Matt from Utah, ELA teacher! I started to develop a global consciousness when I started to travel in college. Meeting people from all over the world and hearing their stories helps to develop a global standpoint. #globaledchat
Thank you @hsingmaster! Hi everyone! We are so excited to be here tonight to discuss "Youth Action and Leadership in the SDGs." #globaledchat#teachsdgs
Hi! My name is Gloria and I work with a @ECAatState program called @yesprogramnews. I was rocked into global consciousness through interactions and relationships built with incredible people from all over the world. #GlobalEdChat
Hi #globaledchat, looking forward to joining tonight from @iEARNUSA! One of my first global experiences was traveling to rural Mexico with my friend and her family and putting my high school Spanish language skills to use. #teachsdgs
Hi #globaledchat! I love this intro q. I am Ligaya, joining from NJ. Like @TeacherWinters, a college study abroad experience (for me, to Taiwan) rocked me into global consciousness. I was hooked on learning Chinese and the experience profoundly changed my life.
Hi #globaledchat: Noel, ELA teacher from NC. I was rocked into global consciousness in college. I went on study abroad trips with the School of Business and the English department that opened my eyes to what the world is really like beyond my small corner.
Hi #globaledchat! I’m Margret, and I am ELA teacher in Louisiana! I was lucky enough to go to elementary school with peers whose families are from around the world, so I saw the potential of embracing the world. #TeachSDGs
Thank you, it's so great to be here! @yesprogramnews has been around since 2012 and it's program that brings high school students from significant Muslim population countries to the U.S. to study for one year. Lots of SDG work involved too! https://t.co/IK5KJNFD7n#globaledchat

A1 - Students should understand that their actions matter and that they have a voice early in life. They can create change quickly if they set their mind to it. One of my students has her own 504c-3 and she just turned 15. It is great to see such motivation. #globaledchat
#Globaledchat good morning from India . Aprajita Ralli here..As always looking forward. It is a hot summer morning here. The predictions of a terrible storm ...which passed us by , left us relieved and Thankful.
A1: At iEARN we encourage youth to think w/ a global mindset. Youth are the future – our goal is to develop relationships and a passion for taking action to be leaders in communities near and far #globaledchat
Hi #GlobalEdChat. I’m Jennifer D Klein, Head of School in Bogotá and author of @globaledguide. I went to experiential schools and grew up in a boycott family, so I don’t remember a time I didn’t feel globally conscious. It was part of my family culture to engage, not just talk.
A1: Our youth have the tools at their disposal to impact the world in ways that we did not as kids. I have a former student who has started his own business via YouTube and is trading on the stock market. #globaledchat
Hey, guys! Phil Wagener, Education Technology Specialist with @ksuiteach. I was tired of assigning outdated worksheets from an equally outdated textbook. I wanted something more authentic and real! I wanted to disrupt the traditional models of learning. #GlobalEdChat
#Globaledchat A1. whatever we do today will reflect in what we get Tomorrow or leave behind for the next generation. It is important that our future knows how to do what .Their time has come to look at the Earth as their own ,so they need to display that belonging
A1: When young people learn of the world’s challenges without a way to act and create change, they become apathetic and disengaged instead of constructive leaders. Our current youth generation(s) are capable of solving our worst problems in new ways. #Globaledchat#TeachSDGs
What a great saying! It is important that we realize what we do has an affect on the tomorrow and future generations...the earth is changing so vastly and we are not adapting to the changes #globaledchat
By supporting youth leadership, we are giving them an opportunity to partake in the world and become leaders. They are the future, so if we do not support them and give them a chance to take action than what will the future hold? #globaledchat
A2: I was in @4H growing up and we did many local community service activities. Taking action locally first is a great way to get started! #globaledchat
A1: Small actions of volunteering as a youth with local organizations helped me still feel like I was contributing to a larger global movement in my own little way #globaledchat#teachsdgs
A1: Young people should have the opportunity to find their passion and have the support to take action. In order to inspire global citizens they need that opportunity to take risks with support. #Globaledchat
A2: I taught and led a volunteer program to teach ESL to adults in the community. The experience changed my perspective on my community and influenced my career path. #globaledchat
A2: Small actions of volunteering as a youth with local organizations helped me still feel like I was contributing to a larger global movement in my own little way #globaledchat#teachsdgs
A2 - I started tutoring ELL students when I was in high school and then continued that into college. I started with friends from Central American countries and that lead to working with students from Iran. All this opened me up to new experiences and cultures. #globaledchat
