First, who's here?

George, Humanities and English teacher coming to you from Japan. I gladiate for students by being calm, consistent, and above all else clear with my expectations each day. #edugladiators
A1: It helps keep you motivated and positive. Without being connected, it is so easy to get caught up in the negative and mundane. Helps avoid burnout. #EduGladiators
A1: Connected educators show they are willing to teach what's new WHILE ALSO learning what's new. That parallel journey forward with students brings much buy-in and discovery.
#Edugladiators
My name is Nic Hahn, Visual Arts Teacher from MN. I always love to hear the perspective of people in other aspects of education. Can't wait to join in this conversation for a few minutes! Good Morning #EduGladiators
A1 It provides opportunities to learn more, as you becomes more connected, learn about new methods, tools, PLN helps you become reflective and start conversations w/colleagues, #EduGladiators
Sharing awesome resources. Already tried a few things in the first week I got from others and I like it so much better than my old ways. Sharing perspectives. Check out the #masterychat from this past week. #EduGladiators
A1: in our own communities we become isolated and thinking becomes narrow. By connecting we see broader possibilities. We are less alone! #EduGladiators

A1: Becoming connected lets you tap into the collective wisdom of thousands of years of teaching experience, helps you reflect on your own thoughts, and above all else for me, gets me fired up to teach! #edugladiators
A1 So many benefits becoming connected: a Global PLN with opportunities to collaborate and support each other. Many PD opportunities that you wouldn’t be aware of, access to Podcasts, books, webinars, Projects #Edugladiators
Biggest benefit is that it has inspired me to be better! I have made friends with teachers from all over the world!
#edugladiators#bfc530#HackLearning
etc...
A1: Becoming connected opened my eyes to the world of education beyond my district. So many great people, ideas, resources, strategies, approaches to support Ss, Ts, & families. #EduGladiators
A1 A connected educator is a constant learner who is able to reach out to
learn, share &collaborate with a global network
Our Connected Educators page https://t.co/TnGiVwkZYU#EduGladiators
A1: I have grown in ways I never could have imagined. It has benefited myself and my Ss more than I could ever say. I have also seen a HUGE increase in my confidence level. Plus I have met amazing people! #edugladiators
A1 When you let your guard down and let students, staff and families see who you are as a person you have the chance to connect with others! We are superhero’s in the eyes of our students so use the power to build trust and connect with them! #EduGladiators
A1) Sometimes it feels good to go somewhere where everyone not only knows your name but believes in growing the capacity of others to ensure success for ALL students. #edugladiators
A1 I have developed my leadership skills over the past few years by being connected with PLN and learning from them, invested in working harder, building relationships #edugladiators
A1: Not sure that words can express this growth. I went from a History teacher & part time techie constantly trying to figure it out on my own, to having a PLN that spans multiple continents. #edugladiators
A1: I found my TRIBE as I started connecting/building my #PLN - I gain such great new ideas, find solutions for my questions, and am able to help others with what I’ve learned! Getting connected changed my perspective on teaching. #EduGladiators
A1) You are never alone. There were days in my first years of teaching that I could go an entire day without talking to another teacher outside my department. Now the world is there 24/7. Empowers teaching and learning
#EduGladiators
A1) Sometimes it feels good to go somewhere where everyone not only knows your name but believes in growing the capacity of others to ensure success for ALL students. #edugladiators
A1: Because of Social Media, I have been able to set up an Artist Trading Card Swap where students from all over the world exchange Art. It's a powerful project that wouldn't have been possible if I wasn't a connected teacher. #Edugladiatorshttps://t.co/fUlRCeoy0I

#EduGladiators
A1: it has also allowed me to model how I use social media for learning, connecting and growing as an educator. My Ss help me with our class twitter account. I talk about how I use twitter and voxer. #edugladiators
Totally agree Debbie! This is my A1 too! I’m a better educator with an incredible network of friends who inspire, challenge my thinking and support me! #EduGladiators
A1: It creates authentic accountability. It’s not just that we share with others—talk. But we also walk with others. It creates a culture of mutual respect and responsibility. It also creates a system of support when we stumble. #edugladiators

