Good evening and welcome to #gfedchat. Please introduce yourself and list your key takeaway(s) from our professional learning day last Friday on High Reliability Schools with @pbwarrick. #gfedchat
I'm Kelsey Cariveau - 7th grade English teacher at Schroeder. I wasn't able to make it on Friday, but I heard that I missed out on great content. #gfedchat
Kora Spicer - SLP @ Twining and St. Michaels. I gained a much better understanding of HRS. It was reassuring that it’s not a race and we have time to implement the process in our schools. Less overwhelming and more exciting! #gfedchat
Dana Boucher, 1st grade at Lake Agassiz. Unfortunately I missed Friday as I was ill. We all met as a school today to work together on next steps. #gfedchat
Theresa Ostgarden-South MS Business-There are things our schools aren't doing great but that is okay because we can talk about these areas and start having honest conversations and start making positive progress! #gfedchat
Britta Meza, Elem. Tech Partner at Viking & LA, my key take away was to stick something out 3-5 years instead of giving up on the introduction dip. #gfedchat
Oksana Kelly, elementary SWEP. It was good to remember the "old, common sense" ideas and strategies - HRS concept is not new, glad to see GFPS coming back to it! #gfedchat
Joel Schleicher, Executive Director of Technology; Key takeaways...“If we are not willing to have the hard conversation, we are not going to improve.” and “This is doable” via @philwarrick#gfedchat
Leah Smith, Special Education at Discovery. I felt excited during/after PD for everyone to be on the same page headed for the same goal but with the ability to get there in different ways. All arrows in the same direction! #gfedchat
Hi! Laura Manstrom here and I teach FACS at Valley. My main take away from Friday’s PD was that we can’t give up on our school wide approach to something. It takes time people!! #gfedchat
Danielle Swangstue - Special Education at BF - HRS is not a race. There are many arrows and they need to point in the same direction. Individual schools are all making progress.
#gfedchat
Krista Cebula, Kelly, 2nd grade, leave a legacy that is better for the next group, be in the pursuit of error free performance, do what you say you are going to do #gfedchat
Andee Thompson-3rd grade@ Discovery. When Dr. Phil said we have to give a program time to see success resonated with me. Often I feel like In education we jump from one thing to another and we won’t give time to master it/or for it to be successful #gfedchat
Trisha Lewis- RRHS- English... We need to have our arrows heading in the same directions to make positive changes happen... Also- celebrate daily!! #gfedchat
Eileen Zygarlicke, English @ CHS After listening to Dr. Phil liked how he talked about need to build the program not dance from one initiative to another. #gfedchat
From the book “What School Could Be,” Ted @dintersmith describes the PEAK environments in which students thrive; PURPOSE, ESSENTIALS, AGENCY, & KNOWLEDGE.
Q1 coming up in 1 minute. #gfedchat#WhatSchoolCouldBe
A1: Making sure every student feels welcome and valued in the PE setting. Stress working as a team and that every student is a valuable part of the team and we all serve a purpose to that team! #gfedchat
A1: Giving everyone an opportunity shine at something. Finding something that each Ss does well and letting them and their peers know it ! I think this is so extremely important ! #gfedchat
A1: For some things like writing giving them an audience whether it’s on seesaw, or publishing writing in class. Some subjects, it’s about having them set a goal on what they can improve and celebrate when they have achieved it. Celebrating each others successes. #gfedchat
A1: In RT we come up with ideas to help improve our school community through questions about their experiences and how to improve out climate. EX. Posters about a idea or topic. #gfedchat
A1: Use PBL whenever possible. Real World learning. This year I started off with a sustainability unit. Ss are finding that this concept connects to almost everything we have studied so far. Always making connections. #gfedchat
A1: Emphasize that our goal is the learning and celebrate growth instead of focusing on grades. Make sure kids are doing valuable work over busywork and explaining it's importance. #gfedchat
A1: For some things like writing giving them an audience whether it’s on seesaw, or publishing writing in class. Some subjects, it’s about having them set a goal on what they can improve and celebrate when they have achieved it. Celebrating each others successes. #gfedchat
A1: In special education (and all areas), we create and nurture relationships so every student feels a genuine sense of belonging and purpose. #gfedchat
