Q1 Q1 Q1 What are the core beliefs to abide by and how do they drive a proficiency-based program? https://t.co/167V0G3AjD
Hi I'm Sara from Indiana. I'm in the education program at IUPUI
Q1 What are the core beliefs to abide by and how do they drive a proficiency-based program? https://t.co/IB5v0M1dWH
Q1 Q1 Q1 What are the core beliefs to abide by and how do they drive a proficiency-based program? https://t.co/167V0G3AjD
A1: That being able to USE the language is most important
A1 I'm feeling a mismatch with the ACTFL TL position statement and developing my own, but not there yet
A1: proficiency is not limited to dates, numbers, times, greetings = Ss should be strongly encouraged to take more than 2 yrs
I'm sporting my green as well!
This is the key for me as well! Break the "I took X years and can't say anything!" mold https://t.co/T5RMSiQ4xS
A1: That being able to USE the language is most important
A1 Every human with a healthy brain can acquire another language.
A1- All students can learn!
I'm going from 8 in yr 3 to 32 next year!
One of my core beliefs is that Ss be able to USE the language and even be OK w/making mistakes to be able to communicate.
A1 Recognition of the importance of proficiency guidelines & use of TL in class.
a1: language acquisition is a continuum, and everybody can grow--meets learners where they are at to help them build skills
A1 Using language for a real purpose
A1 communication in real world purpose
A1 - that all students can achieve at least a basic level of proficiency
YES. And my growth point: that not every healthy brain will. A lot of competition for that real estate. https://t.co/adDkgtkZJY
A1 Every human with a healthy brain can acquire another language.
I actually SAID that at about French!
A1 all kiddos are part of the community & can learn
A1 use of authentic materials instead of textbooks
A1 #1 goal is communication... at any level!
Good thing you were the star of my story, non? ;]
A1 Using the language in other settings then the language class
A1 our purpose is to help students COMMUNICATE--maybe with themselves as much as the world around them
A!: core belief: we teach the language not about the language.
A1 Use language in real contexts, for communication; everyone has an opportunity to participate & learn
A1 Focus of each lesson and assessment is on communication
Yep, and tons of factors involved! https://t.co/MtHeFHfxV6
YES. And my growth point: that not every healthy brain will. A lot of competition for that real estate. https://t.co/adDkgtkZJY
A1 Every human with a healthy brain can acquire another language.
A1: ALL Ss can learn a new language! During teacher prep program actually a WL T tell me some Ss are too stupid to learn TL!
A1 respect and rapport are foundational to learner success
A1 That Ss need to do more than conjugate verbs--they need to be able to understand and speak the TL
A1 - proficiency does not require perfect grammar and an endless vocabulary. Get your point across.
Joining a bit late -> Natalia, French, H.S. WI
A1: L2 can be accessed by all; work toward goals; it's a process; TL use must be there
In Elem I had to use script to write papers in a new class each month would that work for lang?
A1 Teaching with Comprehensible Input the language not about the Language.
A1 using the language in a realistic and engaging setting.
A1 And Ss HAVE to know that I will not allow them to crash and burn. Have to trust me.
How do we define communication? Big word with room for interpretation.
That language is a skill and acquired through use.
A1 Lots of I can statements that focus on communicative goals
even those who are challenged or seem to fall between the cracks!
One of my beliefs is that sts need TONS of input, and it MUST be compelling. Keep 'em coming back for more
A1-must use the language so that people can understand from sympathetic to native speakers as we move up
Don't forget to include the answer number (A1, A2, A3, etc.) in your answer, and the hashtag!
A1 provide as much input as possible with loads of opportunity to USE what they are learning
That classrooms are communities and learning happens best when learners have established relationships with each other.
WORD. Language is for building bridges of communication--not burning them https://t.co/nxOw2dPXSY
A1 - proficiency does not require perfect grammar and an endless vocabulary. Get your point across.
A2 Grades based on Proficiency standards not numbers, for a start
A1- assessing on all the modes of communication create well-rounded language learners/speakers
Language learning is being able to get one's point across in TL with increased accuracy based on exposure/previous experience.
WHATTHE https://t.co/LnmFkWD3Pl
A1: ALL Ss can learn a new language! During teacher prep program actually a WL T tell me some Ss are too stupid to learn TL!
Awesome summary.....awesome https://t.co/2M9CEfIwbW
Language learning is being able to get one's point across in TL with increased accuracy based on exposure/previous experience.
