Not that is not worthy but don't forget about good nachos too!
-
Welcome to ! We are so excited about the topic - Physical Movement & Free Play in Learning. Let's Play! https://t.co/9e8ASBex5e
-
We should have a special word like "integrate" every time someone uses it in the we all have to stand up and sit down.
-
-
-
. Good night everyone, Andrea from Regina, Fr Imm. LRT on Mat leave currently
-
can't wait to hear all of your ideas for getting our students out of their seats! Jenna, from Chitek, Modified Grade 7 teacher
-
-
Time to get people, joining in from to share and learn. Maybe ask questions and offer fewer remarks.
-
I now know how to troll by integrating that word tonight!
-
Hello ! I am a 4th yr Arts Ed student and pre service teacher at the U of R. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream!
-
-
-
Hi, I'm a edtech coach n , I work half the div, & nothing beats a good French vanilla, except maybe coffee flavour.
-
Good evening everyone! Michelle, principal from Estevan joining in tonight.
-
Hi y'all Brea from Regina currently a student looking to teach internationally and favourite ice cream is oreos
-
Hi all! I'm Emma, a future middle yrs & yoga teacher. I love the topic for this evening. Movement & learning go hand-in-hand!
-
-
Hi everyone, I'm Curtis, 4th year Pre-T from UofR. Sadly I am lactose intolerant.
-
Hey all, Pat (Diddy) from Spritwood. I do things that I think improve the education system. Hmm, I love orange from the milkyway
-
A1. Physical play and movement are important for learning for retention and health. Appealing to all styles of learners.
-
It's that sort of night apparently. I just finished a slice of Dairy Queen cake.
-
-
A1 Much research backs up the benefits of physical movement and play in learning.
-
I'm going to be craving ice cream cake for weeks now...
-
-
Okay, wants to know, is the Grad 7 class modified, or the teacher? :)
-
Missed the ice cream memo ... I like candy cane or coffee
-
A1: I found that sts learned better through games and movement. They don't know they are learning until it's too late! ha.
-
A1 To explore and learn by doing! Especially for the kinesthetic learners as well.
-
-
A1. Physical activity helps Ss reinforce what they are learning. Esp. experiential learning.
-
-
A1 Play & movement are significant for child development. Not only for physically maturation, but movement allows for learning
-
there must be some awful soya product available for you.
-
Jessica Irvine. Core French teacher in Regina joining.
-
One of my favorite quotes to my teachers... plus or minus 2...then change it up.
-
Hi all. Lindsay here! A K teacher in Regina.
-
A1. Play allows Ss to explore ideas in a non-threatening way. Opens them to learning without realizing it!
-
-
-
A1: Studies show PM benefits learning and success for students. Important to get the brain juice flowing with brain breaks.
-
-
Hi - Ian from Prince Albert here. Favourite ice cream is probably Tiger Tiger.
-
-
Incorporating game-like activities and physical movmt can be motivating as well!
-
Hey Everyone! Derek Wasyliw super excited to be chatting about this topic all the way in Australia today!
-
-
-
Favourite sherbet flavour? wants to know! :)
-
I love when I sucker the Ss into learning, esp. when they are the difficult ones!
-
-
A1 games and movement make the day more fun to teach as well. Teachers need to play too.
-
-
I agree. If Sts are actively moving then they are actively learning!
-
-
A1: I'll answer w/ quote: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw
-
A1: Blood flow. Staying awake. Oxygen to the brain. All good things for learning
-
A2. INTEGRATE opportunities in the classroom that require STEM and challenge questions. Make them ungoogleable.
-
. my favourite ice cream is an oreo cookie dough blizzard, but I prefer cake
-
I love seeing their face once they realize they actually learnt something that they feel will better their life!
-
Chad; 18 yrs + in MYrs from The Burn. A1: Engages kin learner, wakes up brain, FUN!!!
-
I love that Sts can explore through movement. In similar, Sts should be able to learn this way too.
-
-
-
Q1 For all minds but prob esp for young minds physical breaks enhance mental learning. Give me time to find references
-
A2 Incorporate brain breaks into lessons-dance, yoga, exercise... S receive the many health benefits AND are refocussed to learn
-
Best response to "You're making me feel smart." "Nah, making you feel the way you are and can be."
