Hi all! Kimberly, Media Specialist from FL back for another round!
Great to have you BACK on deck. My school's been struggling with this one for a couple of years now.
Brad from Kansas City, assistant supt
We just had BYOD/BYOT opened at my school in the spring. Need ideas for using student devices for the greater good.
Welcome Brad, thanks for the support!
We've had phones for two years...still some unease!
A1. Right now it's "They shouldn't be out during the day." With BYOD I'd like to see that change.
Hello from Texas! Mary Hadley, academic coach
Hi Cathy from Sydney joining in
Howdy Mary, great to have you on board!
Jill from New Hampshire USA
Do you mean BYOD? If so, optional. If phones put away, compulsory.
Hi Kathy, love and loved hosting it for .
Hi Jill, thanks for jumping in, should be an interesting conversation!
We have had kids abuse them. I have a hard time trusting they won't allow phones to distract from class.
A1: Up to teacher discretion but also a large group of teachers lobbying for "phone lockers". https://t.co/CGwuBL8Ofs
Welcome Paige! That's pretty innovative! A1
Hello from Dubai ☀️ Looking forward to
Our campus allows phones as long as they are being used in task or outside of class
It's good that it's up to each teacher atm. Not a fan of the phone locker idea personally
A1 Limited. Low SES school. Equity challenges. Some kids have phones most don't.
Due to affordability issues, we brought them in before Chromebooks.
A1 I have brought them into LLC otherwise- no. But we are K-8
Same with us, we want the students to be safe users, can't prohibit and educate
Ss can't use phones in school unless T has them byod for in-class purpose
Least they're being used fit-for-purpose!
A1: Use appropriately before school, lunch, and in class when the teacher allows it... A change from "Never Out. Ever"
potential $ savings up front. Good strategy.
A1 Seems to me talking to teachers that primary schools are more open to students using phones at school than high schools?
We have iPads to help balance that, but you're right it is an issue.
Hi Tim, that's a big shift for many Ts. Well done!
Kevin a teaching Principal in Ireland
Great point. In high school, the SMS issue is massive. A1
Do you think it's because we primary people think we don't have to worry about social media? Not true.
I brought them in but I'm still frustrated at some Ss' unsafe use.
A1 Most professors opt for 'no phones' in class
Seems to be about managing safe use of phones. HS Ss are more likely to be risk takers with them. https://t.co/2VBpZeMwSS
A1 Seems to me talking to teachers that primary schools are more open to students using phones at school than high schools?
That is a positive start! Awesome! https://t.co/BwzmP28qem
A1: Use appropriately before school, lunch, and in class when the teacher allows it... A change from "Never Out. Ever"
Interesting. In my school, if phones didn't have texting, we'd be sweet.

Really, what is students want to take pics of work? A1
I have 2nd graders with Facebook accounts. And their parent are aware. Not safe at all!
Maturity or lack of maybe?
I also make the phones stay with me if they leave to go anywhere during class
we have to "trust" kids to make good decisions. When they do, applaud it. If not, have clear consequences.
As an experienced leader there is no such thing as failure. All attempts must be appreciated
Yikes. We do block all the social medias.
Are any of us HS teachers?
That's a great balance Tim.
We also had smart kids working around the school firewall to access innaproriate sites. Impossible to ensure proper use
A2. If the phone can at least text, Ss can use for things like Socrative. Smart phone? There's an app for that!
I teach 15-16 year olds for English.
A2 lots of educational apps, research, pics and vids for projects to name a few
That's so true. We need to educate not complete prohbiit IMO. Nice share.
That's so true. We need to educate not complete prohbiit IMO. Nice share.
We do too, but they use it outside school & talk about it in school. Parents need educating.
Hi! Errin from interior of BC,western Canada! In my school, I'm the only one who uses cellphones with sts in class.
Nice, I had students doing amazing videos on phone wevideo! A2
As teachers use them in tpl -immediately research/check content - add to understanding and share their findings = discussion
Good on you, what do the other staff think?
Good on you, what do the other staff think?
For sure! https://t.co/0R2xQsxG8g
A2. If the phone can at least text, Ss can use for things like Socrative. Smart phone? There's an app for that!
Parents will text their kids during the day. Just not worth having them in school. I realize this is not be a popular view
Google has voice to text so Ss can dictate to device (docs/slides) & recordings
I teach business grades 9-12
we do not block ALL social media. Ss access to library twitter, youtube, instagram -snapchat.
Connected to apps that support learning. Connected to each other for collaboration.
We block snapchat and instagram due to data management. Twitter yes but no FB.
We had a parent text her child during state testing & the phone was on.
