Full moon and two rockstars this evening. Woot!!!
Hi, #ohedchat! My name's Beth, and I'm currently inspiring juniors to sneak poetry books out of my room because they just need them right now. Oh, and sophomores to research and create service projects for Springfield, OH!
Adam, 5/6 social studies, Brooklyn, Ohio! Haven't felt 100% the past couple days, so I'll be around for a bit since it'll be an early night for me! #ohedchat

Right now, thanks to some #ncte magic and #gkp18, we are rocking it in room 230. And sometimes sappy love poems or Hopkin's Crank just get you hooked. #ohedchat
A1 Ts can participate in celebrating the good things other Ts and Ss are doing, collaborating w/Ts on new ideas, involving Ps in classrm, reaching out to new Ts #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: The old ways of doing things are archaic. We need to focus on finding our Ss passions & preparing them to live out their passions. We need to offer more opportunities in schools for Ss to live this out. I'm not sure taking notes & tests is anyone's inner passion.
#ohedchat
Hello! My name is Brianna Garber and I am a student teacher for 3rd grade at Graham Elementary and will graduate from Urbana University in May! #ohedchat
A1. Places an emphasis on shaping the whole student. Preparing them with life skills and character as well as academically in order to apply to any and all situations #ohedchat

#ohedchat A1: Content is important. It always will be. But also important, and growing in importance is metacognitive development. Ss need to learn HOW to learn and own their growth. They need the skill of reflection. If this isn't part of what we do, we are failing them!

A1) We need to have our students ready for ANYTHING! I think that’s why collaboration, perseverance and an optimistic attitude are so big for our students! #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: we as Ts need to provide Ss with skills that allow them to create, discover, problem solve, and take risks. Ss need more than memorization. #ohedchat
A1: are we really preparing students to be those outside the box thinkers that are creating solutions to problems not yet thought of? I see lots of good teacher trying to do it but a system that is worried what can be regurgitated. The system doesnt mirror the ideology.
#ohedchat
A1) Critical thinking skills, accessing info, collaboration, curiosity/imagination, entrepreneurship are all skills that prepare you for ANYTHING #ohedchat

How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: Reality: Our Ss are going to have to take what they learn and apply it in all kinds of ways and situations--and they're going to have learn new skills and concepts quickly. It's a changing world! #ohedchat
A1: tapping into student interests is key! Flip the rigor, relevance and relationship and start forstbwoth relationship. The. Relevance and rigor will follow. Build on the passion and Ss interest will follow. Must focus on collaboration, communication and passion of Ss #ohedchat
A1: We need to change our practice. If we don't model change & allow our Ss voice and choice, we are not doing our field justice. We must continue to get better & use our resources available to do it. Patience is not an excuse anymore #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: Not knowing what future careers will be gives us an amazing opportunity to prepare kids for that uncertainty! Let kids fail forward, let kids solve their problems, let kids work though difficult concepts... #ohedchat
A1 This quote sounds the death knell for the worksheet-minded.
Innovation is about iteration and adaptability. You can't get there via Scantron.
#ohedchat
A1: As educators, we must work to lead learners toward a confident independence...there is so much to know, and students must learn to sort through it all to find what they need. #ohedchat
A1: Education has no limit, things are changing each day and students need to be ready for that. Using different skills and incorporating Ss thought is a must. Ss can learn how to use and exercise their mind in this age. #ohedchat
A1: are we really preparing students to be those outside the box thinkers that are creating solutions to problems not yet thought of? I see lots of good teacher trying to do it but a system that is worried what can be regurgitated. The system doesnt mirror the ideology.
#ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Not about test taking skills unless we change the assessments...our kids need to be able to be thinkers, resilient, and adaptable for an unknown future.
A1: As #sel and "soft" skills become more valuable to companies, the ability to be an adaptable problem solver is becoming more of a direct skill that innovative companies are looking for. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Follow up. Yes, passion and deep thinking is important. But one must think deeply about SOMEthing. One must know something to be passionate about. Let's not get too carried away. Basic facts and skills are important. But education can't end there.
