Welcome everyone to #XPLAP Tonights topic is a little different and I like it. Please introduce yourself and share your favorite lawn game with us here tonight.
✨🎉Hey, #XPLAP Crew! I'm Kimberly from NE, and I teach 7th grade ELA. I'm so excited to 🐝 here with you! I don't play favorites on games, love them all! It's always about who you're playing with more than the game itself! 🎉✨#XPLAP
I remember playing chicken with those in the 80s. Whoever stayed in the hoop longest won the game... and sometimes free stitches. #XPLAP#CanadianHealthCareJoke
DianaLyn from Texas. Does a water ballon fight count? I am hoping to participate as we drive home through Oklahoma but my coverage may not cooperate. #XPLAP
Hey #XPLAP, I’m Dwight from the beautiful Adirondacks & I love playing Cornhole, Bag-O, whatever y’all call it regionally. The bean bag toss into the hole or onto the wooden platform.
Hi, Michael! Such a fun game! A couple of my students at last year's entrepreneurship camp made this game to sell as part of their business!!!! #XPLAP ✨
A1: I did a challenge on the history of whaling where Ss had to build a harpoon and take turns trying to harpoon the remote-controlled whale for XP & a badge. #xplap
I'm Owen, teach CS in K-5 in San Francisco, I haven't played a lawn game, except pick up my dog's poop, in decades, don't really have a favorite #xplap
A1 We do a lot of catch in the classroom. I have a bunch of different types of bags/ koosh balls & others. I also do physical components of my game like lumberjack contests and mammoth hunting. #XPLAP
A1: Grudgeball, using questions & then an opportunity to shoot a basket has been a favorite game to play while reviewing. Students definitely love that added element of quasi-athleticism it involves. #xplap
A1: when I taught in the classroom, we played lots of review games with movement like baseball and kickball where they had to answer questions in order to get a turn... #xplap
Hey everyon3. I'm Micah, a Spanish teacher from Indiana. My favorite yard game is 9-Square, similar to 4-square but played in the air. This is my first time to #xplap. I'm looking forward to a good conversation.
A1: Have any of you ever heard of Battle Ball? In the game, teams work together to knock over the other side's water bottle. However, players can get out like Dodgeball. Embrace your old favorites and put a new twist on them. Take the action outside and make it strategic. #xplap
A1. Trashketball has always been a hit in my class. Classic and excited to use in the context of a gamified classroom this year. The students love it, and I'm sure there will be more investment when XP is at stake! #xplap
A1: Last year I sent out a "March Madness Temptation" to 8 random students. It mixed trashetball and XP... I also did galloping board races for my Knight's Academy. #XPLAP
A1: I like using a physical task to have Ss unlock a question or task. It creates a field day like experience that’s a lot of fun while still requiring a skill focus. Love combining a scavenger hunt element to digital escape rooms for physical activity too. #xplap
A1: Not really game related but my kids loved doing the mannequin challenge connected to poems. One student would read the poem while everyone else struck a pose connected to the poem. The videos turned out great. #XPLAP
A little thing I do is bring a koosh ball as I'm waiting for kids to transition and will toss back and forth w/ students as others arrive. It's a little thing but kids really like it and it speeds them up. #XPLAP
Sounds a bit like castle dodgeball, hula hoop castles which are to be knocked down & potentially rebuilt by each team. If all three of the other team’s castles are down, you’ve won! #xplap
A1
🥎🏐🎱🥏🏓🏸
Any kind of physical game can become relevant when smashed with content! For our Teen Lit Olympics Unit, we played all kinds of crazy games to get Ss MOVING! There is so much brain based research to support movement in the classroom! #XPLAPhttps://t.co/fQukfrYkAt
Levels of questions unlocked by landing on the board or in the hole? When one person makes it in the board for their team, a question or task is unlocked. Whole team has to make it through? #xplap
A2 I was just thinking a review game w/ the giant lawn jenga would be fun. You could also have a card or power that forces another team to take your turn when the tower gets dicey. #XPLAP
I think you will find a nice home in #XPLAP they are a wonderful group of doers... They really do put into practice all that we preach here... This is the greatest internet think tank ever! There I said it! Enjoy my friend and welcome!

