Hello all! Paula from Az here. HS history tchr inspired by places that encompass nature!
After last summer, new experiences at conf, 1st thing I decided to change was CR setup Ss lovd it
A1: For me the driving force is the Ss, a place where they feel invited. I want them to feel at home! https://t.co/jKbGJjw7nw
A1) The driving force for me is how students will utilize the space and how flexible it is to fit their needs.
a1 space for exploring, group collaboration, working towards: more post-able, work-able walls, non-trad seating
Ronald Fisher 3rd G. Teacher my space, is outside 4 walls of school, "It's Opener there in the wide open air" https://t.co/59a6Iy37Es
15+ states and 3 countries represented in tonight's chat!
A1: Driving force in a learning space should be the learners. What would best fit their needs.
a1: flexibility in my space - my room rarely looks the same twice I need to ensure my students feel like it is their space
A1: Ss, what are their needs and learning styles. Size of the room/learning area
Where do students WANT to be. Flexible expectations and always reminding them the seat/desk is optional.
Yes flexibility because as your Ss needs change so will the learning space
I'm ready to explore! Intrigued by classrooms w/o desks. Any opinions? I like friendly, inviting, comfy spaces.
blows my ss' minds when I say that :-D
A1 Tough Q! Probably ease of access around room, ability to be flexible w/ furniture, Ss groupings & activities.
A1: important to think about the why behind your design. Why would you/your kiddos want to work in this space? https://t.co/sq1uzs4tXx
A1: my driving force is having a space that allows for unconventional set up, sensory options.. The "un-classroom."
A1: I want to accommodate all needs, but also want to separate clusters of Ss that could cause "rough waters."
A1 What is best for Ss, Can Ss see, enough rm, open for opps for collab, can everybdy move, different & unique
A1: My driving force is the answer to this question: "Who are my students this year and what do they want/need?" Need to ask each yr.
A1) I want the space to allow for movement, for students to be able to spread their work out, converse, share, and learn
A1: I look to see how my Ss can move around the classroom and if they will still be able to dance/present on tables visible by all.
A1: Does it fit the mission? Does it have a crown? Is it yellow or blue? can it develop readers and learners, than we're good to go
You will want to connect with my teaching partner she has an amazing flexible seating classroom!
A1 Ss first, ownership. Function and ability to transform are musts.
A1 The Ss and what best fits their needs
such a good point. My classroom looks different 1st period than it does 4th or 7th...
A1: Can Ss do what they need to do comfortably, efficiently & collaboratively in the space? Do they love to be there?
TY Sarah. I'm one lucky lady.
Yes!! Space...just flat out space is underrated.
A1:Purpose should drive the space. What is the purpose of the lesson or activity.Flexibility in space is important so it can meet needs
A1: A design that offers choice, flexibility, and is conducive to learning and collaboration.
LOVE! Check out her blog for more ideas on flexible seating! https://t.co/GdmVJfpzRK
A1: my driving force is having a space that allows for unconventional set up, sensory options.. The "un-classroom."
A1 It's flexible & feels like home. I want it to be flooded with photos of our Ss, their families, & our learning community of course!
A1 What's best for the kids. I try to accommodate their use of learning spaces by encouraging movement to fit their needs
A1 says "affective is effective!" Spaces that are beautiful and engaging
A1: How can I adapt this space to meet the needs of my Ss while simultaneously creating a collab. workspace that fosters creativity?
A1: the driving force for me is for the sts & what we need to be able to do in the space...also like to set up for choice.
A1: comfy, cozy, inviting space that isn't cluttered or claustrophobic
Thanks! I look forward to it.
I really need to purge items and clear out more space for students just to be... :)
My ship is sinking. https://t.co/O9XY2CC7CI
Yes!! Space...just flat out space is underrated.
A1 our fire code prevents comfortable seating (no fabric). we have to really think outside the box. Ss like being under tables though.
Beyond super excited for 10/22/16!
I am a huge fan of these!!! Where did you fine them?!?
if you want to see the power of flexible seating and sensory and student centered learning spaces, check out
A1 I've learned that you can do a lot with very little. The struggle was real in STJ. Quality over quantity. https://t.co/I99jJCTqsF
Yes!! Space...just flat out space is underrated.
So true, the needs change every year. It is important to consider
A1: Flexibility - 150+ Ss coming through each day. Being able to fit what each group needs
A1 And who says the learning place needs to be a classroom? We use any space we can, including outdoors.
Hi folks. Nikki from NW Arkansas. Teach art/grades 5-6. Somewhere w/art supplies in reach; being outside or seeing out windows
Yes...me too. My first class of the day vs. the last one. Different energy/different needs.
A1: My driving force is a space set up where I can get to every single student.
A1: Does the space spark joy?
A1: Creating spaces and places for students to experience innovation!
A1: support productivity, comfort, engagement, purpose, and differentiated learning... Welcoming and student created!
I bet I know who you have been reading!!
Whiteboard tables, rolling chairs, lots of floor space. Many areas where kids can work on projects. Everyone finds a niche
I create a comfortable learning enviro for my Ss. That means flexible seating & choices! You can't learn if you are uncomfortable.
A1 Can all students access supplies?Does it meet their creative needs? Does it showcase their knowledge and expertise in art?
a1: collab spaces, single desk spaces, standing tables, floor space, carpet space. you need it, we have it!
Yes lots of areas to brainstorm, collaborate, and connect are key. Learning is MESSY
I like a space that is simple yet offers some stimulation. Class pets and cheeky posters are a bonus
A1: I need my space to work for whatever comes at us. Big and small tables for different kinds of work
Sorry, jumping in late after being out for a tasty bday dinner- Kindergarten from Illinois over here!
You got it! Cleaned out 4 closets this week!