A1: Challenge of educating Ss for an employment landscape that may be radically different by the time they graduate & continues to evolve throughout their careers. #ohedchat
A1) Critical thinking skills, accessing info, collaboration, curiosity/imagination, entrepreneurship are all skills that prepare you for ANYTHING #ohedchat
A1. We have to prepare our Ss for any type of job or situaion where they can recreate themselves constantly for the unknown future! Teaching our Ss to think creativity and utilize their knowledge and skills. #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: We need to build communication skills and metacognitive skills that allow students to understand what drives them and set them up for the future. #ohedchat
A1: Challenge of educating Ss for an employment landscape that may be radically different by the time they graduate & continues to evolve throughout their careers. #ohedchat
It’s a true challenge that they will have to learn new skills quickly, but still need the patience to see the task through to the end. Seeing that failure is okay and important to growth #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Content is important. It always will be. But also important, and growing in importance is metacognitive development. Ss need to learn HOW to learn and own their growth. They need the skill of reflection. If this isn't part of what we do, we are failing them!

How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A1: I like to think that we need to prepare them for the "forever". Teach them how to learn, how to be critical thinkers, how to communicate, and they will be able to face pretty much anything that comes their way. #OhEdChat
Future driven is key! I think that too often in the education world blue collar jobs are undervalued and not promoted with equal outlook to students! These jobs are just as valuable and are just as satisfying! #ohedchat
A1) students need to be adaptable but PATIENT as well. It’s our job to show them failure is okay, and it only leads to more growth in the Long Run #ohedchat
A1 Ss must be able to think, create, collaborate, debate, redefine, revise & publish a final product using remote communication, plus verbal & written literacy skills. Job duties will be defined as time goes on, but the skills for success have already been defined! #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
We must prepare students to have the ability to forward think and adjust in a changing world of work. They must accept change as a Norm and be ready to move forward when directions shift. #ohedchat

#OHedChat but when we still say content is impt, how impt?? (i say <25%) if you ask a kid about their passion, how many will define it in terms of a piece of content or 1 content area? i would say none.
A1: We need to provide Ss with opportunities to problem solve real world problems and to take risks. To persevere and reflect. To ask questions. When we don’t give Ss opportunities to truly engage in conversation, these things can’t happen. #ohedchat
I agree. I love seeing Ts learning from Ss when I go in classrooms. The archaic control factor of Ts being the Boss in classroom fades away as Ss hold the information & ability to share it #OHedchat
Due to the fact that we are always working to be better, that is how we have to teach our students - by accepting each way of learning. Collaboration is always going to be something that will be used, so let them fail together and then learn from that! #ohedchat
A2 Modeling.
Our FedEx Days for Ts, Passion Days in stead of finals, and collaborative spirit in innovation thru video are just a few examples of adaptability in action.
#ohedchat
A1: Today's education must teach student to learn. The skills v. content debate is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Now it is about the ability to identify needs, adapt to changing environments by applying skills, and define new methods of action. #ohedchat

How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A2: I try to do this simply, allow my classroom to be free flowing and not be strapped down by trying to simply get through content. Talk discuss and reflect with students. #ohedchat
A2: I try to change and provide different opportunities for Ss & staff. Recently we had our Ss compete in a state BPA competition that many traditional HS do not compete in. It helps to provide staff & Ss w/ challenges & the confidence to make change #ohedchat
Q2: I put my students in situations where they have "think outside of the box." Tray have to move past just knowledge and comprehension. They must apply what is learned. #ohedchat
A2: I always give a question/survey to students half way through the war and at the end of the year asking for specific feedback about what they liked and what they would like to add or change in my class and try to adapt based on responses. It’s so important to be open #ohedchat
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A2: project based learning, mastery based learning, and DOK level 3 and 4. Your test is not to have me give you a test but use what you have learned & apply in a real world way.
#ohedchat
A2) empowering students to collaborate more. I use to think a quiet classroom meant real learning was happening, but that’s not always true. Teaching students to truly collaborate and work together gets them ready to work in any field I believe #ohedchat
A2: letting Ss have a greater say in their learning. Provide Ss with opportunities to lead where they want learning to go. Plus, technology always doesn't work right, so I model adaptability there! #ohedchat
A2 This summer, I attended a PD day at the Dome in Springfield. Learned about digital badging with @WeAreLRNG. Joined their #PLC. Created badges/playlists for my Ss. Rinse and repeat. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A1: Content is important. It always will be. But also important, and growing in importance is metacognitive development. Ss need to learn HOW to learn and own their growth. They need the skill of reflection. If this isn't part of what we do, we are failing them!
