Check out this new book co-authored by @pammoran "Timeless Learning: How Imagination, Observation, and Zero-Based Thinking Change Schools" https://t.co/niSHR3slR5#Satchat
A1: Encouraging a culture of creativity, fosters a #growthmindset in students, it removes constraints & facilitates exploration, experimentation and learning through successes and failures 😊 #satchat
A1) Est a culture of creativity allows all Ss to feel successful and to take ownership of their education. All Ss can find a niche. Success = motivation to learn! #satchat
A1: I think that encouraging a culture of creativity allows Ss to be more in tune with themselves, creates overall awareness, gives them better skills in differentiating one item from another, and helps them to think more abstractly #satchat
A1: Fosters risk taking! Risks are key to creativity & we must be willing to make mistakes, learn from them & try again. This is equally important for adults & kids! #satchat
A1 Taking a creative approach means making ourselves vulnerable: we’re doing something in a different way from what’s expected and might judge ourselves or fear judgment from others. A supportive culture helps. #satchat
A1 - Creativity allows for excitement, fun, engagement and the ability to think differently. Creating a culture of creativity would positively change the learning environment. #satchat
A1) It is important to create a culture of creativity, because it allows adults and students a place & space to be free & brilliant. Allows individuals to be themselves & innovative. #satchat
A1: Fosters risk taking! Risks are key to creativity & we must be willing to make mistakes, learn from them & try again. This is equally important for adults & kids! #satchat
A1: because human creativity is natural, but as a society we try and “educate it out” of children in order to create a more conforming society. Just finished @CarlaShalaby “Troublemakers” and this was a takeaway #satchat
A1: Creativity is associated with risk taking, in education we want both Ss and Ts taking risks to learn and try new things. It is the best way to grow and evolve. It’s important for Ss to know it’s good to think “outside the box” and be different. #satchat
A1: to remove ourselves from the Industrial Revolution vibe in education. Let Ss & Ts learn by doing instead of learn by being told what to learn #satchat
Good morning friends from the craziest wet central Va summer I’ve seen - tornadoes, floods, monsoon afternoons and vegetation that grows inches at at time #satchat
#SatChat A1a Methinks the opposite of creativity is apathy. Why would we or our organization choose apathy over creativity? So there’s that. Creativity is us speaking our best voice. We’re engaged if our ideas are given a space to come out and play.
A1: With creativity comes critical thinking. Ss practice listening to others & learn to communicate about their ideas. These skills are important prep for future jobs. #satchat
A1: Creativity is the foundation for innovation. It’s critical to not only our economicfuturr but also to our students abilities to fix all the problems we all created in the world! #STEM#4Cs#satchat
A1: As we prepare students to be future ready, the skills that are considered important are shifting quickly. Creativity is expected to be in the top 3 by 2020. #satchat
A1 Creativity is the space where our Ss, Ts, and admin are able to really think and grow. This is where our groundbreaking ideas will come from. #satchat#FutureReady@kheiladunkerly
A1: It’s important to create a culture of creativity because every student and every teacher possess unique passions that must be unleashed. Education always environments must provide opportunities for creative juices to flow consistently #satchat
#satchat
Attention Trump Supporters!
Trump’s words and actions display a vile cruel hateful and ignorant POTUS.
Know that if you still support him, you are a Racist, Bigot, and Ignorant.
Understand it and live with this immoral disgrace now and afterwards.
A1 For years, we used to be okay with people saying "I am not creative." We are ALL creative. Creativity is a process that can be learned and is vital to problem solving. We need to model and teach the creative process for our students.
