How can you incorporate tech into R&WW while still upholding the workshop philosophy, mentality and environment?
-
Hi! I teach first grade at Grapevine!
-
So happy to have you with us!
-
-
Q1 for https://t.co/Jnr06dqaeY
-
-
How can you incorporate tech into R&WW while still upholding the workshop philosophy, mentality and environment?
-
Gr8 topic tonight. Excited to join
-
A1: Technology is a tool, like the pen. It provides career readiness skills that are critical to achieve the goals of R&WW.
-
SO happy to have you and . Love my NYC teacher friends!
-
Technology is the tool not the goal. It is used to accelerate the learning. https://t.co/Nb7czIkooo
-
-
A1: Technology is a tool, like the pen. It provides career readiness skills that are critical to achieve the goals of R&WW.
-
-
So glad you were able to make it! !
-
A1: Technology can be used to give everyone an access point into the lesson! Minilesson, small group or conference
-
A1: Balanced mini opps- like alternating with digital curating books using BookCreator Apps
-
it stands for Reading and Writing Workshop!
-
A1: I like to incorporate tech into book clubs by having the kids use iPads to research. Check out the symbaloo app!
-
Technology is the tool, much like the pencil and R/W notebook before it. It should help facilitate workshop learning.
-
Tech can help students connect to a lesson, skill or concept
-
A1: Using classroom for necessary R&WW "paperwork" such as reading logs
-
a1 trying google docs for opinion writing this week.
-
-
Do you have a sample you can share with us?
-
A1: love to use tech as alternative for publishing and celebrating work
-
-
This is my speciality! Am I right?
-
A1: Tech can be incorporated in the independent writing phase or for brainstorming purposes.
-
A1. If it can be accomplished on paper, there is definitely a paperless tech alternative that fits into the workshop model!
-
What tech tools do you use for brainstorming?
-
A1. Think for digital "stopping and jotting"
-
We use 4 drafting, visible revision feat., peer & teacher comment & easy sharing. Keeps process visible n sts accountable
-
A1: Tech can be used as a differentiation tool to ensure all Ss have access to the content.
-
R and W is integrated thru tech, making tech a part of wkshp is preparing students for a successful literate future.
-
A1: Using technology like and products, collaborations facilitate creativity between S's like never before.
-
A1: biggest struggle Workshop Ts & Techies have is finding balance betwn infusing tech to support lerning & keeping Workshop values
-
A1: Google Slides & Drawing can be great tools for having students create their own anchor charts
-
A1. Anchor charts on the SmartBoard, or photographed, and shared on Google Classroom so Ss can access them anytime & remotely
-
. Yes and a big part of that future is digital literacies. Our teaching practices need to shift to support Ss
-
Q2: What reservations / hesitations do you have about incorporating tech into R&WW?
-
A1: I also think about it as an alternate means of presentation. Think - giving speeches via recording.
-
-
I use camscanner to keep everything organized!
-
Yes! The beauty of and makes it so easy to differentiate content!
-
Sorry, didn't realize my tweets weren't public! Reintroducing, I'm Michael, Gr2 teacher NYC Public Schools, friend of Lauren!
-
You can put your anchor charts in the "About" section of your G Classroom so they are easy to find
-
-
Was sharing the anchor chart Google Classroom idea with us the other day! LOVE IT! https://t.co/oYU8K4vWSo
-
-
A1. Anchor charts on the SmartBoard, or photographed, and shared on Google Classroom so Ss can access them anytime & remotely
-
-
A1. Peer editing & revision work can be facilitated using , the more collaboration the better
-
Welcome Michael! Thanks for joining us!
-
. Yes I make digital anchor charts all the time and they are perfect as a reference for Ss even when they go home
-
thanks Lauren, TC grad and just figuring out how to tweet.
-
A2: RW objective should be first. Tech helps you get there. Find tool to reach objective authentically, not just next cool tech tool.
-
A2: I think with all things tech, the hesitation is that the tech will overtake the learning. Ss need to know it's about the learning
-
Here on for moral support for my
-
-
A2: I tried using iPads during independent reading last year for an action research study, mixed results.