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A2: I’m Lauren Clock, 4th grade teacher. I have embraced some new technology platforms for learning and have been excited to see how they motivate students and allow multiple ways to demonstrate learning. #ohedchat
Then they are in classes where Ts are not making the content come to life and not relating content to individual learner needs. And that’s a shame... #ohedchat
A2: I try to do this simply, allow my classroom to be free flowing and not be strapped down by trying to simply get through content. Talk discuss and reflect with students. #ohedchat
A1 - Be a teacher that makes learning fun and be creative with it! Work hard to engage each student with skills that they enjoy and find interesting. #ohedchat
A2: I love when I see teachers explain their instructional decisions in real time to their class. I think that’s a perfect way to model adaptability. #ohedchat
A2: I always give a question/survey to students half way through the war and at the end of the year asking for specific feedback about what they liked and what they would like to add or change in my class and try to adapt based on responses. It’s so important to be open #ohedchat
A2. Recently began a self-paced classroom model. After implementing it for a lesson, gathering S feedback, and seeing much less engagement during a more traditional lesson, I decided to essentially go all in. I explained to Ss the why & they appreciated. #ohedchat
#ohedchat A2: 1st time ever, gave AP Stats Ss option to do project instead of prep for AP exam. We are learning together how to do this well. Great mix of what I need from them+what they need from me. I'm letting Ss lead me. They WANT to do well! My job: help/get out of the way!
A2: I've held class meetings when we need to adjust. Snow days? Something more challenging than I anticipated? Let's figure out how best to set ourselves for learning & success, together. #ohedchat
Lots of different places, mostly somehow we talk about life and the importance of how we handle ourselves. Sometimes about where content can be used. #ohedchat
I have assumed best intentions when faced with ideas or changes to how we do what we do. The “right fit” is different for each of us, and I have tried to watch and listen before I decide on changes. #ohedchat
A2 We have spent much more time on the process rather than the product. When I was a Ss, it was all about the end result. I want Ss to see the journey to that end as the takeaway! #ohedchat
A2: Say yes as often as possible. Student ideas, staff ideas, secretary ideas. I conscientiously work at not assuming I'm the smartest person in the room just because I have the final say. #ohedchat
A2: ‘This is new for me, too’ has become my mantra this year!!! I love for kids and staff to see that I’m willing to try new things and work through the unknown with them! #ohedchat
Q2: I put my students in situations where they have "think outside of the box." Tray have to move past just knowledge and comprehension. They must apply what is learned. #ohedchat
I love seeing when Ss do this and they almost look at you amazed at the fact that they have communicated so well with others and come up with a great solution or idea. #ohedchat
A2: As a principal...working on a pilot proposal where students will spend less time in core academics and more time collaborating around authentic problem solving and balancing multiple long and short term projects....#ohedchat
A2. Ss voice and choice in the classroom. We have to allow our Ss to lead and make decisions for themselves. As we model the skills of empathy , kindness, and caring so they can learn these skills as well. #ohedchat
A1: I explain and admit when I’ve done something wrong, I may switch things up based on feedback from my Ss. I always give explanations as a model. Class is a free flow with structure that can adapt if needed. #ohedchat
Yes! So true! With key soft skills, you can be successful wherever you go. While collar, blue collar, or whatever else Ss find still needs them to communicate, think, work with others, and keep with it #ohedchat
A2 modeling adaptability is inherent in technology coaching. I'm always trying something out new, supporting teachers trying out something new or supporting students trying out something new. And it doesn't always go as planned!
#ohedchat
A2: As a principal...working on a pilot proposal where students will spend less time in core academics and more time collaborating around authentic problem solving and balancing multiple long and short term projects....#ohedchat
A2: I left them teach the government unit. Since their #4th grade, we used backwards design process through a Hyperdoc, but they owned the lesson from start to finish. #ohedchat
Our entrepreneurship class is really catching steam this year. Find a problem, figure out how to communicate to the stakeholders, solve it using our resources. All student driven. It's beautiful. #ohedchat
A1: We need to provide Ss with opportunities to problem solve real world problems and to take risks. To persevere and reflect. To ask questions. When we don’t give Ss opportunities to truly engage in conversation, these things can’t happen. #ohedchat
Yes! So important to be honest with them when you're wrong and to truly listen to their feedback! Those are not signs of weakness, they're signs of dedication to doing your best! #ohedchat
A2: As @simonsinek says: be the last to speak. Listen to what everyone has to say before weighing in, before giving your opinion. The results can be just as beneficial for us as they can be for others. #OhEdChat
I agree. I love seeing Ts learning from Ss when I go in classrooms. The archaic control factor of Ts being the Boss in classroom fades away as Ss hold the information & ability to share it #OHedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
A3: if we adapt as educators & make learning "personal" as @willrich45 said in a recent post, we can instruct to Ss individually and focus on their passions. Ss then can reach for personal mastery because its something they care about #ohedchat
Yes! Gerard Adams and Soledad OBrien are my favorite episodes so far!! I laugh, I cry, it's great entertainment if you're riding next me me on my commute. #ohedchat
In reply to
@JakeMillerTech, @PrincipalCMill, @letsstartedup
A3: Adaptable learning = life skill. Life is full of twists, turns, adjustments. Being adaptable will help us in our avocations, our relationships with others, daily chores . . . #ohedchat
A3) Adaptable learning shows students there isn’t just one way to learn or do something. Sometimes you need to get off the beaten path to experience/learn something to help us grow! #ohedchat
A2: Showing Ss that you are flexible also shows that you are adaptable. When you allow students to lead the way, that is when, as Ts, we make sure they know that their learning is based on their understanding. Its "how do we make it better" vs. "okay that's good" #ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
Q1 - #ohedchat
How does this quote relate to the need for us to help our students be adaptable learners?