A1 Clubhouse environment where every learner feels welcome. Can interact w peers or work individually https://t.co/n7QJoDaYlR
Yeah... need to do a better task of having items available for students.
https://t.co/Q8k8fPMopb
A1 Can all students access supplies?Does it meet their creative needs? Does it showcase their knowledge and expertise in art?
We have put out FIVE new books in 2016!! Get the lowdown straight from the pirate right here: https://t.co/i60idtl38L
that's awesome!! We are a school modeled after Ron Clark Academy. So... Movement in the classroom is key!
A1: I create a comfortable learning enviro for my Ss. That means flexible seating & choices! You can't learn if you are uncomfortable.
A1 the driving force has to be, "What can I do to help students learn?"
Happy birthdayyyyyyyyyyyy
https://t.co/jT2kkIu9Pf
Sorry, jumping in late after being out for a tasty bday dinner- Kindergarten from Illinois over here!
YAY welcome! We are talking about learning spaces & your driving force in creating
Great environment. What are the colored spaces on the wall?
amen to that! The best decor is worthless w/o that consideration.
I love my wall size white board. Epic brainstorm sessions or think alouds. Best part it was <$150 to cover entire wall from
a2 not enough! Maybe I need to make that an end-of-the-year topic: Design Bro's classroom for next year!
OOO I would love to see a pic if you have one!
We did the same awhile back...but now we need to move to the rest of the house!
A1: Ss & Ts spend so much time in the classroom- it needs to be a place that connects us
A2: It's important that the Ss are involved in the design and function. Ss must feel comfortable and enjoy the atmosphere
Our PTO funded an outdoor learning space with benches and a whiteboard. Tough to utilize in Wisconsin winters.
I love everything about those pictures!
I've read 3/5.... My delivery with the other two should be here soon!
A1 Tables > desks. Collaboration and group thinking.
A2) Students have choices of what seating arrangements work for them. Some like the Yoga balls, Hokki Stools, or Standing
YES. THIS. also Birthday birthday it's your birthday! Thanks for joining in!
a2: each quarter we evaluate the room and see what needs to be moved or changed. standing tables get slid quite often
, I'm jealous of your huge white board. Building one might become my new summer project.
Student ownership is key. It is their space too. What will work for them?!
A2 Our students helped design our new library layout and are often involved in classroom layout. https://t.co/ziiVpzkNV8
It's balance. I added a workbench & sewing table to my room - on top of other art media, but also enough space for making
A2: Ss bring in framed pic of family during first week of school to put all around our classroom for the year! https://t.co/xpmR6az1f6
Love I'm on Team Rêveur all the way!
A2 student move things around to make themselves comfortable- we just need to be OK with that! https://t.co/ZjoLju2tIp
A2: We've just ordered some new seating options for our Ss to try out and give feedback as we begin project redesign at
A2 I make it an engineering problem for Ss to redesign our tables and who's "home base" is where. They love it.
A2- My classroom theme was always built around the interests of my Ss. Through the yr Ss reflect and add more to the classroom.
A2: I want students to be able to function from where they are at academically and behaviorally. A few are able to place themselves
A2:Everything, the spaces have to work for the Ss,its there learning space,Ss need to feel comfortable,if not learning isn't condusive
a2: "we can't see the board." "so how can we change the room to make it better?" such a jaw dropping question!
Love that idea! Blank canvas whenever u need it!
A2: this is so important yet so many times forgotten...students should play a huge role in space arrangement
AWESOME idea! Is this a formal meeting or an informal discussion? https://t.co/rZpnL5PtF0
a2: each quarter we evaluate the room and see what needs to be moved or changed. standing tables get slid quite often
Kim High 3rd Grade Portland,TN
Companies have radically re-designed workplace for flex working. Schools should re-design for flex learning https://t.co/ZMAU2Ribs5
A2 Not much as the lab is designed with safety in mind. They can arrange the tables as they like.
It is underrated but I get a lot of my classroom furniture at Goodwill. Mama taught me how to stretch a dollar! I'm self-funded, lol
each quarter we bring it up but it is open for discussion at any (appropriate) time.
A2: the number of students I have in my largest class & any physical needs are a huge factor
That is an awesome idea! Definitely doing this next year!
I love when Ss can advocate for their own needs. Their learning engagement soars!
A1: Can my Ss collaborate? Enough floor room to work? Comfy while reading around the room?
A2 I observe Ss, their natural patterns/movement--we design spaces to fit them, instead of making them fit the space.
A1: My driving force is my purpose & passion. I was born to educate, & everyday I get to live out what I was put on this earth to do.
A2: I used to start with a pretty bare room then let the kids work and projects guide my design... Different kids need different rooms
A2 I set up, let them try new arrangmt, give fdbk, this pd, gave , let them pick, paired up, use for coop learng
A2cont: sts should be able to have seat choice, choice in library organization, desk arrangement, indep reading areas, etc
A2: Student input would be crucial in making sure the space works best for them. So, it should be able to be changed frequently?
A2: Ss input offer suggestions all the time. They change the em as needed. Cave of Wonder->Ss suggested 😊 https://t.co/VaCrAl2gGn
A2 Ss have been helping to assemble furniture & equipment; Ss give feedback in discussions & surveys; I'm always asking if it works
, I love having yoga ball for students, but I have not heard of Hokki stools. Would make a great addition to my class
used to have an empty room with a rug, smartboard, card tables when needed. Ss learned everywhere in the building
A2 I invited students to take a very active part in my classroom -it's their learning space! https://t.co/wRTTxjjJxQ
A2: Beyond helping set it up, they CLEAN it up. All about independence. If it's not functional for them it's not working.
A2 I offer flexible seating & move it around. Ss choose where to sit--ideally where they can be most productive from day to day
a2 always different, let the students design if they own it they make it work or fix it.