-
A2 Make sure kids get recess/lunch breaks, not catching up on work. Phys-ed important. Movement breaks in class.
-
-
A2 quality DPA is reliant on Ts believing in its importance. If you think DPA will benefit your Ss, then it will be meaningful
-
A I always try to incorp movement naturally into my lessons whether it's math or ELA
-
A2. I see many of the teachers at my school incorporating movement breaks like Go Noodle and dance parties. One idea.
-
Get Sts to experiment new ways of learning through movement! https://t.co/X75RvLG5Lb
-
-
A1. Physical activity helps Ss reinforce what they are learning. Esp. experiential learning.
-
Lolery, 3rd yr. Educ. student/Nipawin and I love oreo cookie flavoured ice cream.
-
Glad you're here, Just don't mention the weather to , if you want to return! :)
-
what's your favourite teaching strategy for movement in ELA?
-
Esp. important to NEVER take away breaks as punishment. Even we admit we needs break, how much more so the young
-
A2: It's hard. Over 400 kids at Lee & 1 gym. I'm starting a 2 mornings/wk "learn to run" club in March to encourage more "play"
-
Thanks, I'm taking a chance to get caught up on some things I've been waiting to work on...
-
A2: Allow students to have significant time at recess/lunch to get moving and incorporate brain breaks into lessons
-
This is a good point. I think active engagement comes with movement very nicely.
-
A2: Had a director who said that PE shouldn't be sports, it should be activity and fitness. Interesting, if controversial, idea.
-
-
Yes, agreed! Too often kids get punished and we take away the thing they need the most-activity and fresh air.
-
I generally boot the disrupters and distracted out for a recess , they need it
-
Brain breaks are wonderful! Have you tried Swiggle Stories?
-
It is, I hate "quiet" classrooms. They are suspicious to me, I don't think I can even learn quietly.
-
-
I'd agree with him. I think we assume that comes with sports when it really doesn't!
-
. Have not! Will have to check it out. You are Middle Years right?
-
Which are Ss more likely to continue throughout their lives? OTOH, which R Ss likely to hate if forced to do in class?
-
"Googleable" should be a common pedagogical term now! :)
-
The same things that keep us sane for 5 minutes a day is the same thing they need for 45 a day to stay sane!
-
I prefer a louder & moving classroom any day! This is proof that Sts are awake & actively engaging w/ what they learn.
-
-
Very aware of this when I have kids in the office.I choose a different playground rather than take it away.
-
How does one balance this w/ habitual delinquent work and workers?
-
Well, not always, there is such a thing a controlled chaos. ;-)
-
it should be and it should be something we “avoid” as much as possible!
-
A3. Free play is important to learn so that S's learn creativity and problem solving. Even my own children are not good at it
-
A3: Adults&kids all focus better with breaks. Even look at teachers stuck in a staff meeting - we get antsy too.
-
A3: Sts should have the opp. to have control over part of their day! We tell them where to go, sit & when to eat. Let them play!
-
A2 1st off, brain breaks. Set a timer to remind yourself to do them. Ask your Sts to come up with ideas or share their own
-
A3 This reminds me of Makerspaces and genius hour, free play allows students to learn in an organic way.
-
I'd say that habitual ones typically have some other underlying issue that needs to be resolved.
-
There should be other moments to get them caught up, while others do a fun anchor perhaps.
-
Mine mostly have parent support so that helps. Try to take care of it at different times.
-
sweet idea, do they take pictures of things in your classroom? Or do you let them travel the school?
-
Fair Qs Part of his point; who plays badmntn or bball or (mostly) vball after grad? But many join a gym Worth cnsdrng
-
- Movement and physical activity is essential for learning - that’s why stand-up desks are becoming popular in business!
-
it seems it all ties in together
-
A3: Lets Ss explore. Ties right into inquiry-based learning.
-
A3. Free play INTEGRATES time for exploration of topics that interest them. Gives a boost to creativity and logical thinking.
-
That is true, other times.
-
as education should...naturally ;)
-
but “deep work” does entail some essence of quiet - deep concentration on a subject/topic
-
A2 Create before & after school programs that incorporate varieties of movement. Especially for Sts that do not do sports.
