What do you use on your phone? I'm looking to up the GIF/meme game ...
Checking in from East Los Angeles
Sorry, just heard it, stuck in head... (:
A1: If my parents education was good enough, then I'd be out of a job! We’re preparing for different skillsets.
A1 if we teach todays Ss the way we taught yesterday we rob them of tomorrow
I know! Going to be epic. I am so excited =)
we'll try to keep it extra exciting for our East Coasters!
q2: false! today's kids need less memorization of facts and more analysis/application of concepts
That is such a great way to describe her...nice
A1: Is your parent’s car safe enough for your kids? Is it possible your kid would be fine? Sure, but don’t you want them to excel?
Hooray! Glad to have you here, Steph! We'll both be yawning by the end! ;)
A1: knowledge is a commodity
google. seriously i just google keep words and add meme or gif to it.
A1. that was then, this is now. we no longer have a 1 room school house. We have many rooms now.
We are all =) Love my pals!
A1 The world is changing SO incredibly fast! Education has to keep up. We have to stay relevant. https://t.co/tPUheozcj2
A1:My response: What generation do we live in? What world are we preparing our students for? https://t.co/60e7HgR34J
Great to see you again Hilary. Missed you today.
A:1 my parents/gparents education will not give my kids the skills they need to succeed in this global, 21st Century economy.
A1: Key phrase is "good enough." That's rubbish: aim for the stars instead!
Awesome! Thanks Mark! Hoping the procrastination won't hurt too bad ...
A1: The world is much faster now, and the avenues in which we learn are endless.
Hi Shea! Thanks for the goodies yesterday. I need to take pics to all the peeps can be jelly!
. A1: Rotary dial telephones used to be good enough, too. But technology & design changed that.
A1: Elements are...wonder, curiosity, innovation...
hmmm, this is and I approve this message
Kelly is the MASTER of memes. is the master of GIFs. So much awesome here in
lol that's what i was thinking! grad work can wait!
One of my FAVORITE sayings! Well done Mackenzie! https://t.co/f3Ckxq4Rge
A1 if we teach todays Ss the way we taught yesterday we rob them of tomorrow
Thanks, Kelly! I haven't made it for awhile! Soooo fun to be here!!
A1: we will see more changes in 10 years, then they would have seen in 100. Moore's Law.
you’re welcome! I’ll be seeing soon to deliver her badge!
Ack! I almost forgot. Mark Loundy
Instructional technology specialist and K-5 maker space chief in Silicon Valley
and would you want the same medical treatment your parents and grandparents received? Hmmm - didn't think so!
Right!
Before: Routine, non-analytical work.
Today/Tomorrow: Non-routine, critical thinking.
https://t.co/lz51wfl5Dy
q2: false! today's kids need less memorization of facts and more analysis/application of concepts
Oh good...glad I'm not the only one!
A1: So what is your real response to parents who say this to you? . Is it possible to get them to see the possibilities?
My learning here feeds into my grad work. Win, win.
A1: This is oldie but goodie, just replace GW w/Q1, in sense changing jobs demands new skills https://t.co/NhP9F7oAsd
Wow ... that's pretty easy!
This is a beautiful meme. CTRL +F saves my life all the time.
A1: Society changes, so schools need to change to reflect the changing needs? Do we still need Blockbuster employees?
I'm not sure my kid's current education is going to prepare them enough. Yikes! ?
EXACTLY! https://t.co/yB3sdBwaKz
and would you want the same medical treatment your parents and grandparents received? Hmmm - didn't think so!
Thanks for the reminder. Didn’t order during the day. Got caught in a mtg. Ordering at 9:00 I guess. https://t.co/APYkf5DhAV
Hello My tweets for next hour will be part of this online chat. Hi all, I'm Ryan a Tech TOSA from Rocklin CA
A1: Don't think so... need to be responsive and reflective to changes
I know. It's important that we also take on the load as parents to help prepare them.
Cleanr version of my response, but similar point (:
A1: they are aspects and foundational skills that are worth keeping but it needs to incorporate 21st Cen tools
Awwwwwwww yeah! Ryan is here! https://t.co/mswiAKiNLn
Hello My tweets for next hour will be part of this online chat. Hi all, I'm Ryan a Tech TOSA from Rocklin CA
A1: Or...Oh, we ditched textbooks along time ago. :)
Hey ! Sorry to skip but it's bedtime for this Minnesota gal!
Very very unfortunate. We’re robbing our students of THEIR future when we keep them in OUR past.
A1: Society changes, so schools need to change to reflect the changing needs. Do we still need Blockbuster employees?
Goodnight! We will catch you up with the curation!
WELCOME Ryan! Missed you this weekend!
A1 what education looks like today...from a parent POV https://t.co/91uSxZiTAo I wrote it last year. Not a whole lot has changed.
A1 what education looks like today...from a parent POV https://t.co/fV8hjubse8 I wrote it last year. Not a whole lot has changed.
