Q3 A1 Find a mentor who doesn’t have everything figured out. The most impactful relationship is when a student is able to see that it’s ok to continue to learn! #LDChat
  • theNVLDProject Jun 27 @ 12:19 PM EDT
A3: Obviously through organizations like @E2ENational, but we also think it is important for schools to start taking the lead on providing mentoring opportunities for their students with alumni! #ldchat
  • UnderstoodOrg Jun 27 @ 12:20 PM EDT
Love this point. Mentors shouldn't be perfect. Kids can see them working through their own challenges. It's not what challenges you face, it's HOW you face them. #ldchat

Finding strengths is so important for these kids! So often, the people around them are focused on helping them with their difficulties that their strengths are lost in the shuffle.

  • E2ENational Jun 27 @ 12:23 PM EDT
Q3 A2 Ask your student who they look up to. Do they see @WonderWomanFilm or your local pet-sitter and idolize them? Often finding a mentor that’s similar to a student's idol can help to form an immediate connection. #LDChat
  • E2ENational Jun 27 @ 12:24 PM EDT
Q4 A1. We have seen mentors find that not only did they see a change in their mentee, but in themselves too! We’ve found that 1:1 mentoring is beneficial to both the mentors and mentees. #LDChat

Q4 A2. It’s easy for a student to be discouraged when someone who hasn’t been in their shoes saying everything is going to be okay. Having someone who can relate on the challenges and successes firsthand can make all the difference. #LDChat
  • theNVLDProject Jun 27 @ 12:27 PM EDT
A4: For our community especially, this is so important because #NVLD isn't as well known and understood as ADHD or ASD or Dyslexia. Students with NVLD need to feel like they are not alone and that someone understands what they are going through. #ldchat

A4: In more general terms, its important to find mentors that truly understand the ins and outs of what it means to have a specific LD. This connection, this deep understanding, is rarely found with parents and educators because they often have the same LD. #ldchat