Thanks! Most others in my school don't agree with using cellphones at school. I don't get it. I love it!
That's key isn't get the parents educated too.
I use my all the time for edu. Can't be a hypocrite!
A2: Ss can do exit tickets on their phones
Very cool! Kahoot and Google Classrooms rocks on a phone! A2
I really belive my kids can learn to write and think without these distractions. I am not looking for ways to justify.
offer a "charging station" on your desk or monitored area is incentive for Ss to leave devices with you!
Great honest response. Important the teacher judges their context re learning & safety.
A2 We use phones for multimedia (book trailers using iMovie, etc), imagery (art, photography) and many like translation apps.
So true! Some students just can't resist LOL.
True! https://t.co/skTWJ0SoxN
Great honest response. Important the teacher judges their context re learning & safety.
A2 Many great apps & ways to engage Ss
A2 Our Dance/Drama students use them heavily for rehearsing.
A2 when teaching maths, we look at history of concept and relationships - i encourage sts to 'google' or 'youtube'
Great share Dima nice work!
We either have Ss leave phones at home, in lockers, or give to Ts (turned off) on state testing days. https://t.co/ra3UY1OcZr
We had a parent text her child during state testing & the phone was on.
A2: I love , & BECAUSE they work on phones! mobility= access
Nice fit-for-purpose use and BTW Welcome. Loving your posts! A2
I do plan on spending significant time on responsible digital use of devices before allowing them for anything this year.
Parents texting the kids now KNOW to text them at lunch, or risk having to come pick up the phone
Wise move. Students need to be fully aware of the learning context, too hard to pull back!
The teacher went over that & the student never said she had a phone in her bag. Could have invalidated all tests
To Ss it is a distraction NOT to have it in their hand. Is their no compromise?
Thanks Mary, Use padlet all the time, never even thought of that!
I'll bet! That would be a great tool for learning in those environments!
They are great uses of phones! https://t.co/E66llkCSaq
Very cool! Kahoot and Google Classrooms rocks on a phone! A2
What a unique perspective. I let the students listen to music, reduces off-task behaviour!
I think that it should be up to the classroom teacher w/input from students & parents. Middle ground.
A3 lack of proper usage leading to misconceptions usually by adults. Ss will rise to occasion if boundaries are set
Love those ideas! https://t.co/RST9xHDy49
A2 We use phones for multimedia (book trailers using iMovie, etc), imagery (art, photography) and many like translation apps.
Never been a big Kahoot fan, but the Ss love it for revision!
A2b: I teach HS summer school atm and because my Ss are using their phones for WORK they are more ENGAGD & ON TASK
A3 not all sts have them - but sts could collaboratively (under guidance) use 1 phone in pairs/small groups?
Nice Jill. Great post. A lot of misunderstanding out there!
Love it! There is ALWAYS a happy medium.
Great expectation! https://t.co/w7UD8BPo91
Parents texting the kids now KNOW to text them at lunch, or risk having to come pick up the phone
Nice! That's one way of dealing with off-task behaviour. A3
I think it's important that they do learn to do that. Very. Phones great in some ways, not so great in others.
LOL I know one school did 10GB of snapchat in one week!
we have Canvas as an LMS so they can put it on there
So true, things are neither good or bad, it's the use or misuse.
Understood. Thanks for clarifying. Supervision goes without saying always.
A3: IMO the biggest barrier is TESTING. Because no phones during tests many Ts hesitate to have Ss use them in class.
Easy to supervise GAFE use on phones, harder re SMS use.
Easy to supervise GAFE use on phones, harder re SMS use.
Have guests coming for dinner so I have to bail. Great ideas! Looks forward to learning from you in the future.
We just added Canvas this Summer. It will be great to see how it is used!
Maybe the test format and content needs to change then? A3
A3 let me count the ways! Lack of concentration, connection, communication, confidence....
A3 One of the biggest barriers is that not all have phones or are allowed to bring their phones to school.
Q3 My 17 yo son goes to a HS that does not permit phones in class at all. Barriers must be > than benefits for them
A3 For me, it's the teachers scared of letting go!
A3 For me, it's the teachers scared of letting go!
A3. No clear expectations. Treating devices like toys and not like learning tools.
Love that. Shakespeare's relevant to edtech?! Who knew! ;) https://t.co/6SMArqYV8l
As Shakespeare said 'nothing on earth is good or bad, t'is thinking makes it so'
YES! Loss of instructional time for assessments that on BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE...not a fan...
I use Instagram and have kids follow. Plus, I follow back and then can monitor them 😊
librarians can help with that!