Great to see you again Ryan. Great to have met you in person a few weeks back too.
A1: Overall I'd say no. Evolution of thought, idea and creativity. These lead to innovation & changing the status quo
A1: If our children are not taught w/vision toward tomorrow, they will live in yesterday, unable to make progress toward future.
Cynthia from San Diego - late to the party
Isn’t learning Morse Code and smoke signals enough any more?!?!
The problem: Education is slow to evolve.
The silver lining: Our classrooms are nimble to evolve.
We have the advantage.
See you on Voxer. Sleep well, Andrea.
Can you imagine requiring Ss to use encyclopedias like I used to use? Kids are fascinated when I tell them about encyclopedias.
PS...finally got my copy of and can't put it down!! Just the reinspiration I needed!
Love this. We don't have to wait for "them" to do what we know is right now.
Hey Ryan glad to have you here
Or phones that had to stay NEXT to the wall. Crazy talk!
a2: incorporating integrated subject matter, problem based learning, collaboration
A2: Education needs to change to prepare students for the world they will live in, not necessarily the world we live/lived in.
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful to hear Amanda!
Thinking the same today. My daughter's in 1st gr. Long way 2 go still but seeing worksheets scares me
Fashionably late, Cynthia... Perfect timing ;)
I did not see you pop-in :) https://t.co/SSpipX730p
Can you imagine requiring Ss to use encyclopedias like I used to use? Kids are fascinated when I tell them about encyclopedias.
my 6yo asked why we say hang up the phone. had to explain that one! what about card catalogs?!
Definitely love the emphasis on STEAM. EDU needs more integration.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh it is SUCH an awesome book right? I'm such a Fangirl! https://t.co/xwfQk74hZ9
PS...finally got my copy of and can't put it down!! Just the reinspiration I needed!
A2: Ed must reflect the workplace. Ss need to focus on searching out and constructing knowledge, not regurgitating facts.
I love this it reminds me of and the this weekend! https://t.co/crxy6pYPPx
The problem: Education is slow to evolve.
The silver lining: Our classrooms are nimble to evolve.
We have the advantage.
The Martian did show the benefit of knowing about hexadecimals though! https://t.co/42IBTRp9iq
Isn’t learning Morse Code and smoke signals enough any more?!?!
A2 i'd love state tests to be based on finding the answer then memorizing using skills they need as adults show me what u know
A2 More collaboration and more sharing. Wish what we have here on Twitter was the norm in education.
A2: Simple answer is let our Ss lead. Ss have passions & interests that are steps towards their future. Let’s truly be S-centered.
had a student ask me what "throw away cameras' were
A2: Our most important job is not to teach content, but to teach students to learn & embrace natural curiosity.
I know. We have a lot of work to do but I DO see it changing!
A1 If it was, then Makerspaces would be where we sent non-academic kids and forgot about them.
Totally! I love talking with them about how far things have come since I was a kid!
A2: We need to have more flexible schedules.
A2) Good Q! Ed needs to change by having students CREATE not memorize.
A2: Allowing them to pursue their passions & see that tech is a gateway to collaborating and clawing to get them
i hate the # of worksheets is see come home w/ my kiddo.
A2: lean startup, fail fast, assess for learning, reflection, deep not wide, Soc&Emo skills,
actually that one was an A2 as well....grade chasing vs innovating meh
Or film. Ahhhh now I feel old!
Coach Ben jumping in late!! I'm an edtech TOSA from Salinas! What up all!! Excited for w/
Appease Darwin, let's make sure our adaptations evolve us to more complexity, and not an evltnry dedend https://t.co/DcddEAQSJ0
The problem: Education is slow to evolve.
The silver lining: Our classrooms are nimble to evolve.
We have the advantage.
This message needs to be shared with ALL educators! https://t.co/1gmjG74iiI
The problem: Education is slow to evolve.
The silver lining: Our classrooms are nimble to evolve.
We have the advantage.
seriously! I can't believe i did a senior research paper using one! in the 90's!
A2: Relevancy: technology + critical thinking + softskills + authenticity
A2: The Minecraft generation wants to craft, make, create.
Q2 Ss and Ts need to celebrate making mistakes AND learning from them!
Glad you could make it Ben!
A2: Schools need to place a focus on Ss being citizens of the digital WORLD, Ss must be versed in both physical and digital skills
Ooh! Tonight’s side game! Outdated expressions! roll up the windows https://t.co/EC62A26jGL
my 6yo asked why we say hang up the phone. had to explain that one! what about card catalogs?!
I do too. We have to continue with a and .
NOW it's a ! https://t.co/fe96BURjqX
Coach Ben jumping in late!! I'm an edtech TOSA from Salinas! What up all!! Excited for w/
A2 Tomorrow’s jobs need critical thinking, creativity, communication, & collaboration. Not enough of that in yesterdays ed system.
Couldn't pass up and the ...even though I'm not a tosa! Maybe someday!