A1: Relationships. You open your mind to new ideas and reach people you may not otherwise connect with. It's about bringing people together to accomplish something that otherwise wouldnt happen. #edugladiators
A1 You become part of a digital community #PLC that goes beyond normal working hours! By connecting w other professionals you share ur wins and struggles (as them) so you are now learning together meaning u are creating a collaborative space for learning #EduGladiators
Me too!! My first few weeks of school have been filled with great new ideas for connecting with Ss that I learned from my Twitter #PLN connections this summer! #Edugladiators
A1: As a teacher who is trying to find her "place", connecting with others has given me the chance to expand my knowlege of skills and strategies that I can utilize in a variety of classroom experiences. #EduGladiators
A2 I think by staying connected, making time for chats like this, or perhaps joining in some voxer groups, to support and get feedback/ ideas from PLN helps so much #edugladiators
A2) Make a small goal: 1 Twitter chat a week (or through whatever social media they r trying) then slowly increase. It's less daunting that way. #Edugladiators
#edugladiators A1: I find the sharing by educators on Twitter to be positive and useful. Not so on other social media networks. I like the learning-breaks I find on Twitter.
A2: Nothing is more powerful than a group of like minded individuals, all with the single goal of getting better. That's what being connected lets you tap into. #edugladiators
A1: Oh my goodness! How can any of us flourish without being connected to other educators. Joining in CoP with others who share my passions has been monumental in my professional growth. #Edugladiators#MyTribe#howiparticipate#PLN
Use their experiences. Every educator has been at a cross roads in a circumstance they didn’t feel equipped to handle. Use that as motivation to connect with others. Imagine if you could expand your sphere of influence and had support in that difficult situation. #EduGladiators
A2 - empathy is important. allow someone new to social media learning to be comfortable in this stage. model with your actions and your learning the benefits of being a connected educator...and then refer back to them as the source. #EduGladiators
A2 Some I know didn’t want a Twitter acct with their name on it. Start your journey with a class acct. Jump into one chat with someone you know on Twitter to get your feet wet #Edugladiators
A2: I would assure them there is nothing wrong with lurking. Maybe it’s on Twitter, maybe on an education website. We all have an area of strength. Your voice in your area is appreciated and needed. Speak up when you feel comfortable and you will be welcomed. #EduGladiators

Being connected does not have to mean social media. Let's keep that in mind. But social media does make this easier and the connections more broad. #EduGladiators
A1. being a connected teacher goes beyond being willing and open to learning new things on your own and articulating it. it spans to connections within schools, communities, peers, and students! you need both to build and grow, as both an educator and a person! #edugladiators
A2: think of how it feels to help someone discover something new. What if you could help create that feeling in a colleague create by asking and letting them teach you to get connected? #edugladiators
A1: The "WALLS" of the classroom disappear, & you become a GLOBAL learner... and learning is extended beyond your school, division, state, country.... #EduGladiators#leadupchat#edchat#ditchbook
A2: Allow our kiddos to be models for adults to utilize social tools like @Seesaw. This is a safe start for many teachers, communicating to school families rather than the big jump into Twitter or Instagram. https://t.co/EvBcEvmsfW#EduGladiators
A1: Becoming connected opened my eyes to the world of education beyond my district. So many great people, ideas, resources, strategies, approaches to support Ss, Ts, & families. #EduGladiators
A2 The goal is to break it. That's how we learn. Don't be afraid to ask a student. They know AND you just built a connection of trust with that kiddo. The worst that can happen is it doesn't work. Welcome to the tech world. Embarrassment ito not try. #EduGladiators
A2 “I don’t have the time” Start small, choose 1 topic (hashtag) that interests u & follow it along. 10 mins check everyother day & jot down the new cool things u have learned. How many did u collect in a week? #EduGladiators
A1. being a connected teacher goes beyond being willing and open to learning new things on your own and articulating it. it spans to connections within schools, communities, peers, and students! you need both to build and grow, as both an educator and a person! #edugladiators
A1 When you reach out and connect with other people that have a vision around education that motivates you to get better and shows your staff the ripple effects of connecting with other and that author shows up to your school to connect! #PRICELESS@mradamwelcome#EduGladiators
A2) I still remember when @jodiepierpoint said hello to me in my first chat and invited me back 😁 The first connection creates a desire to have more connections. #edugladiators
A2: Use that person’s own experiences. Every educator has been in a circumstance they felt they weren’t equipped to handle. Help that educator imagine if they had a network of support to ask advice and lean into. Encourage them to widen their sphere of influence. #EduGladiators
Q2: It’s been the most rewarding experience professionally other than teaching students!! Everyone is so nice and helpful when you are brand new to connecting! 😍😍😍#EduGladiators
A1 cultivate a phenomenal PLN and you will have support, have encouragement, be celebrated, be inspired, ..... and become part of something much bigger and better than yourself #edugladiators#bettertogether
coming from the #pd4uandme chat! I'm Lilian from MA. I am a pre-service teacher at Lesley University and am excited to be starting my day learning from all of you! #edugladiators
A2: We started a "Twitter" class after school so Ts & Ls could experience a PLN in a safe, supportive environment and it worked great! @WSroufe#EduGladiators
I don't want to live in a world like that now that I know. Some people just don't know and that's why we're here to help them understand. #EduGladiators
A2: Find one or two topics you are interested in and follow those hashtags. Find an author/writer you admire and see how they express their thinking overlaps with yours. #edugladiators
great suggestions Daniela, time is always a factor but there are so many ways that make our PLN building easier and learning more accessible #EduGladiators
A2) I still remember when @jodiepierpoint said hello to me in my first chat and invited me back 😁 The first connection creates a desire to have more connections. #edugladiators
#Edugladiators Q2: when I advice my colleagues to join #microsoftedu and #eTwinning they have fear how to use #ICT tools and how to connect with others they have fear from innovation