Amazing! https://t.co/C6596iQCcE
A2: I used to start with a pretty bare room then let the kids work and projects guide my design... Different kids need different rooms
A2 Kids redesign my room everyday. By the end of the day, the set-up doesn't look anything like the way it started. Move it to use it
I made it! A little late, but I made it! Ready to
love this idea!!! A great way to build a positive, welcoming and inviting classroom environment
A2cont: let sts make the choices & the Ts can moderate & facilitate the choices & then help offer suggestions when things go wrong
A cave of wonder?! I absolutely am in love with this!! Please say a Whole New World plays in the background?! https://t.co/wn6FTO46s4
A2: Ss input offer suggestions all the time. They change the em as needed. Cave of Wonder->Ss suggested 😊 https://t.co/VaCrAl2gGn
A2: Above all, just remember that the space is for kids...not adults. We may work there, but they're the stewards of the learning!
A1: student empowerment is pillar I frame my teaching around.
I am self-funded too & am always on the look-out for deals👍🏻😊 That makes you a smart pirate!
A2:Thinking about giving a survey so they can self identify the best learning environment looks like for them https://t.co/UCK7kD69x6
This is an awesome idea! I love it
Yes they are a part of the space and it must be a team effort! https://t.co/LeFRZMIq9r
A2: Beyond helping set it up, they CLEAN it up. All about independence. If it's not functional for them it's not working.
A2: More than they realize. Comfort, coop learning, limit distractions, easy to maneuver. access to materials https://t.co/ZLjzIwDwd4
Well said! :) https://t.co/cQ557qlHmd
A2: Above all, just remember that the space is for kids...not adults. We may work there, but they're the stewards of the learning!
Thanks! I always said "cheap" but I like "smart" better!
Same. Not as much flexibility with 38 students. https://t.co/74bD6xGbML
A2: the number of students I have in my largest class & any physical needs are a huge factor
Thanks! Back wall becomes world's largest cheat sheet for each of Dante's circles of hell. Great visual aid!
A2 Shouldn't the Ss be the hub, the center, the focus, like a lazy susan on a round table
A2 My Ss were music masters, helping to select music throughout the day. Having a "lighting crew" is also gives S ownership.
Each time I see these pics of your Ss, I want to just come hang out ;).
I wanted students to decorate my plain unvarnished classroom door, but couldn't convince admin :-(
A2: today I added this 'udderly' amazing yoga ball- Ss established rules & expectations of how to use it https://t.co/3uJ0tK1kj8
A2: I make it a point to walk around my classroom on my knees each August. See it from their POV (my kids are tiny)
Thanks Sandy! Some intense action photos!
A2 Ss could curate images & quotes to display on the walls. It's a great way to have students contribute to the class culture
That is a super cute idea.
A3 good design leads to easy management
A3: Organization is key to maximize learning time. My new command central: table captains get supplies needed https://t.co/VlxSTtrL5G
A2: Not really had them help, but may be something I try in the near future just to see what they come up with!
So worth it...every single week. 😊
Great idea! I also sit at every space to help me get an idea of where to focus their attention. https://t.co/ZvWw258hgO
A2: I make it a point to walk around my classroom on my knees each August. See it from their POV (my kids are tiny)
my biggest class inspired flexibility & a new room design! THAT was the year the desks were ditched!
A2 Students are priority in space design. Allow space for movement, exploration, creating...listen to S ideas for arrangement
At one point, I have a Dodge Caravan back bench seat in my class. Kids would seatbelt themselves in for class. Fun kiddos
A2: I always allow my Ss to design the room, if they can sell it to me. I always refer to the room as "our room"
a2 (maybe?) most of my usable space is above the marker boards/ open closets. not very accessible. :-/
A3 like the tentacles of an octopus, classroom management should be encompassed into the framework of the design
A3 Dave Burgess casts a well deserved and distinct shadow... He's a hero & and inspires educators to keeping digging daily
A3: having Ss come up with norms/expectations on their own for OUR things. Learned that the hard way. https://t.co/ZCblccTgQ1
A3: The design lends to the theme of your management incentives.
A3) Need to have procedures in place in how to move from place ot place and/or how to utilize the space. Otherwise mayhem may ensue.
a3: Classroom management are is by strong teacher pedagogy and commitment to teaching procedures. Organization helps efficiency
A3 Pirates in STJ-rug was the "ship deck" the line was the "plank".Our rdg. center "the Captain's library" & under tables "below deck"
A3 So many times kids get in trouble for excessive movement. If you design for movement, those issues cease. More Ts must keep in mind
What did you replace them with? Our square desks have separate chairs so there is some flexibility.
A3: assigning table captains and having a central location for all supplies or textbooks helps with management
A2: Ss are themselves authentically. From the extreme extrovert to the nearly mute introvert, we can all find ourselves & be great.
Yes...this! Room should be functional! https://t.co/0L0ui1lz6I
a2: "we can't see the board." "so how can we change the room to make it better?" such a jaw dropping question!
In the process of ditching my desks too! 1/2 way there!
A3: I really just like to label things and ensure they have a place. It just makes life easier
a3: Ss know where all items are, how to get the items, how to work with people in the room. the prepared classroom is key!
This wording is brilliant https://t.co/cC7g3ixAtP
A3 like the tentacles of an octopus, classroom management should be encompassed into the framework of the design
My summer reading list DONE! Please tell me there's another photo challenge? Bootcamp. Can't wait to read them all!
my middle schoolers have a gift for being label-blind. Scissors have been in the same place all year!
I use points. Highest earners choose spots first.
so true! markers, pens, compasses, a place for everything!
Last year I had a S who needed to walk around his table again and again. We got used to it. He had to pace to learn. He did and he did
A3:Classroom management needs to be woven in with room design, procedures are key to transitions and movement
Must ignore the 34 students bouncing up and down on their yoga balls... It takes getting used to lol
https://t.co/bXBZ9VNN9i
A3 So many times kids get in trouble for excessive movement. If you design for movement, those issues cease. More Ts must keep in mind
A3: Just please remember the fire Marshall and ROE when designing spaces. Never fun to have to take something down :(
A3: It's important to teach students how to use a space. Modeling appropriate use of standing desks, beanbags, etc. is important.