A2: and in this society? Produce, don't consume.
Design engaging learning experiences over lessons. How many of us remember lessons from our childhood? https://t.co/4YHGd2pAAT
A2: Our most important job is not to teach content, but to teach students to learn & embrace natural curiosity.
THIS is a recipe for success, Lisa! https://t.co/WgRljAbQti
A2: Relevancy: technology + critical thinking + softskills + authenticity
A2:To stay relevant, education need to provide more opportunity for Ss to solve problems, think creatively
A2: It's about relativity, purpose, and creativity
A2: I’ve really enjoyed a greater emphasis on design thinking, makerspaces, & STEM EDU. Great for Ss’ futures!
& I were talking abt how kids don't know the film reel image from an ext
Empower Ss to find passions, Ts need to go from gatekeeps to virtual-learning guides, teach real world skills
Flip the role of students from consumers to creators right ??? https://t.co/EGwVHnYyvP
A2: and in this society? Produce, don't consume.
A1 Instead of the progressive superchargers for education they are today.
It might be a Philly thing but outdated expression - "tap the mac"
How about "rewind"? There's nothing to wind anymore!
like pointing at one’s wrist & asking for the time. Analog wristwatches are a relic.
How about a fax machine. Have to admit I used one today. Didn’t work.
A2. Good question. I like all the answers that everyone has put out there today for this answer.
hey, don't those all start with the letter "C"?
Yes, nimble to evolve in a supportive culture! TOSAs can help make this a reality.
A2: Problem solving w/ diverse resources & complex situations; not regurgitating Googleable information.
A2: Giving kids real world tasks to solve that they are interested in and adding a global audience for some pizzazz
lol my co-worker had to use one then snail mail an original. is it 1987?
A2: think of da Vinci; always spent time following his passion and interests. Give Ss more freedom, space, time
Q2 We need to get teachers to buy into a whole new system by which content is consumed, learned and re-mixed by Ss
Less grade-centered and more thinking-centered
Very, very, VERY good point, Michael!
A2: Empower Ss to take ubiquitous info to new levels through creation, collaboration & communication. Use it to solve problems.
A2: Every learning experience needs to have connection-based learning! That’s our Ss’ future.
Is it a bad place to be, that I tell Ts, like I told Ss, my job is to make me obsolete?
Agreed. Learning experiences are memorable. I don't remember any worksheets I completed as a student.
Would somebody retweet Q2? I can't locate it in my stream.
is one of my favorite concepts! https://t.co/x2SpeReIVi
Q2 Ss and Ts need to celebrate making mistakes AND learning from them!
agree we are no longer the holders of the mantle of knowledge
Right on! How do we recreate the eduTwitter culture in our classrooms and at our sites?? https://t.co/lbBb1GihsP
A2 More collaboration and more sharing. Wish what we have here on Twitter was the norm in education.
A:2 Stop teaching tech separate from content. Keyboarding practice. Ack! SBAC prep-NO. Integrate tech & teach the standards
Exactly! If we all were 100% consumers, there would be NO content for anyone. https://t.co/KVQfULT4GT
Flip the role of students from consumers to creators right ??? https://t.co/EGwVHnYyvP
A2: and in this society? Produce, don't consume.
A2: Make meaning and be visible with learning in a fast-paced world. Students as curators.
Oh no, I was looking for a Bronco..
Things are slowly shifting from acquiring knowledge for a test to the application across disciplines/problems.
Yes We can teach Ss to thrive and be autonomous in a 21st Century Classroom & they will experience success https://t.co/4qgA9L7VWX
A2: Our most important job is not to teach content, but to teach students to learn & embrace natural curiosity.
This would make an excellent chat! Haha!
Yes. Shift from teacher directed instruction to student led learning...
YES! We should be working ourselves out of a job! Just heard say this too! https://t.co/WSjCiy8icr
Is it a bad place to be, that I tell Ts, like I told Ss, my job is to make me obsolete?
. Couldn't resist one last tweet!
Hmmmmmm someone should really moderate that one... ;)
Thrilled to have you join https://t.co/aIr3Yt2iwK
Couldn't pass up and the ...even though I'm not a tosa! Maybe someday!
Real world + global ... the kind of education today's technology can deliver! https://t.co/HdmerC938I
A2: Giving kids real world tasks to solve that they are interested in and adding a global audience for some pizzazz
YES! Two VERY great minds!!!
Q2 Our ed system, as rigid as it may seem, can be massaged into something much mr dynamic 4 Ss, that is why we are here, right!?!
Teach STUDENTS!!! Not standards, Not standardized tests. Teach STUDENTS!!!
Yes! The remix part here is key! I think that skill will continue to grow with time. https://t.co/J1fbnr9sbp
Q2 We need to get teachers to buy into a whole new system by which content is consumed, learned and re-mixed by Ss
Not out of a job - just a different job. Ts will always be needed.