A2) Sitting down at the end of the day for 5 minutes with them to model what I do. Once they find the power of reflection & know they can ask questions - only takes two or three days.
#EduGladiators
A2: Twitter has often been explained to me as a radio... When you 'turn it on' you get information... it doesn't matter what came before or after... You just get the information at the time of engaging... and then you 'shut it off' :) Good way to think about it. #edugladiators
Nice. You got me thinking (and filtering through the Design Thinking Model) - know the needs of your audience. Know their needs/wants and then find tools to support "their connected journey". #EduGladiators
A1 cultivate a phenomenal PLN and you will have support, have encouragement, be celebrated, be inspired, ..... and become part of something much bigger and better than yourself #edugladiators#bettertogether
I would suggest that they DO NOT DON'T MIX their social media accounts. If they're going to have it, have one for family/friends, one for students & parents & one just for the PLN. #edugladiators
A2: Find your tribe, maybe a small group of regional colleagues, union leadership, or a statewide subject area group, & start engaging in edchats. Stay focused on what matters-building relationships & instructional practice-& don't be afraid 2 share your experience #edugladiators
A2: Jump in and get started! If you make a mistake, just click delete and try again - and feel free to “lurk” in a chat to learn about topics you may not feel that you enough experience with yet to express opinions on... I’ve learned so much that way! #EduGladiators
A2: Jumping in late! Agree w/ lurking on chats. Jump right in if it’s the right topic for you. That’s how I learned. I’m still building my network, but I enjoy reading tweets in my fave edchats. #EduGladiators
A3: Connect
- podcasts
- conferences
- local PD (in district)
- newsletters from professional organizations
- education publishers or media
#Edugladiators
Like that thought. One mistake many make with Twitter is that they think they have to read and view everything, allowing themselves to be overwhelmed. Helping newbies understand this is important. #EduGladiators
A2: Some educators don’t know how to start. A true community supports its members and facilitates the connection with new and old members alike. @participate has amazing communities you can join with teachers who share interests and goals just like you! #EduGladiators
A2. being independent isn't a bad thing, but being open to connections and relationships fills a void you may not have noticed you had before! it fills your soul with compassion and strength and community. it's a source of light when there comes a dark time #edugladiators
A3 The Band World has a FB Group with more than 10000 educators on it. What an Amazing resource. #microsiftedu Seeing who is the @edmodo Communiti3s. The best is when that translates to an IRL experience. #EduGladiators
A2:Being connected is not about imitation. It’s about inspiration. Connection creates opportunity to learn and and grow with others. It is a mutual reciprocal energy flow. It’s a connection. Some days the flow is low and that’s all the more reason to be connected #edugladiators
A3: Books are a significant part of my personal and professional life. I always have a book with me. I also enjoy attending conferences and workshops. Heading to DC next month for National Character Conference! #edugladiators
A3) I started using Voxer for a while & need to restart that. I also use a site AtoZteacherstuff where teachers can discuss different topics. I also love education podcasts. #Edugladiators
Q3: I use Twitter a lot. I’ve started an education vlog on YouTube (link in profile 😉) and I watch many vlogs too. I also frequent https://t.co/ijCjhTDxLZ#EduGladiators