-
I've done both. Usually my students have responded well with this.
-
I've had one or two fall asleep in my class, but they needed it. Sometimes they are grateful for a little rest.
-
-
A3 When I am in the kindergarten classroom, I really think they have it right. So much movement, play and learning.
-
I saw a stand up desk w/ a moveable bar at the bottom so students could tap or move w/out disturbing others.
-
interesting to point out that free play creates time for exploration when so many Ts have difficulty finding time.
-
Absolutely. But when attempting to learn a new topic I need to move, to express, to talk out loud.
-
A3:
Yes! Students must have opp to think creatively and problem solve
https://t.co/qkZ7vML96Q
-
-
A3: Lets Ss explore. Ties right into inquiry-based learning.
-
I get pushback when I try that in a staff meeting :/
-
Promoting a lifestyle of healthy activity probably more important than teaching specific sports' skills for more Ss.
-
funny thing - was using a standup desk for Ss years ago - it allowed Ss to move which was essential for learning!
-
I think Ss need to be exposed to everything. They have opp. to play X-Curr. sports, limited on other games
-
Yes! In that case where Sts need quiet, I would get them there. Perhaps, meditation or a quiet brain break.
-
-
yes standing desks are great for movers, a bit expensive so limited though...
-
A3)Studies show that by adding FP we become more socially active,it boosts our confidence&provides an opportunity to meet people
-
That's why you need to sit in the back...
-
this might be a way to reorder the way we think about scheduling classes, subject vs. activity, what's more important?
-
when I try to understand math problems if I can explain it to a friend or family member I know I got it!
-
That’s still structured time and kids are losing touch with free play.
-
-
A3)The vigor and motivation that exercise/free play brings helps us/our students establish and maintain social connections.
-
agreed. My kids seem to struggle with imagination and creating original ideas.
-
A4: Ties in w/ my A2. I'm starting "run/walk" club. 2 am's a week - start 1st thing w/ positive clear brains&encourage fitness.
-
A4. Though we are talking about free play, I think in some cases we might actually need to model play to today's S's.
-
A4. Rely less on the day to day schedule, be open for a flexible schedule that is not rigorous and fixed.
-
I just lift the legs, add extensions and “presto” standup desk. My custodian was a great help
-
A4 Create "play" spaces within the classroom. Use them as brain breaks or incorporate into asns!
-
Absolutely, I think we describe that as mastery =)
-
that should continue but just get more 'advanced' with time
-
I call a quiet brain break 3:30 dismissal;-)
-
Movement can be used in classroom in simple ways such moving from one group to next. Any excuse to get them up and moving.
-
Have you seen rocking chair? I got use one in gr 12 I was the kid constantly rocking, still do to this day
-
There are just times they need adaptable patterns to follow. Synthesis is hard.
-
A4. restrictions on scheduling need to be relaxed. A subject including free play and learning doesn't fit into a block of time
-
Q4)Implement physical literacy programs, incorporate physical activity into ALL subj. areas&visa versa. Cross Curricular Learning
-
I do too - draw and talk through it but for others distracting - need to watch so pendulum doesn’t take others out
-
Well, when we schedule by topic we tend to lose a lot of cross-curricular "activity" as well!
-
I really buy into this. All students need dynamic seating options. "sit still" is unrealistic.
-
yes I use them all the time for my students since I am an LRT, also thera bands to kick at, extra breaks etc
-
physical literacy programs? Do tell! What does that look like?
-
make the work meaningful and engaging - that takes care of delinquent work & workers
-
Absolutely, so it's a matter of making spaces available for those that need to learn that way.
-
-
I'm much less strict about keeping students in their seats than when I started teaching
-
engage the mind and the heart in the work - link purpose to mission to action for Ss
-
Q4)Less focus on "sports" more focus on physical literacy,TGFU,TPSR & finding joy in the journey of becoming physically literate
-
We can give them ideas and guidance to learn from
-
Well, I am trying to INTEGRATE as much INTEGRATION into this as possible. Lets INTEGRATE into this!
-
A4: Give the sts an opportunity to play. Intramurals, extra curricular activities, morning/after lunch breaks.