-
A2: Adults read paper and digital. Ss should have a blended reading diet too. I worry about tech fully taking the place of paper.
-
-
One challenge I have experienced is Ss typing speed can hinder the quality and quantity of the writing until typing is improved.
-
-
A2: Many of our customers fear their S's getting off track on their devices; not paying attention. Luckily, we've solved that issue.
-
Oh yes! We will chat more about this later!
-
agreed! It needs to start with the Teachers mindset though that its about the learning!
-
I use popplet for thinking maps and doodle buddy to draw ideas since I teach little ones
-
A2: Teachers shouldn’t be scared of giving it a shot. It might fail. Try again.
-
A2: Lack of confidence in properly planning effective instruction using tech. The unknown can be intimidating.
-
Very interesting! What apps did the students use?
-
Why did you have mixed results?
-
A2: I hesitate to use it because I don't feel like I know enough about HOW to incorporate technology!
-
Interesting! Thanks for sharing this with
-
A2: frustration w/ Ss wanting to play games all the time; wanted more authentic & meaningful uses (& play sometimes 2)
-
Totally agree. Ensuring we keep the priority as the Ss. It's their learning.
-
I was actually going to mention that...but I was worried everyone would think I was weird! LOL
-
-
. Yes typing skills need to be constantly practices so they can write with the same fluency they would P&P
-
The using of the device frustrated the little ones more than it helped them to stay focused in most cases.
-
Q3: Which tech tools do your students use in R&WW? Share tools for collaboration, publishing and/or day-to-day learning.
-
It is a concern. But if you build trust and set boundaries from day 1, things should be smooth
-
I like that tech allows for Ss to have several options for writing (i.e., write, type, speak)
-
Were the Ss trained on the apps before using them?
-
-
A3: just entered the world of to help bring writing about reading out of our notebooks and to a larger audience.
-
A2: I worry about the students not having enough opportunity to learn to write neatly, hold pencils correctly..
-
RazKids for GRL-leveled eBooks.
-
I agree. I also felt that Ss need to start somewhere! Wanted to have them try & develop skills https://t.co/NSTyWwZPtZ
-
-
One challenge I have experienced is Ss typing speed can hinder the quality and quantity of the writing until typing is improved.
-
late to the chat, but I'm going to try to jump in!
-
Love that you mentioned speaking. I help students talk to the Chromebook to get ideas out
-
A3: Using a Google Doc to allow Ss to write makes it easy for other students and the teachers to provide feedback by leaving comments.
-
-
Agreed! I think everyone has different preferences. We should allow our students to try out both! https://t.co/MsfnQEv4oZ
-
-
I have to print often to read text. Dislike digital text at times. Ss often feel the same.
-
Love that you are able to chime in!
-
I always try to remember that technology can be “low-tech” - pencil grips and hi lighter tools
-
what app do you use for that?
-
-
-
A2: hesitant to take time away from the mini lesson & ind. reading time.. Quicker to use books & chart paper!
-
Yes. Never just give up! Remember that kids r why we do what we do should keep us constantly seeking 2do what best.
-
I imagine skills like these will not be highly valued; we are moving towards a paperless society. https://t.co/DfynCtYSpj
-
-
A2: I worry about the students not having enough opportunity to learn to write neatly, hold pencils correctly..
-
Chris here from Middlesex County! Late but ready to go!
-
A3: I love integrating in and I also do my spelling online. Google Classroom is a must as well as classoom blogs
-
A3: is my go to for my firsties. Use Google Classroom as a hub for all of their work
-
Q3: We are a 1:1 campus so we often use apps on our iPads. Popplet and ShadowPuppet are two of my favorites.
-
A3: We use the BrightLink daily to project/celebrate our accomplishments during the Share portion of the R&W workshop.
-
Loving all these new tools!
-
-
-
I just recently stumbled upon for chromebooks. Allows students to create vlogs about their reading/strategies
-
The appropriate tool for the correct reasons.
