#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Welcome to the #personalizedPD chat.
Thank you, for joining @jbretzmann
me and we kick off the start of the summer chats.
Our moderator tonight is Heidi Carr, @carr_8
Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book and chat. https://t.co/UKHXahxKzN
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
A1: To me navigation isn't as clear. In the real world we sometimes recognizes dangers more easily than online. That needs to be the first step. #personalizedPD
A1: The difference is that you are explicitly teaching rules and behavior for the digital world. You are applying what students know about appropriate behavior for real life and extending it to how they act digitally. @harryhanna#educ502#personalizedpd
A1) If we teach someone to be an explemenary (spell check) citizen, they will be so in all facets. If we only teach digital, they will only be that way online. #personalizedPD
That's part of my job, actually, and my principals have made it clear that it will be a focus next year. No more giving a student a device so a teacher can check email! #PersonalizedPD
A1 Teaching students digital citizenship comes down to empowering them to enact their values in the digital context. They need specific examples to help them visualize their behaviors, but ultimately itโs about discovering and doing what matters. #personalizedPD
A1: Permanence. Digital citizenship adds an extra layer of importance. Aplogies and changed behavior may change your outcome in some situations, but the delete button will not permanently erase your mistakes in the digital world. #PersonalizedPD
A1: It is important to show students that "real life" and the digital world have a connection, and our actions should be consistent and appropriate, even if we cannot directly see the people we might be affecting. @harryhanna#educ502#personalizedpd
Stories such as Each Kindness can be connected to digital contexts as well as physical, so students are constantly seeing the imaginary line between IRL and online fade away. #personalizedPD
A2: We can ask questions about their learning, help them to dig deeper, guide them, and let them determine how to show you what they know! #personalizedPD
A1: Both require to be a good https://t.co/EiS6T0SLFN person or online. Learning at early years that words have power in person or online #personalizedPD
Make figuring who you are as a learner a prominent activity in class. Allow Ss to to spend time investigating what works for them and how to drive their own education, in class. #personalizedPD
A2) We can and should learn our students interests. The more we can relate their interests to the curriculum and society the more they will want to be engaged. #personalizedPD
A2. Be supportive of Sโs choice through encouragement, resource, and modeling deep thinking/reflection. Provide guidance, not the path to take. #personalizedPD
Teach them empathy and draw out their natural instincts to care for one another and allow them to have tough discussions about bully, on the playground and the chat room, as you guide with questions. #personalizedPD
A2 Be an advocate of student voice and choice. When students are empowered learners, they own their learning and are more likely to retain and apply the knowledge. #PersonalizedPD
A2 We can give projects that leave room for student choice, and then help them choose what matters to themโas opposed to what seems easiest or is of passing interest. #personalizedPD
A2: This yr I am going to be using menus and having my Ss document which "standards" they want to cover and when. This shld allow for more open-ended responses. #personalizedPD

According to Marzano teachers provide choice to students in four ways: (1) choice of tasks, (2) choice of reporting formats, (3) choice of learning goals, and (4) choice of behavior #personalizedPD
A3: We would let our children ride a bike out alone without first showing them HOW to navigate the world safely. To me that's what Dig Cit is. #personalizedPD
A3 Anytime a device is in the hands of a child, digital citizenship needs to be taught. Whether it's a formal lesson, or reminders, it needs to be there. #PersonalizedPD
Standardized test are made up of our standards so if we teach our standards, our learners will do just find our the "test." We can drive our Ss interests to meet our content standards. #personalizedPD
A3) Part of California's CCSS is technology and digital citizenship. But beyond that, we should teach and reinforce a positive citzenship all the time. #personalizedPD
Integrating digital Citizenship is important because students often don't have the same empathy for people digitally as they do when dealing with people in person. They don't connect that their comments are going to a person โน๏ธ #personalizedPD
A3: Amy from Cincy - Iโve been looking through the chat tonight and had to respond to this one! Digital citizenship is everywhere! It will impact many facets of our studentsโ lives in the future and we want to make sure they are digitally aware! #PersonalizedPD
A3 Anytime a device is in the hands of a child, digital citizenship needs to be taught. Whether it's a formal lesson, or reminders, it needs to be there. #PersonalizedPD
A3 The digital world is neither good nor bad, but how students relate to their digital world can move them toward or away from their values. Letโs teach them how to choose. #personalizedPD
Most toddlers don't automatically realize this either. But is we are consistent in our expectations across spheres of interaction I believe they will grow to be responsible and empathetic. Let's turn that frown upside down. #Hope :) #personalizedPD
A3: Our devices can be more dangerous than our cars however, we teach our Ss how to drive and be safe on the roads. We need to teach our Ss how to be safe online. #personalizedPD
A4 It is so important that they realized what is put out there, stays out there. Employers look at social media presence when you apply for positions. I would want mine to be a positive footprint. #PersonalizedPD
Excellent point! A good way to model that reflection is to give Ss feedback surveys - shows you are focused on growing as an educator and that you value their feedback as a essential component of that growth #personalizedPD
A4: Just like any other skill we are charged to teach our Ss about, we need to be just as interntional, if not more so, with technology because it is so much more far-reaching than our own classroom and community. It is world-wide. #personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
If you are having doubts about joining it, take the risk!
Join in, or not, it's cool.
A4 I think it's really important for students to realize they can learn and make connections with others online. If we model those relationships using Skype, Google Hangouts and Flipgrid collaboratively they will see the benefits #personalizedPD
A4: I think we need to model for our Ss how social media can be beneficial for us as well as show them what happens when others misuse social medai. #personalizedPD
A4 We can help them clarify their values, discover how social media moves them toward and away from their values, and cue themselves to choose behaviors that move them towards their values. #personalizedPD