I always remind kids that, when they hear a non-native Eng. spkr they're not perfect, but they can understand
Authentic materials are so great for Ss.
A1: Grades are never punitive. No Ss waiting for a "Gotcha" moment from T.
Dumped formal grmr inst for 1st time this yr. Kids are communicating just fine
Jill from VA but participating during spring break in South Carolina at the beach. Beach read: The Language Teachers's Toolkit.
Welcome - looking forward to hearing from you! Don't forget to include the hashtag and you're in
A1 Anyone and Everyone can learn a new language! Learning takes place over a lifetime and we are never done learning a language.
¡Buenas noches, ! A little late tonight... packing for a 2 week vacation:)
A1: Using language to connect with others, to learn about them & their point of view/view of the world in order to change your own
I love seeing other teachers saying this!
Great to see you tonight!
A1 Communication=interpreting written/oral texts, interpersonal & presenting ideas in writing or orally. Yes?
exactly! They learned English therefore...
We're still on Q1: What are the core beliefs to abide by & how do they drive a proficiency-based program?
exactly. I remember a time when I thought I needed to dish out tiny building blocks 1 at a time for them to build
Oh that's so exciting! Where to?
Nice! I've found focusing on the metalanguage analysis is too much of a block for many Ss.
Thank you, High school teacher at Royse City Texas
I like it! https://t.co/u0rJGl1iaQ
A1: Using language to connect with others, to learn about them & their point of view/view of the world in order to change your own
I say give them a Lego set, some exanples, and see what they can do
A1 The Ss have got to understand what proficiency is in order to use structures that will bump them to the next level.
Always great if the Ss can use it outside the classroom. I love field trips when possible.
helped me see value in contrastive grammar helped me see importance of reps
Oh me too....now the communication is the goal & the building blocks are 'supports' not the focus https://t.co/9r27DY7lWo
exactly. I remember a time when I thought I needed to dish out tiny building blocks 1 at a time for them to build
Welcome to ! I hope you enjoy it...so much learning going on every session :)
Even writing or recording audio or video for another class can be great.
Re Q1: I LOVE how much emphasis I am seeing on (a) all Ss can acquire languages and (b) language exists for communication!
I mean, I've thought like that...but I don't remember why taught? https://t.co/eQTP36rSi5
Almost burst into tears hearing T say 100% correct spelling is critical or how would Ss know how 2 say words? :(
Q2 What tools help Ts, districts, & fledgling programs & how do they build proficiency-based programs? https://t.co/9YxS7U16vL
A1b So it becomes cyclical—T helps Ss with structures who talk to T in TL who gives them more. It can get messy, but I like messy.
didnt teach alphabet for 1st time in 18 years. Havent seen drastic change in spelling
A1 another core belief: we open minds, we bring down walls. I don't mean to sound political but...
that's such a great statement. When we connect with others, we can surely change the world!
Frantically looking for the question!
I think I’ve still got one foot in this mode!…. Trying to change. https://t.co/5Phei3n42N
exactly. I remember a time when I thought I needed to dish out tiny building blocks 1 at a time for them to build
A1 Core belief: we are similar people separated by language and culture but can learn to communicate and understand each other.
Q2 Q2 What tools help Ts, districts, & fledgling programs & how do they build proficiency-based programs? https://t.co/a5pHRjZ5iJ
Q2 What tools help Ts, districts, & fledgling programs & how do they build proficiency-based programs? https://t.co/9YxS7U16vL
A2 - Over time! Avoid burnout!
A2 ACTFL Can-Do's, performance descriptors, IPA manual
AMEN to that! I did spell with list on board then act out. Fun watching kids looking 4 wrd b4 me!
That's amazing! I hope you enjoy the trip! I am glad you still made it to tonight's
We are going away from grammar, and focusing on usage almost equally, using videos that they themselves record, based on topic.
A2: I feel like if kids want to come to your class and they can SHOW that they are gaining awesome skills...the rest will follow
A2: see what model programs have done; start small, dream big!
A3 Teacher Resources- on Thurs.helps you focus on proficiency
A3 Teacher Resources- on Thurs.helps you focus on proficiency
A2 For me, having a curriculum to build off of was key! I based my own off of SCS and JCPS curricula!
great point. Makes me want to think about reorganizing my grading categories
A2 Knowledge is power. If Ts dont see proficiency practices at work, why would they change?
