Hello. Relocated + still looking for a Teaching Position. Palo Alto hired me but no start date w/out pprwork + 🍎EduConsultant
Q1: What value is there in setting goals?
Hi all. K-8 ELA TOA for a k-12 independent study school that has 13 sites in 3 counties. I also have 9th-12th grade Ss this yr
A1: Goals help you forge a path to where you want to go, instead of wandering aimlessly, wondering if you've ever arrived.
A1: Goals help us focus on the WHY. Without goals we can be swayed by flashy vendors and changing priorities from outside forces
Kirstin, 4th grade teacher from Ladera Ranch, CA
A1) Goals help to give one direction towards what they would like to accomplish.
A1 - as with all goal setting, it allow Ss to focus on something they want to accomplish.
Lemarr Treadwell, 4th grade teacher, Fresno, Ca
A1 sort of. Depends on who's far out the goals are.
A1: Gotta have em, to show you've accomplished something.Especially short-term reachable goals for Ss. They have to see growth.
A1 “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” ― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
A1 everyday I look the complete one task or goal. Anything more than that is gravy.
A1: Goal setting keeps you organized and on schedule
A1: Goals remind us of where we want to be and help us to get there. Helps make Ss active participants in their learning.
A1: Goals guide us in teaching. They go beyond curriclum and standards into the heart of the learning experience
Agreed we have to stay focused on the WHY and ignore outside forces https://t.co/3WVKBThHQ4
A1: Goals help us focus on the WHY. Without goals we can be swayed by flashy vendors and changing priorities from outside forces
Hello ! Jumping in late, but happy to be here with you fine people! Todd, elem principal in Orange County, CA!
A1: goals help us to focus on the end result
A1 Goal setting acknowledges you know you can be better AND want to be better.
A1- setting goals, whether they are short term or long term, remind me of where I am going & what I want to accomplish
A1 I have a long term goal of having a club may recycled filaments for 3D printing
A1: Goals help u stretch, keep u honest and make sure u stay connected with your peers/ building leader
A1a Goals let us [and others] know where we’ve been and where we’re going. Way etter than breadcrumbs.. https://t.co/aLfgILhg3C
A1- when I know what I want to accomplish I can figure out how and goals keep it more focused
Hiya. Marla from 3rd San Marcos. Popping in for just a few...riding fumes
A1 the right type of goals can be rewarding & lead 2 growth - needed r measurable targets that build so 1 can celebrate or adjust
A1 but really when I am ask what are my goals for the year, I tend not to have any.
A1: - if you don't have goals your lost! I want to make my teaching mesh to best meet my Ss needs
Hi! Sorry I'm late... just logging on. I'm Becca Acosta, a RtI Coach in Fullerton, CA.
Gols are dreams with deadlines: I always loved that saying!
A1 Goals help us harness a growth mindset. Progress toward a goal means learning. It means knowing what you need next.
A1: Goals set a destination and give you a journey...they give me focus and a purpose!
A1) Setting goals helps teachers/students become more solution-oriented and self-reflective
A1 goals give you directions. Map forward.
A1- goals help me stay accountable to myself and help me avoid the shiny squirrels that are always running around me
A1. Goals help us focus energy, live a purpose-centered life, and provide a feeling of accomplishment. https://t.co/Zo93mZLezc
Oops. Late. Was working on my presentation for in a couple weeks. Chris from SoCal. APUSH and AVID teacher.
A1 Goals tell you where you want to go and help you get there
Jumping in later than Ha! Traci, CTO- Dublin CA.
A1: Goals help us focus on the end result, the "why" of the work
A1:Goals assist in determining what is important ...why we need to get there ...and how to map out the journey
A1: If you have a goal, you know where you are going and will do things to reach there :)
A1) Goals can help us to grow as educators... so much to learn all the time. Sometimes gets overwhelming
If we know our why so well we can see how other viewpoints are able to build even better ideas along the same path
Q2: What role do reflections play in goal setting?
I see Q1, but, am not seeing the question.
It's called being fashionably late...and you and I both rock at it!
https://t.co/sdFTzvOkAs
Jumping in later than Ha! Traci, CTO- Dublin CA.