A1: As a language teacher, I did my best to connect language learning with language use around the world... through connections around the world and the like. In my new role... still figuring this one out... #gfedchat
A1: When a student is absent, I try to make a point to tell them, "Welcome back!" and "We missed you yesterday!" -- Hopefully they realize that people notice their absence, that they aren't just there as passive learners. #gfedchat
A1: I ask often why my students come to speech and make sure they know what their goals are and why they are in my room. for articulation, I have a wall and they get to pick the sounds they work on with correction if needed. So they feel in charge and excited. #gfedchat
A1: This was the reason I chose 2 become a tech partner, I wanted 2 learn some new ways 2 create opportunities 2 help Ss find something they enjoy & their purpose. Each day I can bring in new tech 2 the classroom, the more opportunities they have to find a new passion. #gfedchat
A1: Use PBL whenever possible. Real World learning. This year I started off with a sustainability unit. Ss are finding that this concept connects to almost everything we have studied so far. Always making connections. #gfedchat
Everything we do is done for a reason with a purpose. We are practicing __ so we can ___. Learning objectives and use of "I can" statements give a lesson a clear purpose to students. We value their time and our by being purposeful. #gfedchat
A1: I try to serve as a model/mentor to my students, creating something meaningful in my lessons, celebrating growth and learning, and making sure each student has a purpose to strive for! #gfedchat
A1: In the past during our App Creation unit, try to ask kids to create an app that will help a need in our community. Think about what will be needed 5 years down the road. #gfedchat
A1: Helping Ss make connections to their learning and direct their own learning. Giving voice, choice and meaningful learning experiences through PBL, Genius Hour, Innovation time, etc. #gfedchat
A1: I always try to make that real-world connection with what we're working on. It might seem totally random like acceleration but then I introduce that connection and suddenly it's not so random #gfedchat
Thank you for being a curriculum technology partner and allowing students to make purposeful connections to their learning through technology! #gfedchat
A1: This was the reason I chose 2 become a tech partner, I wanted 2 learn some new ways 2 create opportunities 2 help Ss find something they enjoy & their purpose. Each day I can bring in new tech 2 the classroom, the more opportunities they have to find a new passion. #gfedchat
A2: I require my students to think, question the medium/image, pursue their theme, and create—to take agency and ownership of their learning. I give them the medium and they are required to develop their artwork. #gfedchat
A2: The growth mindset! The belief that one iteration is not enough. How many versions of iPhones have there been now??? The first time you do something is very RARELY (if ever?!) the best time you'll do it.... #gfedchat
A2: I always try to stress that you're probably not going to get everything right the first time and that you're going to fail from time to time and that's ok to do! #gfedchat
I like to push life long fitness activities. Giving students the skills to play games that they can play into their elder years. Frolf, Golf, Tennis, Pickleball. I think this is the best way to answer that question in the PE setting #gfedchat
A2: I do see value in growth mindset. We talk daily on things they might not be able to do…yet. We talk how we are all learning new things everyday, including their teacher. It can be scary sometimes trying new things but it’s the way to achieve some of their goals. #gfedchat
A2: Absolutely a growth-mindset. A willingness to fail forward and learn from mistakes. Being able to try again, grow, improve, learn and succeed. #gfedchat
A2: like to push life long fitness activities. Giving students the skills to play games that they can play into their elder years. Frolf, Golf, Tennis, Pickleball. I think this is the best way to answer that question in the PE setting #gfedchat
A2: Students need to understand that they will fail and that it's okay. Also for the kids that get it, how can they be pushed further and want that self motivation #gfedchat
A2: Essentials - developing questioning skills and building resourcefulness to use tools to seek, examine, verify and apply answers to these questions #gfedchat
A2: The growth mindset! The belief that one iteration is not enough. How many versions of iPhones have there been now??? The first time you do something is very RARELY (if ever?!) the best time you'll do it.... #gfedchat
A2: students need to be able to think, solve problems, experiment, analyze, be creative, and see "failure" as a result that you didn't expect