A3: Many Ts think student-centered means no T control but it's really the opposite- rules & procedures make S-centered function
A3: My room has a "noise-o-meter" on prominent display made from an old clock
A3cont: another easy mgmt tip is having a bucket in the middle of table groups & pre-passing out papers for the group to the bucket
A3: Ss move where wish most of the time. There's not much management needed other than to stop spinning when I'm talking 😜
A3: I have space for their materials even though it's HS. I call it a No Excuses Classroom. It's all in there. https://t.co/1aQhoaNOz6
I want to get rid of my teacher desk so bad. Not sure if admin will let me... hmm
GREAT idea! I didn't even think of that. What are some of your favorite tools to create temp walls? https://t.co/wECh0y4XjA
I got rid of my desk. And then I figured, might as well allow students to access everything other than my closet
A3 1st 6 weeks of school focus on routine, procedures, taking care of our space & each other. Helps immensely w/ wanting to be flexible
Good organization leads to calmer teachers and students.
A3 I change my class layout regularly to reflect what works best w/ my students for classroom management https://t.co/MdgQHOEmC6
Awesome command central! Easy to get to and organized! I might need to become a pirate and steal this.
I've got a talent for disorganization *grin* Cleaning up is not a preferred activity. https://t.co/ZSbK9QPVKl
She really needs to make a career of it. Her organization talent is pretty amazing!
Earlier this year, I pushed my desk up against a wall. It is now project space. I use it sometimes but the kids use it more.
I may be a Pirate Principal and encourage Ts to take risks, but I still follow the Health/Life Safety Inspector Rules
A3 Our whole brain techniques were given pirate flare. Classroom design and responses were purposefully connected. Miss my firsties :(
A3 Ss have class work & media stored in spots where they can access & where they place them; they're responsible & take pride
Treat the classroom with a "mi casa, es su casa" zen like ambiance. With some parameters, Ss will feel a sense of ownership
Yes.Truth. I do love when admins advocate for homey & cozy spaces & go to great lengths to have items stay! https://t.co/JB5c7qxO81
A3: Just please remember the fire Marshall and ROE when designing spaces. Never fun to have to take something down :(
This is classic "Go slow to go fast." https://t.co/hs3ULFhGcJ
A3 1st 6 weeks of school focus on routine, procedures, taking care of our space & each other. Helps immensely w/ wanting to be flexible
A2 afterthought I got rid of my Teacher Desk converted to Student Center - Design changes when Ss are the focus
Greg, Jumping in a bit late tonight. Catching up quickly.
A3: Organization leads to easily accessible supplies and spaces which makes transitions easier - Wala - classroom management
Just got my Teach Like A Pirate book! Can't wait to read it & Explore Like a Pirate supports gamifying
A3: Everything in its place, allow for movement, procedures in place, & discussion of expectations plus discuss w/ Ss what works & why
A3 great room design=indirect guidance! Makes life easier and requires little explanation! 4 chairs at a table...4 S work space.
you should see the rest of her room... just as amazing
YES. THIS. I couldn't have said it better myself. https://t.co/OO15iZa8m1
A3: Many Ts think student-centered means no T control but it's really the opposite- rules & procedures make S-centered function
Kids are so much better at making their messes than cleaning their messes
Hmm. Could go in on this for a while. First off, you should be able to do whatever you like with your room
A3 Students have choice but their behavior when in a spot depends upon whether it's a good choice or not. https://t.co/c7EWWaNg65
I dislike the student/ teacher centered dichotomy. Learning represents a dynamic relationship between Ss & T.
Asked my Ss for ideas and they were awesome. Used Google Draw to design the space. Completely rearranged the library.
Nothing wrong with that! "Sorry about the mess, we're learning!"
A3cont: have sts set expectations for spaces and have them model expected behavior & then constantly remind & praise desired behavior
The T's desk is as much of a staple in the class as smoking was a staple of bars.See how quick that went away
Lol Don! Some are more organizationally challenged than others.
https://t.co/xNLvot3J5q
Kids are so much better at making their messes than cleaning their messes
Exactly! What we get accomplished in a year is amazing when we front load appropriately!
A3: I have my Ss in rows (I hate it, but there's like a million of them). I build "buffers" b/w behavior concerns w/ well-behaved Ss
& don't forget to and 2 more books to add to your collection. You'll be glad you did
And worse comes to worst. Shoot first, ask questions later mentality.
This on SO MANY levels! set up the procedures and protocols, and students can take over from there!
https://t.co/Pa6P5k2s4v
A3: Many Ts think student-centered means no T control but it's really the opposite- rules & procedures make S-centered function
I got rid of my desk 3 yrs ago because it wasn't my stuff; have old AV cart for my computer & stuff https://t.co/RkFIck7Cgy
Earlier this year, I pushed my desk up against a wall. It is now project space. I use it sometimes but the kids use it more.
Yes & we must help Ss see what spot fits.
Branding your class in your unique way does everything for the culture of the classroom
A4: Making your room somewhere the Ss want to come to each day. Learned that from
a4: Ss know the routines and rules, but never know what is coming. such a balance between structure and surprise!
A4: Buy in power. Give Ss voice and a class brand and they will work toward making that the best brand ever.
A4: Branding class creates a sense of community--Windham's Warriors, etc.
Why wouldn't admin let you???
https://t.co/FJhNfapIy6
I want to get rid of my teacher desk so bad. Not sure if admin will let me... hmm
A4 We've branded our 20% Time program, Harmonized Learning. The kids know they are participating in something special.
LOVE the alliteration! I'm a huge fan of that
Very nice! Will be flipping desks to create walls and art gallery walks! Thank you for sharing. https://t.co/BiyxKPwVqj
some feel it adds a professional aspect to the room. It's expected.
The personal conversations go so much further than in front of their peers.
