helped me learn-transfer to sts.
A3 I think this is a good example of supporting teachers to innovate. Develop the right culture! https://t.co/xbAxiaY6xQ
A4 if schools support teacher learning..growth in leadership and pedagogical change can happen..it involves trust & collaboration
blended leadership skills crucial as schools/studs morph into greater need for online learning. F2F exists for tuts/SEL
esp in terms of HA/Lead & how that might pan out. Not abt titles/authority but about influence/support.
I'd like to disagree with you, but unfortunately...
In all seriousness one of the best is CSU Masters of Digital Innovation Another, this &
Last question from just posted. Thanks all for the robust discussion.
A4 McKinsey on good 21stC change-bottom up, owned by teams, messy and product focused. So, I'm not sure.. https://t.co/knFekFHk3c
for sure! do u think then next level up also need to demo trust & real leadershp for school leaders? all the way up.
A5 The best examples are when Ts start and share, then there's 2, then 4, then critical mass
A5: yesterday leaders at conference were 'hacking' an issue in their school and problem solving together.
Thanks Greg - its good to share this https://t.co/02QWqXF8xn
In all seriousness one of the best is CSU Masters of Digital Innovation Another, this &
A5 I also find that the best place to start is Student voice and choice- then they push the change
not all of us. It's about the learning and celebrating the learning. However you are right
Bye Debra - thanks for dropping in!
Yes, but on my own learning as well as on my students' learning?
by real leadership I mean getting out of the way mostly ;) on the ground is where the change happens not in offices
Need to shift Tchr understanding. If kids aren't in your class doesn't mean they aren't learning https://t.co/uMKJvlnf4s
A4 Leadership should be framed as a continuous learning journey rather than an expert role where "what works" is set in stone.
A4 Great ideas are shared by Ken and others...educators have to operationalise in practice. Ken couldn't. https://t.co/XvCCEWSWqj
it is it's about a movement from a revolution to transformation great TED by
Late to join but pls follow our regional TM today Tchr/St
has made a huge difference to the education landscape!
great point. Often we neglect student voice at our peril
yep, as we do through Teachmeets, chatting here
All seems to rely on what measures used for leaders. If it's tick-a-box & individual, leaders will never open up and trust?
Always great to see you, and from WA
Oh come on, that's what you're good at -challenging my thinking!
Thank everyone for participating today. Sharing my new book 'The Global Educator' - section on leadership https://t.co/da8NvyKTdy
A5 I've loved discovering global eduactors-sharing (via books, blogs, online/live talks) adds value to my teaching
Student voice & choice was common theme last night -both fellowship learning. Good start for goal.
I think this Twitter connecting is pretty amazing 2 months ago I had no idea of other side of the world educators or across Aus!!
i think it is important to grow the PLN...twitter has been great for me in doing this
The difference = any T can host/run, any T can present, no cost, owned by network, distributd leadrshp https://t.co/JW4WOANWcm
has made a huge difference to the education landscape!
I think the genuine ones see beyond that. Do it well and then the publicity will come
The hour is slowly coming to a close but this discussion is an ongoing one, especially as we all connect online through
we need to be respectful of cultural differences re what good "classroom" means
It is amazing how quickly you will build a global PLN by being active in chats like this https://t.co/NufDZOiVU4
I think this Twitter connecting is pretty amazing 2 months ago I had no idea of other side of the world educators or across Aus!!
Thanks mate. Back after summer timezone hassles. Is Perth on the poster yet?
agree but also need for alignment not just pockets of great teaching. change PLT
I like to use current global issues iand have students engage with online forums to define truth in the topic
A4 Leaders must engage , embrace ,encourage and initiate change. We must encourage quality teaching from the heart and not th bk
Thank you so much for being our guest moderator on today! Appreciate your generosity
Are you also connecting your students to others to work together? https://t.co/LnOLPJCHUk
I like to use current global issues iand have students engage with online forums to define truth in the topic
thanks for he chat today! Some things we should all start reflecting on and sharing back to our teams!