#gfedchat
A2 1)Growth mindset-learning is about knowing more than yesterday & better than yourself, not "good enough" for points 2) Know how to learn & unlearn 3) Creativity 4) How to work as a team (value variety of talents & use together) #gfedchat
A2: Check out these "competency" examples from the @MastTranscript Consortium: Analytical & Creative Thinking, Complex Communication-Oral & Written, Leadership & Teamwork, Digital & Quantitative Literacy, Global Perspective, Risk-Taking, Integrity… #gfedchat
Abby Goldenstein, SLP at West. I think this will be a great move for our district to all be on the same page and move forward together for the betterment of our Ss #gfedchat
A1 I want to hear students' voices...*saying "hello" as they walk in the classroom *asking what they remember from a previous lesson or their main take away from a lesson. I also give them choices when appropriate so they can feel a sense of power. #gfedchat
A2: Many of my students function best in a world without shades of grey. Communication and the ability to work through things that are uncertain to them helps them to thrive. #gfedchat
A2: Absolutely a growth-mindset. A willingness to fail forward and learn from mistakes. Being able to try again, grow, improve, learn and succeed. #gfedchat
A2: show the importance of celebrating the success of others often, set the tone that ideas can be shared freely and often, show that everyone is a leader, #gfedchat
A2: Growth Mindset is a must! We all fail, and they only way we can learn is if we keep trying, taking that extra step out of their comfort zone, and being okay with failing, and to keep going! #gfedchat
A1: I work on basic/foundational communication skills with my preK Ss which helps them participate in their class & at home; help them realize their words! They can have an impact on their environment by improving their communication skills #gfedchat
A2: #GrowthMindset- it seems that things don't work out or you fail at something many times before success. We must learn from what did not work and move forward stronger and wiser than before. Hands on inventing is a great way to learn to persevere. #gfedchat
A2: The ability to navigate the many technological resources we are provided today, creativity, not afraid to take risks, and to advocate for self #gfedchat
A3: One of my professional goals this year is directly related to agency. My goal is to provide students with more rubrics to help them evaluate their own learning and where they are on their learning goals. #gfedchat
A3: In my mind, agency is almost synonymous with choice. In my old role, my class was ALL ABOUT choice! I never told my kids EXACTLY what assignments they had to do; instead, I gave them a bunch of options. Again, still figuring this one out in my new role though... #gfedchat
Q4: In the classroom we had DI groups, responsibility groups, and Genius Hour to provide student voice and choice. Can not wait to kick of Genius Hour with Mrs. Ryan at South in a couple of weeks! Totally about student choice and innovation. #gfedchat
A3: Community is intrinsically about AGENCY. I offer them choices, they get flexibility, and it's self-directed. They have to WANT to work independently.#gfedchat
A3: My professional goal this year related to students taking ownership of their lessons and learning goals by developing rubrics to evaluate their own learning. #gfedchat
A3: I allow for personal and academic reflection. I allow my students to see me do this for myself, and I think it's very important to model. #gfedchat
A3 Choice-sometimes it's a matter of working by yourself or others, choice of demonstrating understanding other than a test, choice of topic to go deeper, choice of goals & steps to get there #gfedchat
A3: Lots of choice/voice. Where they sit, what they read, sometimes what they want to learn about, sometimes how they want to learn. Learning to own their learning and follow their curiosity - PBL/genius hour/ innovations hour #gfedchat
A3: I would say my Ss own their learning during math / writing the most. Sharing opportunities to show what they know, teach their peers, share their thinking/understanding #gfedchat
A3: Giving students opportunities to explore learning methods that work best for them and giving"show what you know" opportunities. Like the idea mentioned by @MissBoucher1 of adding more self eval rubrics #gfedchat
A3: Quite a bit in my opinion. Every lab is focused on the Ss designing their own experiment to learn something new on the current topic. They have total freedom on what it's about. This is usually a pretty big change for them and can make it an interesting transition #gfedchat
A3: In my robotics unit students have the ability to create and program (code) any one of four projects. They can also adapt their project as they see needed.
