Question 1 on the way. Tonight we are thinking about engagement and summer for our learners and ourselves
Your puppy is so cute Mindy
Hiya Lindsay! Good to see you!
Hi! I'm Kimberly, I live in Canada but work in Michigan. Favorite summer activity is spending time at our summer cottage in Quebec
I have been doing it for 12 summers. Can't beat sitting on a clay floor that someone made 4000 years ago.
He is pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself!
Good to see you too! Your pooch is adorable! Happy to be joining tonight!
Q1: Do you think students stop learning over the summer?
A1 Learning takes place ALL THE TIME, but we could make it better!!!
Melissa Kreger, MI. Summer means marathon training, reading (professional and fun) and family time.
A1: The brain NEVER stops learning! But “school” learning is definitely different than “informal” (and summer) learning.
A1: "Academic" learning may slow, but learning never stops.
A1: No one ever stops learning. Summer is for unstructured learning.
A1: Absolutely not! Kids learn from experiences, engaging in & following their passions. Less formal opportunities though.
Q2: What should students do over the summer?
A2: Do we ever stop creating new neuropathways? Summer is for exploring more emotional/ self guided experiential learning.
Be sure to follow the new folks you meet tonight on the for example I just followed my new friend
A1: Ss learn dif. in the summer. They focus on their soc-emotional health, learn on the job & through new experiences.
A1 question. We all seem to agree that learning never stops. But do we know how to honor organic summer learning?
A1: We need to help our learners keep their “school” learning muscles in shape over the summer, too.
A2: Students with the love of learning will not slow down. They will use summer for hands on fun
Q2: Read a book, take a breath, sleep, play outside, take a walk, focus on personal reflection.
A2: Ss should learn about their passions over the summer. Ts too.
Q1: Learning never stops! Summer is opportunity for Ss to maximize on learning relaxing and observing w/in moments of each day
I like to think summer learning is experiential. More motivating and engaging for most.
A2: kids should play, experience, read & see application of learning. Best math w/my son was giving a budget for farmers market
A2: Play. Read. Explore. Play. Experiment. Examine. Play. Move. Listen. Play.
A2: Read, read, read, explore nature, get outside, invent games, do a little math and write!
Q2.1: Do educators have a responsibility to help inspire summer learning?
A2: Ss should learn to just BE. Connect w/ self as learners through--follow interests--learn to carry over into school year.
I like that! and "how can you use this new knowledge to support your learning journey at school?" https://t.co/oklBi42HYT
Ts always ask, "What did you DO over summer". Let's ask, "What did you learn/ love?"
I think we can plan lessons/units/assignments that harnesses - but often demos gap between have & have not
A2.1: Eds set the stage for summer learning. Families and community connections are the next step to build that lrng bridge.
A2: Do things they love, try something new, read, be a good friend, clean their room.
A1.2. Definitely can inspire summer learning & support Ss with limited resources in locating resources to support summer learning.
, great to connect in real-time with you!
That's an important point. For some of our Ss the summer can be learned negativity/trauma. https://t.co/s8OlaoW2XY
I think we can plan lessons/units/assignments that harnesses - but often demos gap between have & have not
A2: I just wrote a summer activity book based on stories of our community & opportunities to explore & apply what Ss have lrnd
Q3: How do you promote emotional engagement during out of school time for students in the margins?
A2: I think Ts should try to inspire and influence constructive summer learning for Ss. Use Remind to share out mini-challenge
Listen and est. a real relationship; Keep listening and learning; Honor contributions of time and skill
A:3 Give them your true attention and always have high expectations and be sure to listen.
I'm thinking about how I would define emotional engagement. Then wondering if it needs to be between school/home
:-) https://t.co/h1acz3drOf
A2 Ss need time to play, be creative, use their imagination & delve into their passion. What makes them tick? Learn about themselves#UDLchat
Looks like we were thinking the same thing.
A3: Twitter helps me quite a bit. I can like, follow and rt their interests, and talk to them about it the next day. Plus, public.
A3: One idea: work with comm stakeholders to ID engaging summer activities. Share w/Ss and fam.
A3: Especially challenging for late teen/adult learners. Summers are for jobs to pay for school for many. Emotional investment?
That means I'm in great company, !!
A3: Give them purpose. Opportunities to have an impact on the life of someone else. Build on what they are interested in.
A3: Providing opportunities for Ss to connect w/self as learner. Optimize a strengths-based focus to motivate
A3: Community support including the Church and service organizations.
A3: personal relationships & helping Ss find their passion; supporting access to things outside of school.
A3: Model summer learning w/Ss through GroupMe. Talk about where to get resources.
I wonder if we need to "teach" these skills before summer? https://t.co/VRmZjgB0BL
A3: Providing opportunities for Ss to connect w/self as learner. Optimize a strengths-based focus to motivate
I love the piece about the impact they can have. It's all bigger than all of us
Time for the last Q already!
Q4: Do you have plans for UDL learning this summer?
Expert learners are lifelong learners. So we should be teaching these skills all the time, right?
yes, it's about providing opportunities to raise awareness-takes time-but Ss latch on very quickly--simply amazing
A3: responses have me thinking about how to use goal setting with Ss for end of year/summer planning.
A4: Review all my Diigo bookmarks. Participate in
Agreed! it seems so common sense...it should be the natural way--consistently--no questions asked.
A4: Absolutely! Like everyone said early on learners are lifelong learners. Especially all of us tonight.
A4: Read a few books, participate in some online learning through , connect with other practitioners.
A4: ALWAYS UDL learning going on! Here in US and abroad.
A4: Is the chat going to continue over the summer? Because that would be my plan :)
Schools might post a summer volunteer board like a summer jobs board.
Yes we are still ting this summer https://t.co/nXoA5r6YVY
A4: Is the chat going to continue over the summer? Because that would be my plan :)
But it will only be complete if I get to see in person...
I have lots of UDL summer learning! Still reviewing resources with colleagues from ! PD planning will have me learning too!

A4: Always room for choice in curriculum, but I hope to focus on and new book. Plus, an groupie

A3 No matter where a S lives, they need an outlet. A safe haven for creativity to take place & people that will genuinely support
You're officially in charge of keeping me informed
I get to see you !!! That rocks!!
A2Ss need time to play, be creative, use their imagination & delve into their passion. What makes them tick? Learn about themselves