I hear you! Some afraid to change practice to meet Ss where they are. "If it worked 20 yrs. ago, " https://t.co/1nH8ODSAER
A3 For me, it's the teachers scared of letting go!
A3 Ss & Ts fear change; if there's training, guidance, support, & consistency, taking risks will be fun!
Absolutely! https://t.co/ANXvqT3pNZ
A3 Ss & Ts fear change; if there's training, guidance, support, & consistency, taking risks will be fun!
Wow, yet he can get married, drive a car and serve his country! A3
Ts need to know they don't hold the content anymore!
A3:
1. Some kids don't have a phone.
2. Misuse.
3. Parents who text kids too much, OR want no access for their child
Nice post. My son's school ask for old ones and have no sim card used so no SMS.
Good point. I know this to be true for my teen son at times. https://t.co/sU8f4FAcGl
To Ss it is a distraction NOT to have it in their hand. Is their no compromise?
A4. Set clear expectations. Teach them how to be safe. Teach parents how to be safe. Let Ss use devices to create.
I think you're on to something, can be too . Thanks!
A4 Clear guidelines for use, as we did when internet began being used in schools - sts sign agreement, penalties for breaking
A4 model, model, model, and ask your librarian to teach Ts & Ss good digital practices.
Thanks Mary :) The kids do too ;)
Yes! Sometimes low tech is better--balance is important.
No doubt this is a CRUCIAL CONVERSATION! For kids, teachers, AND parents to understand! https://t.co/rdt7rNkKnM
or just for the sake of using them assuming it's edtech
A4: I use a "stoplight" system in my room so Ss know red=no, yellow=ask, green=go.
Yes! The focus is not on consequences, but they are clear if Ss misuse.
All adults should model good digital practices. https://t.co/KWLe0gQe0e
A4 model, model, model, and ask your librarian to teach Ts & Ss good digital practices.
So is the old-school F2F LOL.
I don't think we will ever solve the phone in school issue but WE're trying!
Love these chats, but F2F conversation is also good!
Nice applies to all devices and digital contexts.
So true. Like everything else with kids, clear expectations are key!
A4 Communicate with parents about the learning and benefits of phone use and the expectations for Ss
How did you get started? I would like for Ts to ease into this.
Simple and effective! Nice.
Nice Cathy and this needs to be explicit and ongoing and via multiple modes of communications.
That's my point. Some of the things I see Ts post on Facebook alone makes me cringe!
Start with apps you already use on computers like . Stoplight system also works great for boundaries!
Yes! I asked a teacher to leave PD, couldn't let his phone rest!
A4 So complex. Constant learning about benefits & risks to every aspect (apps, healthy balance, privacy, dig footprint, etc.)
Love the fact you don't use your voice. Visual commands, expectations awesome!
Started talking....everyone was like "wow'!
Yes, a well-placed raised eyebrow works wonders! LOL
Very good point. Adults sometimes worse than the kids, IMO!!
ALL my Ss are ELLs (newcomers little-no English) so visuals are a must. :)
Comprehensive post and great tips! A4
I think parent education is a vital piece. I did an evening tech event for parents last year. Very well received.
Cool! Often innovative non-confrontational ideas come from the ELL context.
I will be doing some this year. Hopefully by spacing them out & keeping them brief I will get participation.
Yes even more so if we don't engage, allow because we don't know!
Absolutely. Lots of times in my class when there is purposefully no tech. https://t.co/2S9UwSx8Rd
I don't think so. Can't we have a quiet hour without the Internet ? Not a fan of testing but kids must focus
Must be fit for purpose or students can start to misuse and disrespect devices.
No going to bring religion in, but some people even text in church. I just think we need some restraint and time off phones.
A5. Model appropriate use. Not on phone during instruction unless it is serving a purpose. Show that it's ok to unplug.
Educate Ss, Ts, parents.. We live, work, communicate, connect in a digital world. Digital citizenship should be addressed
Yes, there is a time & a place. It's ok to unplug, people!
Nice! Simple and effective! https://t.co/MgqPv68eoP
A4: I use a "stoplight" system in my room so Ss know red=no, yellow=ask, green=go.
In Church, that's going a little too far. It's not that important. Loving your forthright educated promotions!
A5: Model appropriate use & digital citizenship. Show Ss how to use phones as a tool for learning.
There are places that had to tell people that it's not ok to do Pokemon Go. I'm sorry. That shouldn't need to be said.
A5 mine is to show tools to enhance, engage, & demonstrate proper etiquette. As well as prepare for future.
YES! https://t.co/m3A8jeZTXy
A5 mine is to show tools to enhance, engage, & demonstrate proper etiquette. As well as prepare for future.