#SATChat
A1 Creativity helps educators continue to grow and develop their skill set. Relevance is always a big factor when it comes to education, do you meet the needs of 21st century students? #satchat
A1: Creativity boosts engagement and allows Ss to think differently about problems. The combination of these two things leads to student empowerment. #satchat
Agreed! I’m tired of hearing our kids are creative at an early age and “we” force it out of them as they get older. Why do we keep doing this? #SatChat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @kheiladunkerly, @CarlaShalaby
Creativity is a soft skill that can be developed. It doesn’t get attention in education circles because it’s hard to measure or show on a test score. #satchat
A1: along with creating a culture for creativity comes student voice, choice and ownership. With that comes way more than the objectives of a lesson can bullet point. That is powerful learning that lasts beyond the school day/year #satchat
A1: A lot of research indicates that our workforce will need to have the ability to be creative/innovative in addition to the foundation of knowledge. We not only need to know how to do something, but also be creative in the way it is implementaed to solve problems. #satchat
A1 Brene Brown’s research tells us we are naturally creative beings defined uniquely by our strengths and who we are. The inability to be creative is not benign. It is in our nature. Without the opportunity to do so we begin to live our strengths in an unhealthy way #satchat
A1 Good lessons include need, novelty, meaning and emotion. All equally important but it’s the novelty that keeps us listening, watching and learning #satchat
A1: As we prepare students to be future ready, the skills that are considered important are shifting quickly. Creativity is expected to be in the top 3 by 2020. #satchat

Creating a culture of creativity requires the opportunity to be creative ... which is more than giving a kid 6 straws, 8 pipe cleaners, 2 paper plates, and a glue stick with the instructions make a _____.
#satchat
A1 if creativity is at the forefront at the beginning of school, it sets the tone for how the year will go. Whether the risks are great or small, Ts and Ss will know it’s ok to take a chance. #satchat#creativity#change
A1 For years, we used to be okay with people saying "I am not creative." We are ALL creative. Creativity is a process that can be learned and is vital to problem solving. We need to model and teach the creative process for our students.

A1) Developing a culture of creativity in our schools means that we value student innovation and foster their ability to bring what’s only been in their imagination to life! #satchat
A1) Creativity - in my experience - does tend to be squashed as Ss get older. Intermediate + middle + high schools are on the path to improving this; still a ways to go! #satchat
In reply to
@bobby__dodd, @3_DLeadership, @kheiladunkerly, @CarlaShalaby
So much of our basic knowledge is carried around in our pockets everyday. This gives us lots more time to build create, critical thinkers in our schools. #satchat
A1. Creativity is NOT a finite resource! As we foster a culture of creativity, we inspire our learners and they inspire US! Steel sharpens steel. Enthusiasm is infectious. #satchat
So important as a school leader to encourage staff to take healthy risks and get off the porch #GOTP. To create that type of environment can be a challenge bit is awesome when it happens. #satchat
A1 creativity is life-satisfying work and play .. creativity is a path to learning for all, a lifelong for some, it’s a wellspring of humanity that is as much about peace and empathy as it is about thinking, invention, making, 🍋#Satchat
Creativity demonstrates student thought rather than regurgitating mine as the teacher. Best part of the teaching is to see a student solution to a problem that you never thought of #satchat
A1 if creativity is at the forefront at the beginning of school, it sets the tone for how the year will go. Whether the risks are great or small, Ts and Ss will know it’s ok to take a chance. #satchat#creativity#change
A1: It’s a great way to make sure all of the critical thinking skills and knowledge is being transferred and applied. Coming up with a creative way to solve problems is how humans keep improving. #satchat
We are only as creative ... as innovative ... as we need to be ... if the learner is handed everything than when will they learn resourcefulness ... seeing things used differently than their intended purpose ...to creatively think #satchat
A1) Developing a culture of creativity in our schools means that we value student innovation and foster their ability to bring what’s only been in their imagination to life! #satchat
A1 We must be what we want to see. Engaged, excited, and creative educators have students that exhibit the same. It isn’t 100%, but it’s still so worth it. #satchat
A1: The importance of the 4Cs in education is continually understated. We can have all the knowledge in the world but without #stem skills what will we do with the information? #satchathttps://t.co/29lqbsoyOv
Creativity is a soft skill that can be developed. It doesn’t get attention in education circles because it’s hard to measure or show on a test score. #satchat
A2: I think students being able to work their best in their own space fosters creativity. We all learn differently, so why are we all sitting at desks? More options for students Foster independence & vulnerability, which coincide with creative abilities #satchat
❗️ Please RT for Ohio ❗️
The upcoming special election for @dannyoconnor1 is extremely important. The opposition knows that too. Please check your polling location before heading to the polls! 👇🏽👇🏽
A1- #Satchat how did that Einstein quote go? If we judged a fish on how well it could climb a tree? Fostering creativity allows students to find themselves- allows for you to grow to your best you.
