#DITCHbook was created by Ditch That Textbook author Matt Miller. The chat focuses on innovative teaching ideas and disrupting standard textbook education.
Heeeeey, #ditchbook! I'm Evan Mosier, a Technology Integrationist Lead Teacher from Davenport, IA joining you this evening. Excited to learn A LOT more about #hyperdocs and their impact on the classroom! Plus, it's always awesome when it's moderated by @SEANJFAHEY and @KarlyMoura
Hey #DitchBook - Lisa, teacher & TOSA from Northern Ca - it has been a while! But it is summer :) So a bit more free time! Looking forward to chatting - especially #HyperDocs
Hello all! I’m Shannon, English teacher (grades 6-12), ditching from Republic, MI.
Honestly, I’ve never used a HyperDoc EVER, so I’m mostly here to creep and see what I can nab from y’all. #DitchBook
Thanks bud! To borrow from your partner in crime @ShakeUpLearning, dare I say I'm super excited for the new position? And that fact I submitted my #GoogleCertifiedTrainer application today! #ditchbook
Hi! Jennifer Wolfe from nor CA here - teaching AVID 8 and 9, Reading and moving from ELA 8 to 7 next year! Oh - did I mention I'm #hyperdocobsessed? #ditchbook
A1: A hyperdoc is a document with hyperlinks to mutiple forms of media, each one of which is designed with several questions and different DOK levels. #ditchbook
A1 A #hyperdoc IS a multimedia way to access content and concepts on a higher, deeper level that you could NOT do without technology. It is NOT a GDoc or GSlideDeck with links and worksheets. #DitchBook
A1. A hyperdoc is something that increases work flow and teaching skills and strategies beyond what seems possible. You can dig deep and incorporate many digital tools. It is not a worksheet. #ditchbook
Nice! The whole process for #GoogleCertifiedTrainer wasn't bad, until the video, and that wasn't bad except for the fact that it is ridiculously hard to narrow down what you want to say in 3 minuntes, at least for me! #ditchbook