A4: I think kids should see social media as a powerful way to shape their future! There are so many networking opportunities through Facebook, Twitter, instagram, etc. if we can teach them to use the tool wisely it can definitely take them places! #PersonalizedPD

I completely agree. I think we can add some intentional understanding (in discussion) of what the differences are with connections F2F vs. Online to help them see value in each. #personalizedpd
A4: I think we need to help Ss reflect on their social media use more frequently. Is it a positive force in my life? Is it actually making me more connected or making me feel more isolated. #personalizedpd
Just saw this discussion.
A3) Because digital citizenship is part of the modern form of citizenship. Education should include the ability to navigate the world the students live in, and #DigCit is a huge part of it. #PersonalizedPD
A5) Presence to know their worth to the world, to be able to differentiate between good and questionable material, the presence of mind to turn off a device and walk away for a while. #personalizedPD

A5:I feel like,by the time they graduate from high school, they should have the type of online presence that THEY are comfortable with.We have a 28-year old daughter who only has email and instagram, because she wants to be more intentional about her relationships. #personalizedPD
A4: I think we need to help Ss reflect on their social media use more frequently. Is it a positive force in my life? Is it actually making me more connected or making me feel more isolated. #personalizedpd
A4) Model its use for learning. You can't teach what you don't do. Participate in chats like these and have students join, and even run one. Model building a network to #UseTech4Good. #PersonalizedPD
Appropriate. Those red solo cups donโt look good to colleges. The internet is forever - those bad photos or mean/vile comments will hang around and can cause problems for education and employment. Just follow the problems ppl are having in the news. #personalizedPD
A5 I hope my students have an online presence that promotes safety, creativity, compassion toward themselves and others, and social justice. #personalizedPD
A5: A confident presence, but also one of self-compassion, flexibility, & patience. We cannot do it all, be it all, or know it all at all times, even though "online" sometimes leads us to feel as if we should. #personalizedPD
A5: I think our Ss need to have a positive presence as well as some type of digital portfolio/resume. They should understnd how to network online. #personalizedPD
A5: A confident presence, but also one of self-compassion, flexibility, & patience. We cannot do it all, be it all, or know it all at all times, even though "online" sometimes leads us to feel as if we should. #personalizedPD
A5 I ask my ELLs to stay in touch with my current Ss using @Flipgrid. They let my Ss know how they are using English in their careers and every day lives. Keeps them connected and in touch. #personalizedPD
A5: Instead teaching my students not to post pics of themselves drunk and cursing, I would hope to guide them away from those behaviors for a deeper reason than college entrance or employment opportunities. We should try to live lives we can share online. #personalizedPD
A5) A portfolio representing who they are. It needn't be all accomplishments and certainly can be much more than academics. But anything positive they're engaged in shows higher ed and employers their positive influence and their ability to navigate online spaces. #PersonalizedPD
A6: I think it's important for us to discuss that content. That whole "If we see it online, then it must be true." cannot be allowed to permeate our Ss minds. Good questioning a research skills will hel Ss determine what is good content. #personalizedPD
A4: I think kids should see social media as a powerful way to shape their future! There are so many networking opportunities through Facebook, Twitter, instagram, etc. if we can teach them to use the tool wisely it can definitely take them places! #PersonalizedPD

A6 We have to teach our students to verify info by checking multiple sources, teach the Ss how to question the info, and how to trust their gut feelings. Same skills we use in our daily lives. #personalizedPD
A6: I think this is a specific skill that must be taught. Kids need to learn to check multiple sources to decide for themselves the truth in what they read. #PersonalizedPD
A6 We have to discuss, model and allow them to participate with social media in a supportive environment. TEach them the pro's and con's of social media, keep it real #personalizedPD
A6. They need to see multiple perspectives on a topic. See the whole picture. Only choosing โyourโ view will reinforce one perspective. Growth and decision making canโt happen #personalizedPD
A6 We have to discuss, model and allow them to participate with social media in a supportive environment. TEach them the pro's and con's of social media, keep it real #personalizedPD
A6) Integrate #MediaLiteracy in all types of literacy, online and off, even including textbooks. Discuss motives and purposes behind different forms of communication. Online, focus on sourcing and different levels of reliability. #PersonalizedPD
I like the idea of a pro and con list! You could even create a "what goals am I using social media to accomplish list and be disciplined about reflecting on whether or not they are being met #personalizedPD
A4: I just showed our graduating seniors how to use social media (LinkedIn and Twitter) to start researching about future careers and build a network. We see the power of having a network. Share that power with our Ss. #personalizedPD
A7 My schools are using Be Internet Awesome next year. We might have to adapt some lessons for the K-2 crowd, but I'm looking forward to using it! #PersonalizedPD
A7 @Flipgrid and @SkypeClassroom are two of my favorites. Great opportunities with teacher controlled safe guards available to keep students safe. #personalizedPD
A7a: In PreK we have iPad apps. we do interactive activities on the SmartBoard, too. We do have an Osmo, but only 1, and there aren't many apps or materials for it. #personalizedPD
A7b: I want to explore coding with my littles, but the tools we need are expensive and if I have it, then it's not fair to the other classes...#personalizedPD
It's the free curriculum from Google for digital citizenship! There's a game more for secondary, but we're just using the lessons in elementary. #PersonalizedPD
I would explore coding and bring in other classes for your students to mentor. I would also check out CS-First and https://t.co/99GsT7qwYB (FREE resources for coding) #personalizedPD
We use #googlemeEDU where my students google themselves to see what others will find. Then we try to fill the google box with all the awesome. Create and share! #personalizedPD

Awesome chats tonight #PersonalizedPD#CultureEd but if I don't quit now, this will be me in the morning when my 4 year old tries to wake me up too early!
