#games4ed discussions cover ways in which gaming can be used in education. Games mirror the way the human mind was designed to learn. They motivate players to take risks and actions, persevere through failures, set and achieve increasingly difficult goals, and devote attention, time, and effort to acquiring knowledge and skills. All this while the game is tracking the player’s actions and assessing the player’s achievements and skills. Isn’t this what we want from education?
Hey #games4ed!!! So excited that the chat is back. :)
N from 🇨🇦, checking in. #edtech creator/cofounder/enthusiast.
Spent the holidays working on my own game and doing a giant crossword with the family.
Hi all! Steph fr 🇸🇬. Didn’t manage to play any games but had a great family time! Exciting year for me as my gal starts her sch this wk. Lots of crying but she still 💕 going sch. I hope her enthusiasm can last #games4ed
Hello #games4ed - Happy New Year! I am Michele an 8th grade ELA teacher in NY and didn't do much game playing but created a new game for short story unit this break
Hi all! Stefanie from Illinois. 8th ELA and team lead. Played LOTS of games: Codenames, Snake Oil, Unlock!, Tsuro, Hogwarts Battle, Jungle Speed, Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, and old school Zelda Link to the Past. 😂 #games4ed
We are starting with The Most Dangerous Game so I created my own version of The Most Dangerous Game - in the past I used @GooseChase but EDU version is limiting so teams competed to complete different tasks. I will blog more about the specifics this weekend. #games4ed
Well, for each game you buy, means a game developer/designer is able to continue to work. And you never know what purchase will make the difference to keeping someone in the community, and then making your favourite game down the road. #games4ed

Q1: It's a time of change, a time of chaos with student and schedule changes. What will you do with students the first 1-2 days to set the tone? #games4ed
I was going to pick up CodeNames but have not done so - what do you think of it, I am trying to figure out how to adapt it for 8th grade ELA. #games4ed
A1) Launch part 2 of FractureCrisis, then jump right in. Usually do a full reset but have a student teacher starting in 2 weeks so we'll reset then. #games4ed
Today I did a complete review of Semester 1 vocabulary with a cut-and-sort... following it up tomorrow with some Quizlet review, and then some games from Legends of Learning... my students have a serious case of vacation brain! #games4ed
If you are both going to be at #ISTE18 would love to chat more - planning a Literacy playground and looking for collaborators - any one with ideas or interest DM #games4ed
A1: If games are new to the class, perhaps a quick one week game to reestablish expectations. Otherwise a game to welcome them from the holiday break. #games4ed
Q1: It's a time of change, a time of chaos with student and schedule changes. What will you do with students the first 1-2 days to set the tone? #games4ed
A1 My 1st goal is to create more permanent guild structures. The 1st sememster there were too many poor alliances or Indy players. Lost some class cohesion #games4ed
A1: Set the classroom tone, focus & expectation with the Ss #OneWord Resolution for the year. Encourage them to share as a constant reminder & motivation to others. This allows T to understand each S better each yr. https://t.co/0N3ktiPb3Y#games4ed
Jestin, HS science in MI. Codenames, Pokemon TCG, Magic, Uno. Got Forbidden Island & Peptide but haven't played yet. Playing Prodigy with son #games4ed
#games4ed A1 - Always begin a new unit and kick off with game or games - next short story is Ransom of the Red Chief - will be a bit mischievous with that game
Sounds like me :) Starting off with a Breakout to introduce the new unit. With a wrestling meet tomorrow, I know I"ll be missing too many kids to get too started with content #games4ed
I agree with reestablishing guidelines for gaming upon return from a long break! Some go a little "hay-wire"... but definitely a great way to re-introduce proper brain function after comatose! #games4ed -CU
A1: feel like I got a little lost towards the end of the semester with bringing challenges in and need to get back to more frequent challenges with opportunities to use the items and spells they've earned in my HP themed game #games4ed
A2) Trying to introduce some VR into my Mars Space Exploration class! Some great Apps just released! Also trying to introduce virtual digital interactive notebooks with game links! #games4ed- CU
Yeah - as kids start I say to the class, so when your parents ask you what you did in school today, what are you going to say? they all yell "We played video games!" @gamestarmech#games4ed
I found myself struggling just in the hour I had after our inservice today--as if I'd forgotten how to move through my to do list! A good reminder of how the kids will feel tomorrow #games4ed
I think you can vote for as many as you like. I voted for a bunch - so many good ones. And our #games4ed buddy @seanmarnold is currently leading the pack :)