#gfedchat
A3: It is important to support and provide students with the freedom to own their own learning and provide various tools/resources (i.e. technology) to become a self- directed learner #gfedchat
A3: Upper level arts-are completely responsible for their mediums and they have to stay with a theme and then create!! They take more pride when they can pick. #gfedchat
A3: I let Ss see the data I take so they can understand what they are working on and how it's going. My visual schedule for each session includes one opportunity for them to choose what they'd like to do after we finish my planned activities #gfedchat
A3: Giving students choices, let them pick what they read or how they want to share what they learned, letting them choose a flexible seating spot where they believe they will be most successful #gfedchat
A3: Right now developing theme-based units for Ss to choose from. If they don't like something, they can propose how to change it to meet their learning style. #gfedchat
A3: In the gym, it can be a little more difficult, but I found out letting the students show their peers what they know/what they can show agency for them. Also, letting them create their own games/rules, giving them a voice in class! #gfedchat
A3 Choice-sometimes it's a matter of working by yourself or others, choice of demonstrating understanding other than a test, choice of topic to go deeper, choice of goals & steps to get there #gfedchat
A3 Choice is sometimes letting them make a mistake and learn from it to make a better choice (where they sit, how they prepared for performance, studying, book choice, tech tool etc.) #gfedchat
A3: I think technology has helped a lot with Ss taking ownership of their learning to the next level with things like SeeSaw. Also encouraging Ss to set their own goals and encouraging them to meet and exceed their own expectations. #gfedchat
A3: our 5th graders are preparing to write their autobiographies after studying the biographies of people of their choice- they have a lot to say!:)) #gfedchat
A3: Something small is finding answers to their questions that you may not know but investing the time to show them not only how you can find answers but also that you care about their interests. #gfedchat
A3 Life Skills is a VERY hands on class. Students have real products to work with and have results that they can evaluate (cooking and sewing). #gfedchat
Q4 Knowledge is best when everyone is a teacher and everyone is a learner. Rely on Ss to learn & teach not just the T being the source of info. #gfedchat
A4: Do two projects in Jr. English where Ss have topic --immigration and human rights--and they take those ideas in the direction they want to go. More depth as they research something of interest to them.#gfedchat
A4: Making connections to the real world, reflection on what they learned, teaching what they have learned to others. Right now my Ss are creating @BloxelsEDU games to teach others about sustainability #gfedchat
A4: Student lead classroom where student understanding and readiness drive learning opportunities. Flexible grouping, responsibility partners, and student led learning experiences. #gfedchat
A4: We need to give students the opportunity to share their knowledge and teach others. I remember growing up having a "fair" in the gym displaying different cultures for a history class so the whole school could see. #gfedchat
A4: Sometimes knowing what the student is interested in and letting them teach the class their knowledge on the subject. Also, using technology to aid in learning ex: explain their learning. #gfedchat
A4: I like to have those Ss that are on my robotics team be classroom team teachers with me during the robotics unit. I found they can many times explain in an "8th grade manner" that i cannot!!
#gfedchat
A4: When students self evaluate at a 4, encouraging them to take the lead and teach a neighbor. Sometimes we move on so quickly once a student self evaluates and demonstrates competency at a 3 or 4 without taking some time to solidifying it with some peer teaching. #gfedchat
A4: I love the idea of students creating lessons for other students. When I taught both 6th and 7th grade, I always challenged my 7th graders to make lessons that I could use with my 6th graders. Win-win-win for everyone involved! #gfedchat
A4: Making connections to what the students are learning to the real world, giving the students the opportunity to share what they have learned to others, and being able to reflect on their knowledge #gfedchat
A4: Creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable to share ideas also using Seesaw for students to explain their creations, thoughts, and ideas #gfedchat
A4: When the opportunity presents itself, students guide group members through lessons. Creating a safe environment built on trust and acceptance allows students to take risks. #gfedchat
I agree-Ss to Ss teaching can make peer connections in learning that I just don't think about from my perspective. Then I borrow those good Ss analogies in my own teaching :) #gfedchat
A4: I like to have those Ss that are on my robotics team be classroom team teachers with me during the robotics unit. I found they can many times explain in an "8th grade manner" that i cannot!!