-
We are lucky we have lots of diff seating in every classroom.Rocking chairs are one of them.
-
all great mindfulness techniques that help SS focus - but not all Ss want to take part
-
We often overlook our kin. learners. Need to focus as much attention on them as our visual and audio Ss.
-
-
Def! I'm a noisy room w/ group work often but stds learning&engaged. I love group work. Some think it's chaos.
-
-
A bit sad in 2016 Ts even have to model how to play:( Imagine this gen in 19th C! Where’d we be.
-
Yes, but too often it stops instead of getting more advanced.
-
[bounce] [bounce] [bounce]
-
yes/no. Need to develop habits to be able to work in different situations - develop rituals for deep work.
-
-
the French immersion grade 1/2 curriculum is great for this since it's by theme. K and pre k too.
-
A5: Brain Breaks, movement activities to get Ss out of their desks interacting with other Ss.
-
Take natural breaks in desk work to move, change the view, do yoga, breathe, laugh, dance, play pass the shoe
-
oh wait, was this our buzz word? I forgot the buzz word.
-
I wish our schedule allowed a run/walk for 30 minutes for whole school every morning before class started.
-
-
if your forced to sit still you might resort to tapping. This can be distracting to others, which is better?
-
A3 I'm so behind... Exploration & self-discovery is key!
-
True, but sometimes coping techniques need to be taught as well. I'm ADHD and people hate that I have "clicky pens"
-
-
-
-
Exactly!I feel stressed @ times trying to cater to ME needs, instead of Ss learning group needs.
-
A4 Model examples for Sts. Invite them to play - encourage the behaviour.
-
A5 My kids love competition so we play vocabulary games that involve movement.A good game of can get quite physical.
-
Sigh, I'll add it to my list. =) Currently I think it's about 4 months before I can get to it.
-
Almost had a principal convinced of 1/2 hr activity time every morn. Until he realized no more PE. :)
-
thinking back to my childhood, if I had that extra 30 minutes I might have actually learned to cartwheel...nope
-
one student couldn't sit still would much rather stand and do his work!
-
me too - plus other “issues” - it’s a lifetime journey that makes us stronger and more adaptable - gives us insights
-
A5: W/ teaching Core French, I use games, group work, & vocab treasure hunts. Learning w/ movement as much as I can.
-
You are so awesome! So many great things to share and you are so open with sharing.
-
A5 Integrate movement only where it fits. You cannot force movement & play in every aspect. Although, you can always try to!
-
A5 Providing choice for students. Let S share ideas of what they would like to do
-
When I was at the "special school" as a child, we walked every morning. So relaxing and great to start.
-
A5: If I get antsy I usually have sts stand up w/ me and stretch. Allow to move around the room when it is appropriate as well
-
sometimes but sometimes they don’t know what to choose - they have no experiences.
-
<3 thank you for sharing!
-
I think creativity is very important. Sts have to discover what creativity means to them
-
So now we need introspection to be incorporated into how our students learn to cope daily.
-
we try to go for 20 minutes a day. very hard. I like Dance breaks
-
for some - choice causes stress - they have limited experiences.
-
Plus or minus 2 minutes from a child's age. That is how long they can sit and listen. Then it is time to change it up.
-
what made you so special? *rolls eyes*
-
Tackle St needs alongside your own!
-
Acronym guideline: TGFU=Teaching games for understanding,TPSR=Teaching personal social responsibility, FP=Free Play
-
Give them limited choices? The illusion of choice. ;-)
-
We didn't have tvs in all rooms,a tablet&cell&computer in hand. We had to "play"-we were lucky.
-
A5 have kids sing their answer, air write, sit under the desks and read for 10 minutes, have LA in the gym
-
it can work - I guess I was just too emotional immature until someone else decided to help me
-
Just means good conversations are happening!
-
Yes, it does have to work naturally, but there are many ways to sneak it in there.
-
Never said it was the good connotation of special ;-)
-
Exactly! Have we DI’d & catered to the kids to the point of needing to DI’ing play too?!
-
is awesome. If I don't use for a unit or 2, kids are begging for me to use it again.