A1) Teacher autonomy is a huge component of this. Treat us as professionals, and you’d see creative projects flourish! Don’t give me a script...don’t give ANY TEACHER a script! #satchat
A1: A culture of creativity engages students and teachers, and is fertile ground for true problem solving. It's a large part of what Ss need for lifelong learning.#satchat
Yes, but in turn as we carry all that knowledge in our pocket we have to remember that knowledge is not ours ... that is not our creativity ... that is creativity we borrowed from somebody else. #satchat
A2: Our space should should let learners know that all ideas are welcome. Collaborative seating arrangements, brainstorming or wonder walls, reflections that are posted. It should be a feeling you get when you walk in! #satchat
And monoculture schools reduce biodiversity and put the ecosystem at risk - creativity comes with boundary spanning demographics, experiences, assets #satchat
A2 Starts w/how a teacher arranges/decorates his/her clssroom. When students say to me "this classroom looks different" they "get it" & hopefully it encourages them to think different #satchat
Ss need to be supported in taking creative risks, often creativity is inhibited by the fear of being judged in some way. Ts need to give Ss the confidence that their creative endeavors will be supported and accepted #satchat 😊
A1 We must be what we want to see. Engaged, excited, and creative educators have students that exhibit the same. It isn’t 100%, but it’s still so worth it. #satchat
Honestly, I think it isn’t a soft skill to be developed but human nature that needs reawakening. We teach kids (and adults) that creativity won’t get you far in life (hello professionalism) #satchat
A2: Furniture arrangement that encourages collaboration & creativity, flexible seating, and materials/resources that are readily available! Kids shouldn’t have to “ask” for what they need to be creative. #satchat
#SatChat A1b Presently in the forward of Run Like A Pirate (#RunLAP?).. What’s reflection without creativity? I think there’s an innate need in all of us, a quite voice for most.. supporting creativity helps get us out there. Or something like that.. brain drag at 5 am.
It’s time for educators to make a shift in mindset and start valuing creativity and other soft skills more. Prepare students for the world of the future, not the past. #satchat
Creativity is a soft skill that can be developed. It doesn’t get attention in education circles because it’s hard to measure or show on a test score. #satchat
A2 Non traditional seating and arrangements help support creative thinking. Let’s get away from the rows of desks and make the learning space flexible. #satchat
A2: Flexible spaces that allow for movement. We need to provide space for independence, collaboration and most importantly for things to get messy! #satchat
A2: teacher can easily position herself as equal among kids to disrupt the power differential that makes kids wait for “right” answers. Sit among kids. Make “the front of the room” disappear #satchat
A2 Flexible seating and art supplies might help a little, but to encourage creativity, the psychological context is much more important than the physical one. #satchat
Are students learning how to be creative? Are we giving them tasks that encourage exploration, personal connection, and play—or are we asking them all to create basically the same thing? #satchat
Do we define the parameters of their work so they can be creative within those parameters, or do we give them so much choice that they fall back on whatever is easy and familiar? #satchat
We need to be paying teachers a comfortable, living wage. No teacher should ever have to work two jobs to survive or worry about their students having the supplies they need to succeed. Teachers shape the character, caliber, and future of our children. Vote Democrat #SatChat
A2 Colors in the building or classroom, student work that celebrates the culture, staff work that celebrates the culture, furniture that encourages student to student conversations #satchat
A2: Promoting choice spaces, but not overehelming to the senses. Remember...the cat poster on the wall that tells the kid to hang in there doesn’t make the kid hang in there if they don’t think you want them to hang in there. #satchat
A2: When students feel relaxed/comfortable in a space, creativity will flourish. They will feel safe to take risks. Let students take control over how they want their learning space to look/feel. #satchat
A2: A great physical change that can spice up a creative learning environment is for educational leaders to get out of the way of colleagues and for teachers to get out of the way of students so that risk-taking and creativity can thrive #Satchat
A1) Scripted programs and some adoptions squash T creativity, too. If Ts feel it, they pass it on to Ss. Give us the freedom to create, and we will encourage our students to do the same. All about culture! #satchat
A2- #Satchat if there is one right answer or one way to do it, you're doing it wrong- open ended learning enables students to personalize their education.
