#musedchat Archive

Each Monday evening at 8PM EST, music teachers get together and share ideas about important topics within music education. It’s a great chance to interact directly with educators from all over the world and to get new tips and tricks to help you succeed in the classroom. The entire #musedchat discussion is organized and moderated by Joe Guarr.

A1: As rarely as I can. Sub plans for non-band subs w/ groups of 45ish are not my favorite. Easier to go to work if I can. #musedchat
  • SarahMJoncas Jun 5 @ 8:08 PM EDT
A2: I use days very sparingly even while feeling lousy. With no music subs my Ss miss out if I'm not there. #musedchat
  • phyllissings Jun 5 @ 8:08 PM EDT

10 sick/4 personal that roll over. I don't use many because I also hate writing sub plans. #musedchat

A1: now I never take sick days for me only sick kids #musedchat
  • dan_austin76 Jun 5 @ 8:12 PM EDT

  • jguarr - Moderator Jun 5 @ 8:13 PM EDT
There are days in the spring where my allergies make me essentially useless as a teacher. Usually use 1/2 sick days for that. #musedchat
  • mrallentweets Jun 5 @ 8:13 PM EDT
#musedchat I maybe take one sick day a year, personal days usually are for family stuff. We have a shortage subs, but people use them.

A1: 0 sick days for me, 2 personal days to attend conferences. #musedchat
  • AmyLynnRever Jun 5 @ 8:14 PM EDT

A1.2: it depends on time of year. Pre-concerts? Never. This past May? I went recruiting off-campus & took 3 personal days. #musedchat
  • TriToneJones Jun 5 @ 8:15 PM EDT
A1: I use sick days when I’m sick, personal days only if necessary. Had to move my mom this Winter so used one. #musedchat

  • SamuelFritz Jun 5 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A1.1: we get an undetermined number of prof days for conf, workshops and even fittings - I used -8 #musedchat

    In reply to @SarahMJoncas
  • AmyLynnRever Jun 5 @ 8:18 PM EDT
A2.1: Not all subs are comfortable with the size of group and noise level though, so sometimes movie days happen. #musedchat
  • bassoonlady1 Jun 5 @ 8:18 PM EDT
#musedchat It is sad when specialists get pulled to sub for other teachers. I think both suffer. No music classes & not normally made up.

Q3: Do you ever feel like music teachers approach taking a day off differently than everybody else? Why do you think that is? #musedchat
  • SarahMJoncas Jun 5 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: yes! Try to find days that don't affect concert prep. I see kids 36 times or less per year so every class counts #musedchat
  • JarvelaMused Jun 5 @ 8:27 PM EDT
A3: Of course, because THE SHOW MUST GO ON. #musedchat
  • ImTheRealReRe Jun 5 @ 8:27 PM EDT
It depends on if they give us work or not. What I meant by study Hall is there's a sub we can work on work from other classes #musedchat
    In reply to @SarahMJoncas
  • TriToneJones Jun 5 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3: It’s a little scary just because it seems there are less subs trained to teach arts classes. Maybe perception not reality… #musedchat
    In reply to @jguarr
  • jhallma_mused Jun 5 @ 8:28 PM EDT
A3: Yes because growth in a music class depends so much on daily rehearsal, and there aren't many subs that know rehearsal ped #musedchat
