Hello #k12artchat fam! Happy to be with you all tonight after being away for too long! Grad school has been taking loads of my time 😬 Taylor Beam here from @MerkelHS - grades 9-12 art educator!
A1: My high school art teacher inspired me to be an Art Educator. She not only helped me grow as an artist, but also as an individual! She helped me gain the confidence to pursue a degree in Art Education. #K12ArtChat
A1: SO many amazing people! My HS art teacher changed my life - but the main one has to be my mom - teacher, professor & advocate for education. She is my main source for wisdom & insight! She has always modeled what it means to be a thoughtful educator! #k12artchat@NAEA
K-5Art Teacher from Grain Valley,MO! A1 I had a wonderful Elem. Art Teacher, but had a not so positive experience in Art from 6-11th grade. Looking back,I know those years inspired me to encourage creativity with students and build relationships with kids! @k12artchat#K12ArtChat
A1: My art teachers were/are the coolest women ever! They loved their jobs and were so passionate! I love their positive energy!... And still keep in touch through social media. #K12ArtChat
A1: my high school ceramics teacher. She constantly encouraged me in this direction, and after not listening first semester of freshman year I switched majors and never looked back. #grateful#K12ArtChat
A2 I LOVE when the kids surprise and WOW me with their learning & excitement while creating! Color mixing today & problem solving was a true example of how excited our students get while making creative decisions. Seeing their reactions and proud faces are everything! #k12artchat
A2: my favorite thing about my job is the students. Seeing them find something inside of them they didn’t know they had - creativity and confidence! #k12artchat@naea
I love to see students find their passion for communicating through art. The moment of amazement when they impress themselves and find pure joy/magic in art making is priceless! #a2#K12ArtChat
But then my 5th Gr. Teacher was the son of Erma Bombeck, Andy Bombeck. He taught the pirate philosophy, having classroom pets, not to mention long hair! #K12ArtChat
A2 my favorite part of my job is seeing kids who struggle with academics become rock stars in the Art Room. I love seeing their sense of pride in an artwork #K12ArtChat#pesdragonspln
A2: Teaching with #interdisciplinary techniques. Seeing self discovery take place. Coaching/teaching much more than is within the 4 walls- life lessons. Helping with the college/career path. Learning from my students. #K12ArtChat
A1: I didn't like school but I loved art and I loved helping people.... my mom inspired me she was an amazing teacher (economics and gov't) I saw her change lives! #K12ArtChat
A1- I was inspired to be an Art Teacher by ‘The Lack of’ from My HS Art Teacher. We did nothing! She had us trace, work in packets, paint sunsets & only make clay coil pots. We never took trips or did projects of importance. #K12ArtChat I KNEW I could do better for my students
I am currently a college sophomore. I have not yet began my career as an art educator, but I am completing observation hours for a class. My favorite thing about my observation experience is watching the students get excited to learn a new art technique. #K12ArtChat
A1: my mom wanted to be an art teacher when she was younger she taught me the value of art and how it is an essential part of who we are! Would not be here without her. #K12ArtChat
A3: I think the greatest moment in my career is when a student shared that art became a safe place for them in trials. It gave them a voice, a platform to process, & tools needed to heal. I would say that’s worth all the hours of work. #k12artchat
A2: Getting to build relationships with Ss and families @ When I taught at the Elem. lvl. Now @ the Middle lvl, helping Ss to look past the surface and gain more confidence. #K12ArtChat
A3 Greatest moment thus far has been finding my “home” at the school I currently teach at. The kiddos, teachers, and admin are all so supportive and always do what’s best for kids. My team is outstanding. ❤️ #specialssquad#k12artchat
A3: I love the moments that are unexpected. The Ss that struggle but when they get it, itmakes your heart soar! Love when artists take risks and are wowed by themselves! My fav so far this yesr is a tough kid who has told me art is his favorite specials! ❤️ #K12ArtChat
A3: when a 5th grade mom sent me a message that her son who never really saw himself as an artist felt good about his art in my classroom. I love helping my students find the artist within. #K12ArtChat