A2: I loved volunteering when I was younger. Whether at the local schools or at a family style soup kitchen, I loved building relationships with people and supporting where I could! #Globaledchat
@iEARNUSA A1 Providing support for student-driven action now will have significant effects on students’ future initiative and drive. Students complete my SDG initiatives because they think they have to. They complete each other’s because they want to. #globaledchat
Supporting sustainable energy in my community in Maine when they were trying to install a wind farm. I went to town meetings to support it and voice my opinion #GlobalEdChat
Perspective changing. I am still reflecting on what I saw and did and learned over the two weeks. There is so much universality in the human experience and so many things that we can all do better to support #SDGs around the world. #globaledchat
A1) It is essential that we empower our future leaders with essential skills and immerse them in simulated experiences that allow them to strengthen these skill sets. #GlobalEdChat
A1: Ideas for world change aren’t only valuable when they are given by adults. Youth have amazing ideas and only need a platform to share them. #globaledchat
I had a friend who taught ESL at a local community college while we were still in college ourselves. She really got involved with the migrant community in town and learned a lot about how they were treated. It was eye opening. #globaledchat
A2: When I was in high school our home received an anti-miscegenation flyer. I was heartbroken, but felt the need act. I made flyers with the message "Please Don't Teach Your Children Hate" and gave them to all our neighbors. #globaledchat
A3: iEARN loves project-based learning because effective projects always involve learning content and taking action. Introduce PBL at a young age and incorporate projects that are relevant to local & global issues, like the #SDGs. #globaledchat#teachsdgs
A2: Growing up, we didn’t eat green grapes (migrant worker rights) or Nestle products (baby formula in Africa). I was involved in tons of protests at Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant as a teenager, plus marches for pro-choice, Palestinian rights, women’s rights... #globaledchat
Spotlighting other youth role models! @yesprogramnews recently had an online youth summit where incredible service leaders from all over the world presented about the action they've taken in their local communities and the audience was super engaged #globaledchat#teachsdgs
A3 - I try to use the vernacular as much as I can: advocate, position, etc. and I give students a lot of opportunities to choose what they write about and engage with on assignments. That allows for choice and advocacy over time. #globaledchat
A3: We have mostly talked about how to create change, but we haven't had a project yet where we encouraged them to follow through with their ideas. I hope to change that next year. #globaledchat
It's amazing how much youth can teach each other and how much more of an impact that can make than when adults doing all the talking. #globaledchat#teachsdgs
Hello @kidworldcitizen#masterychat#globaledchat! @EmpaticoOrg platform contains lovely project prompts for connecting elementary classrooms worldwide. During my recent school visits, PD, Ts get really excited - it's easy, meaningful, and you can start right away!
We have been trying to get out students involved in taking more action locally, by getting to know their community. Small acts of kindness can go a long way! #globaledchat
A3: When I taught MS my Ss wrote letters to congress about child labor. That turned into a visit from @janschakowsky and then years of service learning that my Ss led to raise money to help educate kids around the world. You never know what inspires. Keep trying! #globaledchat
A3: We just started senior capstone projects this year, focused on social action (“Mi Mundo, Mi Pasión”). Students are focusing on topics they care about and finding ways to effect real positive change. #GlobalEdChat
That was similar to my experience. We had a small group of Iranian students at my grad school and I ended up being their tutor for a summer and it was eye opening to their culture and the experiences they had in Iran. #globaledchat
A1: if we don’t give them opportunities to lead while they are “still in the nest” so to speak, how will they ever learn to fly solo? Leading requires good communication and strong collaboration. Leadership opportunities are real-world assessments. #globaledchat
I agree. I think that seeing all of the student action lately has shown other teens that they can make a difference. The atmosphere is very open to speaking out on issues right now. #globaledchat
Yeah, it was sort of inevitable. I forgot to mention work around ending apartheid and lots of trainings in non-violent protest during college. #globaledchat
A3: Give Kids an open project to study something they are passionate about. We themed ours around violations of human rights. This led to amazing PSAs and documentaries about how to make a difference in the world. #globaledchat
A3 Monthly STEPs (Solving the Earth’s Problems). They’re a series of activities designed to get students to take the first step: coming up with an idea for action. #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