“Since we live in an age of innovation, a practical education must prepare a person for work that does not yet exist and cannot yet be clearly defined.” --Peter Drucker
A2: This entire year has been built on change. We are asking staff and students to adjust to new expectations, goals, instructional delivery and norms. Staff is modeling by using followthrough and being united. Students are adapting, succeeding, and thriving! #ohedchat
A2: Foster an environment where both students and teachers aren’t afraid to fail. We encourage our students to have a growth mindset. Teachers need to model this for their students. Try out new innovative teaching approaches. Doesn’t work? Learn from it! #ohedchat#BellsLetsTalk
A3: it teaches Ss to overcome "failures" and strive for personal success. Ss need to see that getting something wrong isn't an end but rather a start of a new path towards success. #ohedchat
I record my daughters answering this question each year along with ‘who do you want to help’. Last year my youngest said ‘I wanna solve the problem of not getting enough chocolate’ 😂😂😂😂
Q3: Everyday life proves to have adaptable moments. Teaching students and modeling these coping skills each day and acknowledging them of their own misery could be beneficial #ohedchat
Learning there's more than one approach helps us build problem-solving skills, ability to see other perspectives & points of view, creativity . . . #ohedchat
A3: life will happen to everyone! Teaching Ss how to critically think through a situation in relationships, finances, health issues, etc. will benefit everyone and those who we’re close to! Adaptabilityis Key not only in employment, but in life!#ohedchat
A3: When we allow students to take risks, try new ways of understanding, and explore multiple facets they are able to clearly define how they grow best and find what they are passionate about. I didn't love______ until I found out what I loved about it. #ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
A3: It not about when you understand something. It is about how you get there. This is critical if we are promoting a growth mindset and asking Ss to live it. This will = future success. #ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
A3 Everyone's path to achieving more and reaching mastery is different. Modeling & providing opportunities for adaptable learning helps students tap into those abilities in their own terms.
#ohedchat
A3 Many Ss see a disconnect between their life and school. School is something to check off the list. Making learning adaptable makes it more relevant to their real life. #ohedchat
A3: life is all about adaptability. School should be the safe place where you learn, sometimes fail, and grow. Yes, school is hard but so is life especially if you cant adapt.
#ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
A3. We need to ask our Ss how they would like to change the world? And if so, how would they go about doing it? How can we solve the major problems in the world and create change?#ohedchat
A3) There is personal satisfaction of "a job well done." Not because you get paid or because it's graded. Intrinsic motivation MUST be part of being #FutureReady#ohedchat
"Student learning is optimized when students are actively involved in their own learning. Students must talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experience, and apply it in their own lives.” - Chickering and Gamson #bellletstalk#ohedchat
A3 Many Ss see a disconnect between their life and school. School is something to check off the list. Making learning adaptable makes it more relevant to their real life. #ohedchat
A3: Adaptable learning = life skill. Life is full of twists, turns, adjustments. Being adaptable will help us in our avocations, our relationships with others, daily chores . . . #ohedchat
A3 Adaptability necessitates reflection and iteration ==> skills necessary to thrive beyond end of course or procuring employment.
Adaptability is life. #ohedchat
A3: Long term success is not about the end. It is the small steps, the process that changes students as learners and people. We need to help and then let them take their own steps as they see them. #ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
Glad I could stop in! Need to rest up to overcome this little bug I had the past few days! Always wonderful to be a part of this chat! Thanks everyone! #ohedchat
A3: adaptable learning will not only prepare students for the changing workforce, it will prepare them for the unexpected in life! Turbulence that is often thrown our way will be easier to handle with coping mechanism and thinking critically and clearly. #ohedchat
Q3 - #ohedchat
How does adaptable learning apply to more than just employability? How can it help students reach for more and achieve personal mastery?
