#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Steve in NW Indiana (Chicago-ish). Long-time Christmas guy. The fictional city in Christmas Story is the city where I taught for 11 years after leaving the CCSD & where my mom was a school nurse for 28 years. #nvedchat
A1-Easy...ALWAYS keep things relevant to student's learning and make it engaging.
Should happen everyday of the year and it won't matter if it's a Friday or a Wednesday. Students will want to be there ready to learn! #NVedchat
A1- Hands on, collaborative activities! Today my geography class used #sketchup to create a 3D model of a water filter for a village in Africa, then they had to build their design & test it. #NVedchat
Personalized projects are awesome! I've seen too many worksheets be given and too much busy work right before holidays. Doesn't help anyone...both student and teacher.

As of late we finish the semester before break, so we're trying to squeeze in the last of the new material plus leave proper time for review. Kids are anxious, so my biggest job is paying attention to when I can push & when to put on Spotify & circulate while they work. #NVEdChat
That is so awesome! I was born in Blantyre, Malawi, Africa. Would love to see some more pics and the activity itself. Will DM you...
Awesome stuff!

R2: I feel that if I’m absent, I am letting my students down. Because of that, I power through. I can have my downtime on weekends and on holidays. #NVedchat
A2-Make the missed work, easy to access even if students aren't in class. You can still keep them engaged in the lesson/unit/content.
Also, hold them accountable before, during, and after their absence to complete the work. #NVedchat
A2- My Geography class is a semester long so we have a review session when we return; our finals are mid Jan. My #APUSH class is constantly reviewing with #Canvas quizzes & after school study sessions. #NVEdchat
Q3: How have you worked around adjusted class schedules due to assemblies or other holiday events happening at your school or in the district like a canned food drive, etc...? #NVedchat
#NVedchat A2 review prior knowledge but definitely switch things up as they are very chatty right now and just have Christmas on their brains. Whiteboards instead of worksheets. Worksheets on clipboards and sit on the rug with the clipboards instead of at tables.
A1: I love group creative projects and art integration. I’ve tried tons of different things. Student centered seems to keep them going this time of year. #nvedchat

A3-Include it as part of the project. Had my students complete a geo-locator assignment during a holiday event with stuco. They had to pin their location in the gym and map it back to their class. Then, determine if the route was the best, efficient, or fastest. #NVedchat

We just finished ISTEP (state test) retesting. Our wise admins split up the jrs/srs and LA/math to limit attendance disruptions. So for me (flipped instruction model w/Canvas) we just treated it like any other absence. Go get the notes & Let's Roll. #NVEdChat

A3- Depending on how much time is lost, I will either modify a lesson to finish the next day or if it’s a really short class (25 min), we play #Kahoots review, #UniversalYums tasting party, news Philosophical Chairs, or for my #AVID class- team building. #NVEdChat
A3: just go with the flow and make the most of the time you have. Kids need to fun stuff at school too, so we need to find the balance of our time with them. #NVedchat
A3 : #NVedchat Sometimes these things take up almost your whole block & you just have to change things around. If the assembly is during Math, we do some Math during another time of the day. Other times you have to go w/ it and miss some minutes
I mis AVID at @CimarrOnSpartan. I've told every prinipal I've ever had since then if they could only spend cash on one program. that should be it. #NVEdChat

A4. #NVedchat I go to bed early and just started @doterra oils before I leave my house lol. Just smelling them wakes me up. I also write a lot done so I do not forget things.
A4-Keep the work fun and engaging for us to... get into the projects, the activities, and make them interactive.
I even had a student team create a final project and I joined a team to finish it. Loved flipping the roles. #NVedchat
A4: I always looked forwardto a winter break and the time with my family. Just need to remind ourselves sometimes that’s many other people/parents work on holidays. “Finish Strong” for the kids and myself! #NVedchat
I stay super busy. There is so much going on that I have to use every second of the day getting stuff done. Oh, that reminds me I have to grade my AP Physics tests in the AM. #NVedchat
R4: The struggle is definitely real btw family committments & 2nd job which heats up in December. I try hard to prioritize things in order of due date. My sales pro wife calls it "working closest to the dollar". I just think "what's due next?" Plus plenty of Guaraldi. #NVEdChat
Thank you for joining #NVedchat tonight on "Holiday Plans".
Don't forget to follow the tweeters from tonight!
We are back live in 3 weeks on January 7. Have a wonderful holiday season!
