#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Serving as your moderator this evening is yours truly. As you arrive, can you identify something in your home that you would consider diverse. #FLEdChat
We pause for a moment to reflect and direct our hearts and hands to the educators, students and other stakeholders who are recovering from the adversity of Hurricane Michael. #FLEdChat
A1) I grew up in Broward County and come up through (and worked as a teacher @browardschools), diversity was and still is one of the great aspects of growing up and living in #SouthFlorida, which I did for most of my life #FLEdChat
A1: Diversity is much more than just ethnicity. It's also about thought processes and a variety of experiences. We need a variety of opinions and people willing to think outside of their own boxes. #FLedChat
My classrooms, both as a student and a teacher, had students from all different backgrounds and cultures many bringing with them their own lenses with which to view school and education in general, learned a lot along the way including from many of my coworkers as well #FLedchat
I'd agree with you. I grew up in Hallandale (right on the county line pretty much, but in Broward) and the school was diverse, teachers and students. Where did it go? #FLEdChat
You are right Tammy. I was recently involved in a timely conversation about talking the talk but yet not truly making it real. I hope we can move forward with it (big picture) #FLEdChat
I grew up in Sunrise and Lauderhill so know Hallandale well, I think growing up in a melting pot such as Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach really broadens your horizons and allows you to appreciate diversity even more #FLedchat
I guess you might say we were fortunate to grow up seeing diversity as part of our learning because it was all around us. How do you think that those who may not have had such an experience can also gain? #FLEdChat
Adversity helps realize - this issue or event doesnโt define you. โThis too shall passโ and provides motivation to do better or different with an opportunity to get past it. #Fledchat
I hope so. I may not have recognized the need when I first started teaching, but very quickly into my career it has become one of my goals to cultivate in my students. Has not always easy (or popular). #FLedChat
A3 When we find our way through it, we can better understand and relate to others in similar situations. For me, I think it grows as an individual to be more reflective the next time I'm faced with an adversity. #FLEdChat
A4 #FLedChat I have more patience than I used to have and deeper understanding that thinking and being different from each other makes life more rich. Helps prioritize whatโs truly important
#FLEdChat
A4: Adversity has taught me my strengths and weaknesses as a person. It allows me to realize how I act under stress but also different ways for me to deal with it. As I have said before, the challenges we face help shape us into who we become despite the challenges.
Kimberly, I complete agree. I also love how you say "find our way through," suggesting that we can't always go around it (like driving) or over (like flying), sometimes we just have to go through it and see what needs to be seen. #FLEdChat
Ooooo! Reality checks. I have been there. I will be the first to admit that I am weak in some areas too. If it wasn't for the adversity I may have never seen it, you're right. #FLEdChat
A5: I have a variety of titles. Human, Christian, Wife, Mom, Teacher, friend, cousin, Aunt, Citizen, learner, just to name a few. Each of these bring a part of the picture. #FLedChat
A3- adversity has influenced me in a way making me stronger, allowing me to push harder when I have difficult and stressful-times in my life. Also made me become more tough mentally. #FLedchat#edfb4338
I really do love this. The position I want to always see myself in is as learner. That way I am always a work in progress, always growing and developing. #FLEdChat
Q6: โOpportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.โ Joseph Campbell - How might we conquer adversity with diversity?#FLEdChat
A6 #FLedChat having support from others, gaining from their perspective not only of the situation but of me from an outsiders view vs the one in my own head. Helps reframe and provides opportunities to think differently.

A5 - โwho am Iโ I think that I am Learner of life as I live- adversity has humbled me, which is a reason I am Greatful and a thankful person. #FLedchat#edfb4338
A6 We need to surround ourselves with diverse humans to gain insight and perspective to better navigate our situations. Having this diversity allows for us to see our adversity in new light & opportunities to conquer it & grow from it. #FLedchat
That is so true. Our support system works so much better when it encompasses a variety of mindsets and opinions. No one can do survive in absolute isolation. WE all need each other. #FLedChat
TRUTH! Those that might look at my situation from a different lens and be able to offer input that I can't due to their vantage point. Whew! I almost got chills! #FLEdChat
When having to push harder from adversity could mean anything, for example, when classes are getting tough, and I know my ultimate goal is to graduate, now I have to re-evaluate myself to do better ( no procrastination) #FLedchat#edfb4338
I love it. Reassessing a situation and evaluating what it might take to find success. What a valuable skill to have and be able to pass on to our students! #FLEdChat
A7 #FLedChat diversity > being supported > can create strong identity and confidence which feeds unity when people can be their full selves to support others in their time of need or struggle. Help them become stronger, full unique people
#FLEdChat A6 3 years ago, we started our Varsity soccer program at North White. It has brought our school together. Our Latino students have become immersed in our school culture.

I'm not sure if this will come across well or not, but if it weren't for the closed minded people in my life, I wouldn't have realized how incredibly WRONG they are. For that I am thankful for their backwards thinking. #FLedChat
A7: Seeing how unique talents and perspectives are needed to make things happen helps us embrace diversity a come together to accomplish things we couldn't do alone. #FLEdChat

It comes in loud and clear! We can almost look at that as "adversity" - sometimes "adversity" comes in our lives and shows us what/where we don't want to be. #FLEdChat

I just love seeing students overcome challenges and they can with the help of great educators like you. I like upsetting the odds and the stigmas, it fuels me! #FLEdChat
.@dene_gainey I want to thank you for some amazing questions tonight. You always make me think and dig deeper into my past to make my tomorrow even better. #FLedChat