A1: HyperDocs- interactive tool that allows for a prepackaged yet innovative blended learning experience. It can be so powerful when it allows choice and should include the 4Cs. #Ditchbook#HyperDocs
A1- A hyperdoc is a tool that allows students to learn, explore, collaborate and create. It is a pathway to learning. It is NOT a modified worksheet or busy work #DitchBook
A1 A hyperdoc is a doc that is more personalized to students and gives them room to explore content that can often also be connected with their own personal interests #ditchbook
A1: to me a hyperdoc is a journey fo a student. A way to lead Ss through a lesson and allow them create, collaborate and communicate. A hyperdoc is not a bunch of links with questions. #DitchBook
I explain it to people as an updated version of a webquest. It's purpose it to promote critical thinking and not just be a digital worksheet with links. #ditchbook
In reply to
@SEANJFAHEY, @KarlyMoura, @jmattmiller
I had to take it twice and flunked both times...cuz I had mom stuff to do...but I did learn a lot and their book and website is soooo useful! #DitchBook
A1 Here's my understanding:
What it is: An interactive lesson plan involving exploration and deeper learning
What it's not: A worksheet with links #ditchbook
A1: It is NOT a Doc with links on it, but rather a way for teachers to engage students in the learning process. I need more practice creating these things! My experience is limited! I think they carry a lot of positive in the classroom #HyperDocs#ditchbook
I get that! It can be intimidating. @SEANJFAHEY and I are here to answer any questions or walk you through any parts! We are just a DM away =) #ditchbook
#ditchbook A2) As a person who delivers professional learning on a regular basis, we use them to instruct adult learners! We also use MMTS frequently when a whole HyperDoc isn't needed.
A2. I hated our reading program. BAM I said it! So I made #hyperdocs for several of the stories in the anthology that freed me up to run lit circles. Ss love the challenges that await them. They engage, explore, reflect, extend! #ditchbook
A1 A #hyperdoc is a brilliant way of thinking through a lesson using sound educational pedagogy, rolling in the best #edtech and making students THINK, CREATE, and visualize their thinking #ditchbook
A2: I want to encourage independent student work and to makje the lesson much nmore dynamic that any textbook could ever be. I try to use them when there isn't a solid, pedaogically proven way to address a topic. #ditchbook
#ditchbook A2 part 2) We create them in a Doc often, but I REALLY like them in a Slide deck. It keeps me on track when I plan PD for adults to make sure I'm giving them more time to create and explore than sit and listen!
A1. I had a teacher say, “a hyperdoc is a Google doc with links.” NOOOOO! A hyperdoc offers student choice, it scaffolds the learning and embraces the content in smaller chunks. Students CREATE, THINK, DISCUSS, and COLLABORATE with Hyperdocs. Hyperdocs are amazing. #DitchBook
Craig, RTI Facilitator from Texas joining in late after putting kids to bed from a busy day. 10 year anniversary, softball award ceremony, then finish it off with ice cream! #DitchBook
A2: Haven't been in a classroom per se in a couple of years. I did aprimitive form of #hyperdocs in history class to get Ss more involved with material and to work with one another, as I used them in group activities, looking forward to incorporating more in new gig #ditchbook
A2: I use hyperdocs to provide student choice, to allow students to use the 4 C’s, to free me up so I can work with small groups/1 on 1 and provide meaningful feedback #DitchBook
Truth as with everything, it is in the design. With Google Apps and integrations, there are so many more options and opportunities to make the most of it! #Ditchbook#hyperdocs
A2 I incorporate #hyperdocs to help add structure to units - novels, lit units, short courses of study... to engage my audience, encourage them to think beyond the essential questions and make their thinking visible...any time I can! #ditchbook
HyperDocs literally changed my teaching life. The powerful engagement and rich pedagogy that come with incorporating a well-planned out HyperDoc makes traditional stand & deliver teaching very apparently insufficient. Yeah, I said it. #ditchbook
A2- My HyperDocs have morphed over the year. Creating different learning paths for differentiation. I've encorporated more of the 4 C's, combinging it with @ShakeUpLearning Choice Boards. Adding different ideas from #@GTeacherTribe adds to it! #DitchBook
A2: Hyperdocs are a great way to provide students with an opportunity to choose how they will show learning and the approach to the content. HDs allow teachers more opportunity to “guide on the side.” #Ditchbook#HyperDocs
A2: I have used #hyperdocs as self-guided lessons when I wasn't able to be there. But I want to start using them more as individualized learning experiences with choice menus. #DitchBook

I already have some ideas turning, #hyperdocs are great for all kids, but especially those that have different learning styles and have accommodations #ditchbook
Yep. I agree. HyperDocs have made me into a lesson designer. Creating them has given me focus and the courage to branch out and utilize the technology available to me. #ditchbook

A2. I love how #hyperdocs can be used across the content area. At elementary level they need to be modeled but once the Ss get going they dive in #ditchbook
A2. I hated our reading program. BAM I said it! So I made #hyperdocs for several of the stories in the anthology that freed me up to run lit circles. Ss love the challenges that await them. They engage, explore, reflect, extend! #ditchbook
Saaay whaaaat?! The #HyperDocs video from the #DitchSummit is back open for one week?! Amazing!!! Check it out! I know I will be for a refresher! #ditchbook
A2: making a bunch for our virtual Google training course we are offering through Classroom over the summer! A new leap forward for us and very excited to see how Ts like new concept of self-directed Pd #DitchBook#GoogleET
A2:
How? - When learning new content! Hyperdocs have taken the place of my lecture & assigned reading.
Why? - Student choice, student voice, student empowerment. Students work at their own pace. I can make my own videos and Ss watch those with the power of pause.
#DitchBook
A2 For younger learners hyperdocs are a great way to learn digital skills as well. Tutorials on how to navigate certain aspects on Slides, Sheets, etc. can be put in along with roads to inquiry, etc. #ditchbook
Here's a collection of #HyperDocs you can explore>make a copy>edit>revise for your students. https://t.co/it5VP9tiEI … Lessons are meant to be personalized when shared to fit class needs #ditchbook
Ummm... I don't want to freak anyone out but JAKE MILLER is here too!!!!!!
His GIFS are #HyperDoc resource GOLD. So many great ideas for getting creative or incorporating how-tos for your students!
#ditchbook
A3: For me, a HyperDoc isn't really a HyperDoc until it has the "what are the students going to DO with the learning" Apply and Share pieces integrated into it. Until then it falls dangerously close to becoming just a digital worksheet. #ditchbook
I think allowing students to EXPLORE provided content is important. This allows students to tap into their natural curiosity, build background knowledge and make connections. #hyperdocs#ditchbook
A3: creating something from the lesson and sharing to an authentic audience, CHOICE! This is why the multi media text set (aka choice board) is a key element. #ditchbook
Here's my "Google Genius" slide deck ...
It's a #hyperdocs-ish self-paced lesson on how to use Google tools in innovative ways in the classroom!