A3: Won’t it be great to have adults that are trained to not give up, work through problems, and think outside the box in marriages, relationships, churches, community meetings? I look at these kids who are learning these skills and think how nothing can stop them! ❤️ #ohedchat
A3: It not about when you understand something. It is about how you get there. This is critical if we are promoting a growth mindset and asking Ss to live it. This will = future success. #ohedchat
Definitely. My grandmother is nearly 100--the changes she has seen are astounding. The rate of change is even more astounding. How do we help Ss be ready for even faster change, if not for adapting? #ohedchat
A3: Adaptable learning can also build caracter. That is a great way do add value to ourselves, to improving. And by adding value to ourselves, we can add value to others. #OhEdChat
A3. We need to ask our Ss how they would like to change the world? And if so, how would they go about doing it? How can we solve the major problems in the world and create change?#ohedchat
@JakeMillerTech Parents, teachers, and community members. We also hold our @News4FHMS 5th Grade Parent Preview this same evening so they can explore how our students integrate technology into their learning. #OHedchat
A3) Adaptable learning shows students there isn’t just one way to learn or do something. Sometimes you need to get off the beaten path to experience/learn something to help us grow! #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
A3: Adaptable learning can also build caracter. That is a great way do add value to ourselves, to improving. And by adding value to ourselves, we can add value to others. #OhEdChat
A3: Could adaptability be more of a possibility if the stigma of passing/failing, report cards, etc. were gone? Would Ss become more focused on doing their personal best instead of comparing themselves to their peers and shutting down when they fall behind? #ohedchat
A3 Adaptability allows Ss to grow without needing constant reassurance. Competent employees seek answers, question the process & fix problems w/out someone holding their hand. Adaptability in our Ss will reap lifetime dividends #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
Yes! Always look for the most relevant. We used to give speeches in class. Now, Ss ID a problem in the community, present their solutions in Innovative Problem Solving Fair to community leaders. #ohedchat
A3: Striving for a goal is not always about the end result, but the path in which we got there. Finding student leaders help because a lot of S leaders want their classmates to also be leaders. There has to be that internal motivation! #ohedchat
It's interesting how soft skills seem to be at the center of so much of this discussion. They are really at the heart of what we need to help Ss work to develop. #ohedchat
A4: We have to step beyond what we know, what we've always done, & how we were taught. Take a deep breath & take that step. It may be wild, crazy, radical--and it may work better than we dream, or we may learn a whole lot about what NOT to do. #ohedchat
A3: Could adaptability be more of a possibility if the stigma of passing/failing, report cards, etc. were gone? Would Ss become more focused on doing their personal best instead of comparing themselves to their peers and shutting down when they fall behind? #ohedchat
Yes! Always look for the most relevant. We used to give speeches in class. Now, Ss ID a problem in the community, present their solutions in Innovative Problem Solving Fair to community leaders. #ohedchat
A4: leadership creating expectations & modeling forward thinking hinders schools progress. We want Ts to model risk taking & creativity, but if leaders aren't willing to do the same, it won't happen #ohedchat
A4: We have to step beyond what we know, what we've always done, & how we were taught. Take a deep breath & take that step. It may be wild, crazy, radical--and it may work better than we dream, or we may learn a whole lot about what NOT to do. #ohedchat
A4. Perhaps we are too anchored by non-innovative mandates and ubiquitous standards-testing.
Are our policy makers on the future driven bus?
Just thinking our loud.....#ohedchat
A4: Top down requirements don't allow for education in the individual classroom to be molded into what they need to be. To often we think classes should look the same when teaching the same content. #ohedchat
A4 I am held back by an unstated lack of trust by OH legislators, who seem to think w/o standardized testing and constant observation, I will fail my Ss. #ohedchat
Definitely. My grandmother is nearly 100--the changes she has seen are astounding. The rate of change is even more astounding. How do we help Ss be ready for even faster change, if not for adapting? #ohedchat
A4 many stakeholders (teachers, admin, parents) are blind to the positive correlation between tech integration, innovative teaching, differentiated learning, PBL, etc. and the all important student achievement (read: test scores). They think it's zero sum. Not so.