Yep, Joe and yourself, absolutely agree. (:
I LOVE that one!! So funny! Now with GAFE we don't even have SAVE!
Yes indeed! When grade-centered, kids will play the "game of school" instead of loving learning. https://t.co/XDCE4h2kf3
Less grade-centered and more thinking-centered
Nicely put Sean!!! https://t.co/XD49fUguuN
Teach STUDENTS!!! Not standards, Not standardized tests. Teach STUDENTS!!!
NO WAY! You're not getting out of this one! YOU AND JOE!!!
Or even one where content is created by students. Wouldn't that be cool https://t.co/YGMg8SGd5d
Q2 We need to get teachers to buy into a whole new system by which content is consumed, learned and re-mixed by Ss
Rachel, instructional coach from Montana. Jumping in late for just a bit tonight!
a3: creative -- it could include the other four!
That is the million-dollar question! https://t.co/lZUyr8Xf0F
Right on! How do we recreate the eduTwitter culture in our classrooms and at our sites?? https://t.co/lbBb1GihsP
A2 More collaboration and more sharing. Wish what we have here on Twitter was the norm in education.
A3: For me the hands-on! If I am not doing I am not learning!
Good to see another enthusiast in the chat, Liz! :)
Yes it would be the BEST! Ss deserve it! https://t.co/tB3SlGUQo2
Or even one where content is created by students. Wouldn't that be cool https://t.co/YGMg8SGd5d
Q2 We need to get teachers to buy into a whole new system by which content is consumed, learned and re-mixed by Ss
Any references to a “broken record”
As we should be trying to work ourselves out of a job =) Yes teachers will always be needed https://t.co/rpjh52ZGLo
Not out of a job - just a different job. Ts will always be needed.
Ascension Technology Resource Teacher - Difficult to get peers to see value of making, creating and learning by doing. Ss love it
Hi everyone...can't stay and play tonight, but wanted to say hi. I'm sorry to be missing out on what is sure to be great convo.
A3: All are important, but I like different, aka differentiated to meet individual needs
Don't we have an entire storify dedicated to this???
A3: each is a part of the puzzle
A3: Creativity, it addresses all the others
That’s it. Learners remember the connections & relationships & how they felt. Let’s do that for our Ss.
A3: DIFFERENT the rest on the acronym can fall underneath this when compared to what teaching has been. See previous Qs
A3: Different. Ss need change and choice. Need to be able to adapt to the world around them.
A3 Use innovation, tech, creativity & hands-on to be DIFFERENT so that we can avoid staying stagnant. https://t.co/fguFvlfmaM
I like innovative. Shows risk-taking and thinking "out of the box"
A3: I firmly believe in hands-on. Ss need to be IN every learning experience. Learn-through-doing.
A:3 I can't choose!! How do you choose!?!!
A3: I think they all stem from creativity.
Agreed! How can we turn tables on what has become less freedom, space, & time for passions in a testing culture?
dang it Karly you stole my answer. as soon as i read yours i knew that's what i was going to say. https://t.co/uyR6XduSLD
A3 Use innovation, tech, creativity & hands-on to be DIFFERENT so that we can avoid staying stagnant. https://t.co/fguFvlfmaM
Yes! Build up the teachers & our colleagues that they are empowered for themselves.
A3: Innovative = problem solving. See a problem, design sol'n, fix the problem, learn by doing.
I love that! Yes we have to differentiate to meet all students' AND all teachers' needs https://t.co/OU2XAPXbL6
A3: All are important, but I like different, aka differentiated to meet individual needs
A3 I think it depends on the type of learner.
Q3 I like Different. Think Different. Be Different.
A3: Being innovative is most important because it can encompass the other elements of DITCH & transcends traditional learning.
So true (: I imagine a day, when I walk down halls, and every T is like, "I got this..."
don't be afraid to give that time to Ss.
More like you two, and everyone else on tonight. :)
A3 tough choice- innovate can lead to differentiate and create and builds persistence and grit both are much needed today
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining
Agree! All of the DITCH pieces are important, but if we keep diff at forefront, S lrng will be vastly improved!
The only time we fail is if we wake up tomorrow the same teacher we woke up today. https://t.co/5EdKFuRpxv
As we should be trying to work ourselves out of a job =) Yes teachers will always be needed https://t.co/rpjh52ZGLo
Not out of a job - just a different job. Ts will always be needed.
Sorry! You can tweet it as yours! Great minds think alike right ? ;)
A3 "Innovative." Implies a readiness to improve and adapt — no matter the form or medium.
Ready, 1...2...3.. Not IT
A3: Maker Bus my colleague & I have been working on touches each of these letters
. I had a fail forward moment today. Failures are best when they are public, so others can learn
A3: Hands-on because it is the mirror opposite of worksheet ed.
Hope you guys are having a great tonight! I am busy celebrating this special girl who turned FOUR today! https://t.co/85AEwMILKI
Sorry I'm late to the partaaayyy!
