A1: As we welcome the start of 2018, students may have New Year's Resolutions and as a result, require Perseverance to achieve them! Here is a helpful article "New Year's Resolutions for Kids": https://t.co/X6qQJNVTMs#PeekaChat
Q1: The start of the year makes a great time to speak about perseverance. How do you introduce this topic with your students? Does growth mindset play a role? If so, how?
A1: Students with a growth mindset understand their ability to control the outcomes of their actions and behaviour. This increases both their motivation to continue learning and persistence in overcoming obstacles. #PeekaChat#SEL
#growthmindset is SO vital to classroom culture and should be modeled daily through your actions as the teacher // start off by not setting the goal for “perfection”, but rather stress the importance of reflection and modification for future work :) #Peekachat

A1 picture books & read alouds, students can discuss these traits in characters, then begin applying/connecting these traits to real world examples #Peekachat
A1: We have a classroom meeting called "Marble Theory" where we learn that we're all equally able, but have our skills & talents distributed differently. By working hard/practicing, we get better/stronger, adding more marbles to the skill! #Peekachat
Excerpt from #LearnLAP
A1: We started a gratitude journal that includes setting a goal for the next day. We talk about short & long term goals. We talk about what happens when you don't meet your goal & sticking w/ it. I set my own goals too & they see me fail at my goals and persevere. #Peekachat
Justin Hutcherson, Assistant Principal, Tampa, FL. #Peekachat A1, I think goal setting is critical at the first of the year. We did growth mindset last year and this year we are an @EnergyBusSchool

A1 - I share LOTS of mini-lessons with my kiddos throughout the year on Growth Mindset, Grit, Perseverance, etc. Here are several - feel free to use them yourself! :) https://t.co/1vDDEaf3SW#Peekachat
A2: The "My Goal Contract" in our Perseverance unit is great for helping students set goals, as well as the steps they must persevere through to reach them! #PeekaChat#SEL
A1 I try to help by setting goals with my students and following through to help them reach their goals. We also hold class meetings when we can and I encourage Ss to seek advice from their classmates. #Peekachat
Love how the whole team is on board with the same plan! That’s really important as well, and often can be overlooked! School climate / culture should be just as important as individual classroom culture! #Peekachat
A2: We use a Whole Brain Teaching callout, "We don't quit, we've got grit!" I also have been known to call out, "Let's struggle!" To which the Ss respond, "Let's learn!" #PeekaChat
A2 We build perseverance by building support; showing Ss that we are there for them. We expect them to do the best they can, but when they need us, we are there #PeekaChat

A1. Beginning of year we read the Emperor Moth. It’s about a moth who was helped out of its cocoon and died. We discuss moths need to struggle out of cocoon and we want our students to struggle and persevere. We often refer back to the Emperor Moth through year #Peekachat
A2: One of the things that I've focused on is just demystifying the word perseverance. Making it part of our every day conversations. The first time I heard another student encourage a peer to persevere was amazing. Sometimes they even remind me to persevere! #Peekachat

The guidance counselor and I work to talk with the Ss about their frustrations or struggles and give them strategies to help. As the year progresses, we have them guide us on how we can help them. #Peekachat
A2: #PeekaChat I will use an example as a mom; I have a 10 year old son-I use his love of basketball to teach grit, growth mindset & setting goals (& celebrating them)...we talk about season goals, personal goals-the journey & the end
A3: When challenges pop up, students may get frustrated and want to just give up. At @Peekapak, in our story "Sounds of Music" Ss learn from Cody's experience that to reach a goal often takes practice and hard work! #PeekaChat#SEL
A3 - My students biggest struggle with regard to perseverance isn't frustration with errors/perfection, but rather with spending more time on something they think they're done with. I work hard to teach them that learning is a cyclical process that never really ends! #Peekachat
A3, I think the biggest challenge is students not believing that they can be successful. Teachers, support staff, administration have to be their biggest fans! #Peekachat
A3 Sometimes they begin comparing themselves to others instead of comparing themselves to who they were yesterday. Mindset-it’s all about improving & moving forward #Peekachat
That's the key for me...with our students connecting to their passions to cultivate perseverance or kindness or any #SEL topic is the way you make it reach their minds and heart (transformational) #PeekaChat
A3: I think my kids' struggle is similar to my own with perseverance. I want to get it right and get it done and when it is a struggle or it is taking forever I get frustrated. Genuine listening & encouragement works but don't fake cheerlead me or my kids! #Peekachat
A3: I believe students learn early to avoid mistakes so they shy away from risk taking or attempt to coast by/fall through the cracks. I try to create a loving, safe learning environment where students can try things without fear of ridicule if they get it "wrong". #Peekachat
A3: I find that GATE students struggle with perfectionism, and may want to abandon a task or project if they are not certain it will be perfect. One thing I have done is share books, articles and videos, etc about some of the best inventions that came from mistakes! #peekachat
A3. The struggle I see is with confidence whether under or over. Ss that don't have the confidence, will not take a chance and try, while those who are over, will just jump in without regard for the process. LOL my strategy...#workInProgress#Peekachat
If you're not familiar with @Peekapak - please check them out! My 5th grade students use their books & lessons to teach our kindergartners Social-Emotional Skills once each month & both classes LOVE these lessons! Such a positive experience for all! #Peekachat
A3: I have shared with students personal anecdotes about times I wish I had persevered, or a time it really turned out well because I did! Those personal connections with the kids go so far! #peekachat
A3: In my experience teaching at the middle school level, I saw the struggle with journey-that's why you have to allow them in the driver's seat to set small goals & celebrate🎈 growth #PeekaChat#JoyfulSchools#SEL
A4: We find Ss are 'getting it' when they demonstrate a different attitude to challenges. Instead of giving up, they re-adjust their attitude and find other ways to achieve their goals. #PeekaChat#SEL
Q4: Less tears, less "I'm done!", more revisions, more edits, more methods in problem solving (both real life and in math class), more confidence. #Peekachat
A3: We also have a free eBook to do a read aloud on this topic you can access as a free user :) https://t.co/AFLV64kcZe (would love to hear what you and your students think!) #Peekachat

A4 Rise in confidence in the process, stepping up to help their classmates, being able to explain the what's, why's, and hows, and questioning. #Peekachat
A4: I love when my Ss are playing an online review game like @quizizz and I see the fist pumps in the air. They aren’t as worried about final score as they celebrate each correct answer. #Peekachat
A4 In our classroom, we focus on 34 different "21st Century Skills" & I created a Report Card w/indicators for each skill that I give to my students each trimester. I explain about it in detail in "Learn Like a PIRATE." Here is that report card: https://t.co/Q3o8VxFhey#Peekachat
A4, it is amazing to see when the light bulb comes on and bright smiles on their faces when they overcome something they have been preserving at for a long time. It makes them hungry for more. #Peekachat
Thanks everyone for the great discussion tonight for #Peekachat - I can't believe 30 mins flew by so quickly! Hope you can join us next month on Feb 13th to discuss Teamwork :)
A3 I love Miley Cyrus’s song “The Climb” We watch her video when we get stuck. Discussing that I learn something new everyday let’s them know that learning is a continuous process. I am also the volleyball coach and relate how grit is used with my team #Peekachat