A4: Many urgent global topics are difficult to comprehend (human trafficking for instance) and even more difficult to see how to begin to make a difference. But raising awareness is something that can make a big difference and can be done by anyone. #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
A4: Global topics can seem abstract or distant. It’s easier for youth to engage w/global topics if they make an international connection or are given opportunities to engage with global topics through local actions that relate to their daily lives. #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
A3) If we truly desire students to take action and be vested in change, then we must allow students to explore and discover the stories and voices behind the #SDGs. Only then will students be driven by purpose. #GlobalEdChat
A4 - Mostly it can be personal bias from my students. I introduce a lot of topics and ideas throughout the year, but I present them so that students can make their own decisions about them. It gives them choice to decide how they think about events. #globaledchat
I’m co-chair of a global ed committee at my PK-12 independent school in Jax, FL. My global ed journey began with @TGC_IREX! So thankful for that year! #globaledchat
A2: I grew up w meetings that explored racial justice, with multi-racial family friends, & taking action at my school, which had "busing" of students. This had a huge impact on who I am today. I also marched one summer from Portland to Salem OR for PEACE! #globaledchat
A4 - it can be intimidating and difficult to locate resources. SDGs are big goals and it can seem like a project won’t make a dent in the global agenda #GlobalEdChat
A3: I always use examples of kids their age that took action in some way. That usually inspires them to either participate or find a cause of their own that they are passionate about. #Globaledchat
I was amazed when she replied and then wanted to come. It eventually led to her reading a statement to recognize our work on the House floor! #globaledchathttps://t.co/shVaBmfU8w
A4: Challenges include feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of global issues and not feeling equipped to engage. Sometimes, they have difficulty relating to the issue. #globaledchat
A4: A major obstacle students face with taking action can actually be us—the teachers. We have to be willing to step out of our comfort zones in order to learn and lead so our students can too! #globaledchat
A4: When they are from marginalized communities themselves and can’t understand why they aren’t supported so why should they support others? If you are fighting to live Day to Day, it’s hard to see beyond that. #globaledchat
Agreed! Sometimes it is difficult to step out of a comfort zone, when we as educators may be struggling with concepts on how to engage in global issues ourselves #globaledchat
A4: Conflict regions are really tough to address in some school contexts. The work I did bringing Palestinian voices into N American classrooms was tough because the topic is divisive. In Colombia now, local conflict topics are politically charged, hard to address. #globaledchat
yes! exposing kids to real-world examples of other kids taking action really makes the idea of taking action much more knowable. "I can do that" #globaledchat
High-stakes testing and college entrance pressure creates a conflict betw authentic engagement with the world, which is time-consuming and rarely testable, and deep engagements. Families need education that this helps pave kids' future #globaledchat#TEACHSDGs
A4: A lot of these topics take time to fully consider and develop. Really fits into PBL but might be difficult if larger projects are not planned. #globaledchat#SDGs
A5: I like to share stories of students taking action on the Global Learning blog. Here's an example of a student in Uganda helping to educate his peers and invest in the future of their country: https://t.co/KB2Q5YDshM#globaledchat#TeachSDGs
A5 - Right now I am running a 20% time project with my students that is meant to speak to a global audience. So far we have websites, videos, chats, interviews, essays, and art projects that will be collected at the end of the year. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A2 when in 2005 The RTI ..right to information act was institutionalised I was actively involved in creating awareness and raising issues ...
A4: I’ve learned working with teens that there are some that don’t know enough about topics to truly understand implications. For example, they may know there’s conflict in Syria, but not the players or context. That makes it hard to care about refugees. #globaledchat
I try. Today we discussed Israel and the Golan Heights and, separately, being vegan. These are issues that I care about, but I try to read the room and give students food for thought rather than my personal opinion. It is so hard though. #globaledchat
A5: #globaledchat These hens and many more (Tender, Nugget, Gucci- MS give fun names!) were named by my students past and present to provide eggs for kids each day in Ghana. Year long fundraising efforts... #globaledchat
#globaledchat A4. Planning of action , feasibility of those actions and the time constraints although we do try and overcome these but they stare into my face everytime I start to pick up something new and different with my students.