NO I just want to find it!
I was looking for it but couldn’t find. made it, I think.
I'm seeing lots of "different." I noticed this most when I followed Ss to classes. Everything was the same. They needed variety!
. A3: Creativity. Without creativity, the other tools provide little value.
A3: Hands-on, for sure. That's a sure path to innovation and creativity.
I like hands on, but I like the Ss to put a new twist on things, not just follow a recipe.
I think I forget flexibility if also fundamental
What’s the point of failing in private?!? Public humiliation is an art form! https://t.co/ctivGVrbPP
. I had a fail forward moment today. Failures are best when they are public, so others can learn
As Apple said, "Think Different". This encourages collaboration and celebrates variability of all educators & learners.
that's something I hadn't thought abt. the monotony of school for kids.
A3: Hands-on, like so many others are saying. Learning sticks when we DO.
What a great opportunity to shadow a student.
thanks Matt! Hope to have you come to Richmond soon!
At wkshops, I'll ask how many have learned to do something by YouTube video. Lots of hands. Watch then do https://t.co/sk3f5qX0g7
A3: I firmly believe in hands-on. Ss need to be IN every learning experience. Learn-through-doing.
Same is boring. But consistency is secure and comforting to some. Need happy balance.
Well, you could close your eyes, point, and go with that option.
the best way to cook, with your nose (or in this case your noggin!)
A3 C and I should be coveted but Hands-on, there is something about it when a S gets to touch, feel and engage in learning
My 18yo 2day accepted into honors college at WSU. Promoting Global learners/21stC Ss. I'm excited for her.
A3: I like hands-on... Learn by doing! Experiences make learning memorable
VERY true! I love that STEM is bringing so much hands-on back into the classroom! https://t.co/3VqsnR8Jlt
A3: Hands-on, like so many others are saying. Learning sticks when we DO.
Ahh huge congrats and happy b-day (:
Thanks for reposting this Joe. I need to revisit it!
You're awesome, Ari. Great attitude!! Love that you're willing to share your failures for others' benefit.
WOW! Congrats to her!! That's amazing!
A3: Hard choice... I'd go w/ different also. For differentiation, differing lesson design, dif approaches https://t.co/eG6FUF7JzW
A3: All are important, but I like different, aka differentiated to meet individual needs
the hands-on approach definitely gets my brain going!!
There is it. I have another one too. I’ll find it.
Doesn't have to be pretty. Matt reading your book & blog led me to the .
love it! My little guy just turned 4. Enjoy!
So, little clue of greatness, when you have resource to prove point, & share it,
Good call, I will need to just visit
Would love to! My dad is a Richmond Red Devil alum!
a4: can't keep up with current knowledge
Yes! And the Maker/Tinker movement. It can be hard to make all lrng hands-on. But Making + Tinkering = tactile engmt!
Thx. It was freeing to admit I messed up & so much easier than trying to cover it up.
Shared it w/my TOSA team, we're loving it
A4: Easy text is accessible to most. Predictable format. Cons - Irrelevant. Ss don’t need to know the info, just how to find it.
a4: all Ss have same info, don't need to worry about tech snafus
Well said. Helps visual learners. Videos definitely help bc learning can be accessed at anytime.
A4: Pros-lots of info Cons-limits T creativity & get stuck in turning of TE & assigning content w/out regard for S learning
They were pretty awesome at the time ...
Steal away!! That’s the purpose of PLNs - sharing wheels to avoid re-creation! https://t.co/tWb15jNwHH
Fair warning: I'm going to steal that!!! 😅
A4: Structure of textbooks are comfortable but stifle creativity & innovation. Ts should venture off script with Ss authentically.
So we've kinda been doing that this week...you learn so much
Q3. I think hands-on but I teach math which needs practice, practice, practice. Creativity is a close second.
Yes sir! Its hard to pretend you are bouncing or catching a ball, but to actually do it, best feeling evr https://t.co/eqmXsCaiPx
the hands-on approach definitely gets my brain going!!
Yes... says the deepest learning happens through relationships https://t.co/DbihAf8wM8
That’s it. Learners remember the connections & relationships & how they felt. Let’s do that for our Ss.
A4: Pro: textbooks are relatively easy to use (think cookbook) Con: Not very engaging to most
https://t.co/HAhtKud4sn via
A4) Pro: Textbooks provide resources Con: Don't always fit ur class
A4. GOOD: When I am gone, I can give them work from the book. BAD: it's out of date & a paperweight. Ss hate book work.
And... we must let our Ss try something different.
A3 I hate that innovative is so overused it has lost some of its meaning. I saw it on a package of sour gummy somethings.
Wow! Very cool! I love 's work too.
A4: Pros: Textbooks are resources, can provide outline & timeline for learning. Cons: relying on too much, outdated
A4 Textbooks can be used as one place for students to get info. We have to be purposeful w/ their use. No more be on pg12 @ 9:05am
True story brother-in-law redoing floors through youtube...