A3: outside of Twitter, blogging is amazing to solidify my thoughts and share out. Facebook groups are great (esp internationally) to get everyone's perspective. share sessions with like colleagues at nearby schools/conferences. #EduGladiators
I belong to a few groups on @facebook. I also have connected on @LinkedIn. Former professors, former mentees, former Ss usually email me. I like the random connections because I bought a product. #EduGladiators
Because of twitter chats I plan to attend #NJ teachers convention for the first time in 20 years.... Because I want to meet my #pln and my fellow teacher Tweeps ftf:)
#Edugladiators
A3: My FAVORITE (especially for a Visual Arts Teacher) is Instagram. It's a visual way to communicate, advocate, and celebrate the happenings inside your school. Come see what I mean!!
https://t.co/CkGTt0VpRP#EduGladiators
A1 great way to update students on important topics/events while also a way to provide students with 24/7 support and links to online resources #EduGladiators
#Edugladiators A1: becoming a connected educator is becoming a creative educator, is learning from my #PLN, is sharing my idea with my colleagues around the world, is becoming e global educator, is think globally and act locally, I am a Lucky educator to connect and chat with you

A2 Build a PD Book Cart for your staff full of @dbc_inc#EduGladiators or @hackmylearning books and almost every author will challenge your staff with # that will help them reflect around their learning. Love book groups on Twitter. Gives the power of collaboration.
A3: PODCASTS. With the advent of smart phones, & unlimited data, it's so easy to stream & listen in your car or on a run. There is great content out there. Get listening #edugladiators

It is a great way to communicate quick, also to just join in book studies, daily conversations, not sure what I would do without having that access to so many educators and friends #EduGladiators
Q3: I use email a LOT! Keeping up and connected at a large school between colleagues has been wonderful! I use Voxer a little and F2F contact in my role as Instructional Coach. @EdcampUSA are a great way to connect also! #EduGladiators
100% agree - and you can just jump on Twitter anytime of day for any length of time and engage in a little positive PD or share something you're doing/get feedback! It's AMAZING!! #Edugladiators
Exactly! We need to recognize both online and #irl that each person's journey will be different. We need to lead with #empathy and #humility as this removes any and all obstacles from their path. #edugladiators
A3: I have a varied nuber of certifications and I have not quite found my place, so I venture in PD for varous content areas; sped, and Reg Ed. I enjoy a variety of webinars, books, Teaching Channel, Linked In, ASCD, @SimpleK12, and a number of other resources. #EduGladiators

#Edugladiators
A4: my goal is to STAY connected this year. Last year I dropped off and it had a big impact on my morale. Want to try attending more conferences this year as well. #EduGladiators

A4 trying to be more involved in online chats as my OCD makes it difficult to attend conferences (in-person connecting is difficult) #EduGladiators@PaulONeill1972
A2 like to make new friends? Like to collaborate with friends around the world? Like to grow as a person? Like to be encouraged? Like to have someone actually understand what your day was like 🧡☀️‼️⁉️ your twitter PLN does this and more! You get hugs, too! #edugladiators
Totally agreed Dave. First time someone left a comment on my blog, I was very psyched because up until that point I felt like I was just writing for myself (not that there's anything wrong with that!) #edugladiators
A4. I have to be careful to make sure that 'more connected' does not mean 1 mile wide, 1 inch deep. More connected needs to be deepened connections... focused on growth, perspective, and learning. #EduGladiators
A4: Online connections are great, but I really cherish the opportunities to connect one to one with colleagues and talk about teaching. Don't be afraid to schedule a meetup and meet face to face. The more we talk about teaching, the better teachers we become. #edugladiators

A4: I’ve guest moderated one Twitter chat and I’m looking forward to doing it again soon - it’s a great way to understand the “other side” of chats and connect with new people! #EduGladiators
A2 Take your time. Jump right in. Contradictory? Yes and that’s how chats work. You lurk for a while and then you get pulled into something that speaks to you. Go for it! You won’t regret it. #EduGladiators
A1: There are countless benefits of becoming a connected educator. A few of the things I've benefited from include sharing resoures and collaboration #Edugladiators
I think I've read every single word Dr. Mike Schmoker has written for this reason. By going *deep* with one author you can really get to understand their thinking. Same with twitter and blogs! #edugladiators

Q2. Hello #Edugladiators I have found that being connected digitally and globally allows me and hopefully my Ss to see that people have more similarities than differences. It gives me a sense of hope in society and it's future. So happy I jumped in!
