#edsg Archive
The #edsg hashtag is used by stakeholders who want to share information with educators in Singapore. But there is a faithful group that tunes in every fortnight on Sundays, 9 to 10pm Tuesday, 9 to 10pm (Singapore time, UTC+8) for topical chats. We provide unPD, which is informal and unsanctioned professional development (PD) for educators. Such PD is free and self-organizing, but no less valuable than official PD. We promote progressive education and evaluation by practicing connected learning, critical thinking, and community building.

Another fortnight, another chat. Who's in? What do you have to share or ask?
Good evening . It has been two weeks in sch and yes, I am still much alive. lol
Proposed qn: How do u create an open (sourced) culture in the classroom?
What is the current culture?
more collaborative and self directed than before, though is open source culture any different from that?
Sadly, that's not saying much. ;)
One can be collab or SD in both open & closed systems, don't you think?
I'm guessing your question has more to do with changing mindsets of what resources & behav are acceptable.
Open source culture is about sharing. I remb asking something in some linux forum and there would be answers from others
engrg1 Is the effort for one class, a level, a cluster?
When there is question I can answer, I pay it forward and answer other questions too.
Is having an "open" classroom just about the resources?
I am doing that for p6 class . For P4 and P5, it is the whole level.
Cool! Which subjects for P4 & 5? Or is it project-based? Something else?
Gosh, 2016 is starting as the year of the bot-generated tweet spam in . Remember to report or block strategically.
it is part of ICT Training to teach the kids to blog. Hopefully, the tchrs could continue with that after training ended.
Do you think the mainstream classroom or staffroom will ever reach that state of openness? Should it?
Found this vid, to watch later: New culture of learning: Hanging out, messing around and geeking out https://t.co/LN4uKtXN6D
Glad to hear you are back safe and sound. Hope you had the chance to explore. Did you?
and also putting that down in the IPW project My first time trying and see what comes out of it

It feels like the one has to be less stiff and more informal when approaching edu with an "open" mind.
All using the same blog platform as the one you demonstrated earlier? Other options?
I have to choose kidblog as it is more manageable for the teachers. It is actually powered by wordpress (1/2)
Are mainstream teachers here ready to limber up? What keeps the rigidity in?
I try to cut down the administrative work for tchrs and set up all the accounts for the pupils
I get a sense that openness is perceived more a threat than an opportunity. Why is that?
i think it's more of merging the what-works and what's-new, and finding the right balance.
And sometimes, the teachers are more likely to be more "open" than the students when approaching new ideas haha. sometimes
I see. What if trying to find that balance isn't a workable strategy?
this is one of the most simple system that I can find so far
Was this the one you mentioned that prevented the pasting of HTML from ImageCodr?
it is not impossible but it will take time. Need more of SL, MM and tchrs with that type of vision
yup. But , I just need to insert the flickr URL and the citation will occur if I mouse over the pic.
Is it just a matter of time though? Schooling changes so slowly. What catalysts might we introduce?
i doubt there will b a consensus on what works, per se. Interpretation of results vary, esp when it's not based on grades
Excellent! How long were you there? What else did you learn by rubbing shoulders with international counterparts?
Studies on change tend to show that piecemeal change tends to be ineffective. Accommodative efforts are piecemeal.
Does the same effect appear in mobile devices? I haven't tried.
Such attribution is less obvious, don't you think? Pros, cons.
that is why I am gettin gthe pupils to put in the source below. No app but works well on mobile too
true, but what i'm saying is bite-sized efforts is maybe not so much ineffective, but inefficient. And takes a long time
In your exploration of possible blog tools, did you find any that made CC attribution easier?
Make sure tchr plate is not overflowing so that there is time to be open
That's certainly one catalyst. Rethinking what curriculum is and providing more space and time.
kidblog so far seems to be the only one which offers some form of CC attribution (although not obvious)
How about looking at it this way: The inefficiency adds up so that the effort is ineffective? No concerted effort.