A3: Deciding to follow my passion. I was pre-med and determined to be a Doctor but what I thought about was how I’m going paint my office or makes arts help heal... I realized I have to honor my innate need to create and share it with others #K12ArtChat
A1: I am currently a college sophomore. I have not yet began my career as an art educator, but I am completing observation hours for a class. My favorite thing about my observation experience is watching the students get excited to learn a new art technique. #K12ArtChat
A3: Career wise being named HS Art Educator of the yr for my previous county and being named Teacher of the yr. Having my peers recognize that what we do is important and relovent and that I did it well was special to me. #K12ArtChat
A2- What I like THE MOST about being an Art Teacher is the change I see in the students I have, who have trouble staying motivated in other classes, because I’ve ‘reached them’ thru an engaging project, such as throwing on the wheel, changing their outlook on school #K12ArtChat
A4 Not sure how to answer this one in one tweet🤣 The hilarious kid stories, the things I catch myself saying to students🤦🏽♀️, singing&dancing, my team dressing up in ridiculously silly outfits, the pranks, & the conversations between everyone. It’s always a good time! #k12artchat
A1: Throughout my college experience, I have had many great professors share their personal insight with me. My observation experience has been very helpful and eye-opening! I have realized some of my own strengths and weaknesses and found ways to overcome them! #K12ArtChat
A4: teaching middle school knowing not to say balls but spheres when referring to the ⚽️🏀🏐⚾️🎾I had for them to draw. Yeah. So my boys lost it and chaos commenced. 🤣😂🤣#K12ArtChat
A great moment in the classroom is when students find inner pride & self motivation. Survival sometimes in any teaching position is celebrating the little successful moments each day- #a3. #K12ArtChat
A4: funniest moment would be being known as the art Miss Frizzle...a huge compliment but it cracks me up that’s how the kids AND faculty see me #K12ArtChat
A4: Oh waaaayy too many! We laugh so hard every day! I keep a quote wall every year of funny sayings. Plus I fall down alot so that helps too. #k12artchat
A4: How do I share all of these stories in one tweet?! Anything from student's wild ideas & jokes to my own ridiculousness - falling out of chairs, making a fool of myself while introducing a new media or concept - we laugh every single day! #k12artchat
A4 idk if this is the FUNNIEST, but today I had to tell kids that Uber no longer services our classroom bc they would “call and Uber” and a friend would push their chair around the room so they didn’t have to get up. Sometimes you just gotta laugh 😂 #K12ArtChat@k12artchat
A1: During my observational experience today, a student and I were loading the kiln together for the first time. We were both very nervous to mess anything up and had a few good laughs over our worried reactions. #K12ArtChat
Funniest moment- kids staring at a Warhol soup can poster with intensity to turn to me in frustration & say “I cant see anything in this magic eye poster!” #K12ArtChat#a4 (i have tons of funny moments- a sense of humor is a requirement in middle school)
A5: Looking forward I using my voice to create positive change in the arts Ed world, to get higher ups to realize the importance of the arts and having a lasting impact #K12ArtChat
A3 attending the Robert Rauschenberg Power of Art workshop! The lab school rolled out the red carpet and made us feel so special and valued! #K12ArtChat
A3: Not funniest, but Greatest. Had 2 Ss getting ready for College came back to Elem. school one is going into Art Therapy, the other remembers me saying to always carry a sketchbook. (Never know when inspiration will strike!( #K12ArtChat
A5: I look forward to continual reflection, process and growth! Just LIKE what I ask of my students. Each day is an opportunity to respond and improve! The more I reflect & grow, the better the experience is for my students #k12artchat
A1: I look forward to building positive relationships with my future students and inspiring them the same way my art teacher once inspired me! I have created a few lessons plans that I am excited to implement in my future classroom to engage and excite my students! #K12ArtChat
A5- Continuing to explore new materials and work on more in depth projects. As a classroom teacher I want a better balance types of art. #prekLOVESpaint#painteverywhere#K12ArtChat
A4: I think there is something hilarious going on all the time so it makes my day awesome! Today a kinder said No joke! When it turns out yellow+ blue DOES make green! I guess he thought I made that up! #K12ArtChat
