Hello! Jason from ND. I teach K-5 PE. I like to think my “team” consists of my #PhysEd Twitter PLN, the @NDSHAPE crew and the #ndpechat & #espechat groups.
Hello. My name is Jeff Willis, and I’m a student at UGA. I am joining this chat to learn more about physical education for my EDIT2000 class. #espechat
A1: I teach all grades K-6. I like them to start learning how to appropriately work together as soon as possible. It looks different at each grade, but I start as early as I can. #espechat
Hey Jimmy. Good to have you back tonight. I'm assuming you'll be at VAHPERD. I just got word I'm presenting there. Would love to finally meet in person #espechat
A1) I teach them across the board in K-5. To me, cooperatives are the most valuable tool we can teach with in our likely limited contact time with Ss. Cooperatives bring up so many teachable moments and traits that matter in every aspect of life #espechat
A1 9-12th grade #secphysed. Hopefully ya'll don't mind HS chatting. I teach Team Building to develop culture of success and encourage ss to think about the education in Physical Education. #espechat
In K it starts w each person having a job for the group and taking turns having all jobs. I don't usually bring it to whole class until 4th grade. #espechat
I totally agree! It is what I spend most of my time on. I figure if they can figure out the social stuff, they will be in situations to learn more of the skill things. #espechat
A1 I teach to all my grades, k-5. I believe it’s very important for Ss to understand the importance of working as a team to accomplish a task. It also allows for great conversation with Ss no matter the age since they are working towards the same task. #espechat
Many of my ss have negative thoughts about what true Phys Ed should be. I use team building and cooperative activities dispel some of those thoughts. #espechat
A1) K-5 I do traditional team building/challenge activities to 2nd and up with K-1 I like to do parachute lessons to start the year then build more traditional team building lesson from there. Parachute offers tons of teamwork/ discussion points. #espechat
A1) I teach K-5 and teach team building throughout all grades! It looks quite different at each level but, important to learning social skills. #espechat
A1) I will definitely start cooperative activities with Kindergarten. The manner and level in which it is presented is important to focus on, but the earlier you start building that positive culture the better. #espechat
Hey, my name is Jonathan Stigler, I'm currently a student at UGA and am joining this chat to learn more about the impact of physical/interactive learning on a students retention and enthusiasm for a subject. #espechat#edit2000mane
A2: I specifically teach how to listen and respond. I use inside/outside circle I got from @HPEC_CA as an activity to teach this. I then use the same structure to debrief content during the year. #espechat
A2 I have them break in groups and each person in line has a hula hoop. The last person has to step forward and join person in front. They turn and hand the hoop 2the person in front. That hoop passes to every person til front person lays it down. Everyone moves forward #espechat
Really well. I have done a 2 week unit w/ 9th graders for the past 4-5 years. Most of my ss will sign up for the elective classes I offer for 10-12th grade. #espechat
A2) I like to teach activities that have movement and cooperatives combined. Any tag activity that requires cooperation from another student is usually the best way to “start” teaching the FUNdamentals. #espechat
A2.1 I do this activity because they can wear heels boots shoes etc. It starts my year off so they don't know schedules. Next level is blindfold with a guide!! #espechat
A1: I teach K-5 trying to make sure students understand the importance of working in groups, with a partner, understanding communication skills. listening to the ideas of others, and encouraging others to do their best! #espechat
A2: I teach getting in and out of groups quickly. Music start/stop find partner quick: its not about who the person is, its about completing the task #espechat
Depends on grade, but in 3rd - 5th I plan a scope/sequence of activities optimized for partner pairs, then groups of 3/4, then groups of 6. Rationale: Ss need often find success in smaller numbers first. Throwing them in to big groups at first is a recipe for disaster #espechat

A2) I created an activity using team shake that broke them into different size groups and had them share certain things about themselves ending with them sharing what they are most proud of. Being new to the school I wanted to build trust early #espechat

A2 I used @Mr_C_PE Silly Willy cards that had different tasks for Ss to complete. This showed my Ss from day 1 they needed to work together to accomplish tasks and that it is okay to be silly and communicate with ALL classmates #espechat