Low key review games are awesome after a long break! Legends of Learning has some great review games that are lowkey and low stress level to awaken the holiday brain! I also enjoy the standard Quizlet gravity review! #games4ed
A1 I want each Guild to play a board or card game for team building, social skills, and learn the games.
Ss hesitate to learn new, complex games like #Pandemic but like once they do. Also sets up for modding later in semester #games4ed
A1 I'm hoping to have items ready to pay everyone when they return. We'll be playing some review games when we return where the power-ups are helpful. #games4ed
A2: taking the leaderboard and making a physical location in the room where the house points are displayed to post the pic of the Ss at the top of the leaderboard. Would update weekly to reflect changes. #games4ed
A2 I started with the #ditchsummit@jmattmiller had in December the session on #gamification got me thinking about looking at using game through different lenses and have some new ideas about using games for supporting time management and other #softskills#games4ed
Not silly at all. There are some students who need that direct instruction. I've done the same with grammar over the past couple years. Some get it easily, but others need that direct instruction #games4ed
Glad to know I'm not the only one. One of the things I like most about #gamification is the T's ability to make changes as necessary wo game disruption. #games4ed
A2: We’re expanding some new #VR & AR creation activities with students and teachers to teach basic life skills for students with disabilities #games4ed
I introduced The Resistance to my board game club before break. It was great for this since it's a social deduction game. If you've never played it, I would highly recommend checking it out. #games4ed
Sorry @mpilakow. Will gotta leave this
chat sooner than I hv planned. Hv to focus w my crying gal in sch. Thank you for the great Qs that you hv provided. Hv a great chat! #games4ed
A2: I been looking into a lot of VR websites. My teacher just told me about wonderopolis, and I am still thinking of how to make it more game like for my students. #games4ed
A3) I need to work on complex content mastery-- my students can always get the basics, but when I dive deeper, they get lost... possibly some engineering or STEAM needs to be involved #games4ed
A3: I'm really looking to incorporate more chances for Ss to use their items. Since some have struggled to get the initial wand, I'm using a purchasing element now based on the number of house points the Ss have. #games4ed
A3: I devoted a great deal of time to setting up quests in @classcraftgame as I moved my #questbased class over - now I want to focus more on teams and the other features in #classcraft - I am pretty psyched that much of the quest groundwork is laid #games4ed
A3 have a big post on this in the works. I'm creating some enemies fights as Flip Learning checks. Will tie into my Dreadsheets boss fights. Calling it EDUPRG... #games4ed
would love to chat about using VR - do you participate in the #ARVRinedu chat? I need to attend that more often for sure. Maybe @JaimeDonally will send me regular reminders :) #games4ed
Have you looked into Legends of Learning? If you havent, you definitely should! Inexpensive and high motivator for inclusion classes!#games4ed#contentmastery#leveledlearning
A3: There were several Ts who introd games into their classrooms. I’d like to help them to develop further into the gaming classroom. #games4ed#ipadacademy
A3: I'm always looking for ways to modify college composition assignments and giving them real audience. Want to use more https://t.co/UyYVm1NLIW, add more game mechanics somehow. #games4ed
Oh, yes I created two quests in @classcraftgame this past fall and want to build more but utilize Google Classroom bettie for seamless application. Would love to know more about your quests - we can share #games4ed

A3: I always think I can become a better listener-less time with me talking-also being willing to delegate to paras & other teachers without trying to take on everything #Games4Ed
I have one kid really digging into @metaverseapp - I need to get into @cospaces_edu - do you have them create experiences and then explore in #VR and if so what headsets? #games4ed

