Welcome to #PBLchat. I’m Jodi Posadas, School Development Coach for #newtechnetwork Happy to be moderating tonight and chatting about proactively supporting social emotional learning in elementary culture! Jump in and introduce yourself!
Excited to join in a #pblchat again finally (as long as my 3 month little one stays asleep)! I'm Brooke Von Stein, third grade facilitator from @CVschoolofInq (also known as teammate to @mrslewis3c )
A1: I define social emotional learning as learning to be a good citizen. This applies inside and outside the classroom. It's learning to get along with others, to lead and follow and to empathize with others. #PBLchat
A1: Social emotional learning happens when teachers realize that emotion drives learning. When we can tap into a student's authentic interests and build relationship with them--amazing things happen. #PBLchat
A1: I think social emotional learning includes Ss who are able to build positive relationships w/ both adults and peers & through that process develop empathy #PBLchat
SEL is using knowledge and skills to assist in emotions while working towards a positive attitude and building relationships with peers and adults. #pblchat
A1: I think that in social emotional learning, we are teaching the whole child. I think it goes beyond the textbook and targets what each student needs to learn and grow effectively and successfully educationally and emotionally. #pblchat
Love this explanation Amy. You are so right, and I think that starts within developing a positive relationship with our students so we can better understand their emotions. #PBLchat
Q1: We're gonna say: how students (and adults!) go about acquiring skills to manage emotions, make decisions, empathize with others, and form meaningful relationships, as well as how all of those skills intersect and affect one another! #pblchat
A1: The abilities students need to thrive as individuals, to understand and care about themselves and others, and to find and achieve their purposes in the world.#PBLchat
A1- Teaching the child, not the subject!
Showing empathy and love towards my students, every day,
And my favourite... using stories and books to help my students navigate their emotions #PBLChat
A1 For soc/emo learning to happen, educators need to practice empathy-especially in the age of social media. Building relationships with our students is so important. #PBLchat
A1: Social emotional learning is educating Ss in areas where subject area content alone leaves gaps. i.e.: interacting with others, handling stress, expressing emotions appropriately #pblchat
A1: I define social emotional learning as interacting and learning from others, watching other reactions, and recovering feedback from people. #pblchat
A2: By modeling empathy- always. It shows students that you can be in a position of authority and empathetic at the same time, an interesting dynamic. #PBLchat
A2: Currents supports include morning meeting, PBIS implementation, weekly guidance lessons from our counselor, embedding NTLOs in social stories. #PBLChat
Q2: I teach at a all girls catholic high school. We work closely with our guidance counselors and administrators to help students deal with stress, anxiety, disappointment and healthy relationships #PBLchat
A Growth Mindset. I emphasize the importance and power of "yet" and supporting each other through our struggles and learning from our personal mistakes and each other's mistakes. #pblchat
I always start the day with a check-in and a greeting, using teachable moments, and make sure that my classroom shows kindness and generosity. I also use cooperative learning strategies to help my kids learn how to work with others even if they don't get along with them! #PBLchat
A2: I support SEL by allowing my Ss to have discussion, work through things together, and deal with things within our classroom. They’re kids, they learn more than curriculum from us. We have to walk them through it and help them out. ❤️ #teachkids#pblchat
A2: We have classroom discussions and I observe a lot and let the Ss try to solve their problems on their own. I kind of stay in the background when I can.. #PBLchat
A2: Using responsive classroom, establishing a sense of community in the classroom, meeting the individual needs of the student through hands-on learning, close interactions with the school counselor, environmental-based learning #pblchat
A2: In the music education classroom, this SEL learning occurs regularly. For example: Teaching our students ways to cope with feelings of disappointment when a performance doesn’t live up to expectations. #pblchat
A2: While not currently teaching, I believe that talking to students/others in a way that they can understand and relate to while having patience and showing respect. #pblchat