A1: The profile of a Virginia graduate is changing and now includes creativity as a necessary component of the complete student experience. #satchat#ycsdchat
A1: As we prepare students to be future ready, the skills that are considered important are shifting quickly. Creativity is expected to be in the top 3 by 2020. #satchat
A2: Create a physical learning environment conducive to collaboration, communication and supply maker spaces and time to play and tinker...learning is the art of discovery and creativity flourishes 😊 #satchat
Comes down to recognizing people’s strengths/passions and help them reach their potential. Put them in a position to be successful through the creation of a culture which not only encourages this but also celebrates it! #satchat
Creating a culture of creativity requires the opportunity to be creative ... which is more than giving a kid 6 straws, 8 pipe cleaners, 2 paper plates, and a glue stick with the instructions make a _____.
#satchat
A2: First, learning communities need to be literacy rich and spark creativity. I love the steps that my buddy @DrChris4Kids did in her schools. Even in the hallways you’re led to ponder. Creativity should live throughout the school. #satchat
Physical changes ... enhance creativity ... sure let's paint "Be Creative" on the wall and that will inspire ... nah ... creativity is about doing ... thinking ... sometimes being in that hard chair makes you think about designing a better chair #satchat#satchat
A1: Give students a unique learning experience that meets their social and emotional needs, anyone can deliver content, delivery love and compassion #BeRare#satchat
A1 part 2. I feel Ts have to show creativity regardless because they have no clue what’s in store for them. They can plan and get ready but don’t know what works in the classroom, type of Ss they r getting, or if admins philosophy has changed. Kudos to those who adapt. #satchat
A2: the space a child is asked to be creative in needs to allow for creativity. Flexible seating that can be used for a variety of setups, open access to materials and resources, and as much as possible student created. #satchat
Check out this new book co-authored by @pammoran "Timeless Learning: How Imagination, Observation, and Zero-Based Thinking Change Schools" https://t.co/niSHR3slR5#Satchat
A2: flexible seating. Maker space env in classrooms-not just places you visit. Artwork on walls that reflects vision and encourages creative thought processes. #satchat
A2. Physical environment is important, but even more important is the climate. If you create a climate and culture of creativity, Ss and Tchrs will make, create, and innovate. Set out the materials and watch what happens. #satchat
I would agree that older generations downplay creativity and have downplayed it for years. I can remember not too long ago people telling their parents they want to be “artists” or “musicians” and it not being accepted. That’s what we are up against #satchat
A2 Simple place to start is by ditching desks in rows! Ss can’t be creative when in their isolated from each other. Great opportunity for creative seating arrangements. #satchat@kheiladunkerly
A2) Some physical changes are just eliminating any barriers or obstacles in our students paths. Re-examining seating arrangements, our lesson plans and rubrics, eliminating the 📦, and living outside of it. #satchat
A2: Flexible seating encourages students to get involved in discussions that foster listening to the ideas of others & to contribute about the material. #satchat
#satchat A1. for our students to solve the world's biggest problems they need to think outside of the box. Cretivity also allows different students to shine.
A2) Better question - what is the experience that you are trying to create? Then build up from there. It’s easy to just go on Pinterest and build a “cool” room for you w/o thinking of bigger picture. That’s like putting an iPad screen in an old comp system. #satchat
A2 I am looping with my class so at the end of last year I let them help me design how they want the classroom set up. It gives them a sense of ownership. #Satchat

#SatChat A2b In her “The Space Book: A Guide for Educators” @RLH_DesignED has us ask “What do we want Ss to do in this space?” If something doesn’t enable/support that out it goes.