I can never seem to get the whole "hush and let the kids speak" deal.... I need to work on that too... Hard when I'm so passionate about my content! #games4ed
I'm also adjusting to using Quests. Some of my initial quests were too involved and turned off Ss. Focusing on smaller more meaningful quests. #games4ed
Happy to share my quests - my whole class is quest based so quests are their options for assignments - in my class XP equates to their grade ultimately #games4ed
Their is a Historic Paper category with @NationalHistory. Even if you don't compete through them the outline of the competition might be a nice way to game the writing. I'm a regional coordinator and could offer tips. #games4ed
#games4ed I really want to up my game with VR and AR in the new year - our school does not have the hardware yet but trying to figure out a way to bring into my classroom for 2018
Q4: January is a month of organization. What’s your best tip for staying organized with Gamification/
Quest-Based Learning/
Station Rotation/
GBL classrooms? #games4ed
My first one was only 3 missions that I unlocked as Ss met the targets, the 2nd quest I created was more choose your own adventure style - have to change up elements to keep all Ss engaged #games4ed

A3: I have been incorporating Self-Determination theory in my class, and it is time for the students to start taking the lead. I learned from @BarryFishman the podcast, that autonomy needs to be purposeful. #games4ed

I have always been one of the more organized folk in my building... But when it comes to my desktop on my computer.. not so much! The Playlist feature in the Legends of Learning platform allows me to keep everything in one place-- which is REALLY helpful #organizedgames#games4ed
A4: For me keeping daily record of HP earned on paper rosters for each class so that I can carry them with me and then updating leaderboards at the end of the day has been a must to keep me organized and keep Ss up to date on house progress #games4ed
A4: When you set up a system that unlocks quests based on prerequisites like @classcraftgame it is easy to stay organized as new quests aren't revealed until previous are completed. #games4ed
Q4: January is a month of organization. What’s your best tip for staying organized with Gamification/

GBL classrooms? #games4ed
Huge fan of stations! I usually have 3 stations with foldables and other manipulatives, 1 station with a Legends of Learning game, and 1 jigsaw reading! #inclusion#games4ed
A4: I love having the #gamification Google Sheet created @mrmatera I don't think I would be able to stay sane AND keep track of all the XP without this tool! #games4ed
I’ve used @cospaces_edu to create daily living practice activities for students with disabilities. I’ve had other teachers start putting together some and we just mounted HTC systems in a few rooms for after break-slow network is an issue #games4ed

A4: Honestly, allowing other people in to help you. Having a partner in the school and even allowing students to run some parts of the game can make a palpable difference in how well stuff works. #games4ed
A4: I've always used a daily agenda on Google docs for organization, but I swear some students never read it if they miss a day. Using new Classcraft quests, I want them to get a better overview with the visual! #games4ed
A4: For station rotation, have set locations for each station. This is transferable to QBL and other gamification aspects. Physical routines for Ss help for quick rotations! #games4ed

A1: Lucky for us, the @edu_il (MOE) is organizing a cyber championship! I teach Digital Literacy so we'll be doing a lot of @CodeMonkeySTU :-) #games4ed
The new feature on Legends of Learning allows to schedule playlists for use OUTSIDE of class time-- which is great for kids who want to play at home! #games4ed - CU
Yes! I have a quest for students to use it and it is an option for their final game - one student is creating their final game with @metaverseapp :) #games4ed So much potential as a game design platform even beyond AR!
A3 Working on my next Gen of Pokemon mod. It uses biomes for ENERGY and real animals and taxonomy for "evolutions" of Pokemon. I'm getting a few Energy cards printed from https://t.co/Kr26AhJSya#games4ed
Learning Stations are a great strategy to keep Ss engaged and apply understanding - playing around with hyperdocs to make more virtual station work #games4ed
A4 Keeping things digital with @classcraftgame or @legendlearning is great. But hands-on manipulatives are also essential but harder to organize. Everything must have its place! #games4ed
Hard but so worth it ... keep pushing through... #games4ed Secondary students need teachers who look for opportunities to do things relevant and interesting but differently - even when they have to work with in 'the box' #perspective
A3: People are always complaining that my classes are noisy :-( I teach next to the principle's office, and she came to my class 3 times already! I need to do something about their noise level. #games4ed
A4: I keep track of all my XP, gold and other exchanges on sticky notes on my seating chart then enter everything in at the end of the day. Nothing earth-shattering, but it helps me keep up with all the data work. #games4ed
A5: Anyone interested in using digital game-based learning to improve literacy skills grades 3-5 (higher for special ed.) should check out Sydney's World. #games4ed
I think of how the item will work in a game that we use frequently so that the Ss will actually want to earn it. For instance, we have a dice game that limits the words they can use as a response. There's a spell that allows the S to "unlock" a reroll. #games4ed
I like stations if for no other reason it gives the Ss an excuse to get up and move. Those brain breaks are so important. I am always on the lookout for mini-games to play to break up the seat heavy days. #games4ed
Yeah! Cool! My main challenges are like in the movie - Meeting the pack, Surviving with Baloo.... So side quests can be visiting different animals in the Jungle.... #games4ed
I jumped over to @classcraftgame mid 1st semester. Handles a lot of former spreadsheet work. I knew how to use sheets, but time involved in my homebrew version was too much. I made a few quests & kids were begging for me. Trying to tie in better w/GClassroom #games4ed