A2: so many guides, rubrics, etc. already out there
A2 Conferences, TPRS, incorporating music, speaking TL 90% of the time, and, of course, !
A2: Support from administrators in getting away from legacy style language classes are vital.
A2 for many elem programs, parental support is key- though not a tool, it keeps many of us in existence
A2 access to technology to show students the target language communities are a click away
A2: Supportive admin is SO important. Don't need to know it already, but willing to learn about it is so helpful
A2) The best is seeing other teachers do it. Either videos of classes or actually having trainers come in is great
A2: 1. Comprehensible Input, 2. Authentic resources 3. Performance Assessments
Ouais! The new SCS lvl 1 stuff blows my mind!
I mean, it's a habit of thought you have to logic out of yourself. What baby learned preterite 1st?
Ts understanding proficiency and being able to communicate that 2 sts, parents and admin
and I am still working on my English as well as my Spanish. I'm even working on Mandarin lol (I have 3 words now!)
A3 Show Proficiency Pyramid from ACTFL and models for each level to SS sort out
agreed but many new teachers are lost on how to take a unit plan and make it lesson plans - need support A2
Agree. How often do I have to know how to say H in French? https://t.co/9iwhdymEUQ
didnt teach alphabet for 1st time in 18 years. Havent seen drastic change in spelling
I am lucky to have TOY in my backyard
A2: I think materials are the MOST helpful thing. We're so lucky most of it's free and done for us!
Those are awesome little troves of gold!
A2 Observation of and regular interaction with other programs that have already been working toward what we want to be doing
A2 I recently heard an administrator say that proficiency-based curricula don't have enough rigor.
A2: Most Ts will agree that teaching to communicate in TL is main goal of program; discuss evaluations that reflect that!
A2 - For us Ts, a group to work with is invaluable, esp. someone who has exp., and maybe someone close to where you are
I've loved having devices for this very purpose! Expose Ss to the real world! https://t.co/PfvM3bhY5C
A2 access to technology to show students the target language communities are a click away
A2 ACTFL standards to build a curriculum off of, backward planning=knowing where your sts are going before you start teaching
I think the building of cultural bridges is a huge reason to teach language.
A2Have sts read and check off their can dos, look at the bicycle proficiency chart
Sounds like that Admin needs an invite to come be a student for a day!
Conferences, langchat, your blogs, online resources have allowed for experimentation this year & I love it!
I struggle with this as well! I'm always thankful to have as a resource! https://t.co/mS2RVkiadr
agreed but many new teachers are lost on how to take a unit plan and make it lesson plans - need support A2
We don't even use textbooks any more
Hopefully not one of your own. I would probably cry! :(
A2 NEW TEACHERS NEED GOOD MENTORS. Like, not even an option.
Thank you! Oh, I plan on being on from abroad:)
A2- Conferences and professional development opportunities are soo energizing!
Shoot, I still need help with that!
A2: when we’ve been the products of non-proficy-based prgms, we need the chance to get out and connect with mentors who are!
A1/A2 must have proficiency targets for each class. Without, you don't know where you are going or how to help learners get there
A2 A network of like-minded teachers—in your building, district, state or even —to collaborate. Leverage your strengths.
A2: Seeing a superb example for upper levels help us know end goal.
How to find if in a more "learn about the language" environment?
A2: Non-negotiable:Take the darn textbook OFF the pedestal! It's a guide...at best.
I think that has been a pretty great one! https://t.co/lqmGaLTTR6
A2 NEW TEACHERS NEED GOOD MENTORS. Like, not even an option.
IPAs have definitely moved my instruction to more proficiency based.
Also educating parent on benefits of ANY lang; not their perceived value of one lang over another.
indeed! All novice ss say for months about franc. culture is "weird", then ss develop appreciation & understanding
A2 Clear learning outcomes for each level; fellow teachers who think the same way
Currently spinning my wheels switching the curriculum however I'm more intrigued daily :) A2 https://t.co/DVpicarcrq
agreed but many new teachers are lost on how to take a unit plan and make it lesson plans - need support A2
one misinformed admin. It's nothing but rigor. In fact I would argue any program that isn't based on prof lacks rigor.