A3- Its tough to pinpoint ‘the greatest moment in my career’ because just having the Privilege to work with kids on daily basis is great within itself. Great moments happen Every Day for me! Like this day below when students teach what they learned, from me, to others #K12ArtChat
A3: Best moment...was the day 1 of implementing a choice-based approach. Following in TAB “footsteps” has been wonderful, but the first day I saw the excitement, joy, and work ethic of the kids, I was absolutely hooked. #k12artchat
A5 I can’t wait to see my first group of KinderCats grow up! I’m also looking forward to see how the art ed world evolves! Can’t wait to gain more experience in the classroom and add some new tools to my tool belt👍🏻#k12artchat
A5: I’m only in year 6 of teaching, so there is a lot ahead...but I can’t wait to run into a MUCH older version of a kid to see who they have become! #K12artchat
A6: I like this PLN- I don’t always make it but I make sure to review later. Ideas, support and the feeling of not being the only one who thinks with an artist brain. #K12ArtChat
A6: I have met SO many amazing educators here, learned SO much about art education, myself, and my Ss,and have had a great time being a life long learner!#K12ArtChat
A6- It helps me feel less like the crazy teacher for handing over art supplies! It also expands my perspective/knowledge of what "teaching art" really means. #K12ArtChat
A6 The art teacher Instagram community has been a game changer for me. I screenshot things and make lists of things daily. The support and amount of resources are incredible to look up to as a 4th year teacher... still learning here! #k12artchat
A6: This PLN challenges me to think from a variety of perspectives, they encourage me and inspire me all which helps the teachers and students I have the privilege to work with #K12ArtChat#pisdcreatesart
A6: this online community has been such a gift! I’ve been able to connect with art educators from all over - share ideas, collaborate, and be encouraged! It has made me better! Speaking of...who is headed to @TXarted@TAEAconference OR @NAEA in Boston?! #k12artchat
A6: I love following all the teachers and being inspired by lessons, great ideas, funny moments, and so much more. Not to mention #naea face to face time and being a part of a national tribe! #k12artchat
As the lone art teacher in a school-a supportive PLN is a way to connect to other passionate educators and not feel alone. We can ask questions, help others and our students benefit! #K12ArtChat#a6#strongertogether listen & be heard
Hey #k12artchat I wanted us to think about these things....because whenever the hard days come....we need to hold on to this "goodness"!!! I hope you feel encouraged! I hope you know you are supported! AND YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
A1: This is one of my first experiences with communicating with an online educator community. This experience has honestly made me even more excited for my future career! I especially enjoyed the funniest moments and favorite things. I can't wait to collaborate more! #K12ArtChat
A5- As I progress in my career, I look forward to Continuing to Grow the Art Program, no matter where I may be #K12ArtChat adding more and more opportunities for my students to experience can Only happen If I CONTINUE to Grow and Advocate for them.
A6: I’m a newbie to Twitter in general, but I’m so grateful to have found my #PLN. It is exactly what I desperately needed as an educator, and didn’t even realize it. Also, y’all are awesome. #k12artchat
A3: When a fellow teacher came in and asked how to do something. Instead of answering, I let the students answer. They were the experts and they did a fantastic job. Their sense of pride, accomplishment, and self worth was through the roof after that! #K12artchat
A6- By having myself follow a Huge amount of teachers & by Having a Huge Following on Twitter, I have been able Grow My PLN, & I’ve been able to Showcase my students work & My Unique Out of the Box Projects #K12ArtChat feedback, praise & others Wanting to Try my projects
Q1: Sister Marie, my high school art teacher. She was an amazing working artist and a kind, brilliant, patient, and creative teacher. I practice and teach her strategies 30 years later. She was an incredible and inspiring person. #k12artchat
Q2: The kids - no question! I love my students and look forward to seeing their faces every day. They’re smart, funny, creative, and give me as much as I give them. Teaching is my second career and it’s the best decision I ever made - mostly because of them! #k12artchat