A2: Another music education classroom example: Guiding students toward behavior that is gracious and humble after a successful audition, especially when peers may be feeling disappointed about their own results. #pblchat
A2: Each month, our school has a different attribute/behavior that we educate students on. We have a school wide assembly 2 introduce it & what it means, then teachers continue with a lesson on the attribute in the classroom. Examples include mindfulness & empathy #PBLchat
A2: came across this @edutopia article about a school staff in Nevada that uses a great strategy in staff meetings to make sure the school culture is supporting all students. https://t.co/92U4KILuqQ#pblchat
A2: Model behaviors, establish class norms and team contracts, individual and group conversations when things are not going well, give kudos when they are. #PBLchat
A2: The music education classroom is ripe with examples: Using the music that we perform as a vehicle to celebrate diversity, learn about other cultures and be accepting of those who may be different from us. #pblchat
A2 A big part of soc/emo learning, is that our teachers model it themselves. Showing how being vulnerable and taking risks is part of the growth mindset. Our teachers modeling this through their tech use is also so important! #PBLchat
Wow! So many great ways you are all thinking about this work already. Teachers are powerful and I’m glad that you are creating ways for students to be supported in this way. #pblchat
A2: Our program is continuously improving, and we enlist the help of our youth partners to do that. By listening to their input and making concrete changes, we try to model our own vulnerability and show students that their voices are important and heard. #pblchat
A2: We also are a recognized @HabitsOfMindInt school, and we recognize these behaviors in class to help students develop those self-awareness skills & how to utilize a growth mindset in day-to-day tasks! #pblchat
A2: My mentor teacher leads a class meeting every morning where students talk about how they're feeling and try to understand each other's points of view. #pblchat
@RototunaSHS BeeCool project extracting their seasons honey...now to develop, market and sell official RSHS bee products to the community. #PBL#pblchat#PCTI
A2 - I teach at an IB school, and the program has set attitudes and attributes- I LOVE that our Ss have the same language for these pillars of character. We also teach with the Zones of Regulations program, which helps all Ss self-regulate #pblchat
A2: This year our district has adopted weekly direct instruction of an SEL lesson as a regular part of our MTSS time. That skill is then referenced throughout the week. #pblchat
A2: We talked about the rush of adrenaline before a performance, and, we discuss and learn ways to calm ourselves down such as taking a deep breath, closing our eyes. Helping students to understand and manage those feelings - leading them to have a better performance. #pblchat
A2- having a common language for our SEL objectives shows our students that SEL is the foundation of education, and that their Ts value their moral character. #essential#pblchat
A3 When we pay close attention to what kids take an authentic interest in, the learning is so much more intuitive/natural. When we put THEIR interests in the center of all things we teach-BINGO! #PBLchat
A3: If you are focused on the Ss, then you have have to look at the whole student, not just the academics/content. It builds a sense of community where Ss take risks & achieve greatness! #pblchat#bestpractices#knowyourtribe#loveyourtribe
A3: I think it opens up a new means for constructive criticism. When taught proper SE skills kiddos are more willing to positively critique each other, openly ask questions, share what mistakes they may have made, and teach others how to fix their mistakes. #PBLchat
A3: From a very simple perspective, letting my students do more talking than I do! This allows me 2 learn more about them on a personal level, which better drives instruction to be more student-centered! #PBLchat
A3: As a special education teacher, paying attention to SEL has allowed me to better differentiate my instruction. I can better meet the needs of my students and find their motivators. #PBLchat
It gives our kids the chance to practice what we teach and preach in both core content areas and social skills - it improves and increases their ability to make and maintain relationships. #PBLchat
Q3: My students celebrate each other successes and each other's mistakes. They view mistakes as an opportunity to grow and acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes. #pblchat
A3: Our youth council has presented program improvements at our EXPO every year. This year, we're also supporting them in bringing changes back to their own organizations! #pblchat
