#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Hi everyone, excited to guest moderate the #personalizedpd chat tonight! Introduce yourselves and share what your favorite holiday movie is! Love Christmas Vacation :)
A4: Start small by introducing a 1 or 2 micro-credentials. Ts will get excited by the process and help build momentum. I think there needs to be honest and open conversation about what Ts need and how they can own their learning #LFVAchat#personalizedPD
A1 Some kid made decorations, my Deck the Halls singing duck, and of course holiday music! Did you know DMX covered Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? https://t.co/5DC3C8UHHf#personalizedpd
A1: I like minimal decor, high organization. I add S work up as the year continues. Usually looks like a mess, but organized. Also, flexible seating at specific times of the day were a hit! #personalizedpd
I do like seeing Ss work up and it can also be used for reviewing or teaching materials later, and flexible seating is great, gets away from my rows :) #PersonalizedPd
A1: I have various school t-shirts that I have purchased to raise awareness in the building. Serves as a constant reminder to all students. #personalizedPD
A1: This year I went all in with what I wanted! Had Ss decorate my windows, made paper chains, and a snowman inspired Christmas tree + lots of lights! #PersonalizedPD
Yes, I have Christmas lights around the room, on cabinets, looks awesome when lights off and viewing a movie, or just working in small groups, it is bright enough, or so they say :) #PersonalizedPd
A1 when I had a classroom I did it all opposite of how I would now- store bought, themed, pinterest perfect. Now I would have authentic student work that shows growth. Anchor charts created by Ss for Ss. #personalizedPD
A1: I have tried to create a lounge with limited space - ottoman, armchair, stools - comfy seating and choices! I also use a diffuser and have lamps for nicer lighting! #personalizedPD
A1: No holiday decorations, but last year my AP Gov class had a Holiday Fundraiser Party simulation & worked the vocab into the convo while playing various gov roles #personalizedPD#tlap
A1: As a principal I like having positive quotes in my office and things for the students to do/read. Stress balls, coloring books, puzzles....I want it to be comfortable and inviting. #personalizedpd
A2: I make it a point to be at my door and greet every student as they enter! I also love using my bitmoji to greet students and introduce the learning for the day - gives them a great glimpse into my mind for the day! #personalizedPD
A1 My good friend and keyboarding teacher Glenn Thomas used to decorate his room with inflated palm trees. Whenever a student was having a bad day, they were invited to spend time in “keyboarding island”. @BirxCbirx#personalizedPD
I've started leaving sticky notes on student writing in the hallways. The kids LOVE it! Ts, Ps, even Ss can comment on each other's work. #educoach#personalizedPD
A2 Be transparent w/ what is going on! We use #peqpantherpride to share great things and welcome everyone into our schools and classrooms each day. #personalizedpd
A2: I have custom playlists for the incoming classes. It's been the coolest thing! I also have a scentsy that the students choose the smells for the week! It's the little things! #personalizedPD
A2: A different song is playing each day as students enter. Sometimes it relates to what's going on in the world, the day of the week, or other stuff! After Thanksgiving...all holiday music. #personalizedPD
Our kinder teachers will text me when they put new writing up because the kids enjoy it! So many implications for building a culture of growth and celebration. #personalizedPD
A2: I greet students at the door of the school every morning. High fives and hellos! "Have a great day....time to make some magic happen!" #personalizedpd
A1- I hang things for the season around the room and kids love seeing it. I also have their work/projects take center stage. Having grades 2-6 they love seeing what others have done! #personalizedpd
A2: I simply say, "Good morning." to them each day. I have a good, positive attitude each day and I think that my Ss like the calmness and stability of it. They even say it back to me! When they don't I say, "In this country, it is normal and expected to respond"
#personalizedPD
A2 It’s all about relationships! Anything that makes them feel comfortable and safe. For some that is greeting them at the door. For others it’s giving them the time and space to settle in. But for all of them it is knowing them as individuals and showing you care #personalizedPD
A2: I like to start the day with calm. Before the day even begins, there is so much to do. I liked having calming music (or a video of an orchestra) playing on the smartboard and greeting students as they came in. Flexible seating started right away with reading. #personalizedpd
A3 Different activities for Ss, definitely having them moving around, not just sit and get, play games, teach peers, a variety, and also music #PersonalizedPd
A3 I like to "season" the lesson as I go w/ frequent formative assessment. That way I know to add a little of this, skip a little of that, and tweak the ingredients to make it come out just right! #personalizedpd
A3: student-centered, activities, inquiry - keep students on their toes and thinking! Definitely working towards #TLAP as much as I can! #personalizedPD
What seems to be 90% of students walk the halls with headphones in during passing time, even when they are with their friends. How they hear them, I'll never know with as loud as their music is. #personalizedPD
Agree. Lately, I have holiday music on and the sound of a real fire place in the background. I also have a fireplace heater in my room. A little ambiance helps.