Yes! build off of something that is high-quality and showing results & you can tweak it to fit your students
Do most administrators have an opinion either way? I've met few that really understand LT.
jealous. I can hardly wait to see what I'll be able to do with Ss once we are 1-to-1
Blogs can be useful also. That is how I fell into more tchng that focues on communication, not grammar
As scary as it is, sharing results is so helpful for all! Helps you grow and help other Ts too. https://t.co/nfcv6Ps3NW
Yes! build off of something that is high-quality and showing results & you can tweak it to fit your students
Ditto! There are so many ways to connect & learn w/ tech. Love it. https://t.co/hAc9YlKaEi
Conferences, langchat, your blogs, online resources have allowed for experimentation this year & I love it!
Having students use the checklist themselves - love that idea! https://t.co/2GlRZyjNAy
A2Have sts read and check off their can dos, look at the bicycle proficiency chart
Yes! When I gave my first IPA, ss said "you did not teach us to do that", I realized I had to rethink my teaching
Every one (all 2) that I've tossed this idea to (& all parents) have been SO on board w/USING more TL more
and many aren't even great guides! Pinterest offers better "curriculum" sometimes :/
I’ve gotten some things from this year for just that reason!
A2 models of baby steps to increase interaction and reading
This is always tough. I come from the school that if you get thrown in, you learn quickly. Can be hard though
A2 online forums like langchat & Facebook groups allow Ts to connect and learn from other Ts
Not even a guide - a resource like an Algebra textbook and often not as good as YouTube https://t.co/m9QphGcoSt
A2: Non-negotiable:Take the darn textbook OFF the pedestal! It's a guide...at best.
Yes! But this sure isn't easy https://t.co/eZbGIpQYvy
Also educating parent on benefits of ANY lang; not their perceived value of one lang over another.
I would add that your targets need to be transparent! I learned that quickly this year! https://t.co/Nz6ePPruNI
A1/A2 must have proficiency targets for each class. Without, you don't know where you are going or how to help learners get there
my admin is just excited to hear kids speaking Spanish in the halls :)
Sharing our failures too! Fail forward, and help others do the same!
And there is the danger that, w/o support, new teachers just fall back on the book and grammar exercises.
so true, so tough to do when you have 4-5 preps
I tried using the text last month, but my Ss didn’t like it. They said, “What do we do with this?”
RE: Q2 - does anyone's gradebook allow a prof based grade? Or are you stuck to letter grades?
You'll want to talk to about that one!
that was going to be my A1: assessment & feedback drives the learning (the right kind of assessment that is)
Sounds like you have a good one. Care to share :)
Neither do I. I wish we were allocated $$ for other ressources that help sts proficiency! https://t.co/mJomItTxK0
We don't even use textbooks any more
I left a grammar worksheet w/ sub (long story) and afterwards the Ss said, "We think it's time for a story, Mlle."
Students should know what the target is, and how they can reach the next one! Don't hide it from them, essentially.
I’m right there with you on number of preps! And at two different schools. https://t.co/F2JTlOiGBb
so true, so tough to do when you have 4-5 preps
Shameless plug, but we want to help share the how things work (and fail) in a proficiency based program. https://t.co/s0pLw02NRe
I think does the AAPPL! I wish my school had the $$$!
I do prof but have to convert to grade at end
that's tough! When I went down from 5 to 4 preps, I thought I was in paradise!
Haha. I ran an entire school off the book. Then they combined branches and all had to start using the book.
This is a problem! Hard to shift mindset when a letter grade is end result!
RT : A2 online forums like langchat & Facebook groups allow Ts to connect and learn from other Ts
, our administrative team determines who teaches what sections, but we determine the how.
on the other hand when I started teaching for IPAs, my kids saw HUGE improvements
. I hear you! Never had fewer than 5 preps, usually 6. That's not even legal in some districts!
Tons of complaints everywhere. They were bored and disengaged.
This is why I pair up with another Admin when doing walkthroughs--to calibrate & build their capacity of look fors
Check out ’s blog for some ideas. She really hits the nail on the head.
Could lend itself to Ss using proficiency guidelines themselves https://t.co/wx1slHUkKI
Students should know what the target is, and how they can reach the next one! Don't hide it from them, essentially.
saved me https://t.co/ndYWEZBf8v
Blogs can be useful also. That is how I fell into more tchng that focues on communication, not grammar
Q3 What common tools should Ts have access to & how can they contribute to a proficiency-based prog ram? https://t.co/ny3lQOgkFP
it is, but can be done slowly and in steps
I worked with a school once were parents ended up paying for STAMP/AAPPL. At another we build it into course fee.