A2 I teach computer science, when I teach sequence and algorithms to K-2, we read a book called Bug Dance and do it together, then Ss write their own dance algorithms and teach each other, not a lawn game, but movement oriented #xplap
A2: I like the idea of croquet where there are review questions or challenges attached to the wickets & each time you hit your ball through, you must complete the challenge or answer the question or your ball goes back to where it was. #xplap
A2 I've also seen indoor versions of bean bags, that I'd like to come up with a game for the classroom. Maybe teams could earn a bag for each question they answer. #XPLAP
A2: it could be fun to have a safe zone in the room@where kids can takes a rest, but in order to score they would have to move out and take a risk. Just playing with ideas here. #XPLAP
A2 3-5 Ss do a variation of @codeorg's Getting Loopy lesson where they analyze a dance to find the Loop then write their own with a Loop and teach it to the class #xplap
I think it’s 4 hula hoops, one as a base, two leaning into one another, and a third over the top “locking” the two leaning into one another in place. It’s stable enough, but precarious. #xplap
I def need some ideas, but more how to put it into practice, plus I teach computer science, but only have classes 1 time per week for 45 minutes, so need help around those limitations #xplap
A2: lawn darts meets bags meets frisbee golf. Plastic circles throughout area denote the course. Bags used. Land on plastic score, land in hoop score more. Before you can throw at the hoop, pull a ? from envelope to answer. #XPLAP
What if your teams spanned across your sections… That way each group is motivated to talk with other class periods and care what is happening in the game. #XPLAP
A2: I'm thinking modifying the typical catch by using a Koosh Ball. One student would start the game by throwing the ball to another student. If a student dropped it, he/she would be out. I would also add fun rules like having to throw it with the opposite hand, etc. #xplap
A2. In Argentina, there is a sport called Pato. It is a mashup of polo, basketball, and soccer. I had my students play it a couple of years ago while riding stick horses. Man, high schoolers can do a number on them.
#xplap
Or answer question in under 10 seconds...3 bags, under 15...2, under 20...1 bag. Points just like the game but academic answers get you more shots. #XPLAP

CORNHOLE
❤️🌽❤️🌽❤️🌽❤️🌽
Students love playing cornhole in the classroom! We add up the # of correct answers on an academic activity and that # = the amout of throws that a team earns, but there are a million ways to play! #XPLAPhttps://t.co/Wa7ns7tgBx
A3: My Bocce idea was a question early, but I stand by it! Kids could block by earning a block after getting two in a row or something like that. #xplap
Bumped into a couple of parents whose child was in my class this past year. They mentioned how the “Golden Skull” was a hot topic of conversation, their daughter had been calling her friends, making alliances & pacts on her own time. They thought it was great! Games work! #XPLAP
A3: Could have an item that allows you to move closer to the target or get an extra “ball” to increase your chance to knock your opponent out of the way. #xplap
I'm planning to start with the 4th and 5th grade classes, that is 6 total, and I def want to get Ss talking across their classes, that is one of the WHY's for using #gamification for me, and building momentum between classes #xplap

This is a fantastic idea @IamEricNichols Thanks for sharing this one with us all. I am pretty sure I will be adding this challenge to my game next year. Thanks so much… #XPLAP
Or answer question in under 10 seconds...3 bags, under 15...2, under 20...1 bag. Points just like the game but academic answers get you more shots. #XPLAP
A3 Maybe you could play a math version of bocce where they would earn regular points, but then teams could each estimate the distance and the best estimate would also score points. Could do it with marbles on felt. #xplap
Levels of questions unlocked by landing on the board or in the hole? When one person makes it in the board for their team, a question or task is unlocked. Whole team has to make it through? #xplap
I am going to be helping run the Physical Computing Playground in our upcoming Digital District Day, highlighting some of the tools we have to lend, so that could be my Sphero activity #xplap

I so agree @dwsteven I just got a parent email today saying that their child loved my class. Best of all, the side quests changed their relationship with their child. They loved working and learning together. It is a game changer! #XPLAP

Keep it indoors, set it up in the classroom. Rather than the gates, have masking tape circles on the floor they have to program the sphero into. #xplap

Not enough people used the Spheros last year so it could be a way to highlight them, what if there were a CS vocab word in one wicket and the definition in another and you had to go from word to def #xplap

This sounds like a great way to get the “provokers” excited to play the game. Give them a way to sabotage the others. Is this the group that is typically the least engaged? #xplap A3
A3: Draw a huge target in chalk outside with numbers written in rings. Each team gets to throw a ball into the ring. You get that number of words to “sell” something you learned. Best sales pitch wins. Bullseye you get to take words away from a group. #xplap
A3: A3: Using the koosh ball from my previous answer, I would put my stool in the middle of the classroom. Students would have to make the koosh ball land perfectly on top of the stool. Note, my stool is pretty narrow. Students could bump other koosh balls out of the way. #XPLAP