So true https://t.co/iVSjptyj0T
A1: If you have a goal, you know where you are going and will do things to reach there :)
A1: goal setting gives me something to work towards. An end to a process or task or discovery.
This hits it ion the head! If Ss don't see the "why" they lose interest and motivation to keep pushing.
A2: Reflections let us know if our goal is reasonable and if our approach is appropriate. Sometimes revisions are necessary.
With everyone's definitions I must be the only wandering edu nomad
Sgree! As a matter of fact, one key goal can be to develop a 'growth mindset' for students
A2 Reflection is a critical goal in learning especially if working toward a goal. Helps us know how close we are to goal.
The acronym I use for Advanced Placement United States History. The title is a little much. https://t.co/ffESAi9O51
Revisions are sometimes necessary. How do we model this for Ss? https://t.co/3sxi0h4Wim
A2: Reflections let us know if our goal is reasonable and if our approach is appropriate. Sometimes revisions are necessary.
A2: Reflection is key to success. Ask: what was my goal, what am I doing to get to it, is it working?
A2: For me, if I don't reflect before setting goals, I feel like that carnival game throwing darts at balloons...blindfolded...
A1: an individual's and play a GREAT role in
A2: Reflecting helps to refine future goals
Doubt it. My goal change. https://t.co/aA19IUomBx
With everyone's definitions I must be the only wandering edu nomad
A2) Reflecting upon where you've been and where you're going is a big part of setting your goals and working to achieve them.
A2: Reflection helps keep goals front and center. Important step, esp. in our (& ss) busy lives.
A2: Reflections on past experience and the goal itself help us gain clarity on the what, why & how of a goal!
A2 Often, reflection get left off the lesson plan. Need to make effort to make it a habit of learning process.
Stephanie from San Marcos- principal. Excited to join
A2:Reflections can help users along the way to the goal as well as help users to refine their goals as they know their own needs.
A2: Honest reflections force me to evaluate results, and perhaps even the appropriateness of the goal.
A2: Reflections allow you to gauge your progress, or lack thereof, so you can adjust your plan, when necessary.
A2:reflections allow us to see if the path we are on will allow us to reach our goal. They allow us to change paths if needed
Yay! So glad you joined us!
A1- we should constantly be reflecting on what works & doesn't work & what we want 2 try. Goals should be fluid & adjust as needed
A2: reflections provide check points to see if you've met goal, on the right path or adjustment is needed.
A2 that is how you make next year's goals or find out they are not realistic
A2: If it's all about the journey, you've got to look back and embrace what you've been through. My Ss blogs were mainly reflective
A2 Reflection is critical for meaningful goal setting. Love reflecting and goal setting Mondays with my class!
A1: Goals can be a means to self efficacy! True accomplishments build self esteem 💗
A2: Reflection is critical. We learn from mistakes and failures..its impossible to do this without reflection
I show Ss my revisions on a written piece using draftback on a Google Doc
A2b: Reflection requires us to take a moment...take a breath...and plan our first steps!
A2: Reflecting on goals promotes accountability. Did you reach your goal? How can you do it better next time?
Yeah, perhaps reflecting on your goal makes you scared to take risks that are required! https://t.co/4cQf8Zb76D
A2: For me, if I don't reflect before setting goals, I feel like that carnival game throwing darts at balloons...blindfolded...
A2-reflections allow for reassessment of goals. It's difficult to teach as Ss don't have developed metacognition skills.
A2: after many reflections in CCTO program, for myself it lets me articulate my understanding and check assumptions on topics.
A1: also gives purpose to what you're trying to accomplish and helps to focus your energy.
A1. Goal setting naturally differentiating. Provide focus and accountability
A2) Reflection helps us have a self understanding of where we're at and what we need to do to improve... Always make time for it!
They had to think about the process that got them to their goals. ANd then share with others!
A2: Okay, just to get all academic on y'all, reflection is thought, reflexivity implies action on that thought.