Me, too! Best thing ever!
You got me! I push the envelope pretty far, that might be one step too far... better to ask forgiveness :-D
A4: Branding has a lot to do with the excitement of the classroom. Setting up the Ss for an exciting experience that others will see
These are the Days of Our Lives
https://t.co/UMQkgyPX7g
A3 like the tentacles of an octopus, classroom management should be encompassed into the framework of the design
A4:Own your theme/make it an experience. We are Seussville: class logo, Ss are citizens, label places in room https://t.co/WkJJpftBJQ
A4: call my kiddos the Brainstormers-got it from one of my favorite clinical teachers. Gives them ownership https://t.co/JNOGMsAk40
Agreed. There have been other concerns, but the desk is going before next fall!
Easier to get forgiveness than permission! I teach in a Cath. School too!
The honeymoon stage of getting rid of your desk may last a while. But long run, its worth it! https://t.co/CgfQj5QsQb
We can't get rid of them too, no storage for them, so they are now a required small group table.
A4: My Ss know I love being in our room & that excitement connects us
That is my concern also. How flexible are all Admins to allow for a unique learning space?
A4 ss know what to expect. High expectations, a scientific mindset, and a willingness to fail forward are part of the classroom brand
A4: make sure your brand includes them...not Welcome to Ms. So & So's class, that makes it your class...they need it to be their class
Be the place they want to be at. When HS Ss get told, "no you've taken all you can with them", you've hit the mark!
I hadn't had one in years. Less clutter!
T desk to work area isa great idea-- and the likely fate for this huge desk.
A3 Set some guidelines, expect, give Ss choices but remind changes can be made for happiness of all :)
ditched my desk and file cabinets this year, next year those role away storage cabinets that i go in once a year
A4:Branding can create that buzz for S and they get excited and want to come to that class,Ss don't want 2 go 2 the boring plain class
I scrapped it over the summer. Looked at it and said, "why do I still have this big old thing in here?" Didn't look back
Oh man..Stay tuned for Q5 for some ideas!
I should be fair to my admin, she lets me experiment a lot!!
This looks absolutely amazing. Wish I could visit your class right now!
New book to check out...exciting!!
You are not allowed to get rid of your desk?
A4) It gives a sense of community when you brand your room to your group's interests. Ties things together
That is like an oxymoron. Or should be, at least.
Funny...I was thinking "Like the Sands Through The Hourglass" when I read that tweet, too.
woohoo! We are excited to hear what you think of it :)
A4: Branding breeds belonging! My Ss love the coffee theme & share ownership&pride in our "Second Street Cafe." https://t.co/DlPPErhyiH
Haven't been told no yet... worried I might 1day step too far off into the wild blue yonder
Yeah, many Ts consider their desk "their space". Sending contradictory messages to Ss
Branding builds a sense of community. Currently holding a Ss logo design contest for our library and
A4: My signatures: "If they aren't in the room we aren't talking about them" and "If you Nominate some one else you nominate yourself"
A4: We call my room "The Museum", and so the job is to really make it a museum all year long https://t.co/bDS0BqrkHV
LOVE all this outside the box design thinking. I'll read this chat transcript when I have more time to focus on this!!
Right. There is always that line. If you have a great relationship. Give her the heads up
Drop that thing in the dumpster!
R team created mascot, team colors, a line of clothing, banners, flags, etc. Anything to make the kids feel special, like they belong
And you do that like a BOSS!
I'll periscope the room tomorrow & spin around it for some of y'all
A4 Ss know what to expect, engaging, exctng & diff, they like the design, envt, color, Ss enjoy being in room
S can c smartboard, can easily arrange desks 2 tables, plenty of floor space 4 working w/partners & stations https://t.co/lxvd2zIgfm
Space is a priority... but it would make such a great lab space...
So, push the boundaries and when everyone sees how engaged the learners are its no problem.
A4 We do choice-based projects & learning - encourage & w/ art media
a5 new T chair from admin, but I'm up and moving around the room 80% of the time anyways, so why do I need a fancy chair?
well said Creates buy-in, community, and ownership! Go be a Royal !
A5: Here is the area to the right of my guided reading table. It is tucked away but close when I need it! https://t.co/YYmLJMnYMT
What a great analogy! LOL
A5: I never perch. Always out among the crew. Learning together.
A5: All over the place. Staying still isn’t anything I do well so I am always moving with the Ss.
A5: The smallest table possible. For me, less space means I have to stay organized. More space, more clutter.
a5: i'm in the back of the room, or more likely sitting at their desks while they are leading at the board.
A5 I have multiple perches. I often perch on a table with the ss. The perch moves based on who needs the extra motivation that day
A5 I am constantly roaming the room. I'm more likely to be in the chair next to a student as anywhere else in the room
let the students own the space, perhaps tie in some incentive for getting to work there.
A4 make your room comfortable & inviting, but don't over plan! Give Ss input and display their work!
a5 At their tables, like to sit and listen to their conversations, even on the floor, but the groan you hear is me if i sit too long
A5 I get about 6-7000 steps a day just walking mostly around the room! Not perching much.
A5: Check out my co worker & her "crow's nest"! Great alternative if a desk isn't your thing! https://t.co/nKe01e1jIh
a5 at staff mtgs, Ts end up in ss chairs... its awful... I don't blame ss for getting antsy!
Love when Ts space is flexible to meet needs of Ss! https://t.co/wc0pYiHNhx
A5 I have multiple perches. I often perch on a table with the ss. The perch moves based on who needs the extra motivation that day
A5: Every T needs a home but you teach from your feet, not from your seat. Be immersed their learning and you get to know everything
haha - that was my biggest surprise when I got a counter: I'm at 10k steps just from my classroom and hallway!
It's true though. And for kids, they adapt super duper quick!
A4 & in projects and daily work builds interest and Ss want to come to class to create & share everyday
A5) It depends. Sometimes I'm in the middle of the room... most times I'm circling the room to different work areas.