Do you have to give one all the time? Can you just give them at the end and keep it formative in class?
A3 RUBRICS and performance assessment prompts!
I just align numbers with the levels, bump the level up to get 100 each 6 weeks
Was it motivating to students? Did it give accurate results?
agreed! I'm 2nd year teacher dept of 1 and it's so hard all on my own! and conferences save me!
A3 Professional Development
How are you so organized!? I'm jelly!!!
A3: ALL of the KEYS books!
A3 - Tech! Unblocked YouTube - even for Ss - has been an awesome resource for me this year!
I want to, but having trouble figuring out the payment... is a pro though
I'm always amazed how much I can learn in just 140 character convos.
I just bought them for me. Looking forward to digging in over spring break!
I would love to see more Teacher Field Trips so we can see those already successful! https://t.co/JZ7QAVX1Zo
A3 Professional Development
A3 Collaboration with other teachers; best ideas come from other teachers. :)
A3: AAPPL or similar; technology; time; space.
A3: I'd like on campus as my personal PB Sage. Alas, reading his work will have to do.
A3 Circling back to what mentioned earlier, I think it is key that every T have a mentor who teaches a language!
A3 Lots of just right books where students read at own level and build vocab
And quality undergrad programs
A3: DUH every WL teacher needs :D
A3) In my more impoverished schools, we only had marker, pen, and paper. Students taking together is the best resource
very motivating. we talked to kids all year about proficiency and now they had to show and deliver
A3 - rubrics, assessment ideas, technology, and authentic resources!
A3 technology in all schools, prof developmt monies (sufficient!), opportunities to observe other teachers
Exactly. With student-led prompts, they feel more engaged and will use higher structures. It’s real life!
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?????? You are a HERO. (Met T at w 19 classes, 2x/wk, 7 diff schools!)
as long as you use , yes we can see them :)
A3: Some tech in the classroom to engage kids in real lang w/real speakers: audio/video+interactive.
agreed. I am amazed at what my students can do in the language now
Perhaps the AP and IP themes/ideas? It helps show us real world goals for proficiency
What don't you like about the ones you use?
This is so key! Either common ones from the district or dept, but they should be on the same page. https://t.co/SJ5Jz7z84s
A3 RUBRICS and performance assessment prompts!
Yeah! There are great cases made for vertically aligning all levels to themes like this!
I believe all lang Ts need access to study abroad opportunities to continue their own journey
A3: a bit pricey but game-changing PD for me was the OPI/MOPI training from . Should be mandatory for all teachers.
Well, I guess funding is part of it for me and my wallet agrees with that statement!
What tech do you use? We have chromebooks, but I am not using them to their full potential
Don't forget the second part of Q3: how can these tools contribute to a proficiency-based program?
This 👇🏻👇🏻 https://t.co/FHrP0w0ZIu
A3 technology in all schools, prof developmt monies (sufficient!), opportunities to observe other teachers
Just an FYI, and I are doing a Keys to Planning book club this summer!
Def. There are many language communities in the US too for those on a budget. .
Focus on the can-do statements like just tweeted more than grammar/correctness.
A3 Technology (so many great tools, forums, and apps), other teachers, books, hands-on materials (for my little guys!), music
A3.5 In my case, a mentor is SO critical in working through the day-to-day logistics of a proficiency-based course!
Do you go through a T travel company? Which one? Look for good travel deals online?
Ts should have access to a digital portfolio service to show student growth
A3 Sources of compelling content in TL. Variety of genre, origin, difficulty, medium, etc. TONS OF CONTENT.
up until a few years ago, other then AP seminars, our region didn't offer a lot of PD for LOTE Teachers
Hard to find that balance between specific enough yet broad enough. https://t.co/9lTrQjnVcV
What don't you like about the ones you use?
A3: Anyone mention Tell Project? There's some pretty nice stuff on there.
Even those of us who have been teaching awhile could benefit from a mentor!
virtual? or in person? https://t.co/zI9YSP2Gyr
Just an FYI, and I are doing a Keys to Planning book club this summer!
If u don't know how 2 use your toolbox then how can u aim for proficiency? Ts must know how to get ss to show how
We are just getting ready to start 1-to-1. Already looking for ideas. https://t.co/7Vbb2zO5YM
What tech do you use? We have chromebooks, but I am not using them to their full potential
If you were to recommend ONE AAPPL assessment, what would it be?