Looks like a good choice then. The effort looks conference presentation-worthy too!
would open-sourcing be a major step in the right direction then?
Do you think school systems "punish" teachers for trying to innovate (even tho there's a push to innovate)?
invented in 2002 in hope of changing the world. 2030 is deadline for Qingdao declaration https://t.co/JDCu4SsYmt
Excellent! How long were you there? What else did you learn by rubbing shoulders with international counterparts?
It makes less sense from a financial or commercial point of view in our system. 1/2
Had a long chat with Filipino educator on Fri and CC as well as open source efforts make a lot of sense there.
Had a long chat with Filipino educator on Fri and CC as well as open source efforts make a lot of sense there. 2/2
All that said, $ is not the only concern. The open, sharing, and attributibe mindset is what is valuable to all.
hmmmm i wouldn't say punish but fear of the unknown would make middle managers hold you back
And those values are very impt
15 more min to 10pm, have to take a break then, cos Liverpool are play Man Utd WOOT go Klopp!
What might be unknown? Alternative methods, resources? Impact of using, changing? Other?
Indeed. And a rich system like ours is very selfish if we are not more giving.
In particular, paragraphs 6 & 7 deal with OER and open access journals. A 15-year effort.
despite the varied constraints, our teachers r more than capable of quenching our student's thirst for knowledge
"punish" . What "punish" when you can'e be even bothered abt system? lol.
I don't doubt we can provide for our own. Openness also means providing beyond what's immediately obvious.
Do we model such behaviours & put into action such values enough so that our kids do the same for others?
So if there is no fear or concern, what is the worry? Or is it a lack of a systemic view?
Yes, that is the hope. Changing mindsets of ready-made answers is tough, but i can see that changing
Even though there are only a few monkeys in the barrel, we've flung a fair bit of stuff around! ;)
the inertia to stay status quo? "It has always been that way" mentality
How often is that said now, in your circles and in your opinion?
I like that title "Contancy of Purpose"
Alright guys, going off now, getting my Liverpool scarf ready for the big match!
We've hit our time for the fortnightly sync chat. Feel free to join the async chat in between!
quite a fair bit , and that probably explains why we are still in schooling stage
Is there any way to 1) thread conversations & 2) edit resources?
Sad to hear that. I find that % varies a lot in other places. Naysayers 50% or less.
or is it a matter of too much on teachers plate? Focus on quality rather than quantity
Full plate juggling has been the mainstay. Bigger issue might be lacking initial buy in & subsequent ownership.
impact on results, parental complaints, projected student misdemeanors etc
eg when I explained using todaysmeet the response was not how cool it was to have feedback but how students may be distracted
and my take is innovation is only pushed in small doses - like one lesson...Paradigm shifts are not understood and thus feared
think practitioners must work hard to gain trust of the boss with conventional work before being allowed innovative work
If it is that small a dose, is it really innovation? If you take one chemo session, does that cure cancer?
The problem with that is if you do well conventionally, why change? You provide gun & ammo. ;)
exactly right... It's kinda done to show that innovation is happening since it's being pushed my the top
Yeah, but it captures only what happened 9-10pm.
oh I don't think that's a case of innovation in small doses.... That's a big success story for Sg innovation we need more of
Wasn't referring to that as small dose but as one to give perception that it came from top. Open source is ground-up.
that's seminal paper, read it yrs ago&it provided inspiration for the new curriculum I designed for sec students
How recent is this model? The theoretical constructs are behind the times. ;)
many colleagues and bosses are not cutting edge so this model has worked for me to gain leeway to try more new things =)
It looks like an attempt to recreate Puentedura's SAMR model.
haha yes I did enjoy this lol we humans really like to "chicken little" ourselves
Thanks! I've changed the start/end time. Can the resources be edited, eg, remove bots, name resources?
Am messing about with the resources now. Have discovered how to remove trash. Thanks!