#gfedchat
A4: Giving students time to think, time to try again if they fail (fail forward rather than just receive an "F"), and time to collaborate to develop something better than they could have by themselves. #gfedchat
A4: we often present a problem/puzzle with multiple solutions making it a competition between the teams for finding the most (making it and teaching your teammates) #gfedchat
A4: Class critiques. Each person takes turns talking about another students artwork. They need to say something good and something that could make the art stronger. This allows teaches them how to make their artwork stronger. #gfedchat
A4: To me this comes from having high expectations for them. Asking every student to make a poster on a topic maybe isn't this most rigorous thing but giving them the option to make a video or whatever else for instance and seeing them rise to the challenge is great #gfedchat
A4: I use lots of pretend play scenarios with PreK which leads to real-life communication skills: vocab they encounter everywhere, requesting, asking for help, refusing in an acceptable way, etc. #gfedchat
Q5: What are the most important innovations you/your school has tried? In what ways was each effective? Have they spread? How can you encourage others to try them? #gfedchat
A4 Students may benefit from examples (perhaps from a former student) to get an idea or spark. Sometimes just getting started is a huge hurdle to clear. Rubrics can help keep students focused throughout the process. #gfedchat
A4: Showing students deeper details and allowing them to ask questions that branch off of the core content. If they start connecting ideas in books/stories to the real world it can be more meaningful than the planned curriculum.#gfedchat
A5: A few years ago I started working with @SarahBoese and she introduced me to a standards based approach to assessments and it changed my teaching mentality forever. I've even heard of a few other teachers at RRHS who have jumped on that train and have loved it! #gfedchat
A5 #kidsedchatnd was SS led idea that Ts, including me, had to learn to help Ss make the idea come to life. Ts & Ss had to stick out our necks a little #Scary&Exciting #LetsGiveItATry#gfedchat
A5: Providing PD in a variety of ways for Ts. Also, Fab Fridays as a classroom teacher: Genius Hour, Coding, Maker Space, Innovation Time, student led classroom and other opportunities for students to be the leaders of their learning. #gfedchat
A5: I feel like some of the most important initiatives we have implemented at Valley involve creating student empathy and self-awareness. I'm not sure they count as "innovations" necessarily, but I think programs like SOS are VERY important in our current climate. #gfedchat
A5: Imp innovations--starting a book club that meets during lunch, reinforces reading not just for school but for life; We are Community days that offer opportunities to serve others #gfedchat
A5: i really gt to know my ss n their families, with preschoolers i get to know wht they know, wht they like n really use tht to help teach skills not only on their iep’s but basic skills they can use everywhere. I also really first focus on the expectations #gfedchat
A5: A few years ago I started working with @SarahBoese and she introduced me to a standards based approach to assessments and it changed my teaching mentality forever. I've even heard of a few other teachers at RRHS who have jumped on that train and have loved it! #gfedchat
A5: special topics classes, morning news for announcements, wide variety of clubs. These have allowed Ss to pick something specific to to their interests #gfedchat
A5: I have applied for a mini grant though gfps, and have been awarded $1000 grant through @SkatePass in an attempt to get skateboarding into the grand forks school district! #gfedchat
Trying to encourageour motto
Discovery Elementary School
Everyone is a learner, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a trailblazer, blazing the trail to greatness!#gfedchat
A5: An innovation at BF is the way students are released at the end of the day. This is effective in many ways, student safety is the priority. The topic of student safety is being discussed across the district. If only the community would get on board!!! #gfedchat
A5: I really appreciated the Culture Fair at RRHS last year --- students came together and organized a day where ELL students served food, offered information on cultural dress and activities, and taught native dances. #gfedchat
A5: not sure if it's an "innovation" but I keep finding myself using more and more strategies from all the social-emotional learning training we've had the past few years. #gfedchat
A5: I feel like some of the best 'innovations' for my school have been that attitude toward raising up student leaders. They are so valued and well trained, very visible around the school. I also love that student council is open to all kids in 3rd, 4th, and 5th. #gfedchat
A5: Google Read & Write for Ss with writing difficulties. Many Ss use this app to get their thoughts out by bypassing a weakness, I.e. visual processing deficit. It's amazing how some apps allow Ss to be successful #gfedchat