2 steps to the left, 2 steps to the right, hop forward, hop backward, turn to the right, then repeat it 4 times, and magically you end where you started (yes I've taught it like 20 times) #xplap
A3: I feel like @Slapshot99 could come up with a sweet way to adapt curling for the classroom and to use the idea of “bumping” an opponent out of the way. Curling on desktops maybe with eyebrow brushes, desk polish, and some flat, circular tokens? 🤣 #XPLAP
When you add lower grades I wonder if you could have partner classes with older students. Having an older kid tell you you did something awesome can build some much confidence. #xplap

That could work, I'm going back to the classroom this coming year, and I'll be pushing into Ts rooms, so I'll have to see what's possible, advanced prep won't be easy to do #xplap

I kinda did that with my kiddos at the beginning of the year, but totally missed the gamifciation piece! For sure leveling that up this year now that I know better! ✨#XPLAPhttps://t.co/8XJPzk5hnF
Thanks everyone for another great #XPLAP chat... Remember that our chat is only a 30 minute chat... Feel free to stick around after and chat. I love this community. You guys are the best! See you next week!
I just picked up this game Codinca, which has some of this bumping & pushing while trying to get the tiles into a position which matches your cards. Looking forward to bringing that into class this year. #XPLAP
A2: Could you bring beanbag toss into class as a challenge against teacher. Students vs teacher. Top performers or most improved get to faceoff one round vs teacher. #xplap@mrmatera
My students love playing would you rather/ going to different sides of the room. Several students called at random to defend then students can choose to switch sides. Another game is Scoot. #XPLAP
A2: lawn darts meets bags meets frisbee golf. Plastic circles throughout area denote the course. Bags used. Land on plastic score, land in hoop score more. Before you can throw at the hoop, pull a ? from envelope to answer. #XPLAP
If you are at a public event..as a coach or T or participant, please consider asking those present if all pets and children and rode with them in the car are out before you begin. It seems silly, until it isn't.
It can't hurt. It could save a life.
I actually love corn hole! I think Bc it’s kinda like skeeball, but outside. And this 70s baby has played skeeball in a few arcades and skating rinks. 👾 #XPLAP
Thanks for another great #xplap! Wonderful to be able to connect with you all on a solid internet connection this week. Likely won’t be able to join you next week as I’ll be “across the pond” but looking forward to our next chat!

A3: I teach robotics, and recently completed a #PLTWCT in Automation & Robotics. One of our projects is to gear robots to speed to an area and stop with a specific are. Kind of like bocce ball. #xplap
ANOTHER FUN 💡 : Academic Dodgeball!
Going to remember to play this game OUTSIDE this year when school starts! It was definitely a student fave, and great exercise (academically & physically) too! ✨#XPLAPhttps://t.co/6jFpUuiAxD
My favorite yard games involve frisbee. I'm not very good and them but enjoy it nonetheless. Bit large for classroom use. Maybe use those small cloth frisbees? #xplap
It was a year end review scavenger hunt quest which took students to digital clues & puzzles in the online class materials, to physical clues throughout the school building, and eventually to a locked box which two teams faced off to figure out the combos to unlock! #xplap
A2 it’s always great if you can adapt a game to meet a classroom concept that is being taught. I have students figure the answer - it has to be right - then move to a selected activity. The students are working together as a team which is always a great thing. #XPLAP
The game spanned the final 3.5 week’s of school ahead of the final exam, and was a huge hit. Students were emailing me on weekends in June. They were problem solving, collaborating, competing, and showing a ton of grit & perseverance at the end of the school year. #xplap
Q3: I like elimination-based games in the classroom. Competition breeds teamwork, elevates engagement & rigor/grit. “Survivor” or “Amazing Race” themed games for standards review have employed these game traits well for me! #XPLAP
If you're throwing things indoors, you should totally check out #Flingons! They stick to anything magnetic (whiteboards, sides of filing cabinets, etc)!! #XPLAP
I’m yet to bump into a parent since school got out without it coming up. It’s pretty amazing. I went from “I’m going to try this thing” to a full convert in the first few days of the game. #xplap

A3 I had mentionedpoison pen earlier and when they play this if they get out they get to go back in when another person gets out. So it is like a revolving door. We use a timer to help with this too. #XPLAP
Thanks, Louie! I was just thinking about this episode today while I was listening to @mrmatera's newest #WellPlayed podcast (67) on gamifiying PD (brilliant BTW)! ✨#XPLAP
It's also perfect for PE, or any sports conditioning on a raining day, or any day really. Whatever color ball you get hit with = a conditioning exercise (burpees, push-ups, jump rope, run, etc..) #XPLAP