-
Hope you'll be coming to on April 16! Would love to have you share!
-
A3: Last year we participated in student blogs in a Quadblogging scenario. Gave WW Ss a reason to write- to share with the world.
-
A3: ❤️ for publishing and drafting; had Ks & 1s use it and now 3-5th. Easy for Ss to use
-
we should investigate that app tomorrow.
-
I'll have to check this out! Thanks!
-
-
a3: i LOVE adobe voice for story planning. I haven’t used it enough this year.
-
A3: Can't imagine not using w sts in all subjects. Lucky to be a GAFE. It covers all the basics & ts choose apps & exten
-
Having an audience makes all the difference
-
I think we should also give tchrs choice also.
-
Google classroom/docs/draw .. Definitely tricky to find others that work in workshop model
-
Me too! I think I need a Teach Tool MTL soon! Even if it's just for me! LOL https://t.co/KpegiUi7gA
-
-
I'll have to check this out! Thanks!
-
Thank you for joining us !
-
-
A2: The only tech our Ss have access to is . It doesn't push the goals of R&WW, but we go old school w/journals/peer editing.
-
I would never want to teach without Classroom! So grateful to be in a district! :)
-
How are the blogs coming along?
-
I'd love to check this out! So metacognitive! https://t.co/ZV6y24GhOE
-
-
I just recently stumbled upon for chromebooks. Allows students to create vlogs about their reading/strategies
-
How are schools/classrooms using GAFE?
-
A3: Confer app to stay organized and focused.
-
Sts Make a video of self talking about presentation on screen with . Super easy.
-
-
Q4 What tech tools do you, as the educator, use in R&WW for organization, planning, and/or instruction?
-
They're awesome thanks to you!
-
-
-
-
Looking into the future. More text to talk we might not need typing.
-
A4. calendar for minilesson planning, drawing for graphic organizers (love to share, msg me!) & lots of extensions
-
-
A4 I could’t live without camscanner. organizes charts, takes PDFs. I use for small groups and conference.
-
-
-
-
Always have the goals up on smart board, lesson plans in Google forms!
-
LOVE the library! This made my heart melt.
-
A4: Confer is good; Evernote also good for notes
-
A4: I'm a big user of Google Drive. No more carrying around flash drives or e-mailing documents.
-
Would love to see some examples of your Google drawing graphic organizers...I just started doing this
-
A4. is an invaluable planning tool, I print articles to .pdf, post on Classroom & <3 sharing texts paperlessly
-
A4: A great tech spec. I know, (maybe u know her) helped w/ Google forms & the extensions for R/W anecdotal notes.
-
Uploading the videos into a Slide deck would be awesome to share out with the other classes https://t.co/QMgRYmQpX0
-
A4: I use the app Confer to record my conferring notes and I love it!
-
-
Have you tried Google Voice? It works very well. Great for certain circumstances.
-
A4: We use the BrightLink to study mentor texts and mark them up, highlighting craft moves and other focus skills.
-
-
Everything Google forms I learned from
-
-
This is the next thing I want to get into! Have big publishing plans with for this tool
-
I like to have students compare historical fictions novels with digital informational texts. A perfect way to mix the two.
-
-
Same here. Many tchrs and many students love it. Automatic save. Access anytime anywhere.
-
-
A4: I used google docs mostly
-
Great idea! https://t.co/PEGREeTTAC
-
-
I like to have students compare historical fictions novels with digital informational texts. A perfect way to mix the two.
-
Virtual snow days don't work unless EVERY child has WiFI! How's about we let kids be kids. Go play in the snow!
-
Yeah..that's why I wonder abt teaching kids to type....just my opinion.
-
A4: GAFE GAFE GAFE- my everything for planning!! :)
-
Q5: With increasing 1:1 initiatives, how can we be sure that we are truly assessing writing skills when typing skills are a factor?
-
-
I totally agree ! https://t.co/wWBeCRzRGv
-
-
Virtual snow days don't work unless EVERY child has WiFI! How's about we let kids be kids. Go play in the snow!