As you create or remix a #HyperDoc 💡 be sure that it:
✅ Meets the lesson's 🎯objective
✅ Meets needs of your 🤔 learners
✅ Incorporates the 4Cs
✅ Includes voice and choice
✅ Is packaged to 💥 engage your students

A3 I love to incorporate non-tech elements...like at a certain point, the kids have to add their thoughts or responses to the group’s chart paper, then go back to the #Hyperdoc for the next step...my kids need to move! #DitchBook
A3. I love having Ss synthesize, write, and think BIG. I try to come up with tasks for them that break them out of a silo. I also have Ss collaborate on parts of the #hyperdocs#ditchbook
Ben, you’re right! But they’re so so so much more. You’re going to love hyperdocs. Here is a #Ditchbook padlet with tons of FREE hyperdocs on it! :) https://t.co/bmZ9NdZ9if
A3: For me, thoe higher levels of thinking need to be a part of it, the simple low levels of content knowledge can be done on a worksheet, and we all know how we feel about those things... #ditchbook#9letterswearword

A second must have in any #hyperdoc is providing ways for Ss to APPLY their new found knowledge & understanding. This is an essential step to move kids from consumers to creators! #ditchbook
A3 Engage - gotta hook 'em. Explore - gotta give them choices. I should say the apply, too - but I REALLY love the reflection. That's where I get my best 'aha' moments - and so do the students! #ditchbook
FYI, #DitchBook peeps ...
If you can't keep up with the pace of this chat, don't worry ...

Stay tuned for it! #DitchBook
Important to differentiate between Multimedia Text Sets/Choice Boards and #HyperDocs MMTS is the explore portion of a lesson. A HyperDoc goes beyond including the apply, share, reflect part of the lesson design. #ditchbook
A3 I love to incorporate non-tech elements...like at a certain point, the kids have to add their thoughts or responses to the group’s chart paper, then go back to the #Hyperdoc for the next step...my kids need to move! #DitchBook
A3: I almost always have a padlet for the students to post their creations on. This allows for their classmates to see the creations and comment easily.
@Screencastify is also a must have - for Ts and Ss! #DitchBook#HyperDocs
I am thinking of using screencastify to record my 'lectures' in small chunks so I can put those into a #Hyperdoc.... that's fine right? There would be a response opportunity too of course (I just learned to use Google Question today in fact). #DitchBook
A3 I love to incorporate non-tech elements...like at a certain point, the kids have to add their thoughts or responses to the group’s chart paper, then go back to the #Hyperdoc for the next step...my kids need to move! #DitchBook
A3: While the design can vary, great elements include engaging or peeking interest, exploring content, applying, reflection, and sharing. I always try to start with objective and start with a clear idea of what the end desire is- backward design #Ditchbook#HyperDocs
A3: I almost always have a padlet for the students to post their creations on. This allows for their classmates to see the creations and comment easily.
@Screencastify is also a must have - for Ts and Ss! #DitchBook#HyperDocs
Student voice: I try to always have a whole-class Google Doc or some sort of public share (used to use Padlet, but no more) for students to see their classmates' responses as well as share their own voice. Way more equity of voice than raising hands & share out 1 by 1 #ditchbook
Thanks... last year there were too many other changes and new "things" for me to really get into #HyperDocs but may take you up on it going forward #ditchbook
A2: I use #HyperDocs to encourage Ss to become ind learners, to spend more time with individual Ss, to personalize instruction, to have more flexibility - can change things up with a click of a button! HyperDocs provide deep, rich, memorable learning experiences #DitchBook
Offering students choices of the tools they use to create ...
Using choice boards for multiple creation opportunities ...
Helping them choose topics they love that fit the theme of the lesson ... #DitchBook
So I worked on this a little last year with the goal to make units. I wasn't pleased with my first result, but have been reflecting. This idea is solid and I think it will work. #DitchBook
I offered to do screencastify for my lectures this past year...Ss begged me not to do it, saying they liked the little tidbits of history and stories I include in short interactive lectures...#ditchbook