Great point Paige, when this happens, less off-task behaviour. A5
Great post. I find if my students are engaged, less off-task phone use.
Q5: Once heard this If the adults who know how to behave leave the tech arena who will the kids learn from?
Nice, students often use it as their voice-piece.
They will learn from those who don't know how to behave, & who don't know how to engage appropriately https://t.co/VGspQeEwgC
Q5: Once heard this If the adults who know how to behave leave the tech arena who will the kids learn from?
I find the same when I let them listen to music. They talk less! LOL
We have 'off the grid' day. Make it an event and everybody on board!
Global School Play Day is all about that. Go outside and play!
Our deans needed to ban electronics for a few days due to misuse. Parent went ballistic. Sending poor message to their kids.
A5: Ts role - model, guide, safety, & ask the kids! Sts know so much about apps, etc. I think we need to learn from them!
I'm starting to like the idea of days once in a while.
Sadly, we see A LOT of evidence of this, yes?
have music playing all the time. Give them my phone& monitor ( model) usage
Schools have to have discretion or no influence!
You should check out . Ideas about low tech learning!
Q5 The q is confronting! Navigating new territory for most Ts. Professional discussion in schools is imperative.
Thanks will do. Most US chats are around my lunchtime!
I know of a pastor who encourages congregation to text him during worship! Don't know how I feel about that!
Some schools ban phone use yet wonder why students misuse phones. Hmmm. A5
how have we not crossed paths before? Lol
Doesn't he get distracted? I find that if I'm getting notifications all the time it's distracting!
No idea, but glad we have now!
Wow! Don't tell me he had a up. Maybe requests?
Wow! Don't tell me he had a up. Maybe requests?
So many have not had the chance to learn about appropriate use. I think Pokemon Go is one way that's coming out.
A5 first wks-I share my expectations w/ my Ss:don't use phone unless it's for edu purposes(notes, polls, etc.)
I don't know. A friend's church, not one I've attended. I'd think so!!
Great point. Edu needs to keep up with world outside!
Yes. There are just some locations where the Pokemon will have to get away.
Great share thanks. Will read after the chat!
I don't know! I think it was for feedback and participation purposes. I think!
Q% Not avoiding the Q tho. Ts role is focus on learning and find strategies to mitigate any issues.
When BANNING use, EVERYTHING is considered misuse. We have a powerful WASTED TOOL when we ban its use https://t.co/1Pzavpqbjh
Some schools ban phone use yet wonder why students misuse phones. Hmmm. A5
Excellent point, the phones are only going to become more prevalent!
A6. Utopic use: appropriate, creative, uplifting, problem solving, safe, and sometimes turned off.
Absolutely! If sts are so busy being engaged w/ activities they aren't going to turn to their phones. https://t.co/RNM22hFVDr
Great post. I find if my students are engaged, less off-task phone use.
Q6: research, designing on and exit tickets
A6: Ss using phones for learning in & out of class. Ss using phones & to create a positive digital footprint.
Does "appear" to remove the need for any edu around phones for many teachers.
Q6 A ban on them in school. I really belive kids can learn without them. I realize this is not a current viewpoint.
Our role as teachers is to make sure we design learning experiences. Being engaged in learning = not off task. Q5
A6 Distraction-free use. Is that too much to ask?!
A6 where Ss, Ts can use phones appropriately to learn & engage beyond brick& mortar balanced w time turned off.
And not using them as babysitters!
No and that would be awesome ? A6
Nice and phones should only be seen as one option.
Q6 Open honest dialogue, clear, shared expectations, focus on learning, equity of reseources
Nice Jill, IMO the more phones are used, the more students use them responsibly. A6
Maybe have them turned face-down & no vibration when not in use could reduce distractions.
A6: That all kids have access & use phones responsibly/safely to enhance/transform their learning.
A6 Provide PD to Ts 2 support use & dig citizenship for Ss. Set expectations 1st. Bans are an overreaction from poor planning
I'm just afraid continued banning makes them more attractive for unsafe/inappropriate use.
Very cool. I have a phones out at all time policy, so no pocket-texting.
That is usually the case. It mostly happens as they complete something and the lines begin to blur.
or provide charging stations as an incentive?
Likewise, makes them "dangerous", cooler than they are.
Thanks so much for this chat, everyone! It has been great!
yes, kids can learn without them. Ts should plan creative, active, engaging lessons.
Thank you. Great contributions! Much appreciated.
I agree with - awesome chat! Thanks everyone and to for moderating :)
This was invigorating thx so much!
A6 it will encourage Ts to be more creative, more aware of S needs, & to have a