Show your students “Austin’s Butterfly” Done and Done. https://t.co/3Uq3tLgsKJ
Revisions are sometimes necessary. How do we model this for Ss? https://t.co/3sxi0h4Wim
A2: Reflections let us know if our goal is reasonable and if our approach is appropriate. Sometimes revisions are necessary.
A2) Reflections help reallign ourselves to our goals and, if necessary, reallign our goals to fit our needs & capacities
A2 reflection is crucial for young students- they see growth through reflection
A2- reflecting on our goals can also help us refocus on our path, strategize what makes us stronger & helps creativity flow
Nathan what is this serious talk I'm witnessing in ?
Good point that it checks assumptions on both the process and the goal-setting.
https://t.co/RPSn82iQYK
A2: after many reflections in CCTO program, for myself it lets me articulate my understanding and check assumptions on topics.
----------------- Q3 is set. Watch for
----------------- Q3 is set. Watch for
A2: Reflection sparks metacognition in learners.
I have been on a serious kick lately.
Love the mention of reflecting on process as opposed to goal achievement. Brilliant!
A2 Reflection can occur along many times along the way; next steps become more meaningful
A2: Reflection is the culmination of learning. It is a pivot. We refine the next step. Reflection is curriculum with humanity
Just as important as the content. We've got to stress the "why"
Hi all! Was still up so thought I'd check in! I'm Katrina Keene, Education Strategist from TN
Q3:What would you say are the “secrets of goal setting” that every T and/or Ss should know?
A2: Reflection leads to iterations & fosters continuous improvement.
k idk how to relate to u anymore
we need to reflect about goals to model for students to think about their future
A3: Empower students & teachers by allowing them to take part in their own personal goal setting.
A3: secret = make them realistic and attainable.
Hey Guys- So I am checking in late- Kathy from Upland here. I teach 9th graders. Honors Biology And having a great year so far!
A3: The 'secret' to goal setting is that you're not going anywhere without a plan. You need a plan! :)
A2. Self reflection helps me resolve any inner conflicts I create from focusing on my goals. https://t.co/N4aDdonmzx
A3: Set realistic, attainable goals
A3) It's okay to revise your goal. Set mini goals so that they're more manageable.
I think they work but like to see the "A" as "action-oriented". If a goal isn't achievable, it's not a goal.
A3: I think, for myself, it is not to set too many goals. One or two at a time helps me focus and make progress quickly.
seriously! What's the deal here?!
A1. It is valuable to see where you end up. Based on the outcomes, you can change your approach or understand your journey better
A3: Any large goal needs identifiable smaller check points. If you can't break it down you can't do it.
You make a good point. https://t.co/47njjTRkIO
A3: I think, for myself, it is not to set too many goals. One or two at a time helps me focus and make progress quickly.
A3: Know may change, and that's a good thing.
A2:Reflection keeps the "why" at the forefront and encourages meta cognition which IMHO is really important to growing brains
A3: goals need a T or Ss (or both) checking in to keep them breathing!
A3 Start small--or start big and break into smaller steps! "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
is that a copycat pic of me from last week?
A2: awareness of personal strengths & weaknesses is an crucial component of sustaining the habit of lifelong learning
A3- don't be afraid to fail, be ok with not knowing the exact outcome, be forgiving if it doesn't go as planned and be mindful
A3: Create a plan! Need clear steps to reach your goal. Find a friend to help you stay accountable.
A2:I'm my harshest critic, how could I not reflect? No one's more brutally honest with my lessons than me.well, maybe my 4th period
A3) I think it goes hand in hand with having a growth mindset as these goals are being developed.
A3. Follow through, monitoring progress, realistic, attainable, purposeful goals.
+1 https://t.co/LSMeZZTWOe
A2:Reflection keeps the "why" at the forefront and encourages meta cognition which IMHO is really important to growing brains
Agreed https://t.co/w7LtCDF1UO
A2:Reflection keeps the "why" at the forefront and encourages meta cognition which IMHO is really important to growing brains
A3: Don’t focus on the outcome. Consider what processes are put in place to achieve any goal.
A3 - finding a way to look at your goal daily or weekly is important to maintain focus and allow for reflection.