-
True, and in all honesty I was shy & didn't actually like playing, good that I had no choice!
-
and if we DI play, does that turn play into a sport?
-
I just spent a lot of time in the hallway and the office. You get time to fidget then….
-
Interesting! Thanks for pointing that out to me.
-
Q5: students naturally move w/ centers & We use our bodies to spell words, make patterns & skip count w/different body movements
-
Q6. How can a teacher hack their classroom to give students physical breaks they need while they learn? https://t.co/suvoJAR8ke
-
I think Ss would love sitting under the desks to read! Change of environment and somewhat a brain break as well
-
So did I... Before the "special school"... ;-)
-
we all do but sometimes the support they need is beyond our help - need to recognize that too
-
-
-
Can only motivate so long until it has to become S’s choice for self-motivated,then it’s success.
-
Stand-up desks are only necessary if a St needs one. Standing desks are not for everyone.
-
our smartboard went down for a couple weeks which left us with , sts were not impressed!
-
I mean model to avoid conflict. Grounders (not my favourite game) at recess etc.
-
Woah Woah there rebel! Not all desks are the spawn of Satan. ;-)
-
I was 10 minutes behind a bit a ago.
-
True. We do the best we can in the situations we're given.
-
absolutely - it’s that pendulum idea - when it swings we sometimes take out people with it. No silver bullet
-
I love to use centers students are constantly moving around and if each center is diff. it keeps everyone engaged
-
A6)Brain boosters, walk&talks, alternative environments/play structures) physical activity reward if completed work by end ofclass
-
poll- move to corners of the room, matching vocab word on each other's backs, use a timer move to the next table.
-
A6: When behaviour issues begin some Ss just need to walk. Important to use brain breaks, throw on a movement video, dance party
-
yep - and sometimes the best thing we can do is to let others in and listen to their guidance
-
Exactly! Assist Sts until they find that point. Teaching is facilitating.
-
Same same. The behaviour that I often exhibit makes me crazy when my students do it. :)
-
A6. Seating options, fidgets, bean bags, T's that are ok with S moving while they are talking. Adaptations for all.
-
during individual reading sts could read wherever they wanted to. It really helped them focus!
-
watch it, maybe yours will mysteriously end up in a dumpster all by itself
-
well, being somewhat crazy has helped me in numerous situations!
-
only if we assume that the horse is thirsty. Maybe it has a saddle sore
-
"If I hear you click that pen once more I will break it in half!" - Proceeds to click own pen...
-
A6)I am guilty of hunting down when the gym is free &will always take my class down for 15-20 mins to get some play/learning in!
-
What! Walked! What a novel idea…kids walking to school esp if it’s longer than 6 blocks
-
Hey, we met at FETC 2015! At that Tweet Up in the bar at the place... Good times! :)
-
Maybe every T should do a year of K. Thats where I started and it helped me tons teach gr 2 + 3.
-
I could use a new desk...
-
-
one of our Students lost his whole tooth during that game (not loose, molar I think..)
-
I use them for math & LA - it's an effortless way to incorporate movement & natural breaks in learning
-
I actually enjoy my night walks and used to bike to school, I honestly believe it helped calm my mind for the day.
-
A6: Different seating available, allow movers to move, brain breaks don't force to sit in a desk for long periods of time
-
-
A6 Create play/exploration stations in the classroom, brain break activities, go for a walk https://t.co/7gknfHTzsN
-
-
Q6. How can a teacher hack their classroom to give students physical breaks they need while they learn? https://t.co/suvoJAR8ke
-
-
Being in a Kroom helped me gain perspective of Ss & learning. An amazing experience-even if for a day https://t.co/6HUtudT4Ok
-
-
Maybe every T should do a year of K. Thats where I started and it helped me tons teach gr 2 + 3.
-
My line to student? "Don't make me kill you."
-
which will mysteriously never arrive...
-
-
A6. Create stations of learning, move away from knowledge of the teacher to self based learning.
-
A6 How about student lead brain breaks? Any thoughts on this?
-
DI=Differentiated Instruction; trying to meet the learning needs of each student
-
It is odd at how often I threaten my students to "beat them with a stick" even though I never would...
