Hi Everyone! My name is Sylwia and I am a third grade teacher in NJ! One of my biggest passions is kindness and I am so glad that Denis has invited me to moderate a #MakeItReal Chat. Let’s spend the evening discussing how we can #MakeItKind - and by it, I mean our classrooms!
Hi everyone! Stephanie, 5th grade teacher in Edison, NJ! One of the kindest things someone has done for me this summer is friends and family donating to my Donors Choose project bc they know how much it means to me! #MakeItReal
Rachel & Steven : fifth grade teacher and technology teacher in Colorado. Recently left NM To teach here and our students were very kind to reach out to us all summer making us feel amazing #MakeItReal.
A1 For my Littles kindness is a constant conversation + expectation. When we need to focus on it, I use my “How are you going to show....”chart. They write on stickies how they are going to show kindness (or whatever!) for the week. #makeitreal
A1: Years ago two S were being excluded by most kids. Many felt bc they weren't the "bullies" it was ok to be the bystanders. Read "Terrible Things" (was related to our Holocaust unit) and discussed how "standing by" can be it's own problem- stand up for kindness. #MakeItReal
A1: In the beginning of the year, we work on cooperative group activities. Ss have an end goal that they work towards but I tell them that to me, it does not matter whether or not you reach the goal. What matters most is how you work in a group and how kind you are! #makeitreal
A1: we noticed our 4th graders struggled with communicating with each other clearly. We combined “ how to communicate like a professional” with empathy ,they began to understand it boils down to kindness. We did this through technology and face-to-face interactions. #makeitreal
So true! My freshmen are at that weird stage where some of them are having to try for the first time so I always try to catch their frustration and channel it before it becomes angry or mean words #MakeitReal
A1: The school where I teach @HortonsCreekES we use @PosProject to explicitly teach students character strengths such as #kindness and why it matters. Its all about getting better at being human! #MakeItReal

A1 With a challenging class, I read a kindness quote/deed each day from a “Everyday Kindness” book. My students grumbled when I’d pull it out each morning, but were quick to call me out one day when I forgot 😊 even at the high school level this was so effective! #makeitreal
Reminds me of a favorite quote by Maya Angelou: People may not remember what you said but they will remember how you made them feel. #MakeItReal#KindnessMatters
A2: If kids don't feel safe, kids can't learn. Kids crave acceptance and support from peers and teachers... all it takes is one comment to change a child's confidence. The key to academic success is a sense of community- and for that, we need kindness. #MakeItReal
A1- Every year on the first day of school, I ask my Ss what they think I think is the most important part of school. After many guesses, I reveal that it is kindness!! I tell them if everyone was kind all the time, what a beautiful world we would live in! #makeitreal
#makeitreal A2 Jerry Toups HS Math Tr from Houston TX. My major goal each year is for my Ss to describe who I am with the Fruits of the Spirit. Trs need to WALK THE TALK and role model these attributes for Ss to learn them. They aren't getting them from our world!!!

A2 Well. You can look at the world today and know it needs to be modeled + taught. It’s free. Being kind costs nothing. Kindness creates more kindness. #makeitreal
A2 it’s important to show students the importance of kindness and the ripple effect it can have. “choose being kind over being right, and you will be right every time” teach students to be the bigger person and solve problems in a more peaceful manner! #makeitreal
#MakeitReal Our world is starving for more of it. We need to instill it in this generation. No one knows how much math you know but they can always see your kindness.
I wanted to share a link to a professional development session that I did about kindness in the classroom. Here I share many ideas for incorporating and teaching kindness as well as book titles to support teaching kindness! https://t.co/OlVDF99c4L#makeitreal
A2: We make sure to tell our students that kindness is contagious. That even if they feel that they’re the only ones being kind that it will spread .Since both of us have such a strong technology presence they understand that their reach is even longer now. #makeitreal
A3 I didn’t Google it but I love reading Leonardo the Terrible Monster by @mowilliams to illustrate empathy. That’s a powerful emotion to lead to kindness! #makeitreal
Thank you all for a fantastic and insightful chat! I am proud to have connected with all of you kindness advocates & I look forward to hearing about all the awesomely kind things you & your Ss do this year! #MakeItReal Big thank you to @MathDenisNJ for having me moderate tonight!