A5: This year @CenturyGF is implementing the 7 habits of effective people (and will continue in years to come). We are teaching our Ss the 7 habits in hopes to to empower our Ss in learning and life #gfedchat
A5: Working with a different curriculum schedule. I still find it weird and I want to add more programing. Maybe I will get to do a special topics next year. Who knows?! #gfedchat
A5: I try new stuff pretty much every block so I'm eliminating what doesn't reach my Ss and what does. Imp to change things up and try new things. Like to develop a new class for kids not going to college--more work based. #gfedchat
A5: not sure in my own classroom. But genius hour is a cool new idea I hadn’t heard of before. The teacher right across from my classroom has it on her schedule and it seems like a great way to allow Ss to research more about their own interests. #gfedchat
A5: we have used a few of the new platforms like Goose Chase and Seesaw with our students, and have purchased the new Reading and Math curriculum that I consider innovative because of it's rigor and teaching strategies. #gfedchat
A5: I travel to different schools throughout the week, so it is somewhat difficult to see innovations in the schools, but i enjoy seeing Ss having fun with breakout boxs, google expeditions, and genius hours, when walking by the classrooms or seeing them on twitter!#gfedchat
A5: Using Googledocs to collaborate both students and teachers working together. Using Seesaw to create activities for students to complete and share with families #gfedchat
A5: not sure in my own classroom. But genius hour is a cool new idea I hadn’t heard of before. The teacher right across from my classroom has it on her schedule and it seems like a great way to allow Ss to research more about their own interests. #gfedchat
A5: Techie Tuesdays/Thursdays (time for teachers to learn and teach others in their building about technology they are using in the classroom to enhance curriculum. #gfedchat
A6: Continue to provide Tt, just like Ss tools to allow for Ss to be creative in their classroom. Tools like time to access tech partners, book studies, speakers, etc... #gfedchat
Love this message!!! Our team made a poster with translations of "You Matter" in the languages our students and their families speak at home. It was awesome to watch reactions to it at open house! #gfedchat
A6: Ts need to know/be told that it is ok to stray from the curriculum and teach the standards in different way. It is ok to take a risk and try something different #gfedchat
A6: I think it's really important to allow teachers the freedom to try innovative new things. If they're worried about backlash they're less likely to try something. Also, not to always do something just because "that's the way it's always been done" #gfedchat
A6: at the elementary level I think it’s much tougher to create indecent learning opportunities as it would be for group opportunities, which are teaacher lead. Would be different on a one-on-one or small group setting. #gfedchat
A5: Techie Tuesdays/Thursdays (time for teachers to learn and teach others in their building about technology they are using in the classroom to enhance curriculum. #gfedchat
A5:using technology in place of pencil to paper. I think of a prior student that used talk to text to write out multiple pages but could not attend to paper long enough to write a sentence. Now I teach students how to use the various tools. I love Google Read and Write #gfedchat
A6: Yep. Was just thinking, "Educate the entire community on innovative learning ... including parents, businesses, etc." Parents and their expectations of their child's education play a vital role. #gfedchat
A6 Teach the standards in an engaging manner for SS, emphasis on learning with purpose. It's ok if it wasn't great the 1st time-->model growth mindset. #JoyfulLearning#gfedchat
A6: I feel it is difficult for T's to create distinctive and great learning experiences because we are scheduled with required standards and micromanaged. This might not be what Q6 is asking but it was my initial thought. #gfedchat
A6: Continue to allow teachers to collaborate and share ideas. Allow new teachers to be mentored and to mentor in areas they feel confident about.
#gfedchat
A6: To let teachers know that it okay to step out of their comfort zone and curriculum, to try new things and to not be worried if it doesn't go right, and learn from it! Growth-mindset! #gfedchat
A6: Teachers need to be given support to try new things. If it works, GREAT! If not, still be given support from admin. Kids aren't learning like they did 5 years ago, so teachers need to keep changing and trying new things. #gfedchat
A6: My P is a master at giving Ts freedom to try crazy new ideas, no matter how weird they may seem. Right now I'm playing egg roulette with grammar and mechanics review. P aughed at idea but it has worked wonders in engagement. #gfedchat
A6: On Friday in our Phoenix breakout session something that we discussed was peer evaluations, where teachers can go and observe other teachers to get new ideas & learn new strategies to improve their own teaching #gfedchat