A3 Can-do's help us make sure our lesson goals are aligned with proficiency level.
it's definitely a roadmap for HOW to do this RT : A3: Anyone mention Tell Project? There's some pretty nice stuff on there
A3 Youtube allows my sts to hear & see , bldg their vocab, their comprehension & cultural knowledge
A3b Tons of TL content is crucial bec T can't be only one to provide input, and without oodles of input there is no acquisition
RT : A3 Can-do's help us make sure our lesson goals are aligned with proficiency level.
My feeling is to keep tech reasonable in the class. Ss speaking w/ each other is always the most important.
I wonder if reaching out to district supervisor would help - if they would know how to connect. Otherwise,
Exactly! I think having someone to talk w/ about the proficiency "switch" is so important. It's why I !
here's a tough one: what can districts do with teachers who refuse to even meet halfway? Done growing, counting the days?
Some cool ideas are creating their own videos, dialogues, audio remixes.
have you seen a French curriculum around this idea?
Perhaps a Master's program would be helpful. is GREAT for this!
A3 Unity in the dept/district can help shape a school. If ALL Ts/Ss know what the goal is, everyone works together towards prof.
But, I always ask myself, could they do something similar w/o the tech. If so, then I do it w/o.
if a supervisor doesn't help or doesn't know, make sure to tell them about .
has pintrest boards loaded with Span TL content
just now joining the chat, but what is it?
Just b/c Ss have 1/2 grammar-based classes doesn't mean they can't benefit from well-planned prof. based b4/after!
I think it takes strong leadership/tough love.
Haha. For sure. Also saved them from making fun of my singing :)
As many of the greats have told me, your questions offer just as much as your answers!
We are required to have horizontal PLC meetings once a week, so all of us can be on the same page
Oh this is so important! My first few years of teaching HS Spanish were so rough! https://t.co/M0jds1wBgo
A2 NEW TEACHERS NEED GOOD MENTORS. Like, not even an option.
If you find the answer to this, call me.
Greetings Joining late to a discussion I'm super intersted in!
That’s a tough one, for sure. Work with admin to ensure evals represent best practices. Evals can affect change.
my district rewrite our curriculum to align to the AP themes even in middle school
A4: i'm ready for cookies.
would love to see a link to it when you are done
Q4 How do we use beliefs, tools, & resources to create unit/lesson planning in a prof-based program? https://t.co/hR63irDP7U
Welcome! It's a new mod kind of night!
. YES, I love 's boards--recommend them all the time!
I like CBI w/lang goals tied in for prof based units! Still working on what the perfect balance is though
Try and reignite their passion or help them move out. If you're not committed to your Ss, you should move on.
A4 my belief is that any tool or resource I use during a lesson needs to further my goal of communication.
A4 - The more I struggle with this in yr 2 of prof. based, the more I realize I lack focus on Can-Dos. That's my focus for summer
A4 start from what you want kids to be able to do at end of unit/theme.. then, create a road map to get there.
A4: great topic. I need to work on this.
A3 topics that scaffold to lead to and back from AP styled themes. Ts need to learn to choose resources to build lang skills.
A4 I also think about the authentic task in my assessment. What would someone REALLY do when watching a commercial?
“Backward design with the end in mind!”
A4) Bring in content and tools based on Ss interest and need.
A4 when planning new themes, I create a thematic web, brainstorming ideas, activities, etc, then prune the web based on goals for
I'm ALWAYS ready for cookies!
A4 ss centered and not just b/c a lesson is our fave.
our district mandated IPAs for sum mid term & final. I prefer bottom-up but this made Ts at least look at it
A4 Unit plann: goals based on can-dos for each mode, summ. assess/IPA lessons to practice/provide feedback
A4: I was reluctant at 1st, but I'm reallybuying into & believing in pulling a thread from discussion & progressing it, vs "units"
A4 I have to throw it back to session on planning at . If it's a dumb question/topic, don't do it.
A4 A focus on can-dos! These help me create relevant assessments, units, and lessons that focus on real-world skills!
A4: Last year was my aha moment. Marching Ss through a curriculum (set by me :/) was not working.
A4 I strive to have probing open-ended prompts that will get the Ss motivated in the TL. Like different facets of the target.