A4 txtbks can provide a credible source and should not be completely tossed but used as a starting pt or resoure
That's a side convo (: DM me
A4 Only pro for me: can provide grade or age appropriate text Many times what I find online is way above my 4th graders head.
A4:Textbooks are an outdated, as soon as they are printed, resource like encyclopedias. Digital resources are current
WHAT?? That's crazy. Innovative sourness?
It’s a great article my director of elem ed shared with our TOSA team.
Monotony can be an average teacher's best friend. Becomes more abt management instead of inspiring kids
Just saying you're comfortably at a level I can barely see. I'll get there though
It was a very formative experience for me.
me to, class of...a long time ago. I teach at Seton High School. Earlham College grad.
Me too. I recently learned how to repair a washing machine from YouTube.
Yes. This is very sad but true.
A4: The biggest con is the incredibly rate at how fast info in some textbooks are obsolete.
A4 Tchg from textbooks box in the learner. Ss see only 1 format day in/day out. Context + real-world understanding is lost. Sad.
this is what i'm battling....
Innovative gummies. Say it isn't so! Hitting the thesaurus ...
Textbook pro: Can provide structure, esp for newer Ts.
Con: inflexible, impersonal, static, heavy, out of date ... Shall I go on?
Q4 bks can be outdated and boring don't reach all Ss think differentiation
A4. Textbook Pros: lots of practice (math). Cons: not very real world, examples are contrived
A4: TBs give support to new Ts, they are accessible resource, layout pacing/content as pros...cons...well 140 isn't enough
A4: Out of date, very expensive, and get easily damaged and lost. None of my Ss have lost/left the internet at home yet
Q4 Going off the deep end here, but only a CON. It's an enabler, we need 2 dig into T programs & show resourcefulness
Anyone use the breakout box?
A4: Pro-Easy for newbies to follow Cons-suck the art & human components from the craft of teaching
Yep ... we should keep any resource at our disposal! Ruling any resource out limits us.
I'm gonna be a party pooper. My wife's car needs attention. See you all during the week here and on Voxer.
or complete unit/chapter X by this date.
so bonus question: how does online open source curriculum (i.e.engageny) compare to textbook?
for everyone saying textbooks are cons only -- how do we provide equitable access??
Sure say it all concise and clearly...suppose you are always a winner (:
Q4 Dont get me wrong, I love BOOKS, just not textbooks :-)
But how cool that there are TLs (aka ) with "Innovator" in job title? Didn't see that 5 yrs ago!
Bye Mark! Good luck with the car =)
Oooooooo, I like that...an enabler. Or a crutch. Necessary sometimes but shouldn't be the main resource.
A4: A textbook is another source, tool, but there are so many paths to take beyond it.
Con: They arent Different, Innovative, Tech-laden, Creative or hands-on
Here's the problem with monotony:
Monotony is easy. Easy to prep. Easy to execute.
Different is hard. https://t.co/ffhgQBLzQS
Monotony can be an average teacher's best friend. Becomes more abt management instead of inspiring kids
We live in a digital world, high speed internet is a must & online content= ebooks, … https://t.co/OUABBnesYy
for everyone saying textbooks are cons only -- how do we provide equitable access??
This is my biggest gripe about txtbks. Even online resources can get old. 9yo lecture notes for my online MA : (
AMEN! Textbooks are fine only as a pacing guide/bare bones foundation. Ts must supplement and build off from there.
Awesome nature of - not just reading great books like but talking w/ author at
we have to keep the bks to provide equitable access they shoudn't be the only source
A4: Con: Textbook is stagnate & fixed Pro: Access?
Wow, there are so many levels of awesomeness here, my awesomesauce I had brewing just boiled all over
A4: You might not like the newly adopted textbook so why be chained to it?
okay Lisa you should have intro'd yourself to Ari too! Ari Lisa was in my Communication sesh!
No matter the medium, design for student engagement.
A4: they can become a crutch and disable our own creativity. "
I feel like with everything we just needs to use it purposefully. Some books have great excerpts.
oohh so many awesome tweeps in one tweet had to jump in!!
A4 textbooks? What are those?
The other prob w/monotony:
Battle it with creativity. Creativity takes time.
Sadly, we don't get enough time to win the battle.
A4 They limit & can lead to excuses: "well I did the whole book. What didn't they get it?"
Yes! Student engagement is the special sauce!
I like this statement, engaging activities don't need tech, so many ways to do amazing things https://t.co/nqJEygfAR8
No matter the medium, design for student engagement.
Ari you were my side-kick! you were totally helpful! not weirdo at all!
HA! I saw this and thought the same thing!
A4:Textbook pros=base for us to work from When you teach 3 diff grade lvl in 6 yrs you need 2start w/something Innovate from there
Agree. I think we don't hear it enough in education! And we don't empower our Ss w the freedom it offers.