A5: I would like to develop a set of Digital @breakoutEDU games that could be overlaid to enhance Vocab/spelling units for elementary classrooms. #games4ed
Yes, the movement is essential with brain compatible learning and if the stations are arranged by different learning styles taps into all student learners #games4ed
It's especially cool when kids get into the quests which prompts furthering the quest lines with student input! #games4ed - I have kids write up what the requirements for the quests should be :)

There is a time of quiet as well. Just often not the case when games are being played. They generally require communication. When a kid gets triggered tho... #games4ed
Good point! Teacher In-services are good reminders of what it's like to do so much sitting in a day...Ss need chance to move too (whether they admit it or not) #games4ed
Ive done it both ways. Usually for random choice they roll a die that connects to the number of the card. Other times, they can quest for a particular card. #games4ed

Try some content mastery games or entry level introduction games from Legends of Learning- they always seem to quiet my kids down because they are so focused on competitions with eachother! #games4ed
Q6: You can’t just focus on the students—you have to focus on you as well. What PD do you want to pursue? (Books, blogs, conferences, concepts to study) #games4ed
That's true about the silent classes. About the noise level - If it's kids having fun ON TASK then great. But if they're just goofing around or fighting, well.... Not. #games4ed
A6: I try to do Edcamps as frequently as possible. The passion and ideas that I get from them recharge me. If you haven't been to one yet, I highly recommend them! #games4ed
A6) I would love to do some PD on engaging low motivated students, as well as, how to tap into the growth mindset of students who just wont budge from their roots! #games4ed

A6: Looking forward to upcoming book club for Lifelong Kindergarten. Plus conferences--ISTE, Summer Spark, GIE...and @MatthewFarber book when it FINALLY comes out!!!!!! #games4ed
A6: Not covered by my district, but I'm hoping to attend ISTE this year, especially since it's so close to me, be part of this chat more, continue with #xplap and #tlap chats and add a few PD books #games4ed

Q6: You can’t just focus on the students—you have to focus on you as well. What PD do you want to pursue? (Books, blogs, conferences, concepts to study) #games4ed
For me the focus on self management - developing environment where agency is an expectation . . . first engagement then empowerment - so ultimately they manage their own behaviours #games4ed
I want to be more regular with my blogging as well. Thanks for the reminder. I also want to goe move involved with AR/VR and coding. What resources are you using? #games4ed
A6: I also think continuing to present at conferences, working on more vlog and blog posts, continuing the #sketch365 challenge all help me continue to grow as a T too bc I'm also learning from others and reflecting during that process. #games4ed
Some of my students used it last year as last week of semester projects. They had a blast--some did it after they had finished their first project, just for fun! I think Matt Farber had Ss use it for creating alternative histories #games4ed
Q6: You can’t just focus on the students—you have to focus on you as well. What PD do you want to pursue? (Books, blogs, conferences, concepts to study) #games4ed
Yes, the TBR pile on my nightstand is growing exponentially, I would love more snow days to catch up on reading and then see my next book come to fruition #games4ed
A7: Sidequesting. I seem to start to cerate a side quest that thend evelops into a full fledged QUEST. How to keep things smaller or know when to stop! #games4ed
A7) Would love to be able to create a database to show all of the different gaming platforms that can be used for different topics within each subject.. I know it is far-reaching, but... organization is key and would help planning! #games4ed
Taking way over the top pictures of students enjoying the top rewards and sharing them with the non-participants brings me more joy than it should. #games4ed