-
Anyone know if AP classes are permitted to let Ss use voice-2- text /dysgraphia?
-
A4:We make a RAN chart in SS and Sci on the BrightLink. Students go on iPads to https://t.co/8oaFRcoFe0 & add ideas to the class chart
-
I'll have to check that out!
-
-
A5: focus on process not product and teach tools for digital editing & typing through authentic experience
-
Absolutely! says that kids need breaks too! Let's sled!
-
OMG...just tried ! So easy :)
-
Next time I'm in your school you have to show me how that works!
-
-
So late but I'm popping into !
-
. I know!! It was awesome! So great for chromebook users, for all ages
-
-
A5 I rely on my lead literacy Ts to show off their best practices for assessment by opening up their classrooms
-
-
Because typing is a huge part of the future of writing. https://t.co/HNbM9IlGx6
-
-
Q5: With increasing 1:1 initiatives, how can we be sure that we are truly assessing writing skills when typing skills are a factor?
-
A5: Not everything needs to be typed. Just because we have 1:1 doesn't mean it needs to be used for everything.
-
Through adequate conferencing throughout the whole writing process
-
A5: I think there is still a beauty in writing p&p first. Assess the process of the writing and let the tech see where it takes them
-
I just got a SmartBoard in my room this year... that works through Smart Notebook?
-
A5: My students go outside and write in nature and that's handwritten, in notebooks. We handwrite journal responses daily.
-
Typing is NOT the only way to publish!
-
A5 Start on devices young & typing skills won't be issue by the time they publish. Getting better every year. Our k are on chromebooks
-
A5: through adequate conferencing throughout the whole writing process
-
A5: Focus on the content! Is the S doing this type of/genre of writing well?
-
-
Gotta write fast and furious across the page!
-
-
-
A5: writing skills can often be transferred to print. Print conventions are becoming more of a necessity to learn
-
A5: allows for students to photograph their writing and add a voice recording to share w/ the world. Publishing w/out typing.
-
A5: I still wonder about the little ones needing to handwrite so they can see their own revision work in WW.
-
Start them young...Yup! They started before K sometimes https://t.co/vHoJuKdub5
-
-
A5 Start on devices young & typing skills won't be issue by the time they publish. Getting better every year. Our k are on chromebooks
-
Publishing is when Ts can be the most creative
-
a5 Rubrics along the way to assess process, not final piece.
-
Q5: In this Digital Age, writing & typing skills need 2 b interchangeable. Typing should only enhance the writing process
-
A5. Ss need to publish digitally in order to be heard globally in the 21st century classroom, typing will help them accomplish this
-
makes portfolios easy. https://t.co/QzmAg3XW52
-
-
A5: I still wonder about the little ones needing to handwrite so they can see their own revision work in WW.
-
I agree. Multimedia is also a way to publish student work.
-
K on Chromebooks?! Would love to have 6 in each K room!
-
theres absolutely a balance between traditional and digital literacies
-
Do you think instructional models like can work collaboratively with the Workshop Model? Why?
-
A5: I also worry about just how much time little ones are spending on devices between home/school.
-
Yes! https://t.co/4GWpMRCFr0
-
-
A5. Ss need to publish digitally in order to be heard globally in the 21st century classroom, typing will help them accomplish this
-
Yes! It's a lesson activity builder in Smart Notebook 15!
-
A6: Would love more info on how a sticks with the GRR Model!
-
A5: Looking for feedback/thoughts about speech to text for Ss with dysgraphia (serious handwriting issues, neurological)
-
A6: Educlips & artifacts from , , & show
-
A5. Conferring in realtime is the best way to assessing writing skills in a 1:1 environment, on-demand prompts help too of course :)
-
Oh I'm the biggest tech used and advocate you can imagine. But sometimes non-digital is the best choice, too.
-
definitely! great for mini-lesson delivery
-
A5. Conferring in realtime is the best way to assess writing skills in a 1:1 environment, on-demand prompts help too of course :)
-
I've seen this in action! I know a teacher who films her mini lesson, Ss watch the video then practice the skill
-
going 1:1 in k next year. Crazy exciting. Def will be blended, not just tech all day!