A5:You can either be a lifeguard or swim with your Ss,I prefer to swim, but sometimes you need to be the lifeguard to oversee Ss
A5: I am "perchless" as I am constantly moving. I only perch when I'm sitting next to a S helping.
A5: The crow is in the nest with them, I sit with my Ss more than half the class period we sit in pods https://t.co/EvFUvVeDsK
A5 - Can't stop moving! I'm either sitting on top of an empty desk, sitting mixed within groups or constantly walking around the room.
A5: I move constantly. In often told "You must wear comfortable shoes!"
A5: I have a spot for my computer but I sit at their tables/couches/cushions as much as possible
Brilliantly stated! https://t.co/4KnuAl7tVf
A5: Every T needs a home but you teach from your feet, not from your seat. Be immersed their learning and you get to know everything
and decide to warn them of sharks in the water or let ss solve the problem...
Someone mentioned "my space" as a T, but everyone needs "their space" to OWN, consistency, safety for spec needs. I'm ok with that.
Yup... I'll sit down right next to the students and work alongside them.
https://t.co/buv0EXgv5e
A5: I am "perchless" as I am constantly moving. I only perch when I'm sitting next to a S helping.
A5 I walk on tables, crawl on floors, and play in the dirt. That's a pirate's life for me.
but wrecks havoc on the subs, they can't find my notes.
A5: It's much easier to stay afloat when swimming rather than perching.
Too many Ts still see the teacher's desk as the dividing line between "us" and "them". It's just "us"!
I love sitting with the kids. When I have reading conferences, I go to them instead of them to me
A5: during the day my perch is mostly at their spots around the room, conferencing with them or in the whole group mini lesson area
wow... Honestly don't know what to say :)
A5: I started using my coat closet to store curriculum books & materials- out of sight but still in my mind
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!! https://t.co/cqJvnugqPb
A5: Every T needs a home but you teach from your feet, not from your seat. Be immersed their learning and you get to know everything
Sorry about the delay. Baby's diaper went thermonuclear...required a bath
A5 - LOVE that everyone is saying that they can't stop moving! It's amazing to people that I have 10,000 steps on my by 2:00!
you'll find Ss sitting at my desk more often than me!
Need to . https://t.co/m7BuVj6GY3
Too many Ts still see the teacher's desk as the dividing line between "us" and "them". It's just "us"!
A5 I'm all over the room circulating between Ss groups I perch at a group table after dismissal. Lots of room to spread out & reflect
I have a teacher rolling cart towards the front of the room. It houses the doc cam, manuals, sub notes, etc. https://t.co/DuwYfGqx8Z
but wrecks havoc on the subs, they can't find my notes.
I kept my chair. Usually sit there when i sit, but don't have a problem sitting in a Ss chair if a S wants to sit in mine
I get about the same everyday😊 Once you commit to being part of the group, there's not much time to sit!
. I have some stools floating around I can pull up if there isn't a free chair! Doubles as a student seating option too
A5 I don't have a perch; usually walking and standing 90% of the day; have an old AV cart as my "desk"
Hahah, in my class, that thing, unless superglued together, is going down first ten mins of the morning
Q5: It's hard to perch when Ss steal my seat, but I do have one small table use my computer/ meet 1:1 etc https://t.co/7T3VtG6USf
same here-- and since I prefer to stand, that tech cart would serve me better than a desk!
actually shouldn't that be the stoop?
A1: Collaboration. How to get to Ss to help them quickest. Are Ss able to see & get to everything easily?
A2) I have little space for movement in the classroom, but try to allow Ss some freedom to move and shift as the need.
LOL! I had a sub think I left no plans when I had jury duty! Hello?!? Ss knew where they were!
Correct, but not scream out sharks, don't want a scene from jaws and create anarchy
kept mine too, but raffle it off every day so i guess its not mine anymore. https://t.co/gBP19F7hpu
I kept my chair. Usually sit there when i sit, but don't have a problem sitting in a Ss chair if a S wants to sit in mine
Its always great when you can't find the teacher right away when you step into a room!
A5 up and moving most of the time...when I land it's at the horse shoe table for small groups.😀
we have 6 desks in our room. A few Ss like to have their own space some times.
Yes sir. First time, Ss looked at me odd, now, it is routine. It has become culture
Not to mention they're metal, 100 years old and look like they should be in the Smithsonian.
A5: Might have jumped up on a desk today to get immersed I am amazing lesson in room today! https://t.co/UPzXgu4BTX
I also pin them to the board... with the big red note saying. SUB PLANS HERE.
https://t.co/ItmIyHUx4X
LOL! I had a sub think I left no plans when I had jury duty! Hello?!? Ss knew where they were!
is this Sunday 4/17 all about to boost student learning. Join us 9 pm EST
Girl we have to hook you up!!
Would love to see a pic of your room. I hate the plastic chairs than S desks.
YES! I've found this to be more conducive to authentic conversation as well. https://t.co/OpkB4ZQhOG
I love sitting with the kids. When I have reading conferences, I go to them instead of them to me
. it's the best way to see the show!
A5: I mingle! I'm usually part of their group, on a beanbag beside them, or leading at our horseshoe table.
A6 My room may induce sensory overload. I like lots of stuff hanging around: street signs, posters, police caution tape. Interesting
A6: I don't think I rig it to help anyone, I think it's sensory overload LOL
I have about 6 desks as well. Some Ss like the desks. 4 are in a 4-top and the other two are side by side.
have to log off a bit early - have a great week, !