A3: Ss are more conscious of the need to actively listen to others' ideas. Also to recognize other Ss have different skills/capabilities, and that is a good thing. #PBLchat
A3 I think modeling/allowing students to utilize tech/social media is just one way that we can allow them to be invested in what they do. We need to show them then nuances of how to utilize it, but when they can learn to do this--it can help drive their learning. #PBLchat
Yes! My Ss will OPENLY tell guests in our classroom, “Mrs. Geis makes a lot of mistakes, she doesn’t always have the answer!” And while sometimes it’s super embarrassing, I know I’m being a quality example of a growth mindset & the role of a facilitator! #PBLchat
A3: #SEL is a great way to meet each student where they are instead of going about a 1 size fits all response to any behaviors that occur. Having student-created norms, expectations and possible consequences meant more buy-in to our shared learning environment. #pblchat
A3. Paying attention to social emotial learning can help educators recognize the students' needs in order to design relevant and meaninful activities that are tailored on the learning preferences of each one of the students. #PBLchat
A3- less fights during teamwork, better problem-solving skills, clear(er) communication, random acts of kindness... focusing on SEL opens the doors to everything else. #PBLchat
A3: Within reason, I am flexible on test dates. It reduces student stress levels to not have too many tests on one day. It makes the students feel supported and valued. #PBLchat
A3: Helping students to understand their emotions led to easier conflict management, better use of time based on how they were experiencing tasks and definitely a lot less stress! #pblchat
Make sure there's shared language around it. Not just "did what teacher said to do." Luckily, @newtechnetwork has some saucy rubrics w/specific indicators. #PBLchat
In reply to
@AmySayers65, @jodihawk, @Hauck2ndgrade, @newtechnetwork
A3: When a student is unable to understand or manage their emotions, it's hard for them to learn anything else. Frustration, confusion, and anxiety seriously affects a student's ability to learn. #pblchat
Q4: How does SEL become a fluid practice in the classroom rather than a stand alone initiative? Are there ways you have been able to connect SEL to PBL? #pblchat
A4: Honestly incorporating the NTLOs into our PBL has been helpful and lends itself to SEL. With the changes in school structure, setup, content delivery mehod, and teacher role PBL and SEL have blended into things that cannot always be seperated. #PBLchat
as everyone gets to know each other and our personalites are able to come out, SEL becomes part of our vocabulary- since they feel supported, students are more likely to be creative with PBL #PBLchat
A4: Focusing on 1 of the 11 indicators on the @newtechnetwork agency rubric is a solid start. Allow Ss practice, reflection, practice, feedback, reflection, practice, reflection, practice...before dolling our grades. #pblchat
A4: Maybe I’m wrong, but I find utilizing @RonRitchhart Thinking Routines as a great way to connect thinking, SEL & the curriculum! Using regularly, discussions on what we think, how we feel & why become the norm in our classroom! #PBLchat
A4: My school is based around project-based, hands-on approach learning. Using responsive classroom and SEL, there is a fluid connection between how the students are learning and how they are being taught #pblchat
A4 SEL and PBL are easily married through the language we use in our classrooms. When we choose words that make Ss feel like they can take risks-problems get solved. #PBLchat
A4 SEL needs to be consistently named, shouted out, and highlighted in the classroom. During team PBL activities call to attention when students demonstrate relationship skills and self-awareness. It becomes part of the class culture. #pblchat
SEL needs to be practiced regularly in order for the taught skills/concepts to become habitual. Student language becomes kinder. They then are more willing to amongst each other and use their creativity for PBL
#PBLchat
A4: In my classroom I try to model and lead by example to demonstrate to Ss. I am always being attentive and take advantage of a teachable moment too. #PBLchat
A4: To me, "stand-alone SEL" is like someone "acting human" for a 30 minute period. integrating SEL is just ...being human. having empathy. communicating thoughts and feelings. sharing and connecting. We're teachers, yes, but people first! #PBLchat
A4: I think facilitating SEL automatically makes it a part of whatever lesson you may be doing that day. The more they see it, the more they’ll do it. #pblchat