-
Amen! As adults we get excited about a snow day. Why not let kids take a day as well? https://t.co/Qhp4e0wiPr
-
-
Virtual snow days don't work unless EVERY child has WiFI! How's about we let kids be kids. Go play in the snow!
-
-
Howdy Got a great mobile learning story to share?Would love some New Jersey educators this year at https://t.co/FRv8Xt9MiD
-
Environment, student choice, final product, my objective(s).
-
Give them access! Sharing our ideas verbally is thinking. Sharing our ideas when writing is thinking. https://t.co/0Eby4jaikJ
-
-
A5: Looking for feedback/thoughts about speech to text for Ss with dysgraphia (serious handwriting issues, neurological)
-
Just tried Clipchamp. Such an easy upload to Google Drive. Love It!
-
No matter the grade, it ALWAYS needs to be blended. That is AWESOME though. Lots of great things in store
-
What are the benefits of an inclass flip?
-
-
Agreed! However, I'd love to see virtual days as an option for long-term issues (like Sandy, etc).
-
- WOW, this is very impressive! I love this! I’ll be sharing it with others that I know.
-
anytime. and I are about to unleash on the world. Global collaborative writing project. Interested?
-
This could be beneficial with differentiation- multiple mini lessons could be taught in one day!
-
Accessibility. Students are able to go back rewatch & relearn the mini lesson at any time, anywhere, at their own pace.
-
What aspect of R&WW will you NEVER replace with technology?
-
Q7 What aspect of R&WW will you NEVER replace with technology?
-
A6. Yes! That is the beauty of the workshop model, it is so student-focused and driven!
-
is important. It's their learning and their future. Not ours.
-
Yes! Almost like a Rx, you can tell Ss what they need to rewatch, practice and then some back to you
-
Does anyone use Videonot.es from Google?
-
A7: PENS and paper. WWS gets messy! Ss should see their revision efforts with flaps, post-its, scribbles, and scratches.
-
Absolutely. This underscores the need to move away from nightly HW to longterm PBL. Always keep researching.
-
A7: Notebooks! I can imagine blending notebooks but I can't imagine replacing physical writer's NBs.
-
-
A7: Student creativity in R&WW can be enhanced, but not replaced by .
-
A7: Read Aloud!!!! Nothing beats me, my kids, and a great text being read aloud!
-
In class flip allows Ss to revisit mini lesson or to differentiate
-
A7: Additionally, paper books. Nothing beats the emotional connection a reader can experience with a printed book.
-
A7: Read aloud. And the physical newspaper (we read and discuss every day in 9th grade).
-
Q7: Read aloud. There is something magical about having students gather and listen to a story.
-
A7: Leveraging tools helps Ss work smarter, freely, & creatively to Modify & Redefine their learning in R&WW.
-
I agree. Such a special time of the day. https://t.co/PWFr1plZ1k
-
-
A7: Read Aloud!!!! Nothing beats me, my kids, and a great text being read aloud!
-
-
A6 lends itself 2 ws model bc video can be leveled n groups differentiated next day=Instant every morning
-
A7: Paper books. Luckily, my teens seem to agree. They will read e-books but much prefer the physical books in my classroom library
-
agreed! As teched up as I am, I LOVE actual books. New books make me so happy.
-
-
A7: Read aloud, hands down! One of my favorite things about being a Gr 2 teacher.
-
Absolutely! Count me in please!
-
A7 The intimacy and closeness of meeting on the carpet for a mini lesson during workshop is so precious. Never replace that.
-
-
-
-
-
A7: I don't see myself replacing handwriting with tech. Nor do I ever expect to FULLY replace any part.
-
Yes! The end user device is all that is needed.
-
is great for sts taking PARCC. Allows for analyzing videos. Good for t direct instruction too on projector.
-
R7: Completely agree with w/ READ ALOUD! My favorite part of RWW and the most valuable.
-
A7: wouldn't replace partners' discussions. Not the same with "shared" G doc or Google group
-
-
