My Early Intervention page https://t.co/QHnjIOOOkJ We need better identification of things that will prevent learning or underachievement. The more we (parents & educators) know the better we will be able to facilitate learning. #edchat#ptchat#gtchat

A1) It can be difficult to guard against the tendency to ID kids that grew up in print rich environments, parents that have access, means, read to their children in the womb, refrained from “baby talk” & Ts refer and label as “gifted toddlers/kinders” when many are on 🎯 #gtchat
A2) Not only is it possible to provide early intervention without formal identification, it is often necessary taking into consideration issues mentioned in Q1). Many childcare facilities don’t recognize any identification. #gtchat
My biggest ? Has been we have required early intervention in PS for age 3 & up for develop delays why not the other end of the spectrum! Academics may soar but other things lag way behind! Asynchronous is the hallmark characteristic. #gtchat
A2. In NZ, we follow a great curriculum which should lead to informal identification and individualised learning. Students should be picked up and identified even without formal assessment. #gtchat

A2) daycare/preschools & preK need training. Many have no clue what to see or how to handle. The kids end up being labeled problem or behavior issues because they are bored! #gtchat from experience here.
A2) There is strong support for early intervention for gifted children based on developmentally appropriate practice; taking both age and individual appropriateness (Bredekamp,1987; Bredekamp & Rosegrant, 1992). #gtchat

A1) From personal experience, we didn't know what we didn't know. Recognized that eldest (and younger sibling) would benefit from Montessori model preschool (self-directed, and found one attached to an elementary school. Teacher referred for early reading assessment. #gtchat
A2) Informal identification should be based on teacher and caregivers’ observation across domains – cognitive, aesthetic, social-emotional, motor, language – taking into consideration expected behaviors for the age of the child. #gtchat
#gtchat completely understand. I only knew because I am an educator and gifted certified. I knew what milestones she should & shouldnt or weren't hitting. But w/o that I wouldn't know anything but a highly sensitive emotional & perceptive child.
A3) “Early intervention is critical to support students’ cognitive and affective growth. Enriched and engaging environments during early childhood years can lead to enhanced educational success.” via @drkerig#gtchat
One problem with this is that those unfamiliar with gt kids expect a kid to act his/her age, but that expectation is based on cognitive ability. GT 3 year old who thinks like a 5 year old is expected to behave like a 5 year old.

A3) #gtchat I think it helps map out the curvy roadmap that gifted/2e can be. It also helps to explain “issues” when other parenting books are not helping
Yes! #gtchat. We & lots of FB friends are facing this issue when trying to get appropriate education for kiddos who are 2-3 yrs above age in academics but on level or 1 yr behind in emotional
A3) Early intervention can help avoid underachievement and a loss of confidence. It can instead build confidence and keep that rage to learn alive. #gtchat
A3) “Early enrichment as a form of intervention is even more critical for bright learners who come from poverty or traditionally underrepresented populations.” via @drkerig#gtchat
Me too! I used to read those parenting books and wonder what planet those kids lived on. Then I found gifted parenting books. My planet - my tribe. #gtchat

A3) “Early educational experiences of many young gifted children provide limited challenge and hinder their cognitive growth rather than exposing learners to an expansive, engaging learning environment.” via @NAGCGIFTED#gtchat
I am still hunting for the right parenting book/guide.2e raising 2e and the clash of the Titans of emotions. Not one parenting book I read prepared me for that. #gtchat
This extends beyond #EarlyChildhoodEducation, i.e., GT kids in standard classroom who are 2+ levels advanced academically expected to show same socio-emotional difference as 'gatekeeping' explanation to not accelerate, yet failing to meet academic needs exacerbates SEL worries.
A4) Characteristics ‘usually’ associated with early giftedness include excellent memory beyond expectation for a specific age; mature thinking on complicated tasks; or precocious development of a specific skill. #gtchat

A4) Early giftedness may be expressed by self-management of personal learning; seeking new and novel experiences; early reading; delight in problem solving. #gtchat

A4) Young gifted children may seek older playmates; engage in imaginative play; display an advanced vocabulary; demonstrate asynchronous development. #gtchat
A5) Special activities and/or accommodations may include providing opportunities to interact with mental peers; opportunities to think both divergently and convergently – experiences with more than one answer. #gtchat
A5) Activities that allow kids to delve deep into topics of interest. Allowing kids to skip material they already know. Providing alternative homework assignments #gtchat
A5) Very young gifted children need exposure to social situations which respect the contributions of less-able children and foster recognition of the worth of all abilities. #gtchat
A5) Young gifted children are individuals with different needs. They shouldn’t be expected to take on additional tasks or those beyond development capabilities. Consider exposure to a variety of experiences. #gtchat
A6) Win a million dollars in a lottery so they can afford to pay for all the extracurricular activities they'll need to pay for to get those needed interventions for their kid. #gtchat
A6) Parents can create a portfolio of their child’s work to serve as a basis for consideration in later identification. They can keep of diary of milestones and skills attainment. #gtchat
Yes!!! And private Montessori school.. or any private school because they miss the age cut off to start school despite developmental readiness. #gtchat

A6) get comfortable fighting and advocating for your kids. Take notes on what SPED parents did years ago. We are now in their shoes fighting for our kiddos. #gtchat
My son was denied early entry into kindergarten (missed cut off by 28 days) because he couldn't stay for very long on one foot. He could read chapter books, though, and did well socially with kids of all ages (except really young ones). #gtchat
A6) Parents should take care not to place unnecessary expectations on their child. They can provide opportunities for exploration of interests with trips to the library, visits to museums and cultural events, and nature experiences. #gtchat
My youngest will miss it by 53 days but despite already reading and doing basic addition she can't start kindergarten according to age until 2020. Hello private school. And thankful for a preschool that grade skipped her to preK now. #gtchat
That's what I did - private school. But that was also a horrible experience. I should have pushed for starting in first grade instead of kindergarten. #gtchat
Good to know my work won't be all in vain. Oldest set to test into 1st in a month. 5hrs of testing in one day for a 4.5/5yo. #facepalm. Keeping the portfolio going anyway. #gtchat
Our next chat will be Thursday April 26th at 8E/7C/6M/5P US and Friday 27th April at Noon NZST/10 AM AEST/1AM UK. Our topic will be “Social Emotional Needs of Gifted Students.” @SENG_Gifted@jamestwebbGPP#gtchat