#ohedchat
So many barriers! But we have to have a NO LIMITS perspective. We must find a way or make a way. That's being adaptable. We can't control what we can't control. #ohedchat
A4. The biggest key is us as Ts being willing to let go and change our model of teaching. Create a student centered learning environment and look for ways to show Ss their potential and value in order to create buy in and ownership of learning #ohedchat
A4: PEOPLE. Grassroots to change education. No good comes from the top (govt) down. It comes from people who decide to do what's right, and set fire to the barriers and redtape #revolutionize#ohedchat
It's not always about the end. @2131ChangeAgent You came to mind and our last grade level meeting and discussion of math. It's not always about the final answer.
#ohedchat A4: look down the hallways. See the Ts that aren't here on Twitter chats (or the like)? And don't think they need to be? And think you're weird for being here? That's what's holding schools back. It's up to us..collectively. Leadership needs to make THEM uncomfortable.
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
The “this is how we’ve always done it” mindset inhibits creativity, progress and innovation. It is very important for teachers to always reflect on their teaching practices and never be afraid to try new things in the classroom. Model a growth mindset! #bellletstalk#ohedchat
#A4: I believe the standards, or amount of standards get in the way. Do you think @Google sends out a set of standards for innovation....but we do. #statusquodisruptor#ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
This has been my lifelong frustration. I hate that policy is made and there often are not educators involved in it. We need more representation by Ts and Admins in legislature. (One of my goals in life). #ohedchat
We need to be the change agents. We need to stop saying "we can't because of testing" and just do it. Nothing will change if we don't change. #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
A4: Current outdated school structure, fear of transforming pedagogy, fear of "ruffling feathers" if we are too innovative, bad habits, and when people stop learning and growing. #OhEdChat
A4: we need to not fear mistakes and allow our staff and our students to dream big, facilitate their growth through coaching and most importantly encourage people through positive feedback and purposeful well delivered constructive criticism and support to improve. #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
We encourage our students to take risks and celebrate failures as learning opportunities - we need to model this risk taking as teachers. #bellletstalk#ohedchat
Love it! My 11th graders interviewed local professionals to ID a problem in that field. The dog park feels more Ss driven, which is perfect for #FutureDriven! #ohedchat
A4: I think the connection to student success based on state standardized assessment and funding issues can hold progress back- however, Ts and leaders must be willing to focus on the learning process and the future of what is best for Ss? #ohedchat
A4: trusting in the adaptable piece. Stimulating and hitting DOK levels while also being innovative in a standardized world. That also means admin and building support and trust. #ohedchat
A4: Too many drivers of policy at the local, state, and national levels are building, working in, running, and measuring educational systems based on what they knew as successful because it worked for them...when they were in school. #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat
Google seems to almost exist in the future. They are always pushing forward. What is holding schools back and how can we clear these barriers to be like the most relevant organizations in our world?
A4: the same syst that has been in place for decades. Its the same syst that was developed to staff factors. Go to work, take a break (lunch), work some more, go home, & repeat. Other countries go to school less time, value play, embrace phy edu, appreciate prog.
#ohedchat
The government? Always playing catch up to what is demanded by the people (if it's good) or by special interests. Superintendents, admins- I'm not considering the top in most situations.#ohedchat
#ohedchat A4: If every T who said "I don't think we should teach to tests" didn't.....everything WOULD change. But if it's not everyone, then some look "good" at the expense of others....so nobody changes. Classic "Prisoner's Dilemma."

And so often, what seemed to work so well in the past doesn't work as well . . . because it's a different class, different year, things have changed. We have to change, too. #ohedchat
A4) I think this can speak volumes to schools when thinking about the future from @garyvee. Don’t give up when things don’t work out immediately but look at the big picture and what we are preparing students for #ohedchat
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
I'm slowly moving most of my curriculum to being completely project-based (on student proposal), gradeless and based on real-world scenarios. I think students learn adapatability when they find their own problems in their own project work. #ohedchat
A4 Budget constraints & limitations of public funding are not stop gaps for Google. Their "people resource pile" is always stacked. Schools may do well to study the model Google uses to succeed & lobby hard, to make change! Equitable salaries wouldn't hurt either! #ohedchat

My 10th are asking local service organizations about what service projects might help with some of the above (after researching the prob and writing a paper). #ohedchat
Ah so true! Societally we need to look at the big picture and ask ourselves what it is we value? Does shorter time in school automatically mean less learning much like the idea of more time in school automatically equal smarter kids? Quality > quantity #ohedchat
A4 - With educating students; schools must be flexible and understanding that change is just fine. We must adapt and be positive about new things that are not “normal.” #ohedchat
A4. Encourage and empower colleagues to move at their own pace. Eventually they will be comfortable enough to move even further with their integration journey! #ohedchat
Yes and fear of change or never wanting to get uncomfortable. We’ve got to get comfortable, getting uncomfortable in order to be great for kids! #ohedchat
A4. Perhaps we are too anchored by non-innovative mandates and ubiquitous standards-testing.