A4: As a safe and inquisitive culture is established, students are free to pursue questions without fear. This can lead to engaging conversations and discussions! Researching answers is not work, its fun! #PBLchat
A4. PBL is a great way to incorporate SEL. Most PBL are designed to be group projects. Students have the apportunity to learn how to work with others and to express their ideas the best way possible for the project to be successful. #PBLchat
A4: 3rd gd learned about local and federal environmental agencies. They hiked through town and found issues/areas of improvement. They contacted the agency that they felt fit their problem. Targeted their interests, and they chose how to complete the project #edchat#PBLchat
A4: Incorporating #newtechnetwork outcomes- specifically agency- helps. Also, thinking strategically about how to help sts work through problems in project groups (instead of firing sts from the group) helps to improve #SEL skills #pblchathttps://t.co/Q2f3XLVHna
A5: Responsive classroom, EIC (using the Environment as an Integrating Context for improving student learning), service learning projects, differentiated instruction #pblchat
A5: The use of morning meetings, PBIS school-wide, Tiger Time, social stories, reflection, teachable moments, PBL, collaborative groupwork, etc. #pblchat
Our guidance department has been invaluable. They are constantly looking for better ways to guide our girls. Differentiating instruction helps too! #PBLchat
#PBLchat A3- I have used Design Thinking to challenge my students to tie decision making and critical thinking skills to the impact they can have on others . I have tied many projects like an anti bullying movie making project to address these needs
A5: @ClassDojo is a great starting point for introducing SEL 2 young Ss! I also think using PBL in general lends 2 natural utilization of SEL. I’ve used the 5E integrated model 4 PBL in my classroom, that seems to drive instruction as student-centered! #PBLchat
A5: Responsive classroom, EIC (using the Environment as an Integrating Context for improving student learning), service learning projects, differentiated instruction #pblchat
We use @Posproject each morning. I have also used @classdojo videos to teach growth mindsets, and we also use Second Step lessons to practice SEL. #pblchat
A5: We're currently tackling data-informed program improvements. Measuring SEL is tough, but the data gives us great insights into what approaches we can scale across different member organizations. #pblchat
A5 For our K-5 classrooms, we use the C.L.A.S.S. model--it brings together brain-based learning with best practices. We've used this model for 17 years (and it has grown and developed over those years,) and LOVE IT! https://t.co/JAEmd1azJl#PBLchat
A5: Connecting to real world. Yesterday, asked (high school) Ss to read https://t.co/NNPz95liCc and identify one factor they want to focus on improving. #PBLchat
A5- of course I have my favourite programs...morning meetings, classroom meetings (certain years), Zones of Regulation, integrating #IBPYP attitudes and attributes...but really, you can also save your money and just be empathetic 😇 good pedagogy is priceless! #pblchat
A5: utilizing what we call “dragon connections” - no curriculum allowed meetings and also being real with the kids, show them you’re human just like them. #pblchat
I teach high school and the best way to practice SEL is by modeling. It is important for the students to know that they are in a safe environment where diversity is valued. #PBLchat
This is a great idea- students love applied learning, and thinking of ways to connect SEL to situations outside of school shouldn't be difficult! #pblchat
A5: Morning meetings that I have seen in my classrooms I did practicum in were almost always very valuable for classroom management and student empathy! Having students discuss how they feel really helps heighten emotional understanding #pblchat
In my school, the guidance counselors are the best resource we have to know what the students need and what is the best way to help them succeed. #PBLchat
A6: As with all Twitter chats, I’m leaving feeling very reflective on my practice and how a I can better improve on incorporating SEL into my classroom! Thanks everyone for the stories, resources, and inspiration! #PBLchat
Feeling this quote after tonight’s #pblchat
Being an educator is hard and we all have the power to change how students experience school, life and relationships. Let’s use that power for good!
I'll definitely make sure that PBL and SEL are being used simultaneously in my classroom from here on out. So many great ideas and resources to incorporate in my room too! #PBLchat
A6: Seeing that I couldn't think of very many SEL resources besides morning meetings, we definitely need to integrate more programs into our schools! #pblchat