A2: Physically, the room should allow discussion among Ss and shared spaces for collaboration. Providing opportunities for movement can support creativity, along with a variety of accessible materials Ss know they can use as needed. #satchat
A2: Flexible furniture, resources, and space would be ideal. Sometimes you just need to provide the space for hem to be creative and the rest can take care of itself. #satchat
A1 I think we need a big picture & individual view of creativity. How do systems nurture creativity and how do we draw it out in our students & our own practice. #satchat
A2: Promoting choice spaces, but not overehelming to the senses. Remember...the cat poster on the wall that tells the kid to hang in there doesn’t make the kid hang in there if they don’t think you want them to hang in there. #satchat
A2. Hands-on activities! Get students out of their seats and interacting with their physical environment. Make your anchor charts interactive with @Postit or augmented reality. Use sticky notes and @LEGO_Group to transform any classroom into a creative maker space. #satchat
A2 Flexible seating and art supplies might help a little, but to encourage creativity, the psychological context is much more important than the physical one. #satchat
I would say first and foremost the teacher modeling the risk taking culture I would want to see. If the students see the T is willing to take the risks, the are far more likely to. Also, providing positive feedback to students who might think outside the box. #satchat
And help parents and the community understand these “soft”skills are leading indicators and the foundation of the “hard” skills they want to see developed in their students. #satchat
It’s time for educators to make a shift in mindset and start valuing creativity and other soft skills more. Prepare students for the world of the future, not the past. #satchat
"It has been a sickening marvel to witness the hypocrisy of men and women for whom I was no longer "Christian enough" ignore porn star affairs, applaud the building of walls, and celebrate the silencing of black athletes."
#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/leW4mNOiMg
Yes, I have seen some amazing things happen when teachers are given the opportunity to do something new that they create. Then students take it even further. That's learning! #satchat
A2: How about the metaphysical? How our students think is part of developing their creativity! It may be a skill, but how we think is directly tied to confidence in using the skill. #STEM#4cs#satchat
A2) No. more. rows. Allow collaborative spaces. Give Ss more than paper and a pencil (tech, STEM supplies, apps, etc.). Let go of traditional class setups and supplies. #satchat
The obvious question is ”how can I help?” Pushing admins to value creativity by developing creativity as Ts is a significant way. Finding workarounds in the classroom to validate creativity AND speak on how society functions is another #satchat
Changing physical space is a small step. What matters most is the culture and learning that is created because of the thinking and collaboration that is going on! #satchat
A2. Physical environment is important, but even more important is the climate. If you create a climate and culture of creativity, Ss and Tchrs will make, create, and innovate. Set out the materials and watch what happens. #satchat
#SatChat Maybe. Depends. Dunno about you but i think i’m most creative in critical situations.. you know, when the going gets tough the tough start thinking/creating. #SatChat So yeah, illumination helps.
A2 I am looping with my class so at the end of last year I let them help me design how they want the classroom set up. It gives them a sense of ownership. #Satchat
Agree. I always enjoy telling people WHY I have my classroom structured as I do more then HOW I have it structured. I just dont do something or bring something in without a purpose to my goal to better reach my students #satchat
A2. Hands-on activities! Get students out of their seats and interacting with their physical environment. Make your anchor charts interactive with @Postit or augmented reality. Use sticky notes and @LEGO_Group to transform any classroom into a creative maker space. #satchat
In order for a kid to solve a problem, they first have to realize there is a problem to be solved ... and buy into the fact the problem is a real problem. Finding a solution is based on creativity. #satchat
A2: if the culture in the school and classroom isn’t an environment where Ss and Ts can move away from the norms of traditional, boring educational methods, the physical environment & resources don’t matter. #satchat
A2: How about the metaphysical? How our students think is part of developing their creativity! It may be a skill, but how we think is directly tied to confidence in using the skill. #STEM#4cs#satchat
Part of me wonders what would happen if students came the first day to a clasroom that was a blank canvas, and a T had the class community decorate it; as opposed to the T doing it ahead of time. Just something I’m chewing on #satchat
A2: How about the metaphysical? How our students think is part of developing their creativity! It may be a skill, but how we think is directly tied to confidence in using the skill. #STEM#4cs#satchat
I would say first and foremost the teacher modeling the risk taking culture I would want to see. If the students see the T is willing to take the risks, the are far more likely to. Also, providing positive feedback to students who might think outside the box. #satchat
A2 One way to physically change a classroom to foster creativity is think differently about the classroom. Go beyond flexible seating. Move the teacher desk out of the way and use the whole space--walls, laptops/tablets, apps, floor, ceiling, go outside, use the halls.