A2) I actually did a new activity this year (that I found from one of you guys). Transporting cups using Spider-Man’s web ;) A rubberband with four stings, each student has 2 strings. Move the cups from point A to point B using the spiderweb. As did amazing! #winning#espechat
first rounds working together, communication. I ask them how to go faster etc. Once the blindfolds come in it's about trust and communication. That's for 2nd grade and up #espechat
A1 I teach it to grades 7/8 because those are the only 2 grade levels at my school. When I taught K-6 I would start some shape/form of team building as early as gr1. I teach this topic bc 40% of our standards are in the SEL realm which can be covered by team building #ESPEchat
Q3: Please share ONE cooperative/team-building activity that YOU love teaching the most. Why do you love teaching it? #espechat
Feel free to upload images
A3: I love teaching the blindfolded obstacle course in lesson 3 because of our community circles at the end. Hearing the students discuss how they felt...powerful! #espechat
A2. Depends on the grade level. I like to start with having students getting organized by name ( first initial) age ( month/ year) You can see right away who is a leader... Then do something simple like the activity where the hula hoop circle game #espechat
A3 Human Knot. Love watching students think, communicate, and work together. Simple activity that allows me to see who the problem solvers and leaders in my classes. #espechat
A2 I started with an oldie but goodie, the human knot. It worked in perfectly with our second step lesson about negotiating and compromising as well as the action steps you take to get to the end point of a compromise #ESPEchat
A3: I love teaching pipeline because it changes every time. I never teach it the same way twice because it is so adaptable to meet the needs of each specific class. #espechat
A3) At my previous school we had tons of mats, so I created different structures with the mats then took a picture of them as blueprint. I would have the students work together and recreate the structure from the picture. Always fun to watch leaders emerge. #espechat
A3) For me, its gotta be "Blind Builders." This is one of our culminating communication focused activities in 4th/5th Grade Cooperatives https://t.co/UZKTn239EG#espechat
Chariot Race from @OPENPhysEd It provides students with chance to work together getting from one side to the other using different locomotor skills as a team. It is not about speed, the main focus is about listening to the task #espechat

A3 I LOVE teaching pipeline with the material use to insulate pipes (I don’t have the PVC version). Something about watching them go through level 1- building the perfect pipe to level 2- having the ball land in a hoop, to 3- creating your own obstacle is so cool! #ESPEchat
A3) One of my favorites is an activity called 'ZOOM' that I picked up from @ArtieKamiya last year. If taught correctly each class will break the world record in ZOOM! #espechat
So many good ones I love. 1- Lining up by categories, gradually removing easy ways to communicate. Ex: line up in ABC order, birth month, date, then backwards-see if they totally get out of order or just “switch” the line direction, then no talking, etc. #espechat
A3 this was one of my favorites that we did. Ss passed the pin down and once they made it to the other side they had to pull the scarf from under the pin. #espechat
A3 Cross the river is my favorite one. All students are involved. They need to be thinkers, risk-takers and caring. Can't work if there is no team spirit, communication, and support #espechat
A4 Appropriate communication, which is another reason I teach these activities. I want ss to understand my expectations for the right way we need to communicate to encourage all participants. #espechat
A4) Challenges = those teachable moments. We talk a lot about how you choose to respond in the face of difficulty speaks volumes about your character. Perseverance is part of the acronym ADROP (SO to @tloom as he is the originator) for a lot of our cooperatives #espechat
A4. Each class has its challenges. Most to the time it is just a misunderstanding of the rules or procedures. Most of the time lack of communication. #espechat
A4) There always seems to be a group or two that struggles with a member not accepting their particular role. This leads to a the whole group failing. It leads teachable moments for sure. #espechat
A4: Today I did pipeline in some of my classes. One S refused to listen to anyone else, then sat down and cried loudly how everyone was being mean to him and not letting him be part of the group. Turns out he had already had rough morning, (pt. 1) #espechat