I have never heard that before! I am so stealing & sharing. https://t.co/EytMG6VzXl
A3 Start small--or start big and break into smaller steps! "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
A3: said it . Goal setting needs an honest evaluation of current status and a willingness to stretch
A3: Make them matter by making them absurd. Nothing great was ever accomplished by following traditional wisdom.
How many of you are on mobile? Please quote the question occasionally. Makes it easier on those joining late.
The reminds me of a saying my daughter had “The Journey is the Destination!” https://t.co/mXaSjmtiJj
A3: Don’t focus on the outcome. Consider what processes are put in place to achieve any goal.
A3: When I set a goal, I make sure that I do what it takes to reach where I want to reach!
A3: Goals should inspire; be broad; tied to learning. Goals differ from objectives which are specific & measurable.
A#: Yes, it helps me too to start small! Starting big backfires! :( https://t.co/1KW2v0idyO
A3 Start small--or start big and break into smaller steps! "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."
Great way to look at it https://t.co/yyHtNF7VSs
A3: Goals should inspire; be broad; tied to learning. Goals differ from objectives which are specific & measurable.
I like this. Reminds me of S.M.A.R.T goals. Goals should help us get smarter... and grow!
A3. It is important to revisit goals once in awhile, not just set and forget.
A2 Reflecting as in looking back [post-mortem] to see what went well, what didn’t? Where might I/we push a little more?
This has been true in so much that I do; then in the end I feel I haven’t accomp. much. Needed to change that.
A3 Short term goals are essential. We need goals that help empower us to believe in ourselves.
I was just typing this as your tweet popped up on feed. Teach Ss goals should help us refine how we work.
A3: Big goals need actionable steps...makes you feel like you are on the right track when you can cross something off your list!
I am a one goal a day person.
Q4 is coming very soon. Look for tweet!
A2 Reflection is an act of internalization for lessons learned. The articulation of the process is paramount to making next steps
A3 Scaffold goal setting for students. Sometimes they don't know where to start.
A3) Secret to goal-setting: treat yourself every time you reach a goal!
Q4:How do you communicate goals and progress with parents?
A3: Goals should be attainable and measurable.
Why I love Google Keep - checking that box is hugely satisfying to me.
A3: "A goal without a plan is just a wish" isn't that the truth?!
A4: are great ways to communicate goals & progress with parents.
A4. Started using . Ss could post their goals and parents can view.
A4: I communicate goals through conversations or notes home.
I have recently become a Google Keep fan!
A3 Write everything down.. ideas, assumptions, roadblocks, goals themselves. Made visible they can be manipulated, acted upon.
A4: We just finished a week of goal-setting conferences w/ ss & Ps - we’re a team focused on helping ss grow.
A4: My biggest weakness right here. I don't. My focus is always on the classroom and the students. I need to set another goal
hahaha. I tweeted that too.
Goals are like mile markers in the learning process, let you know where you are and how long it should take to get to the next one
A4 - I only communicated these things via an IEP. I am interested in how Ts do this in their gen ed classes.
"If you expect to see the final results of your work, you simply have not asked a big enough question" I.F. Stone
A4: Student-led parent conferences are key
A4. Student conferences before Nov. parent conferences with goal sheets
I like the idea of documenting the whole journey, not just the success or failure https://t.co/AraDQT3kta
A3 Write everything down.. ideas, assumptions, roadblocks, goals themselves. Made visible they can be manipulated, acted upon.
A4) I've begun to use I also use to communicate with parents Need to figure out how to communicate goals to P
Google keep makes me sad because it never seems like I am making progress
every day my friend. Every day.
A4: bloomz app, notes home.
A4 Students have them in their binders. Would like to have them post them on learning blogs!
A4 We hold student led conferences. Goals are a huge part of that. Also, we allow Ss to add input to their progress report.
A4: My Ss write weekly reflections w/ new goals that parents discuss with them. Very valuable in home to school communication
I love this I will be meeting with parents and Ss together later this month as well! https://t.co/ci6n1HWIta
A4: We just finished a week of goal-setting conferences w/ ss & Ps - we’re a team focused on helping ss grow.
