#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Hi I'm Shelly an adjunct in TX. I use badges for teacher prof development
in Canada. Host of a badging platform hosted in Canada, based on Open Badge Factory
welcome! Feel free to ask any questions.
Awesome to have you with us! We value lurking as its own form of active engagement!
I'm Noah in Denver. Passionate believer in Badges' potential to credential learning PreK thru Life!
First question coming up...
Q1: What seem to be the top challenges to user buy-in for Badges?
For the next 30min my tweets will be dedicated to Join or lurk! Topic: Building buy-in for Digital Badges
It's not lurking, it's Legitimate Peripheral Participation 8->
A1: T-I-M-E
It can be so hard for teachers who want to issue Badges to find the time to dive in
A1: I'd say time, knowing where to begin, and lack of a plan
Hi ! Better late than never! A1: Users are unfamiliar with value of badges, or have heard conflicting information.
Great point about hearing conflicting info..what are some of the common pieces of misinformation that are out there?
Agree! I think it's time invested in the right plan, tool, and how to integrate in curriculum
Celebrating diversity by developing knowledge and the share of the competitive global environment.
The *lack of plan* issue is crucial. Too often see this leading to Ts being overwhelmed...
A1: When a potential Badge Earner asks "Why should I care?" and not hearing a good answer is a big challenge to buy-in

Q2: What does buy-in look like? How might we measure whether it is/isn’t happening?
Some badges are issued for such small accomplishments that badges with actual weight are sometimes dismissed.
A1 Issuers: how to make them meaningful? Earners: what are they worth outside the classroom? Consumers: how to evaluate them?
Huge risk factor! How do we balance meaningful Badges with opportunities to realize early earning of Badges?
Agree! Can you elaborate on "Consumers" for anyone who just went HUH?
A2: Buy-in: when badge earners understand value of a badge and are motivated to earn badges and share their accomplishments.
A2: Toying with this idea: Do users who've earned/issue 1 Badge go on to a 2nd Badge?
Love idea that sharing a Badge I've earned shows buy-in. How might earners share their Badges?
A2: social media was a big indicator of buy in with my students & teachers. They'd share their badges on Twitter, FB & blogs
Badge consumers view the badges of earners who present them to them for a reason, e.g. employers, college admissions
A3: With Credly I can tell the most popular activities by seeing number who claimed their badge.
I am really loving this focus on sharing! Great data point we don't normally use in edu
I'm clearly too slow on pushing out our 3rd question since beat me to the punch:) Q3 coming in hot...
A2 badges applied for, accepted, displayed (where), curated, used by badge consumers in meaningful ways (hire, admit, etc.)
Thx 4 defining CONSUMER. I think engaged consumers will be huge factor answering the "why should I care?" question
So great that your students and teachers are sharing their badges! https://t.co/Mbz0KT5zmo
A2: social media was a big indicator of buy in with my students & teachers. They'd share their badges on Twitter, FB & blogs
A3: I think appropriate value propositions to motivate buy-in are a good thing...
A3 SEEK: opening new levels in the learning system, access to cool projects, external recognition AVOID: badges for pizza
A3: In ss who earn Badges endorsed by employers get career exploration opportunities with them. Huge hook 4 buy-in
Agree! I think your key word there is *ACCESS* => "Earning this credential will open doors for me"
A3: I think it's important to encourage sharing on various platforms like blogs, virtual learning environments, social media
Cool example of a new learning opportunity opening up https://t.co/I1wwdapeJD

Friendly reminder to make sure everyone sees your tweets by using
Michael from Maryland, in & out of tonight. Kudos to organizers for scheduling chat before !
A3: badge portfolios also a good way to display achievements and give a purpose to badging
So glad you mentioned *portfolios* as many Badge systems cross into that territory
Shoutout to all of you Lurkers who are following along...feel free to jump in w reflection on final question here...
same, & I started with stickers
Agreed! Can be curated toward further goals https://t.co/yWNLpkokd2
A3: badge portfolios also a good way to display achievements and give a purpose to badging
Q4: Let’s reflect! What are your takeaways from this week’s chat?
Yes! Idea of *curation* can be so powerful, lead to agency for Badge earners
Ss celebrating what was earned. Ts tracking and charting growth of earnings maybe
Thanks for popping in Michael! Been way too long! Any updates on your Badge efforts?
A4: Wider awareness of Badges means that challenges are different than they were just 1 year ago
A4: Badge issuers have an increasingly robust toolbox when it comes to how to promote buy-in
definitely a need to track the learning. Many badging platforms still lack these kinds of features
A4 Need to think of all the stakeholders in the system, not just the issuer or student alone
HUGE consideration!!!! Thanks for this reflection/reminder! https://t.co/lNH0ahatkY

sometimes but not always the case unfortunately
Great question. It certainly can be enough for some. What about the others who still say "Meh"?
A4: badging is hard & I don't know what I'm getting into just yet. Must research more. Thanx alot. LOL
balance of quality, security, and openness might require standards and/or governance
