Q1: The start of the year makes a great time to speak about perseverance. How do you introduce this topic with your students? Does growth mindset play a role? If so, how?
  • Peekapak - Moderator Jan 9 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1: Students with a growth mindset understand their ability to control the outcomes of their actions and behaviour. This increases both their motivation to continue learning and persistence in overcoming obstacles. #PeekaChat #SEL
  • PledgeCents Jan 9 @ 9:07 PM EST
#growthmindset is SO vital to classroom culture and should be modeled daily through your actions as the teacher // start off by not setting the goal for “perfection”, but rather stress the importance of reflection and modification for future work :) #Peekachat

  • techteach4kids Jan 9 @ 9:15 PM EST
A2: One of the things that I've focused on is just demystifying the word perseverance. Making it part of our every day conversations. The first time I heard another student encourage a peer to persevere was amazing. Sometimes they even remind me to persevere! #Peekachat
  • PledgeCents Jan 9 @ 9:15 PM EST
This is a great way to start the conversation at the beginning of the year, and to give students a concrete reference!! #Peekachat

  • Justin1Hutch Jan 9 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2, conduct data conferences with students, have them set goals of where they want to get to. Praise them when thwy reach it. #Peekachat

A3: When challenges pop up, students may get frustrated and want to just give up. At @Peekapak, in our story "Sounds of Music" Ss learn from Cody's experience that to reach a goal often takes practice and hard work! #PeekaChat #SEL
  • plnaugle - Moderator Jan 9 @ 9:18 PM EST
    A3: Celebrate small successes! #Peekachat
  • PaulSolarz - Moderator Jan 9 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3 - My students biggest struggle with regard to perseverance isn't frustration with errors/perfection, but rather with spending more time on something they think they're done with. I work hard to teach them that learning is a cyclical process that never really ends! #Peekachat
  • Justin1Hutch Jan 9 @ 9:19 PM EST
A3, I think the biggest challenge is students not believing that they can be successful. Teachers, support staff, administration have to be their biggest fans! #Peekachat
  • mitchell_tramit Jan 9 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 Sometimes they begin comparing themselves to others instead of comparing themselves to who they were yesterday. Mindset-it’s all about improving & moving forward #Peekachat

That's the key for me...with our students connecting to their passions to cultivate perseverance or kindness or any #SEL topic is the way you make it reach their minds and heart (transformational) #PeekaChat
    In reply to @Peekapak
  • ConnieLund25 Jan 9 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3 Giving up too soon. They want everything to come to them quickly and easily. Don’t just give them the answers, but guide them #Peekachat
  • techteach4kids Jan 9 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: I think my kids' struggle is similar to my own with perseverance. I want to get it right and get it done and when it is a struggle or it is taking forever I get frustrated. Genuine listening & encouragement works but don't fake cheerlead me or my kids! #Peekachat

A3: I believe students learn early to avoid mistakes so they shy away from risk taking or attempt to coast by/fall through the cracks. I try to create a loving, safe learning environment where students can try things without fear of ridicule if they get it "wrong". #Peekachat
  • Allison_LaFalce Jan 9 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: I find that GATE students struggle with perfectionism, and may want to abandon a task or project if they are not certain it will be perfect. One thing I have done is share books, articles and videos, etc about some of the best inventions that came from mistakes! #peekachat
  • 4XSoccermom Jan 9 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3. The struggle I see is with confidence whether under or over. Ss that don't have the confidence, will not take a chance and try, while those who are over, will just jump in without regard for the process. LOL my strategy...#workInProgress #Peekachat

  • OrganicLeaderVB Jan 9 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: In my experience teaching at the middle school level, I saw the struggle with journey-that's why you have to allow them in the driver's seat to set small goals & celebrate🎈 growth #PeekaChat #JoyfulSchools #SEL
