#musedchat A1 could you set up an extensive list of rep that students need to go through. Then have them vote on ones they like?
  • jhallma_mused Apr 17 @ 8:14 PM EDT
A1: The Ss at my placement have voted on a piece to play for this coming concert and are rehearsing each other in the process #musedchat

  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:22 PM EDT

  • SamuelFritz Apr 17 @ 8:24 PM EDT
A1: I feel like that is a tough one. If I give them a choice between 2 works with same concepts am I really giving choice? #musedchat

#musedchat sorry guys I'm torn between professional development and my @MapleLeafs tonight lol
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:24 PM EDT

  • theatreducate - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:25 PM EDT

Q1a: Occasionally, I'll give them choices & play/show samples. I do this every year for the seniors' song, & the seniors vote. #musedchat
  • TubaChic Apr 17 @ 8:29 PM EDT
That's like giving my 3 year old a choice between pink coat or blue coat in winter. Both will keep warm-thinks she gets to chose #musedchat
    In reply to @SamuelFritz
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Q2: Anchor standard no. 7 deals w/ analysis. How in-depth do you get in analyzing pieces? #musedchat
  • TubaChic Apr 17 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Do you have a specific form you could share? #musedchat
    In reply to @saxophone73

A1b: We learned 2 spirituals for festival this year, & I provided them with the chance to vote on 1. They chose my favorite! #musedchat
  • TubaChic Apr 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
I like that idea. I'm looking to start building my own spreadsheet data base. Thinking about what info to include. #musedchat
    In reply to @JarvelaMused

2:Used to have ap music theory class for analysis, but don't get to offer it anymore. Try to sneak in analysis during our class #musedchat
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:32 PM EDT
A2: It is really important, listening to music is the most that our students will do. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A2: Depending on the piece, I try to get into the history/social context. We did the Sweeney arr. of Horkstow Grange this year #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A2 (cont) spent some time listening to Grainger's original field recording, and dissecting the story. #musedchat
  • saxophone73 Apr 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
#musedchat LOL old school.Keep a composition book for each year with tunes rehearsed, played. Also have 30 years worth of concert programs
    In reply to @TubaChic
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Q2 side note: the anchor talks about perceiving and analyzing but the individual standards are more explaining connections #musedchat
  • theatreducate - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A2: none, choir is 4-8. Really hard when so many levels represented #musedchat
  • stephensonmused Apr 17 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A2: We analyze form, tonality, meter, difficulty level, text. It's possible to do harmonic (Ex. tonic/dominant), using solfege. #musedchat
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:36 PM EDT
I just said something about it, but the 'analyze' is more of explaining connections to real life, other songs, etc. #musedchat
    In reply to @theatreducate
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:37 PM EDT
How do you discuss form with your students? #musedchat
    In reply to @stephensonmused
  • stephensonmused Apr 17 @ 8:38 PM EDT
Teach the basics, using the form of a pop song (Ex: Verse 1 = A section, Verse 2 = B section). Apply then to standard repertoire. #musedchat
    In reply to @jguarr
  • TubaChic Apr 17 @ 8:38 PM EDT
WOW! That's amazing! I do like old school methods. What other information do you record? #musedchat
    In reply to @saxophone73
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:41 PM EDT
meter, rhythms, key, tonality, dates played, special info, tempo, title (I think that's all the categories) #musedchat
    In reply to @TubaChic
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:42 PM EDT
Q3: Several of the standards relate to creating. How much time in perf. ensembles do we devote to creating? What obstacles exist? #musedchat
  • saxophone73 Apr 17 @ 8:42 PM EDT
#musedchat composer, difficulty level. I find that I have a few favorite marches that i recycle every few years for a new group of students
    In reply to @TubaChic
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A3: You never have enough time to get ready for the performance to begin with! #musedchat
  • WelterChoir Apr 17 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A3: Most choral music does not lend itself to improvisation-however, performing spirituals with some ad lib lets them be creative #musedchat
  • saxophone73 Apr 17 @ 8:44 PM EDT
#musedchat Spend a great deal of time working on improv in jazz band, make each kid compose a 12 bar blues at least once a week. Improving
    In reply to @jguarr
  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:45 PM EDT
A3.1: the important concept that you want Ss to learn? Have them compose to prove their understanding #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:46 PM EDT
Creating doesn't have to be generating a brand new musical idea. Remove expression from a piece, have Ss add their own #musedchat
  • saxophone73 Apr 17 @ 8:46 PM EDT
#musedchat My show choir loves to create with standards. we use Amazing Grace as a warmup and they create harmonies, counter melodies etc
    In reply to @WelterChoir
  • stephensonmused Apr 17 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A3: Admittedly, the toughest standard to meet. I think it takes time for a program to implement. Many prerequisite skills exist. #musedchat
  • SamuelFritz Apr 17 @ 8:46 PM EDT
A2: we complete this before every piece #musedchat
  • jhallma_mused Apr 17 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A3: I try to spend more time than most on developing an artistic understanding of the work and how it applies to the music #musedchat
  • SamuelFritz Apr 17 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A3: I have Ss create practice exercises #musedchat
  • saxophone73 Apr 17 @ 8:47 PM EDT

  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:49 PM EDT
and to add, where is this standard being shown in a concert? So why bother spending the time when a concert is weeks away? #musedchat
    In reply to @stephensonmused
  • TubaChic Apr 17 @ 8:51 PM EDT
A3: Beg. Band we discuss phrasing. Compare a simple melody with different phrases. Apply to current concert music. #musedchat
  • jguarr - Moderator Apr 17 @ 8:51 PM EDT

  • JarvelaMused Apr 17 @ 8:58 PM EDT
right. It can be done, however--how many Ts weight the prestige of playing a Nestico arrangement vs a S created comp? #musedchat

Q1: One of the NCCAS standards deals with repertoire selection. How can we get our Ss more involved with rep selection? #musedchat