A4 < finally followed that rule. 1 challenge is almost always all students talking at once. I let them do it for a while, then remind them to consider the purpose of the challenges. That usually works, then ask them for ways to deal with that very issue #espechat
A4 (pt2) and spent most of that day with the counselor. I tried speaking w him. His group tried having him be a part, and nothing worked. Still stumped as to how I could have made it better for him. #espechat
Nice! I call this one "Pass It Down" start with easier objects to grip/pass and groups make their way down their challenge list through harder pieces of equipment #espechat
A4: My challenge here is showing the "Shout the answer" students that listening is the absolute BEST way to lead a team. Watching my "introverts" flourish in this unit is AMAZING to see! #espechat
A4 I see many of the challenges come from Ss not communicating with each other. This leads to a great teaching moment where we discuss the appropriate way to communicate and why it’s what’s expected #espechat
A4 I don’t have a unit, but rather sprinkle it through the yr so as We progress I use evident observation to lead the next one. So if there is a break in communication that what I work on. I can also see this in the activity units I do as well to help determine lessons! #ESPEchat
Some days the walls are too high to get over. I always try to catch a student like that in the hallway and chat them up about anything. Then the next class have a quick chat before to get them engaged then praise them throughout the lesson #espechat
A4 I co-created this Success Criteria w Ss during the unit. Communication was a challenge sometimes. Some Ss struggled to be risk-takers. During the games we often refered to the success criteria. I loved the "think positively" idea. It was suggested by a student #espechat
K-2 do this as "Elbow Transfer" can only use elbows to grip and pass equipment. 3-5 do it as seen in Jimmy's video. Both use the same idea of starting with the easier equipment and then progressing to harder to handle pieces #espechat
I do the same. But this is a constant with him. I wish I knew the trick to get into his head. I try something new everyday. One of these days it has to work. #espechat
We had a student who struggled getting involved this year (starting with football). After some troubleshooting w/ admin, I got a call from PE T to come observe the activity. BC said student was not only doing it, but rocking it and leading the show. Boom. Huge win #espechat
A4 Even though they didn’t complete a challenge or possibly failed there was in fact richness in the process. Sometimes it’s about the journey, right. Really tough to grasp for those who want immediate gratification #ESPEchat
A5: I have Ss self assess on a daily basis about how helpful of a member of their group they were. Also about how they communicated. My Ss have learned to be honest w this because there are no negative repercussions. It is only used as a self check in. #espechat
A5 I like to use self-assessment attaches with success criteria. So maybe a level 1 will be I got stumped and didn’t budge, level 2 was I got stumped but contributed a problem solving idea, level 3 I comprised and negotiated an idea and level 4...1/2 #ESPEchat
A5b I am able to apply this skill into our activity units or class activity attached with a specific instance. Criteria would be something to this nature 2/2 #ESPEchat
A5) Something I want to get better with. I have them do a quick self assessment while leaving class based on effort and behavior overall but I would like implement a more definitive assessment tool. #espechat
A5 I agree with what everyone is saying with self-assess and evaluate what type of teammate they were. My district also has specific objectives that state students can work cooperatively in a group where a rubric is used #espechat
A5 I take a lot of pics during this unit. Upload the to Google folder that I share w/ ss. Assessment = create a google slides on how you used Growth Mindset, Communication, Discipline, + Safety during the unit. Add pic w/ justification. Ex:
https://t.co/bSBIchnEBW#espechat
Q6: Please share some other team-building/coop. activities you teach: beginning, middle, end of unit? What equipment is needed? #espechat Feel free to answer more than once.
A5. Self-assessment based on the success criteria. Here is an example of one activity I did "Hungry Hippos" At the end Ss had to record each other reflections and post them on @Seesaw Notice the last question "What did you do to be successful" https://t.co/JQEbIQSHOL#espechat
I find a student who was honest in a tough situation (being tagged, made a mistake but admitted it) and praise the student in front of everyone and say how proud I am. I tell them many games only work with honest students. #espechat
I do cooperative activities like this with noodles, collaborating to move without using certain body parts. Problem - solving and teamwork, from @justybubPE#espechat