Today a student said "It is so calming in this room."
Thanks @jbretzmann#personalizedPD
A2 It’s all about relationships! Anything that makes them feel comfortable and safe. For some that is greeting them at the door. For others it’s giving them the time and space to settle in. But for all of them it is knowing them as individuals and showing you care #personalizedPD
A3: start by building relationships, add some engagement, sprinkle in some discussion and collaboration and a pinch of feedback. Top it off with some reflection and BAM #personalizedpd
Knowing the Ss, some don't want that F2F interaction but rather a subtle head nod or something to check in, others need to talk, why it is so crucial to build those relationships #PersonalizedPd
The stability of a caring adult is needed by all kiddos. When they know what to expect, they can settle into content, learning, and growth. #personalizedPD
Oh my, I had one playing a song and I said, "hmm, I wonder if Coolio has had any new songs lately", they almost fell out of the chair, surprised I could hear it and knew it :) #PersonalizedPd
PREACH! I cannot believe how loud the music in their ears can get! I warn them all the time and try to explain to them how hearing works... you can lose it! #personalizedPD
A3: It has to implicate deep learning. How is the learning related to the real world? Does it touch on student passions? Will it make a difference? #personalizedpd
A4 Students are working in small groups, rotating through activities, with a side of direct instruction, mostly about Ss interacting and building skills together #PersonalizedPd
I was at a PBL school, so my classroom was loud in the middle of a lesson. And no group was doing the same thing. We worked in stations that were organized based on the PBL unit we were studying. #personalizedPD
A4: I'm at a new school and teaching new curriculum (and a new baby!) so I'm trying my hardest to work towards student choice! Collaboration and investigation using tech - pushing to higher levels of thinking! #personalizedPD
A5- choice is what gets students wanting to do things at home. Knowing they can showcase their learning any way they choose often has them doing more than you expected. #personalizedpd
A4 Let the students select the "main course" of the lesson. We supply the meat and potatoes, but if they select the cut they'll be a lot more likely to finish their meal! #personalizedpd
A4: The main course of a PD session for me as an admin is choice driven where educators are working together on something related to the topic we discussed. Edcamp style is the way to go for teachers.....genius hour for kids.... #personalizedpd
A4: In the gradual release process it is all about the "you do it alone" self discovery and learning is what is working for the students. #personalizedPD
Have been amazed at how the Ss have been working this year on last with #pbl it really opens up so much for them, the other Ss, and for me, #PersonalizedPd
A4 I’m working with a T and her class to create a video book reports using WeVideo. Some students can choose to use storyboard view or timeline view. @WeVideo#personalizedPD
You better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout I'm telling you why.
It's time for the #Lurker shoutout! We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
Don't sit there on the outside looking in! Share your great ideas. Join us, or not, it's cool.
They have told me that before- that they like that they know what they can expect out of me each day. I make time to connect with at least one S per class period and check in on them.