A4: By doing a family strengths assessment! Give them an opportunity to support their S by tapping into what makes them great!
A4: The best way is to have the Ss do that. With Parent Conferences coming up it is good time to make plans on how to do it
A4: Let students lead their P/T conferences...they can share their own goals and what they need to achieve them!
Here’s a great place to get ideas to try https://t.co/7jE8k7T5My
A4: My biggest weakness right here. I don't. My focus is always on the classroom and the students. I need to set another goal
A3) I find success by best envisioning the end state. The better I do that, the better the process.
Kevin, do you have any resources you can share with me that you used for this?
Keep has become indispensable in my day to day. Great for family org too
A2 Reflections help you realign things to keep you on track to meet your goals
Really like the idea of Ss having input into their progress report
A4) our teachers seem to really like using class dojo to communicate with parents
A4: And let's not lose sight of the families that lack parental/family support. How do we create an infrastructure around them?
A3) After that, I then need to deconstruct the purpose. That's absolutely critical. Getting that right it a true-must part of it.
Have you considered Student-led conferences? https://t.co/MfZUa5OBXm
A4) I've begun to use I also use to communicate with parents Need to figure out how to communicate goals to P
I love attending these...the focus is on what matters most...the student!
https://t.co/vlDm9VU6M6
We did this at my former school. I loved it.
I make a list of 6 things I want to accomplish for the day. I start w/ #1
A4: How about we use students as the vehicles of communication of goals and progress with their parents...powerful opportunities.
A4) I communicate goals/progress with students' parents by writing notes on cute Disney postcards. Students love taking them home!
A4 and are great for goal tracking for parents
A3. Being consistent is so important. If communication is open early on and stays that way, trust more easily established.
A4 weekly goal setting in planners. Parents see the visual and engage conversation
A4: Ts need to set milestones for progress of goals and set deadline. & mostly- how can Ps help Ss attain goal.
A3) Because after that, then I can get to the arches of the tasks that need to be done in support of these things.
A4. Being consistent is so important. If communication is open early on and stays that way, trust more easily established.
I move in so many directions that I forget what I was doing
Don't move on until finish. Helps me stay focused with many disctract.
A4: This year, I am trying to make more "good news calls of the day" Chances to share awesomeness of all students!
That is why the list is so important to me. I do that too.
This is great for personal Goals as well. https://t.co/6EB5F71LaD
A4: Ts need to set milestones for progress of goals and set deadline. & mostly- how can Ps help Ss attain goal.
A4 Needs to be frequent and consistent-U need to know your audience paper vs online
A3 I usually DM for a hat my daily goals should be
Agreed! Consistency and transparency matter https://t.co/RBOFVOv3Wl
A4. Being consistent is so important. If communication is open early on and stays that way, trust more easily established.
Great way to build that positive culture for all Todd! Love it! https://t.co/L9bxZdCTK6
A4: This year, I am trying to make more "good news calls of the day" Chances to share awesomeness of all students!
We use Google Forms ---> Autocrat.
A4: I LOVE the idea of student led conferences. Ss at present projects to community members as part of portfolio
This was a Non Scale Victory
Pretty simple. Ss share, Ps share, I share, then back to ss to set goal. Then we think of actions.
A4 Google Classroom is a great way to keep everyone up to date especially with the calendar
- "Daily goal: get housing before next ISTE." Done.
A2: reflections provide a means for monitoring of progress or are a reference point for adjustment
So you set the goal in the conference rather than have goal ready to share at conference? I like.
Authentic audiences are the best form evaluation! Makes it meaningful for the students also! https://t.co/YFWertxfPm
A4: I LOVE the idea of student led conferences. Ss at present projects to community members as part of portfolio
A4a Parent hat on.. student led conferences; kinda unclear goals at beginning of year. Woulda been nice to see learning objectives
That is different from what I’ve done, but I like the idea of setting a goal while all parties are present https://t.co/xszG9qKxz3
So you set the goal in the conference rather than have goal ready to share at conference? I like.
Yes dor parents with email it makes it easier!