Are our policy makers on the future driven bus?
Just thinking our loud.....#ohedchat
A4: Honestly, if schools continue to teach every S the same thing at the same time, there will not be proper growth. Ss will become unmotivated. The same day-to-day thing needs to be gone. We aren't going to be able to say how each day will end, and thats fine #ohedchat
A5: bringing creativity & meaningful projects to every classroom. Allow Ss #FedEx days/time, showcase Ss work, increase community service & internship requirements for graduation #ohedchat
A4: Schools have always been a safe place with right and wrong answers. Uncertainty is scary to those still in that mindset. We as leaders, must model risk-taking, acceptance, and strength in the face of uncertainty...because that is where students are headed. #ohedchat

#ohedchat A5: Three things. Metacognition, metacognition, and metacognition.
The act of thinking about your own learning will prepare you and Ss for ANYTHING. I believe this 100%.
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A5 Creative thinking, hands down. They figure out deliberate practice on their own, like when my 8 yr old watched how to videos to figure out red stone switches in Minecraft. #ohedchat
Yes and fear of change or never wanting to get uncomfortable. We’ve got to get comfortable, getting uncomfortable in order to be great for kids! #ohedchat
A4) innovation in the classroom doesn't have to be radically different. Change in large systems is slow but will happen if we will it to. Focus on skills rather the knowledge. Growth, relationships, values. They are eternal for all learners. #ohedchat
A5) I always go back to @DrTonyWagner 7 skills. Communication, curiosity, critical thinking, agility, accessing information, entrepreneurship, collaboration. Lessons and courses need to incorporate these skills. #ohedchat
A5: I say this all the time: our main goal should be equipping students with the communication skills to be successful after graduation. This includes simple social skills on how to communicate with others but also focusing on respect even when in disagreement! #ohedchat
I'm slowly moving most of my curriculum to being completely project-based (on student proposal), gradeless and based on real-world scenarios. I think students learn adapatability when they find their own problems in their own project work. #ohedchat
A4: While technology is not synonymous with innovation, I do believe technology will be a key component and some schools lack the tech resources that will help them prepare students for the role(s) tech will play in careers of the future. #OhEdChat
A5. Problem Solving Abilities. If we can get our Ss to think about problems, make sense of them and think on a global manner of solving these problems. They will be prepared for anything. #ohedchat
A5: Top priority - for my own children as learners and for our students - I want them to walk in to educators who meet them where they are and show them how far they can go - top priority - HIGH EXPECTATIONS of ourselves and our students. #ohedchat
The 'gig' economy is providing lots of opportunities for creative people. Some are earning a living with multiple streams of income. Interesting stuff! #ohedchat
A5: In an unpredictable world, students need to be adaptable, lifelong learners. Let students take the drivers seat of their learning. Encourage students to explore their passions. As the teacher, we can help to facilitate and guide this learning. #ohedchat#bellletstalk
I agree with all of this. I am trying it to approach from what's in my realm of control at this point. What can I change? How can I adapt? If I can figure this out I can model for Ss. #ohedchat
A5) I think students need to be uncomfortable with being uncomfortable. They need to be okay with making mistakes and know that making mistakes is a part of learning. #ohedchat
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A4: If we are requiring Ss to use #grit & #perserve than we as their role models need to have the same #resilience to push through toward a solution, nothing is “1 & Done”...Complacency is not Relevant-Ss deserve our tweaking until we get it right! #ohedchat
Q4 - #ohedchat

Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A4. We are sometimes apprehensive regarding the “unknown”. For many educators moving forward tech adoption and adaption is not easy. #ohedchat@LemarrTreadwell
A5: So much is needed--critical thinking & reflecting are part of this. So something worked--why? What did I learn about problem-solving? what did I learn about myself? #ohedchat
A5: If Ss can communicate, collaborate, accept differences, and find and use the resources around them, they will be able to achieve the unpredictable. #ohedchat
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A5 - Reminding students to “think outside of the box” and be creative. Allow students to work together at solving new problems. But also teaching them that failure is acceptable. Learn from your mistakes and try again. #ohedchat
A5: A5: Top priority - for my own children as learners and for our students - I want them to walk in to educators who meet them where they are and show them how far they can go - top priority - HIGH EXPECTATIONS of ourselves and our students. #ohedchat
A5: Deliberate practice needs to be mastered to allow for free-flowing creativity. Once it is, the sky’s the limit. Hard to put a % on infinity, but practice is the foundation #ohedchat

A5: Failing Forward, Failing is just a stepping stone toward Success! Baby Stepping Natural Consequences like in the real world...to help Ss transition as they get into H.S. When a Ss falls, guide Ss to get back up! #ohedchat
Q5 - #ohedchat

Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A5: been working with @battelleforkids on 21st Century Literacies that go beyond traditional literacy: media, innovative, and disciplinary...literacy across all areas. #ohedchat
Q5 - #ohedchat
Deliberate practice and creative thinking are both valuable. But what should be our top priority in schools to prepare students for an unpredictable world?
