Does creating a culture of assessment with students support their success as learners? If so, how can we foster it? What's the impact?

Good Morning #bfc530 Kevin, 7th Grade History Teacher from NW NJ. I know we discussed field trips yesterday, but off to the Bronx Zoo on one today. Relaxing trip, seeing animals, getting to know a small group of kids a bit better.

Creating a culture of learning helps deepen understanding in the classroom! Assessment, if done & used correctly can help create such a culture. Assessment that provides feedback for growth & progress toward mastery works NOT assessment that is arbitrary! #BFC530
Thanks V. When my daughters were in preschool, my wife would meet us there and they would join our group. Remember my oldest being so excited watching the camel rides. #bfc530
Happy Tuesday #bfc530! This is my last week with kids and I'm peering at their little faces a little more intently lately. Will miss those little buggers over summer!
Creating a culture where assessment is a piece of the whole picture *can* support S success if the assessment is used to guide instruction and set goals. #bfc530#bepurposeful
A culture of assessment sounds clinical to me, like a constant diagnostic reflection, and I’m not certain there’s joy and curiosity present if assessment is my culture. Yes, I want students to self assess, but not obsess. #bfc530

I hope we don't have a culture of assessment.
I want a culture of learning...of risk-taking....of innovation...of joy.
Assessment is a piece of the academic pie. When purposeful, it is profound.

#bfc530 We need to recognize #students as complete people, with unique interests, strengths, goals, fears, and all the rest. We cannot let #students be defined by their test scores.
Our current culture of assessment doesn't seem to fit with what students will experience in real life. Useless they become Olympic athletes, they won't often spend a year working toward a single task that determines their success or failure. #bfc530
We need to shift the focus to the process rather than the product. It’s not about a score on a specific assessment- it’s about the learning along the way. Assessment itself is not a negative thing, it’s when we allow it to become THE thing. #BFC530
I think this depends upon how ass't is addressed. Important to focus on their own personal gains and growth, w ass't as a chance to show what they know. Also frequent formative checks throughout the learning ensures we as Ts are responsive. #bfc530

Wow. I read it as culture of student voice about what assessment looks like. Student voice and choice is the ideal. Needs to start in lower grades and travel with students through grade 12. But then what happens? Big question today. #bfc530
We want to focus on how each student learns and it is okay to not be successful as long as you can gain from the experience. Our Learning from Mistakes page https://t.co/Hk0cJhB3b1 Our Assessment page https://t.co/OEDdXI9tqz#bfc530
I'd say the writing process comes closer to a real world experience... work toward a goal, get feedback, refine, get closer to the goal, collaborate, get closer to the goal... #bfc530

Critically overlooked in any discussion on assessment is often it’s use. Is it used by the teacher to inform and when necessary adjust instructional practice OR is it used merely to assign a grade? Do students receive meaningful, descriptive feedback or ✅ or ❌? #BFC530
Had my students assess me yesterday through a Google Form. The response that made me shake my head on ways I could improve my teaching "Give more notes" I wish Ss didnt think only notes=learning #bfc530
We need to strive for a culture where students understand and appreciate that assessment is a feedback tool to help them reflect and readjust before moving forward. Assessment is not the end. #vted#bfc530
Yes and no! In New South Wales our syllabus documents have Assessment: As, Of and For Learning, so yes but it needs to be planned & thought through measuring outcomes. That said it is possible to over assess. #bfc530
I believe the greater emphasis we put on formative assessment (assessment for and as learning), the greater the levels of success for our students...it’s not all about the grade...let’s change such cultural thinking! #bfc530

I want students to think, I want them to explore, I want them to discuss, I want them to see learning about their world is fun. Sometimes assessments get in the way of that. #bfc530
Great point! The underlying culture should be creativity and compassion as we assess students’ progress. Assessment is important but is not my ultimate goal. Teaching humans is more than teaching content #bfc530#KidsDeserveIt

When Ss learn to self-assess they become more independent learners. Self-assessment moves Ss away from the "why did the T give me that grade?" mentality to "this is where I'm at. How can I improve?" #bfc530
If I dont look them over the day I have them submit it, I'll forget. Received some great feedback both in encouragement & ways I could improve things #bfc530
Especially when so many teachers feel the same. Institutional change happens very slowly but I believe that it will happen as a result of great educators connect & take risks #bfc530
A graduate-style writing workshop seems to fit best for my HS students. It’s an iterative environment with a built in feedback collective, and it’s all based on individual writing goals. #bfc530
If you have not seen "Becoming Bulletproof"... It is a must see about a group of incredible people making an incredible story! Differentiation in practice to the max! #tlap#LeadFromWithin#bfc530https://t.co/ypgIpHwuy9
The state mandates 13 days of testing, the district mandates 11 days of testing, and I'm supposed to pre/post assess students to drive instruction??? I'd say this is a culture of assessment that students, teachers, parents, and building administrators are fed up with. #bfc530
Hello friends and happy Tuesday! Every moment provides a learning opportunity, grab on and go with it! Make the most of today tribe 😊 #bfc530#kidsdeserveit
I don't want a culture of assessment necessarily. Assessment is a tool, but the more students are involved in their own assessment (incl development sometimes), the more positive the culture.
They should know the bar they are being held to...and know how to achieve it.
#bfc530
A culture of meaningful, informative, ongoing assessment that allows teachers and students know what needs to be learned and the pacing at which it needs to happen through timely feedback will support success. Tests that do not inform instruction do not help. #bfc530

Agree! I don't think standardized testing has anything to do with real education. Luckily we don't have much in the Dom Rep where I live, & the ones we do have, our school tries to ignore so that they don't dumb down our teaching. #bfc530
Absolutely! To support students focus on, and engage in the process, we need to tool them with the ability to use/set goals, self-monitor, reflect, adjust, etc...all tools related to assessment FOR and AS, to ensure their will progress on their learning journey. #bfc530
Yes. If we think of it as a way to inform our teaching so we #TeachBetter and support our ss better then we are doing our job. It hurts me when 1st graders ask if something they are doing is a test. I need to make sure I am teaching them correctly. #bfc530
Important for me is that we distinguish assessment For, As & OF. Formative FOR & AS learning are essential to the process of learning. I want my Ss to feel comfortable with, & use formative assess as tools in the metacognitive process of monitoring, reflecting, adjusting. #bfc530