And to the TOP of Devil’s Postpile and Inyo Craters
Yes - We want ss to hear input before they think about the goal. Sometimes may have to give extra time.
Me too! New thought to bring to my staff.
A4) Are we talking about effects? We should be. Goals should be derived from them. Move back from there.
And I like that it is a team thing. How do Ss feel in this process? Do they feel cornered?
I have been better about this time thing this year. https://t.co/9F28MxQfcR
Yes - We want ss to hear input before they think about the goal. Sometimes may have to give extra time.
is now trending in USA, ranking 37
-----------------> Q5 is up next. Look or tweet!
A4:Use Google Calendar to keep parents in the loop. Parents can add class cal to their own-all info in one place
Q5: How do you measure goal progress?
No. We’re def. a team. They know we are there for them. It helps that they start in kinder w/ this process.
I like this idea We do not have Ss led conferences but I can still have Ss set them and share the goal with parents
A4) Because how do you think you're talking to parents about goals? Colors? Numbers? Sea animals? Warp speeds? Try effects.
It isn’t about a “gotcha” moment for the ss to feel they are deficit. Very growth-focused.
A3: Have a clear plan of attack on the goal(s) break the goal down into manageable parts. there is no failure only feedback
Love. Thanks so much for sharing. Will show this to my Ts.
A5 Spirit fingers and jazz hands.
A5: 90%=A 80%=B and so on.
Loving this idea https://t.co/F0uxLpyqVt
It isn’t about a “gotcha” moment for the ss to feel they are deficit. Very growth-focused.
A5. Google forms. Ss submit their progress toward a goal.
Do you ever use rubrics too?
A5: My fear of quantifying human experiences-dreaming, creativity, possibility, failure, mistakes-makes me fear measurement (1/2)
A5- I am have been allowing opportunity to revise work. It gives them a chance to meet goals. Not every time- but occasionally.
A5) Goals are set on the report of student progress. Marks at next conference period reflect if they've reached goals
A5 Through reflection and revision of goals and what I'm doing to get there-writing/journaling as well
A5: Examine the result at timely intervals. Involve students & help them create a new plan to achieve goals, when they fall short.
Authentic audience makes all projects so much better!
Great strategy to show students that you can always improve and get better! https://t.co/CB0AP9OKih
A5- I am have been allowing opportunity to revise work. It gives them a chance to meet goals. Not every time- but occasionally.
A5: Having smaller steps is important. We set check-in dates and reflection is built in at least every two weeks.
A5: I hope our reflections include all voices and perspectives as we all might not reach the same point at the same time. (2/2)
A4c Oh.. should probably mention, my being a parent and having a kid in school, kids & me shoulda prolly come up w/our own goals
A5: Goal progress is different for each s and should be treated that way. I try to have a personal conversation with the student
A5 I'm hoping to gather a few ideas here tonight. I have used a Google Doc where Ss document progress over time.
Yes! Allowing S's to revise reinforces the power of growth mindset and agency.
A4d Teachers can’t do it all/alone.
Hold parent meeting conference, send notes home and have students write out there own goals for their parents to see
student created rubrics-super meaningful
A5: But I will qualify my fears by saying it really depends on the “goal” and the scope of the outcome.
A5: depends on the goal. Is the goal tangible or intangible.
A5 I'm a huge fan of 1:1 conferences. We keep a shared Gdoc to document goals and achievements.
A5: Meet with each student weekly to reflect on their progress. Plan next steps together. Track meeting data using
For my own monitoring of ss progress, each goal is written in their Evernote notebook, so I can record observations & notes.
A5) measure progress through formative assessments, frequent conferencing with students & completion of tasks related to goals...
Yes they are! That is where the power really lies. I did my master's thesis on self-reflection with rubrics.
Goal progress measured w/ self assessments, conferencing, knowledge checks. https://t.co/r8sAh3Fd8w
Q5: How do you measure goal progress?
I like the idea of a shared gdoc with goals that you and Ss can communicate through all year https://t.co/pVLEsQHWg0
A5 I'm a huge fan of 1:1 conferences. We keep a shared Gdoc to document goals and achievements.