-
A6) is great for lower grades & allows for fast efficient brain boosts on a daily basis! Also great for indoor recess
-
A7 game-based learning and hands-on activities in middle years can be more structured and have an outcome or goal to meet
-
A7 Games and activity can fit naturally into a middle years classroom with a little creative thinking. Sometimes simple is best.
-
Ah, I could use the exercise. =)
-
. a great way to do brain breaks - give them responsibility for researching different ideas/techniques
-
I think that is a great idea! Many middle years love running our during announcements.
-
Teaching K makes me nervous but I def. agree that as sts get older play should get advanced.
-
Yes, all Sts can learn kinaesthetically even if that is not their strong suit.
-
A6: Implement new moveable furniture for all. Moved all my tables (on wheels) for last 6 weeks&had open floor for Metis dancing.
-
-
A7 student lead brain breaks! Provides students w responsibility, confidence and leadership skills
-
Does brain break insinuate the brain is not engaged when we move? Its completely opposite in fact!
-
you can also have a variety of levels of learning as well, may require deeper thinking. Sts learn to work in groups
-
I often wondered about the stocks of old …. just wondered.
-
And people with a broken leg can walk a marathon, but we'd never force them to do it!
-
-
A6 A timer. When the bell rings. Remind 101. Implement, implement, implement! Make movement habitual.
-
. Brain breaks are useful for all grades. Such a useful tool for all Ss.
-
-
walk to university everyday it's a great way to get my mind focused
-
Simple ways to slide in movement. I try and think of ways to accomplish the goal in a more active way.
-
A7. Maybe it could look like some of the things that primary Ts already do (I used to be a HS math T,am in awe of primary Ts)
-
I tk it's imp to know where things start in school. If we know where they start we have a bett under of where they go
-
A7 does play=games? Play is a basic human drive. As we get older does it equate more to passion?
-
Thanks for the idea! Will have to try it out.
-
A6 continued: The option to easily move my room for a class, a day, a week, etc has been huge change in how I teach.
-
A7. STEM comes to mind first. Engaging in cross-curricular experiments and creation.
-
DI is more than just for materials-we also need to take into account the physical space
-
Great, I like that. Focus the movement on the class or curriculum goals.
-
Hey Does brain break insinuate the brain is not engaged when we move?Completely opposite check it out! https://t.co/5VoQikCAOa
-
Have to slip away early here. Enjoy the rest of your break people... if you had one. Chat next week!
-
University was bad for me because I began driving. Oh how I miss my bike.
-
that's why I like centers-fosters differentiation, collaborative learning, independence & movement
-
. all Ts need to have a better understanding of primary learning.
-
You will not regret it. Easy to use and kids LOVE it.
-
Absolutely! Occupational therapists are my heroes.
-
A7: students lead bran breaks decide when they need them within reason!
-
tried to avoid saying "STEM" all night. I repeat it so often that I sound like one of those green aliens from Toy Story
-
Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate Integrate
-
A3: Unstructured physical activity is fun, allowing children to soar their creativity through socializing
-
Serious Q...I need help - what do you mean be ‘hack the classroom’?
-
That is an awesome idea! Must pursue....
-
-
I completely agree. We learn by doing too. Can explore and learn what we are capable of
-
A7 Incorporating music Sts like for movement, getting Sts to suggest brain breaks, or letting them lead an activity
-
"The claw!!!" STEM is awesome though, and an example of guided play!
-
I like having a 'flexible' classroom. Makes it easier to change things for activities
-
Just helping you lose 5 extra pounds. ;-)
-
-
. sometimes it might but we all need play - it provides opps to move/create/problem solve. Playing is important
-
A2: Through school physical education and sports program ensure students participation. Better health - Better learners.
-
I can't reason to drive to uni since I live close! Bundle up each day and brave the weather. Thankfully it's been nice
-
can we get a definition for "limited" recess?
-
We are never too old to learn and play! Keep moving, playing, exploring https://t.co/rzfMzjHNDr
-
-
A1: I'll answer w/ quote: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” George Bernard Shaw
-
Q8: Ss need that time to play, if it is being limited teachers must integrate it in their schedules.
-
Yes, I have never used it but checked it out. Looks interesting.