A4 - Think about the big picture. "How are students going to use this in real life?" Then pick what resources best support that.
search amy lenord on pintrest. She has multiple boards.
I like that visual picture… web… pruning…
our district has made chromebooks available to every student, and that has become one of our most valuable tools.
Do you happen to have a photo of this? https://t.co/nBgibvpoDS
A4 when planning new themes, I create a thematic web, brainstorming ideas, activities, etc, then prune the web based on goals for
I would love to hear more about how you do this!
I'd love to hear more about the Google tech you are using for language teaching purposes!
A4 - Essential questions help guide unit planning and lead to convos Ss want to have
A4: that might be the hardest of all. it all has to come together in lesson planning. easier said than done, right ?
. Hmmm...what happens with that type of employee in other fields?
can give you the low down & hook up on threads and progressions!
A4 pictures and simple news articles to provide students with link to real world topics. Make connections across curriculum.
A4: keep asking: how will this (& every) activity help my students meet the learning target that is based on a proficiency target
First leaving a set curriculum was scary for me, but quickly made and my Ss more excited about class than ever.
A4 Further communication and engage ss. Some things work with some ss but not with others. All about them! https://t.co/1ymqjvnAph
A4 my belief is that any tool or resource I use during a lesson needs to further my goal of communication.
Switching to standards based reporting has helped point out the "fluff" and cut down curriculum to language proficiency
To build on that point, don't get caught up in flashy tech gadget and forget what the purpose is.
A4: can I eliminate some of my favorite activities/projects because they don't support my beliefs in proficiency.
A4.5 A focus on backward design helps narrow unit focus to individual lesson focus, though it's still difficult!
A4: If the tools and resources aid the students in using the language, then those tools have served them well.
Do you tie a SBG # to a proficiency level? Or do you give one or the other?
Instead of organizing grade book by tests, projects, homework, etc. organize by mode of communication to see gaps.
Oh I love lesson plans! Now if we could just stick to them...
This also helps me to see how I need to organize my unit structure if I'm heavy in one/two modes. https://t.co/9R14LuPfUH
Instead of organizing grade book by tests, projects, homework, etc. organize by mode of communication to see gaps.
My lesson plans for next week look totally different after & 's workshop!
Takeaway: Can-Dos, Can-Dos, Can-Dos! I can't over-focus on this!
A4 Ideal state: Lang & cult can-do first -> Perf Asst planning -> all the CI and authentic resources to meet can-do & excite ss
Takeaway: I want to get here earlier!

TA: Prof based is a journey, but I need to be more organized like to bring myself to the next level!
As a 1st-year Spanish teacher, how do I start incorporating these components into my teaching? Or better yet, where do I start?
takeaway - I still have SO much to learn!
Time to pack. Congrats on your great job moderating !
My takeaway is maybe I need to reach out to newer teachers + I’m so thankful for good mentors!
TA: I need to sit down and write down my core beliefs.
Organizing grade book into 3 modes thanks
It was my first . My take aways? I love language teachers and collaboration! Thanks for having me. I'll be back!
Thank you for a great chat!
I try to split. I often give 4 grades for one sum assessment: reading, writing, listening, speaking
Go to a Blaine Ray conference
so agree. I've let go of those even in elementary bc they just don't support the work. (sorry I'm late to the game)
It was great to have you with us! Hope you'll join us again!
TA I need to be more organized, and need help to get where I need to be.
A4 reality check: do your best and just keep CI-ing https://t.co/Upmv3VZ9r9
A4 Ideal state: Lang & cult can-do first -> Perf Asst planning -> all the CI and authentic resources to meet can-do & excite ss
TA: I need to find a mentor or observe a langchat pro!
My take aways? I wish I would have discovered it earlier
TA What you have and do can vary as long as you're focusing on proficiency!
TA: I'm going cross-eyed I'm so tired. is worth it. Got some Questions on which to reflect and ideas to process.
Better late than never! We're happy you were here with us, no matter when!
Great ! Thanks - you didn't disappoint!
I think we need a for the organizationally challenged
start grading assessments with proficiency based rubrics. Make novice& intermediate prof. a part of daily convo
Thanks so much to our fab latest mod for leading tonite's
A4 We'll automatically use our beliefs. Just need to make sure we keep evaluating and refining them with help of community
Gotta go! Merci Mille fois Mme Farab! C'est fantastique!