Does anyone else just get so pumped, excited about how amazing it is to be able to be a T in today's age? Wow it's empwrng
That's what I feel my job as a coach is, to add the creativity, find the additional resources, model Make time for Ts
A5: Love newsela for informational text (current events) at variable Lexile levels
How many of you as a student looked at a textbook and thought, "Awe, man, do we have to read this whole thing?"
A4: Teaching is a chasm, not a tightrope. Textbooks are a great resource for the journey.
A5: Online resources abound. Hangouts with experts, credible sites for content, explore virtual reality, try online simulations.
Yeah, it's like if only there were some books on this topic...oh wait...
HEAR HEAR!!!! https://t.co/GaYoIxcYts
Does anyone else just get so pumped, excited about how amazing it is to be able to be a T in today's age? Wow it's empwrng
Noticed some Ss struggling this year Class is not textbook work, its challenging. I'm breaking the mold https://t.co/bCtiLfoBMJ
Here's the problem with monotony:
Monotony is easy. Easy to prep. Easy to execute.
Different is hard. https://t.co/ffhgQBLzQS
Monotony can be an average teacher's best friend. Becomes more abt management instead of inspiring kids
A5: Youtube, GHO with experts, virtual field trips
Textbooks were not designed for the students you currently have. https://t.co/vX91YF2eOK
A4. GOOD: When I am gone, I can give them work from the book. BAD: it's out of date & a paperweight. Ss hate book work.
Awww! Definitely feel the love!
I agree w/Alice. OERs or textbooks, you can teach boring lessons or engaging ones.
A4: Textbook cons=unengaging and rarely do they tell the whole story Hate the watered down stories in textbks
A4: Textbook cannot compare to Internet as to amount of current, ever increasing content. Teach standards, not curriculum.
A5: Outdoor education is a fantastic way to give students context. Field trips, connecting with experts, …
Ohhh wait for it! Mine is scheduled in like 2 sec!
a5: visits from authentic experts
Just learning about from . Great resource.
I'm really neither, but these folks certainly are always amazing...amazing
Hilary, you’d love this - connection-based learning movement I’ve been a part of. https://t.co/l8kb5KKWWj
a5: visits from authentic experts
Ohhhh Lisa is a great person to learn from!
Text "above heads" = gr8 opportunity for close read though, no? Way 2 stretch the thinking. Engage in higher lvl text.
A4 Textbooks - compare info and see how relevant / accurate the printed word stands up to online info
A5 Love some Google, YouTube (u can learn anything from YouTube), expert chats, tweentribue, newslea, & Google Cardboard!
A5: There are many resources but right now I am loving Google Cultural Institute, the art, history and world wonders
the answer is all the above
A5) I think that resources that go beyond the textbook are best done with Text Sets. Multi-genre, multimodal text sets
A5: Def interested in checking out expedition for Ss to get context.
I thankfully *never* had to teach reading or writing from a textbook. all the way!
Be guided by the scope and sequence of your Ss learning styles, not by the one that's in the textbook.
A5: reallife/reality TV, S interest, S ?'s, curr events, big questions, life lessons, being observant, reading/research/curiosity
Very true. Solutions include authentic student-led learning experiences. , , , …
A5 I'm not sure shy Sal Khan gets a bad rap for Khan Academy, but this is a great resource if harnessed correctly.
. I love expeditions, but I think I'm starting to love the idea of Ss creating their own even more
All from the creativity & imagination from students in Valerie’s class.
Was playing around with Cultural Institute today. Want to find ways for Ts to easily and seamlessly use.
A5: Is GAFE considered a resource...if so I will take a chromebook and an ipad on the side as well
A4: Reliance on textbook can create teachers who are drones, not innovators. Fidelity should be to student learning & standards.
Nope, we are all =) I learn a TON from Lisa and Ben and Jeremiah and Kelly and Joe the list goes on!
Yes, so true! I started teaching at in Jxn Hole. Amazing the power 4 students!
Thank YOU for responding so quickly too. That was such an amazing experience for all.
We do learn better together! Best part of tech is reaching great minded like individuals
Yes! That is definitely the next powerful step.
It's ridiculous to look at a 700-pg book and claim you can cover it all sufficiently. Don't feed the lie! https://t.co/NmqziUduQb
How many of you as a student looked at a textbook and thought, "Awe, man, do we have to read this whole thing?"
Ohhhh looking that up after the chat!
Drones. Last thing we want to be.
Right!??! And why would you want to??
Yes! A little movement does wonders. Especially when the movement is outdoors (rain or shine)
A5: nature, each other, materials, freedom to experiment
A5 Google Bks is another grt resource. Look, our Ss dont all read at the same grade lvl, therefore, we must provide opportunities!
A5: Resources beyond textbks= experiences Novels Primary Source Artifactws
i was always so scared of tearing those tissue thin pages!