#satchat
Not only do we need to give freedom for our students to be creative, our admins need to give us as teachers that same freedom. Stiffling teachers, stiffles students. Glad for my freedom loving admins #satchat
Sometimes creativity can also be sparked by asking: if I gave you this bin of materials, what could you do with a partner if you had 15 minutes in this awesome library space? The Ss ideas will be better than ours! 📚😃 #satchat
Exactly ... if given the opportunity and resources to build something ... what would they build? How would they construct their learning environment. What would be their design vs a design constructed to please their teacher? #satchat
#satchat

A1: a school culture that encourages creativity promotes individuality & a safe learning environment. Reinforces the message to Ss that they are free to be themselves. #satchat
Sometimes creativity can also be sparked by asking: if I gave you this bin of materials, what could you do with a partner if you had 15 minutes in this awesome library space? The Ss ideas will be better than ours! 📚😃 #satchat
A3: Encourage Ss to see all sides of a problem, all perspectives, help them consider that which they have yet to consider...model creativity and #growthmindset 👍 #satchat
#SatChat A2c My two days shy of two years old granddaughter Lily toddling to the toy pile and picking a fresh one doesn’t first put away what she had before. Not pausing to clean up a creative space until the creative phase has passed is important. #Observation
A3: Foster trust by encouraging risk taking. Building rapport, attempting interesting projects, and the largest step - eliminating grading - will allow for more creative opportunities. #satchat
A3: #1 Listen to your Ss. Become a "yes" teacher when they have an idea that they're passionate about, and let them run with it! Show them you care and that you're letting them explore & experiment over time they'll be more comfortable with creative exploration #satchat
#satchat We all do this already: when your #classroom is a safe space, then #students will be comfortable expressing their own creativity, or at least more comfortable.
A3: Growth mindset helps make students more comfortable in taking risks and making mistakes. I don't know how ... yet. My brain learns from mistakes. #satchat
A3 Choice in assignments and safe learning environments where the class culture is positive, encouraging, and allows for risk taking will help students be more creative. #satchat
A2: Creative learning spaces, visible leadership stopping in to visit, intentional learning activities. Comfortable, sensory learning spaces. We LOVE whiteboard tables students and teachers can work on!#satchat
The space should reflect the learners who use it. Give them ownership of the space or they will create their own. This is from Board of Innovation... #satchat
A3. Place students in an environment in which they don’t feel threatened. Programs like @Flipgrid allow all students to be heard and have a voice. #satchat
A3 Model your own creative thought process for Ss. Let them see you try something new and let them see when your new ideas fail. Be the example, good or bad. #satchat@kheiladunkerly
A1) Developing a culture of creativity in our schools means that we value student innovation and foster their ability to bring what’s only been in their imagination to life! #satchat
A3: Creating a safe environment from the start is a necessary for Ss who are uncomfortable with being creative or sharing their creative ideas. If they feel safe in their teams and classroom, they will lose the other fears. #satchat
A3: Students will often follow the lead of the teacher. I remember trying everything as a 3rd grade teacher to be brave holding that crayfish in science. 🦐 They need to see us model creativity and risk taking and they will follow! #satchat
A3: Ts can model ways they have been creative and show they embrace growth mindset. Talk the talk and walk the walk. Preface discussions by saying to Ss “give me your crazy ideas”. Our 4th grade mantra included “I think differently than others, and that’s good”. #satchat
It comes down to the teacher. And if, as a school leader I teachers to take healthy risks and get off the porch #GOTP, I have to model that. I have to positively reinforce teachers who are thinking outside the box. #satchat
A3) Est a culture of creativity from day 1 is key. “We are a classroom family that supports and uplifts and encourages.” Help the person that needs help. Collaborate. No making fun, no negatives, etc. If Ss feel empowered they WILL be creators. #satchat
#satchat Q3: I think it would be important for children to know there is no wrong answer when being creative, and encourage the thought that being creative can be a lot of fun!