And now we discover that my son peed on the floor and I get to clean it up. Maybe participating in #ditchbook tonight was not in the cards for me. #parentlife
A4: Nothing much to share since I've been out of the classroom and haven't been able to dive and create, but in my experience, try something and go, if it's terrible, try again! #ditchbook
#ditchbook A3) Sharing - you have to have that piece in there. It's what make the #hyperdoc dynamic. The ability for students to learn from each other is immense!
A3 I haven’t made one (sad, I know), but I would want variety. Maybe a video tutorial, excerpt, oral response/video, create a slide, make a Kahoot based on what you learned, etc.
Am I on the right track?
#ditchbook
Really? My students preferred the @Screencastify versions so they could pause and rewind when needed. I still do mini-lessons with the students were I tell stories and make connections with them. #DitchBook#HyperDocs

@teachermike72, @DeanaElmore, @Hell2Teach, @Screencastify
I teach math and have used existing videos (Kahn Academy, etc.), but I've found my students also like having short clips made by me. They feel like I'm "teaching" :-) #DitchBook
YUP! And that is why you teach them how to do it meaningfully. And let them know ALL about revision history =)
Start small with one comment per person. #ditchbook
A4 Just DO it! Look at samples from other grades/courses...take what you like, modify, and then you'll see how #hyperdocs work best for you. Oh - and Take the #hyperdoc class... with @lhighfill#ditchbook
I think the point they were making was that they couldn't really interact with a video recording or screencast the way they could with me being in the room. #ditchbook
In reply to
@Stella_Pollard, @DeanaElmore, @Hell2Teach, @Screencastify
My kids told me the same thing...but why can't we incorporate our anecdotes and bad jokes and fun facts into the recording? That doesn't mean you don't have a killer discussion the next day...all tech all the time isn't good either. Mix it up! #DitchBook
In reply to
@teachermike72, @DeanaElmore, @Stella_Pollard
Yes! #hyperdocs don’t need to be 100 digital. If the best tool or routine is paper or hands on manipulatives put that in your hyperdoc to stop and complete the that task. #Ditchbook
A3 I love to incorporate non-tech elements...like at a certain point, the kids have to add their thoughts or responses to the group’s chart paper, then go back to the #Hyperdoc for the next step...my kids need to move! #DitchBook
A4: Try one lesson that you like doing and give it an update....try packaging it as a HyperDoc. Here are templates to get started- https://t.co/L06mTTgMrA#ditchbook
And maybe we can add gamifcation elements too, like finished with the project, try this challenge, for 100XP, finished with that, help a classmate finish for 50XP #ditchbook
I love https://t.co/uiwi40uhKT for the templates, shared files, and advice. I like the engage, explore, explain, apply, extend model. Helps me organize the info and helps guide the Ss. #ditchbook
A4: This is from the #HyperDoc + #Ditchbook family… A Padlet full of T created Hyperdocs (all subjects, all grades) use CTRL + F short cut to look for a certain topic. https://t.co/bmZ9NdZ9if
My best advice as an "experienced" HyperDoc'er is to just jump in & go for it! It's a process you will continue to refine and improve upon. Oh, and if you can, sign up for the HyperDoc online boot camp when it's being offered! #ditchbook
Well, the argument they made was that you can't interact with a screencast or a video the same way you can with a live teacher and live classmates. Plus, what if the Ss don't bother watching the screencast or can't because of work etc? #ditchbook
In reply to
@Hell2Teach, @DeanaElmore, @Stella_Pollard
A4: Pick ed tech tools that engage the learner and fit the learning. Whenever I learn about a new tool I align it with the parts of the #hyperdoc cycle and record it here: https://t.co/atbxNuYGOC#ditchbook
Perfection will never come #justshipit
I’ve had many times where I would update the #hyperdoc for next time to improve it while Ss are still working #Ditchbook