On top of no desk, I roll with the couch in my classroom..the space screams "get comfy so we can learn hard" https://t.co/Sl3bHAG5Rl
Ditto, that's what I do, the Ss know I am only at my computer for a sec. setting up next activity & then off https://t.co/CZBlDuxLJQ
A5: I have a spot for my computer but I sit at their tables/couches/cushions as much as possible
A6: wanna bounce? U bounce. Wanna sit alone? Sit alone. Wanna rock? You rock! Whatever you need, we've got it https://t.co/GWuM4ZzQgD
Ask hmm why not?! :) https://t.co/Ddo11Lm8eD
Q6: Be unconventional. Take the legs off tables, let them sit on floor, use music stands as desks, so many possibilities!
A6: Love my coworker flexible seating, trampoline, & piano! Great for sensory breaks & fun! https://t.co/gN6AYCJfwP
A6: All Ss are within auditory & visual range of my sarcastic remarks, & I really think it adds to class, except when it doesn't
A6 I’m about to have to put desks in rows for std testing coming up.
: (
A6: by allowing choice among tables or desks or clipboards or choice between chair, pillow, ball and by having open spaces w/o clutter
I love how flexible seating can be adapted to suit the grade level and teacher individuality as well
easier to grab on to their life boats, as you bounce from S to S
the whole tlap series is great as well as their Twitter chats and . I also love Whittaker's and Couro's books.
A6: Have you heard of "sit spots"?! Great alternative if Ss need space makers but carpet isn't in the budget https://t.co/1IE5NTHMw9
A6 - I have my room set up in groups and I allow students to work wherever they feel comfortable. Different spots and groups each day.
and relatively budget friendly!
I love sensory overload. My coworkers always comment that there is too much "going on"
A6 Lots of open space, different style seats and table heights, and themed areas to work.
A6 Provide options...traditional desks, clip boards and rug...space to move
have we looked at the online world our ss inhabit? Its always too much going on there!
A6) We try to keep wall distractions towards a minimum. Not too busy. We take movement breaks. Have Yoga balls and Hokki Stools.
A6: Should allow for safe movement and supp learning. This is 4th gr class , notice her walls? https://t.co/dOerYgtiU0
Get the entire and line of books. Pirates your Ts and Ss will be!
A7 I change the class to work w/ lessons- the space needs to facilitate the student learning https://t.co/eO2CeSLrWZ
A6: Streamlining my decor with calming colors (blue, green, brown) had massive effects on the "mood" of my classroom.
Anything is budget friendly when you can find a grant ;)
I did the same. I burrowed a few desks to adhere to Std testing. I miss my arrangement
Oooo what are Hokki Stools?!
That is both amazingly awesome and astoundingly brave. What grade do u teach?
A6: I have a this year. The pump provides white noise, allows for private convos in small groups https://t.co/KRPCgyMeBL
YES! That is what we need for the ideal classroom. It would be great if we could all ditch desks and make change.
Phew! 1 min. from last question of the night? How is that even possible?!
A6 Have lamps & turn a set of overhead lights off; there's a lot in my room though so it's probably sensory overload for some
nice! Did you buy or build? Where? plans?
Yep, 2 walls like that, but her BIL Ss know exactly where to look, so on STAAR, they will be looking there and remembering.
"Oh Captain, My Teacher ... " just make sure it is the sturdy desk ...
I am a minimalist, by nature... I admit, not alot of stuff on the walls, but a lot of natural light!
I am a minimalist, by nature... I admit, not alot of stuff on the walls, but a lot of natural light!
Nah, every kid will find something interesting. It's good that way, IMHO
I can not believe I just used burrowed instead of borrowed. I need to sleep https://t.co/3EBFhzx9wB
I did the same. I burrowed a few desks to adhere to Std testing. I miss my arrangement
A2: no teacher desk so I am not sitting. Being with the Ss. No front so Ss are center of attention. https://t.co/WSYdUDLeHk
7/8th grade social studies. I know that it isn't the best thing but, I don't like assigning seats. Let them explore.
Did you see has a bike and standing table now and is bringing in a trampoline?
Very cool. Just be cognizant of the Ss who need a space void of that. I would love my mind in there! No work done
have kids from all rooms come down for a ride!
Me too! I took a course on boy-friendly learning spaces & this was encouraged.
We had a T do that last yr (moved now) and kids were so much more calm. LOVE it!
a7 space doesn't get much of a charge, but projects go into overdrive, genius hours, what if projects, open windows!
True, the kiddos who need empty space may find it lacking. Something I've struggled with
A7 I start building more stuff in it, (they have the skills now) and we spend less time in it as we test the stuff we built
A7: Just bought standing desks for one of the classrooms. I like the bike desk but that will have to come next year
Hey, get them ready for high school. With a solid school culture in place. I would do the same
I would love your class. Too much is sometimes too much. I don't where to focus.
. I wrote a grant through our local educational foundation and purchased with those funds. We have 3 in Sped classes
we do the same. It works pretty good most of the time 😊
A6: rolling white boards always entice movement. kids LOVE! Excuse our boring SBAC scoring day notes, please! https://t.co/IAPp0OIznb
Easy solution. As long as you school allows it, let buddy bring a desk in the hallway outside the door
A7 already thinking about nxt year 2 make it better based on Ss feedback from EOY surveys; gears always turning; excited 4 next year
I LOVE these! It is on my wish list for next year!
As long as they show respect to themselves, their classmates and me, I let them move. They know what they needs to do.
Bringing a desk outside for a student to work is not always a punishment. Can be a positive for certain Ss
Of course. I use the hallway as an extension of our classroom. Kids are out there a lot
A7: How about setting up an Academy Awards themed space & lesson for the end of the year? Here's the details: https://t.co/dnyEJgnj7Y
A7: I'm always adding new things or taking old things out- Ss aren't surprised when somethings different, just a typical day in KW
Love EOY surveys. Often do for other areas but need to include classroom design as well. https://t.co/dXBpPhMdHs
A7 already thinking about nxt year 2 make it better based on Ss feedback from EOY surveys; gears always turning; excited 4 next year
A7: Are the lights on or off?! Sometimes it's the little things! I set the mood this AM to wake up our brains https://t.co/4PEWsnjbBU
this is how we arrange space for maximum room to make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. Life of a child. https://t.co/KMzKnWkugN
Exactly... we have the small amount of students who think they can do anything but can't really handle the moves.