-
. play doesn’t alway’s = games. I still play with my kids - games sometimes but also just “play” - make it up!
-
A8. If we are teaching right do we really need recess, or is it already incorporated into the classroom?
-
Maybe a guest visit/hosting in good ‘ol 5-2 from Mr. B!
-
Rural living is what took my bike away.
-
A8 Where is the time going to? If there is less time for recess, then movement & play will be needed much more during class time
-
I agree, but not sure if I equate that to games.
-
only certain activities allowed - all school walking is an example.
-
Popping in for the last 10 minutes of from Mexico just to say hi!
-
I think it's plausible to Bike 60 km to my schools each day...
-
-
A8 I think it is a shame when recess time gets limited. Kids naturally need to move and be active.
-
A8. I do see a lot of conflict on playgrounds so I can see why. Plusses and minuses.
-
are cool. easy, kids love them, and they will track answers
-
what are the reasons? To Increase instructional minutes? Or eliminate Playground conflicts?
-
A7: Group work but this yr we did survey interviewing tchrs. They LOVED it. Moved around school&asked q's in French.Dbl win.
-
Good point. We require recess as a break. If recess is cut, take even more breaks during the day
-
When I see that I think we've failed in teaching some valuable lessons in the classroom!
-
A8 schools killing creativity :( This makes me so sad.
-
Recess can be less organized play then it is directed in the classroom.
-
A8 Im not sure how I feel about this-S need fresh air& time to play &socialize. PM &play must then be used throughout class time
-
Hmm, maybe it's time your school brought back recess?
-
We have altered our lunch hour... 15 minutes recess, 30 minutes eat time and 10 minutes "in motion".
-
A8: Dislike! Where's the time going? Sts need the opp to be able to move around outside get fresh air and play with friends
-
I agree, but when we break down classroom walls and are engaging them at a experiential and free play level
-
Fresh air is a strong point of argument. Sts & Ts need to be outside.
-
What more does recess provide them?
-
we have the "time" for recess but we would need to create a designated "space"
-
-
We went to an altered lunch to eliminate 30 minute recess and it decreased conflicts by about 90%.
-
This depends on needs of school and the community in which the school is located.
-
I can see Ts, especially new Ts not taking time to get active in their new careers.
-
I'd debate that should be part of the classroom as well.
-
Yes. Yes. It’s a combination of many factors. Plus litigation in the US
-
It's been so long since some of yours have had recess, I wonder if they would even know what to do?
-
I need to be active! The Sts are along for the ride.
-
A8: If it works, great! Do it! I know a school that does an end of day recess for middle yrs instead of 2:15 one. They loved it.
-
what do you mean by altered lunch? Where did the extra time go?
-
Chance to take a break, fresh air, direct own activities, and move (hopefully). Hard to go all day without breaks.
-
they would run a gym class... that's what they know. They've lost "play"
-
. many schools have altered ‘recess’ because of conflicts - it’s a challenge knowing Ss need opps to play
-
-
THAT, my furless friend, is an ex. Q. I wonder about unstructured time (which not all recess is) and the social aspect
-
Unstructured free play is necessary2the learning process. Why not have both!?
-
There's some classrooms that don't even have windows. How do Sts and Ts get natural sunlight?
-
True, but not always possible on a daily basis.
-
Mention the weather and die! :)
-
All things that I believe should be incorporated into a classroom, breaks should be on an as need, not scheduled
-
Instead of eat 30/recess 30, we do recess 15, eat 30, 10 in motion activity.
-
. in some cases it’s going to test prep and classes such as Math and English. And to eliminate conflicts
-
We need to let them out into the light sometimes.
-
Maybe play chess and try to beat their teacher? Maybe teachers need to demonstrate for them.
-
you mean those flourescent tubes don't provide me with my necessary vitamins?! :(
-
-
Exactly. Ts have to choose to go outside for lessons if that's the case.
-
My first social activisim? Leading a protest in Grade 5 when our recesses were cut from 15 to 10 minutes.
-
we do a school wide walk 1st thing the morning-this is a school wide goal) the other 3 recess times are play
-
and a lot of gymnasiums...
-
Give them an iPad and find the app “Natural Sunlight for rooms without a view” ;-)