#personalizedPD
I agree! So many of my students surprised with me with how much research they did outside of school... just for fun! One student even made a big poster diagram of her findings over a weekend. Not assigned. Not even extra credit. Other S were really interested, 2! #personalizedPD
Parenting a teen has shown me the importance of calm in their life's storms. Everything always seems so dramatic...Consistency matters. #personalizedPD
I know, they do a ton, one of mine recorded @Flipgrid as she worked on it, then embedded those and her resources on a @padlet and presented, it was amazing #PersonalizedPd
A5: In the Professional Driven model, we celebrate the process of turning instructional weaknesses into strengths. in the Reflection phase. #personalizedPD
A5 Celebrate EVERYTHING, even failures! Use those as blocks to build something greater. Remember, when you reinforce a behavior, it is more likely to occur again! #personalizedpd
A5 Lately, have been celebrating my mistakes, taking risks and then working through the challenges, pulling Ss into discussions and talking abt it being ok to make mistakes, celebrate it all #PersonalizedPd
I've seen your pic all over my feed today - jealous of everyone getting inspired by you today! I have picked up the #TLAP book recently to get motivation and energy! #personalizedPD
A5: I celebrate everything I can - student was finally prepared, student made the team, my baby rolled! Ss should know that we care about academics and beyond in their life! #PersonalizedPD Hoping my use of @classcraftgame next semester increases celebrations!
Yeah. To be honest, I don't like quotes. Ss see those posters so often anyway it is visual white noise.
They don't want an inspirational poster, they want an inspirational person at best and a kind person at least.
#personalizedPD
You talked abt not being a fan of inspirational posters- Be and feel those things instead of have a poster about it. That is how you build authentic relationships and inspire others.
A6 Engage Ss in learning, have fun and build skills, so many options from tradl board games, Ss create games, and of course @quizizz@GetKahoot@quizlet#PersonalizedPd
I do love celebrating! Was thrilled on recent quiz, Ss did best had ever done, was really great to see and hear from them that our new station rotations and activities are helping #PersonalizedPd
A6 Games add so much value to the learning environment- competition, collaboration, critical thinking and strategies. I love the idea of gamification! #personalizedPD
I have always loved learning, I got Ds and Fs in geometry for half the year in 1985, I still remember the material, grade does not matter, need long term knowledge and application #PersonalizedPd
A5 we celebrate learning and achieving Ss goals. I have a pile of Mardi gras beads that I pass out when Ss show grit, perseverance, or effort. We call them warrior beads and they wear them as a way to show everyone that they tried their best #personalizedpd
A6 Play = learning. Winning/achieving in a game is reinforcing, so playing a game makes you want to do it more (and learn more). I like long play strategy personally (4X games) but any video game will do... #personalizedpd
Last weekend my 11 YearOld said he stinks at free throws. I said that's not very #growthmindset.
He said, "I stink at free throws, yet."
:) #personalizedPD#TrueStory
A6: I loved games for math when practicing number sense, subitizing, math facts, etc. etc. One deck of cards = tons of games! Add in dice or dominos and you have more! #personalizedpd
A6 games foster collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. Ss provide instant feedback to each other that helps strengthen skills and minimize misconceptions. I love things that are low prep, high engagement. Cards/ dice are my go to for math practice #personalizedpd
A6: I designed a 1970's game this year for my Modern US class. Got great feedback from kids on what they liked and how to make it better. That was the best part for me. #PersonalizedPD
A6 have enjoyed the new features with @GetKahoot for the creative name generator, so much fun yelling out who is Brave Panda, Creative Mouse, #PersonalizedPd
A8 I wish I had pushed more to get @FRSNewJersey Future Ready Schools certified, would have great PD opportunities! No worries though, going to rock it this year! #personalizedpd
Best use for it that I've seen so far has been Blind Kahoot. Use it to introduce a topic and watch feedback to see when it's clicking for Ss. #PersonalizedPDhttps://t.co/I13C5VDWgb
A8 Note to self, as referenced in response to @kylelaurie A6, numbers do scare me, because I skipped Q7...thinking fast... why??
wait for it..... #PersonalizedPd
My favorite quote of his is "If you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." Always gets me out of self-doubt and back on track. #personalizedPD
Haha!! Mine used to end up at the bottom of my purse. Nothing like crossing off items from a to-do list that is a month old. haha! #personalizedPD I have a new system now. Not quite as satisfying.
Thanks for a great chat everyone and for @Rdene915 for moderating! Remember to follow those with ideas you find interesting or challenging! #personalizedpd
Yes, I love that quote, had it written on my board for a while, use quotes on the side board, give Ss some things to think about/discuss #PersonalizedPd