Sensory overload, just means that you are trying to capture the attention of 28 different Ss we know!
A7: challenged our staff to focus on space last week, impressed by our staff
A7: I'm ready to have our Ss redesign the spaces and materials needed for next year's classes. S developed supply lists.
You mean to tell me the hallway is not part of our classroom. Oops
I have had an exercise bike & a punching bag😜
I saved an old podium to use as a stand-up desk. Wish I had more!
lol a little something for everyone
Used to have a desk in the corner of the room,Ts thought it was for "bad" Ss.Told them, that's the corner office!
A7: If I could just take everything out (clean) and then throw it all back in a different way I would.
my room doesn't have a front or back or near teacher desk either; makes it tough to complete IEP and 504 questionnaires
great idea! I use that old podium for laptop, lego, and K'NEX storage!
great room...jealous of all the space!
A7) Have students redesign it. Put the call out for wishlist of items for how you'd like to see. Move more learning outdoors.
I think I'm going to like it more than the kids https://t.co/OzfzNXTShr
I saved an old podium to use as a stand-up desk. Wish I had more!
What a great project for end of year reflection! https://t.co/CRAcrep6v2
A7: I'm ready to have our Ss redesign the spaces and materials needed for next year's classes. S developed supply lists.
I LOVE these chairs! They are much easier to store than yoga balls!
Some schools are very diligent about supervision, accountability, and all that fun stuff...
A5: I perch in the center of the room for me to sit with students. I do have a comfy chair for SSR. I'm usually walking around.
Yes outdoor spaces are important too! https://t.co/BxMdWglOqw
A7) Have students redesign it. Put the call out for wishlist of items for how you'd like to see. Move more learning outdoors.
am thinking of something like Kids Choice Awards, (slime included) Great idea and blog got me thinking!
A7: last year I started flex seating with 10 days of school left, it's never too late in the year https://t.co/8xC5gF0Yxv
Wow!! Thank you, for hosting tonight! Powerful topic...fantastic discussion!! Thanks to all who contributed!
. It's been great for cross-curricular too. My geometry built a seedling house for it last month!
A7: We are focusing on a hook of the week to keep the snowball rolling these last 5 weeks. Up now-Picasso Hook! Can't wait to see!
A7: Our last Sci unit drives our class design-Engineering-making real products...kids so involved and Love it!
Multi-purpose! I have maps & construction paper stored in mine. Easy for Ss to get to supplies.
Still don't get how some of my Ss READ while listening to their MUSIC!!! but hey, Im cool with whatever works for u
Thanks to for steering the ship this evening and for for allowing me on board! Sorry I've been MIA.
Awesome! Can't wait to hear what you come up with!
So important to remember! Don't always have to start at beginning. Start when ready! https://t.co/LopQAt5cHc
A7: last year I started flex seating with 10 days of school left, it's never too late in the year https://t.co/8xC5gF0Yxv
. It is very relaxing. Especially on days when we can eat a salad from it for lunch!
Yes ma'am. That is a constant tradition in my classroom towards the wind down moments of the year
This would be amazing to take to my team. Hmmm...great idea, Beth! https://t.co/VRPfsxoqYo
A7: We are focusing on a hook of the week to keep the snowball rolling these last 5 weeks. Up now-Picasso Hook! Can't wait to see!
A7 Keep your room reenergized by taking student input and ideas for new arrangements. Even if it's for 1 day!
Hey! I hope you will join me next Monday when I host chat 9:00 PM EST. I’m excited. Can you tell your friends? https://t.co/hja4R8HBZD
Thank you for joining us! :) I loved all of your ideas and already have the gears turning!
Great Job tonight and great job ers. Thanks for the learning
A hook of the week?!?! I want to know more! Are you working through all of them?!
Thanks for letting me slink in late late late - easing back after spring break! Great one 2 nite! TY
my space needs some love-- project for the rest of the year! Thanks all!
A7: I love to rearrange & purge! Move things around! Ss love it and it breathes some life back in
Thank you & everyone 4 an inspirational chat... Can't wait to move furniture for next year!!! https://t.co/Pl6pynW59E
Wow!! Thank you, for hosting tonight! Powerful topic...fantastic discussion!! Thanks to all who contributed!
A7) For me,in my space, reenergizing comes.from a refocusing of the goals and my approach to teaching...Spring cleaning for the mind.
Thank you for your awesomeness!
. I am lucky to have great light from high Windows, so we work much of the time with natural light! World of difference!
Going to Curate that idea in the last weeks of the school year. https://t.co/0Eu3vict7M
A7: I'm ready to have our Ss redesign the spaces and materials needed for next year's classes. S developed supply lists.
Thanks for leading an encouragement for innovation tonight ; great to hang with the crew!
FYI Wobble Chairs may be making their appearance as door prizes at DGS institute next year:)
Thank you so much and the crew for inspiring greatness!
Thank you for sailing w/ me! Take a moment to follow someone new. Thanks for letting me host!! https://t.co/IQmpMFRmUF
TY for a great chat on learning spaces. Love gathering ideas for my room next yr. & connecting w/ pirates
Building upon individual experience to gain insight into text. Roll with it! lol
Great chat - among other things, inspired me to ask students to help redesign our library space for next year!
Thank you for joining us! :) Loved all the ideas from the chat tonight!
I never thought to let kids use it! Music stands could work too!
Thanks for leading great chat! Never too late to switch it up!
Started about 4 weeks ago and will continue rest of the year. It's helped to focus and inspire creativity!
Yay! You will have to keep us posted on how it goes!
I wish you all the best April ever. Thank you for creating magic for all your kids. There are so many "favorite teachers" here. Love!
That is a great idea! I am going to implement this at the end of the year!