Part of me wonders what would happen if students came the first day to a clasroom that was a blank canvas, and a T had the class community decorate it; as opposed to the T doing it ahead of time. Just something I’m chewing on #satchat
A1: The world economic forum says that the need for creativity in the workplace has increased significantly to the number 3 skill in the last 3 years. We have no choice if we want to prepare our kids #satchat
#satchat Q3: creative thinking is NOT a set of boxes to check- Ss are often unsure at first and want to know when they need to "do" to be creative. It comes with practice, and it comes with a culture that discourages 🍪 cutter projects and conformity
Or re-envision that which is old. I still think desks are the most most flexible form of teaching, I can purpose them for individual work, pairs, group tables, a large conference table, 1/2 cirlce seating, etc. Whatever I need for the task #satchat
Environments are the underpinning for collaborative, creative exploration. Create opportunities for inquiry & co-discovery within and outside of classrooms #Satchat
The reason kids are uncomfortable with creativity is because they are trying to find the creative response that pleases their teacher and not actually trying to do it for themselves. We have restricted creativity in education and what we need is unfettered creativity. #satchat
A3: start small, affirmations for work completed, encouragement to push Ss along. Once they begin to get it, continue challenging them at a higher level and some may get it and move on without even knowing. It really comes to the relationship and encouragement. #satchat
As @irasocol says how do you know your kids and their needs before you create space - and do you iterate space as needs change over a month, a year, ages 4-18 #satchat
A2) Better question - what is the experience that you are trying to create? Then build up from there. It’s easy to just go on Pinterest and build a “cool” room for you w/o thinking of bigger picture. That’s like putting an iPad screen in an old comp system. #satchat
I agree with this. I like concept of being creative with rooms and spacing. But there has to be the creative reason behind doing it. You can create a flexible room, but if you are still teaching traditional methods in boring ways, then go back to seating rows. #satchat
A2: if the culture in the school and classroom isn’t an environment where Ss and Ts can move away from the norms of traditional, boring educational methods, the physical environment & resources don’t matter. #satchat
Teaching kids to be comfortable with failing and the learning and growth that can come is a cornerstone here! A great story tends to be centered around lessons learned from failure. #satchat
Ss continue to think out of the box ideas and are limited only creatively as they progress into the upper grades. Give adults, high school Ss, middle school Ss and elementary (and younger) a container of legos and watch the creative juices flow. #satchat
Yes! Every aspect of a student’s environment—from the furniture arrangement to their classmates to what they ate for breakfast to the thoughts they have about school—is part of the context that shapes their behavior. #satchat
#SatChat A3a Do something.. unexpected. Yesterday I was sharing with my friend Sari the kidney-theft story.. https://t.co/b28ITgWUf3 .. releasing brains from mundane tasks/thinking can kickstart the creative process.
This goes along with how important it is to be our best selves before we can teach that to our Ss #satchat this falls into the categories of everything we do, not just creativity!
So many are conditioned for a number of reasons, to stay inside the box. I am begging teachers to get creative and think outside the box. Common response- “I didn’t think we could do that”. #satchat
A3: Support failure and model failure often if you want kids to experience being creative because often doing and redoing over and over are common! Let failure and creativity thrive! #satchat
A3: Allowing Ss opportunities and choice to demonstrate creativity. Celebrating Ss and Ts creativity (which is a synonym for RISK). And demonstrating my own creativity. When we honor something, we demonstrate its value in our system. #satchat
A3 Of course students are uncomfortable being creative at school—an environment that encourages conformity through rules, standards, and peer pressures. We can’t take those away, but we can help students notice their influence and choose how to relate to them. #satchat
A3: A great strategy for students to feel comfortable and confident enough to be creative is to form a connection and letting students know you are rooting for them. Be a legit educator! Hattie says teacher credibility has a .9 effect size #Satchat
I think the easiest, and best, strategy to promote creativity is choice. Offer a kids a menu of activities that are engaging and multi-layered, and encourage them to create something new.
#satchat
It’s a question some visiting Chinese school principals asked when they saw the well decorated walls in an English classsroom.