I see this dynamic pop up in both our advocacy and our curriculum - need to build 21st C skills to stay globally competitive rather than to solve global problems together #globaledchat
YES - violent/difficult histories are the most difficult to face, like a family's closeted secrets. The experience of the just-opened #lynchingmemorial addresses the US avoidance of discussing racialized terror in our history https://t.co/1dOV6nUnmz#globaledchat
A4: Conflict regions are really tough to address in some school contexts. The work I did bringing Palestinian voices into N American classrooms was tough because the topic is divisive. In Colombia now, local conflict topics are politically charged, hard to address. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A5. Just recently my students participated in the Earth day campaign collaborative effort with another school on @SkypeClassroom and another group also actively participated in the #myfreedomday campaign run by the @CNNFreedom
A5: I work with some incredible youth in a language immersion program. A few of them have created a working group to support diversity & inclusion in our programming and to serve as mentors for current Ss. They had the passion, all they needed was a bit of structure #globaledchat
A3 A 4-day Minimester focuses on helping students recognize their place in the global community (with visits to different cultural areas in their local community, workshops on global issues, a citizenship panel, service learning, etc.) #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
A6: Being a leader begins by seeing that you can have an impact in your local community and the world. The more we can encourage students to take action, the more willing they will be to step up as leaders. #globaledchat
A6: Let youth have “voice and choice” in their learning, or let them define the problem and design solutions! iEARN has had several global projects designed and led by youth like the YouthCaN #globaledchathttps://t.co/jUfRImJdeb
Love it. A friend just named elaborate their coop "Cluckington Palace." Engaging students in any way with the chickens' care and impact can be fun and meaningful! #globaledchat
A5: #globaledchat These hens and many more (Tender, Nugget, Gucci- MS give fun names!) were named by my students past and present to provide eggs for kids each day in Ghana. Year long fundraising efforts... #globaledchat
And don't forget that @AsiaSocietyEDU has created a set of free global leadership outcomes, rubrics, and I Can statements to help students see where they are on the path to developing leadership skills: https://t.co/YvCsxZdYIA#globaledchat#TeachSDGs
#globaledchat A6 .students ran A completely self driven COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT ...five groups of Ss ran an activity each ...of their choice .for eg - working for the Deaf ,working for the old age and working for the underprivileged ...these were totally Students driven .
A6 - I’m a returned peace corps volunteer and my best projects always took on the form of training of trainers. Give really driven youth the tools, and have them disseminate the knowledge #GlobalEdChat
A6: Show them examples of students their age who have taken on a project and been successful. Encourage them and give them support in designing a program to achieve their goal. Make sure they know that you believe that they are capable. #globaledchat
A6 - I again return to being an example. I want my students to know what a leader looks like, so I try to be one at my school and in the classroom. Beyond that I help students find their passion and an outlet for it. #globaledchat
Exactly. No one wants to have to confront their own country or culture’s history and recognize that they might have been on the wrong side side somehow. See this amazing work by my alum Sarah Fukami on Japanese internment in the US: https://t.co/gmY9oVIkMI#Globaledchat
Setting up the case for #globaled as one about competitiveness has hurt many. One reason #SDGs is a good framework is to show mutual benefit of global engagement, empathy. #globaledchat
A6: I created a student tech team, CSI - Cyber Space Innovators - to become leaders of tech in the school and support Ts who are tech adverse. #globaledchat
It's incredible how much passion and ENERGY students can have when they are really fired up. So much action potential in "student driven" #globaledchat
I am also moving away from the thought that being “global” is just about helping the less fortunate ... I would like to get into some collaborative projects #GlobalEdChat
A4: change is hard, and it takes courage to lead an #honestdialogue about what needs to change. Vulnerability and trust are key, and the more we share, the better we will be. #globaledchat
A1: Ss understand what it means to be a global citizen & they are the future leaders so teaching them leadership is good for the future. It allows for sustainability. #globaledchat#teachSDGs
A6: I think it’s mostly about getting out of the way and asking students how they think we might solve a given challenge. When teachers step back, students step up—especially when they know we trust them as learners and thinkers, and see them as whole human beings. #GlobalEdChat
A7: Start small. Start local. It’s easier to have a seat at the table when you are in your own community. Share your story to inspire others. Build your professional brand. Amplify the success of others. Join a group or build a network. Persist. #globaledchat#TeachSDGs
I love the way that you put this. Being able to step out of the way of students is such an important idea. Remove barriers instead of putting more between them and learning. #globaledchat
Hi Dennis! That’s a big part of my argument in @globaledguide. I think we only exacerbate old ideas about superior/inferior cultures if we always frame #globaled as an exercise in charity. Cultivate students’ asset lens and they’ll be much better leaders. #GlobalEdChat#TeachSDGs
In reply to
@hsingmaster, @DennisDill, @growingupglobal, @globaledguide
A5: To discuss current events but steer away from politics, use #TEACHSDGs#SDGs as a fantastic framework for engaging in the world's biggest challenges. #masterychat#globaledchat
#globaledchat A6 our grade 9 Students at the old age home ...looking after the senior citizens. ..playing games with them , bring a smile ( as that was their objective) ...@PathwaysNoida@ibmyp CAS in the true sense .very happy to see the Ss take such initiatives ,Ts just support
Exactly ... we need to create an opportunity to help kids get to know each other as equals ... not focusing on how we’re different but rather how we’re the same #GlobalEdChat