. A5: How to measure progress should be part of writing a goal in the first place. Also, peer feedback always helps.
Love Google Keep especially the location notification that shared https://t.co/GFF5wp0CrX
I have recently become a Google Keep fan!
This is my next process during 1:1 conference- This was my first year attempting that as well. https://t.co/edJmI4sZ4x
A5 I'm a huge fan of 1:1 conferences. We keep a shared Gdoc to document goals and achievements.
A4:Hold parent meeting conference, send notes home and have students write out there own goals for their parents to see
---------------------> Prepare for Q6 from
This is something I need to focus on.
Sorry I'm late checking in. Brian Wise, EdTech specialist from Ceres
Q6: How do you support Ss with goal setting if they have a fixed mindset?
Agree. This brings Ps in for reflection and ideas as well. So simple and easy! Stolen item #2 from
A5) Learning Target Logs help students measure their goal progress and are private, low-maintenance, and kid/parent-friendly
I like that approach. Glad to hear that some others are using
A5: Pt. 2 I know this is not techy, but I like writing goals & taking notes in a notebook to track progress as I confer with kids.
I'm a big fan of using rubrics to keep students on track. Can be helpful for both S and T
A5. Goals = learning targets; Self-evaluation is critical! Student expectations --
Harder to do with with HS Ss. I only conferred with C,D,F Ss last time.
A6) Coach them to have a more growth mindset. Share with them the progress made.
Self-reflection develops agency in S's.
A6: So important to set a goal that is important to them and achievable relatively quickly. Pump up, then push a little harder.
A6 Setting goals can be very hard for some Ss. Be open. Build relationship. Help them see the why.
A6) You give them hope and small attainable goals to help increase confidence...
A6 - that is why is key to the daily lessons in a classroom. it helps Ss see the importance of goal setting
A6: help them to set a small short term goal that is attainable so that are successful. Makes other goals easier to set.
A6 I had a student once who cried about setting goals. It was really hard for him. Had a fear of not being perfect.
A5:As you measure progress use the opportunity to build a growth mindset in Ss by acknowledging the role of effort /perseverance
A6: Tough to do in isolation. Enlist parent or peer assistance. Like the idea of setting goals during conference will parties.
A6 have a goal yourself that you model having a growth mindset- lead by example
A6: Moving Ss to develop is incremental. Use open ended inquiry. Counsel S on value of making mistakes,
A6: When students have a choice in their learning, this can help break down fixed mindsets.
A6: Create short term goals so success comes sooner. Build up to long term goals, discussing growth mindset along the way
A5: completing tasks that demonstrate the learning objective or goal
A6- you have 2 constantly show what a growth mindset looks like & talk your thoughts out loud- let them know goals are 2 help grow
A6: We set class goals and personal goals. If they have trouble with the personal ones, they can lean on the class ones
A6: We are starting to do a lot of work with from Hattie.
------------------> will be sending out Q7 soon.
A6: Pt. 1 First, I break it down into very small steps, so that I know they will be able to achieve them.
A6: Create short term goals so success comes sooner. Productive struggle! Build up to long term goals, discuss growth mindset
A5x It’s hard to accomplish goals alone. So find the metric/measure that matters w/stakeholders & share needs/progress frequently.
I don't think the crying is only happening with Ss. The fear of not being perfect is a tough one for Ts too.
A6. Try to make growth mindset part of classroom culture--Build language around it and celebrate small successes and "failures!"
A6: Use any means you can to switch them to a growth mindset.
. A6: Allow Ss to revise until their work demonstrates learning. Don't just preach growth mindset; help them grow.
A6: Pt. 2 Then, we 'use the force.' Obi Wan & George Lucas are on the wall by our front Smartboard to remind us.
A6a These questions are getting harder..
YES! Help them taste success so they want it like water! https://t.co/qhdat1tXRa
A6: Create short term goals so success comes sooner. Productive struggle! Build up to long term goals, discuss growth mindset
I agree. Ss need to see you struggle too. Help them through the process. Hattie calls this “The Pit” https://t.co/3G11fKsH79
. A6: Allow Ss to revise until their work demonstrates learning. Don't just preach growth mindset; help them grow.