A5: Ss are the greatest resource for Ts and they are not always seen that way, let their creativity/interest drive and discover
A5: Also took a look at tour builder and Google lit trips. Tons of great things. Can you tell I'm working on level 2 cert?
The connecting and collaborating is really the best part. For me & I think for Ss https://t.co/KShvh9ZO8F
We do learn better together! Best part of tech is reaching great minded like individuals
These are some tasty resources!!
https://t.co/vxga2iqq2F
A5: Resources beyond textbks= experiences Novels Primary Source Artifactws
Exactly! How can a textbook cover something sufficiently when we are learning more everyday?
This works for everyone too. My walks around the building when I’m stressed helps me SOOOO much. https://t.co/TknFsekw7C
That is so true. Get your Ss outside. so many need fresh air, a little walk, and they are ready to learn. https://t.co/u0QEeXCvvD
A5 Experiential, outdoor ed! Here in the Yellowstone area we have lots of resources! Experts, field trips, geologic features.
So true, as Ts we benefit so Ss benefit, as Ss, now public audience makes authentic work
My favorite tweet ALL NIGHT!!!! (I even yelled the hashtag with all caps ...) https://t.co/B7JPDSnare
Be guided by the scope and sequence of your Ss learning styles, not by the one that's in the textbook.
RESOURCES are all just ingredients. The STRATEGIES are how they are all cooked together. many ways to combine them
BAM! You win the best hashtag award! Well at least in my own silly little hashtag award game... https://t.co/lIzZFoUPt1
Your making me hungry!! Hungry for some teaching!!! https://t.co/SJpBF0G5VD

A6:Model. PD should reflect DITCH techniques. How many times do you go to a lecture where the T said, I shouldn’t be lecturing but
A6: Make our PD Ditched out as well!!
Aw, LUCKY! I wish I was there.
A6: Use the edcamp model for PD: self-directed PD. Model what we want for Ts w Ss when we coach & conduct PD.
Ooh, that is a great resource! I also love
A6: More showing, less telling.
Amazing place. Lots of races come spring/summer... :)
THIS! THIS! THIS!
https://t.co/FIFu8rtxjb
Be guided by the scope and sequence of your Ss learning styles, not by the one that's in the textbook.

A6: How about for teachers?
a6: tosas vs traditional pd!
LOVE this Jessica! can you write a book called "DITCH that PD"???

exactly! Letting them know it's OK & brainstorming strategies and rethinking lessons with them. https://t.co/lBvj0OVfih
A6:Model. PD should reflect DITCH techniques. How many times do you go to a lecture where the T said, I shouldn’t be lecturing but
Yes! Love it and hope that we are all spreading this love! Great Point! https://t.co/NMKuVgEl5z
Does anyone else just get so pumped, excited about how amazing it is to be able to be a T in today's age? Wow it's empwrng
Yes, edcamp model. Ss can't understand why I get so excited about learning something new. I've got to create that in them!
Thanks for the chat! Need to sign off!
This is an amazing example of true connections based learning!
Ah, yes, I've been meaning to check that out, too.
thanks for joining us tonight!
A5: I'm looking into for VR field trips and walkthroughs. Let my Ss experience what it's like to be there.
A5: Newsela, Epic app for primary, pbslearningmedia, YouTube, californiaeei...
A6: Best way to get thru to a teacher: results

A6: Started our first out-of-box PD today...Book Club w/mix of F2F and Voxer interactions!
That’s the 20% time concept we’ve talked about before.
A6: Drive PD by T need/interest and then provide TIME for them to CREATE vs consume.
A6: DITCH our Ts by understanding where each is coming from. Shape strengths & style with tech to create engaging lessons. Model!
A6 We lead by example, extend the olive branch and make sure that the T know we are in it together (Be part salesman + MOM).
Not too bad. Actually pretty interesting and tons of resources. I'll let you know tomorrow after test.
Our kiddos LOVE . Imagine researching space by actually FLYING through space!
Yes. Our district has been leaning that way and it has been so beneficial to so many Ts.
Sounds great, Joe! W/out knowing much abt , I'd say this is what drew me to teaching initially.
Me too. I’ve also used meditation & mindfulness exercises before a test & the SBAC.
I'll get started right after ... ;) https://t.co/CyL1hHrtut
LOVE this Jessica! can you write a book called "DITCH that PD"???
A6: listening, leaning in, doing whatever it takes, help solve problems.
Thanks Ben! Glad you were here!
For a second, I was excited for a new TP label. I'd say that's a stretch for word use!
I'm sure you would have a ton of collaborators.
A6, work as if we are working for that day which has not come and beleive in that day, in which we must strive to be ready for
A5:resources outside the textbook includes each other through collaboration

Thx for a great chat! Had a blast with the crew! indeed!!
6A . Many Elective Ts, need to work slow, many don't understand technology, don't want to change their teaching, patience & love.
Learn my best stuff from colleagues!
Good luck with that, Sean!