‘What’s the reason the teacher has created all the wall decorations? ‘ #satchat
A3: I think listening is key. We often interrupt their line of thought or try to quickly to steer them in OUR direction. Let them lead us! This will take time, but the end result will be powerful! #satchat
A3. Bite-sized activity centers that allow students to work in small groups to help introduce creativity without feeling exposed. Having students work in small teams & tweet photos of their content-inspired creations at a @LEGO_Group center, for example, is an easy start #satchat
A3 If we break down the traditional definition of “creativity” for students and help them understand and own their unique strengths (how they think, feel, behave) then creativity becomes natural, innately who they are and how they learn. Teach to their strengths. #satchat
A3) Tell students how YOU create. Model for them that creativity may have risks but also great rewards. Share YOUR stories of failures and successes! #satchat
Building a foundation or creativity is starting to build a culture of #STEM. Check out my 10 Ways to Start the Year with a STEM Culture. #satchathttps://t.co/x77MV9Sdoj
A3: Encourage and the practice of learning something new. Existing skills can be tweaked and adjusted based on the learning. Reduce judgement. #satchat
A 3 I think educators are more uncomfortable with the term ‘creativity’ than students. We know what we want from students but it’s sometimes hard to explain it, and it’s especially hard to teach it. #satchat
That’s so true- creatives look inside themselves .. it’s the rate human who makes it through school with belief in their own creativity intact #satchat
A3: start with their comfort zone and use scaffolding to extend creative components. Allow think time and Ss to write thoughts, create gallery walk with peer suggestion and allow time to revise #satchat
A3 Allow & encourage play. Laugh at "unique" answers to your questions that may not be the "correct" answer. Have music on when they enter the room & if they choose to dance, so be it. Allow them opportunities to express themselves. #satchat
A3) Promote creativity by limiting constraints on educational expression, allow more open ended projects/questions, encourage collaboration, communication, and creative thinking. Play on students strengths & be open to where the journey may take you. #satchat
That was a great convo this morning.
Thanks #satchat PLN and guest moderator @kheiladunkerly
Next week the Summer of #Satchat continues with @AngCleveland guest moderating.
See you at 8 AM on 8/11
Part of me wonders what would happen if students came the first day to a clasroom that was a blank canvas, and a T had the class community decorate it; as opposed to the T doing it ahead of time. Just something I’m chewing on #satchat
It is essential that we are comfortable and encourage students to pose questions that we don’t know the answers to. We need to create a culture of inquiry #satchat

A3 As with the writing and problem solving processes, we need to model the creative process and support each student as they learn to think creatively. Think-pair-share is an excellent way to overtly grow creative ideas. Creative ideas spur new creative ideas.
#satchat
#SatChat A3c Last night in the dark I tripped over a tweet about complaining.. https://t.co/gDSNXFxcjq ..that’s an unexpected thing for most. Ask HMW _____ to get past a tough situation?
Q3 In regards to writing, my 5th graders often feel there is only one way to do writing. I try to break them of formulaic writing with lots of modeling followed by practice & specific praise when sharing out. Express your voice! #satchat
PGA Golf Prize Money Up for Grabs at the 2018 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational https://t.co/bdEYBgCNEc Justin Thomas Tommy Fleetwood and Ian Poulter tied for the lead at -11 under #SaturdayMorning#satchat
It's all about the @hivesummit, folks! There's still plenty of time to get in on this AMAZING (and TOTALLY FREE) teacher PD opportunity. #HiveSummit BEE your best teacher self this year! #satchat
I’m good with it- needs to be positive and productive though. Can’t turn into a bunch of dissenting adults complaining about problems and not looking for solutions. Find solutions! #satchat

By being willing to move off the curriculum when an opportunity presents itself. It’s a challenge. Politicians don’t want teachers to be creative. They want efficiency and conformity. That’s the battle. You have to be a little rebellious as a T #satchat
A1: Creating a culture of creativity in the classroom and school is what helps Ss (and Ts and Admin) to come up with creative solutions to problems and situations they encounter, not just in school, but in everyday life. #satchat
I agree. It’s easy as Admins to say “OK! As a staff, I want you to be more creative! Take risks!” We forget they learned in a system that continues to devalue creativity! We need to help Ts learn how to value creativity & foster the growth of it in their classrooms #satchat