A6: trying a focus on learning that provides students with choice and an opportunity to continuously show their learning.
Been working w/ MindUp curriculum this year. Two lessons in. Meditation is next. We’ll see how it goes.
A6b Looking back at my kids’ and my experience it wasn’t they had a fixed mindset. nooo.. theirs was growth of a non-academic sort
Keep me posted on this. So interested! https://t.co/mjbXmtnYxD

Q7: What are the tools/apps/resources that you use to support goal setting in the classroom?
A6:possibly giving the Ss more say in the goal setting can open them up, break up their mind set or set smaller goals(baby steps)
A6c So maybe it’s helping student steer their mindset by putting it in their context/passion.
A7 We use Google Forms to gather info from Ss. Then use Autocrat to organize the info to share with Ss and Ps.
. Groups can have goals too. Some Ss who aren't motivated for their own sake will move mountains for their friends.
A6d Around 7th grade social experience seemed to matter more than academic. Shoulda prolly gone w/micro goals to aid focus.
A6: GDocs, GSheets, mind-map tools - this all makes me oldish I bet.
Affordance of : Ts can do more assessment FOR learning rather than OF learning
A7: to create a to-do list and check off goals. to submit progress and track data in
A7 Daily agendas, shared google docs, google classroom & shared calendar
Doesn’t make you oldish if it’s purposeful! https://t.co/eC052BZLrZ
A6: GDocs, GSheets, mind-map tools - this all makes me oldish I bet.
A7: KIDBLOG!!!! It is the best thing I've added to my course in my short career. So many different ways to to use it.
Love the idea of GForms. Smart!
A6) We focus on the first mathematical practice, presevering through problems. We celebrate students when they show preseverance.
A7 Going to help students build ePortfolios this year. Still deciding if we should use GSites (bc free), Freshgrade, or SeeSaw.
A7 Google forms, GAFE in general; , too in Google Slides (or on paper)
I’m in the same place. Not sure which route I’d like to take https://t.co/4lA5kPvsq2

I’ll try that with my grandkids. Is kindergarten too soon? https://t.co/xehaWpbZjX

A7: William Glasser has some good strategies for teaching goal setting. G-PAR Goal: Plan: Action: Result https://t.co/4PNpFdIWCj
will you be blogging about your experiences this semester? Would love to follow along! I bet others would too
A7 - hoping to learn more at this weekend's and through this chat. Thanks for all the info about this.
That is so true. Hard to work toward someone else's goal. Adult learners are goal oriented!
A6. Someone mentioned Rubrics. This is an excellent self assessment and goal setting tool.
A7) I use to upload images of Students of the Week, making sure to highlight strong goal setting and preseverence.
I'm thinking our discussion about being free and easy for other schools to use is important. We are modeling!
Will you "grade" the portfolios? How will they share theirs with others? I'm intrigued
Most of my students preferred using Wix for their digital portfolios but I'd like to try out new GSites
Right? I feel like that speaks volumes to ALL educators and not just the fortunate few https://t.co/w1uAxdjnLm

. We teach Ss to write SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Agreed-Upon, Realistic, & Timely. https://t.co/s1Ge2e44eI
A7. Excel, Assess, Personalized Mapping,
No grades. This is their place to showcase their best work! They will have already received feedback b4 posting.
Me & blogging - a tempestuous relationship. I will try. If not, just tweet me for update
Yes, Gsites are not pretty, but the New Sits aren't pretty good! Wix is blocked. :(
A6: Before S's present their projects, I have them self assess and peer assess on rubrics.
A7: shared google Doc's and slides, shared class schedule hoping/need to learn more apps and resources for this topic
I mean *are* pretty good! https://t.co/wVPRzCVuWD

Self/Peer assessments are so powerful for Ss growth https://t.co/34fjQPXF7k

A6. Progress checking on goals: The goals must first be autonomous. Otherwise, it is an exercise in futility
Well, if we use Gsites, they cannot share outside of our domain. But other Ss can see and they can add Ps.
Don't think they are enabled yet for my domain!