A5) understanding the human condition. Know what you need, and what you don't. If you don't understand what you need others will tell you and profit. #ohedchat
A6: communication & relationship building are the key to any culture. Our Ss need to be able to do both to succeed. Tech skills alone can't build culture, doesn't matter what organization it is. Its our job to prepare Ss to think, work w/ others & show compassion #ohedchat
The article I shared earlier leads me to believe we've focused a little too much on practice and not enough on experimenting. But that's not to say practice is bad. #ohedchat
A5: Deliberate practice needs to be mastered to allow for free-flowing creativity. Once it is, the sky’s the limit. Hard to put a % on infinity, but practice is the foundation #ohedchat
It's that time #ohedchat. I have to take off. Tanks for the great chat tonight! I am always thinking, reflecting, and learning when @DavidGeurin and @bobby__dodd are involved! Great job tonight!
A5:soft skills, how to properly use social media, how to manage money, how to be a morally upstanding citizen. These r skills that impact r kids as they go into the real world. When u interview its not do u know the sq root of 7.3. Can u look me in the eyes & speak prof.
#ohedchat

A6) High Tech, high touch. Tech is the way we make communication easier. Not replace relationships. Tech saves time AFTER we put in the time face to face. Tech can be eliminated, our touch cannot. #ohedchat
A6: I think technology has made it more difficult to build people skills especially in difficult situations. #ohedchat That has to change...collaboration and relationships are key. Makes me think of Apollo 13.
A6: People skills can be lost within the technology advances being made. Interactions can become lost. Ss learn people skills through collaboration and communication with peers. #ohedchat
A6: as more tech comes out people will continue to try and have it make “connecting” easier.. however, genuine face-to-face interaction cannot be replaced and is vital in a healthy psychological and emotional well being! People need this to be fulfilled! Be present! #ohedchat
A6 Social and digital media can make us be more isolated but feel as though we are connected. Learning soft skills help keep face to face connections alive. #ohedchat
A6: in order to compete with technology for jobs we will need to hone the skills that technology is incapable of... emotional intelligence encompasses the competitive edge! #ohedchat
Both are important! When we went 1:1, we wanted to increase tech and the conversations students were having about learning. That was our goal! #ohedchat
A6) High Tech, high touch. Tech is the way we make communication easier. Not replace relationships. Tech saves time AFTER we put in the time face to face. Tech can be eliminated, our touch cannot. #ohedchat
A6: The ability to communicate, to have compassion & empathy will never go out of style. With all the technology Ss use today, the skill to communicate face to face is becoming a lost art/skill. Learning facial & body language. #ohedchat
A6: It is easy for adults and children to get “lost” in technology - interacting with each other through technology and using technology to share/present ideas requires “people skills” - we must be able to communicate and collaborate effectively in many ways. #ohedchat
A6 A computer will frustrate you, but you can walk away w/out issue; however, we need to be able to share opinions, concerns, ideas, to real people where empathy may be needed. #ohedchat
A6 As we become increasingly digital/technological, emotional intelligence will be even more valuable. It will be in demand. We are seeing the need for it now, all around us. #ohedchat
Building relationships is the utmost important thing. With tech, we have a quicker and easier way of doing things, but we will never not have each other. Being able to build a bond and trust is important because next comes the tech #ohedchat
A6. Relationships, Relationships! They are what matter the most! Being able to collaborate, communicate and work well with others is important. #ohedchat
Yelling at my computer, it's okay. But we have to possess the skills to communicate our frustrations with people and be able to move forward. #ohedchat
