Good evening y’all. Elyse in TX. Social emotional educator. One thing that keeps our school going is the greetings. From good morning to checking in, it matters. #bookcampPD
My name is Derrick Schellenberg. I have been teaching high school English for 20 years. Currently I am a technology enabled learning and teaching contact at my board. (TELTc) #bookcamppd
Steph! Aren't Morning Meetings just the best? I love sharing graphics of discussion topics that could be used in MS/HS as I believe they would be a culture builder if they were held there as well. #BookCampPD
Hello #BookcampPD friends!!
I’m Emily - HS ESL teacher in NC
What I do every day to promote a positive culture is say “hello” to every student and staff member i see as I go through the building #CultureMatters
Our school, led by our administration and specific teacher groups, has given teachers and students the opportunity to improve the school, including designing specific spaces in and outside of classrooms. This enables voice, empowerment, and inclusion. #bookcamppd
Hello #bookcamppd joining in from Pittsburgh, I try to greet all students at my door, I play upbeat music, make efforts to have interactions with as many students as I can, not just the ones in my class.
Hello #BookCampPD! Tika, a 2nd grade teacher and mentor, from Las Vegas excited for this chat! 1 thing I do is give handshakes and/or hugs to every student I see. I tell our kids, who are late, how excited I am to see them.

I see among my new team at curriculum and instructional services a desire to volunteer, to help when help is asked for and (even better) to offer help when it is not requested, a willingness to support project leaders, and overall selflessness. #bookcamppd
Would you like to help share the message of #BookCampPD with a magnet or sticker? Just send me a DM with the address you would like it sent to, which you would prefer, and I will drop it in the "snail mail" to you!
Hi, #bookcampPD! Diane, Elem Principal from CT. Our hashtags - #momauguinproud and #TeamMomauguin help promote a positive school culture when shared via social media.
Julie, Schl Psy, I'm on PBIS committee, try to learn all Ss names, greet Ss by name whenever possible, collaboration, and getting into classrooms! #bookcamppd
A1: Listen to them. Model risk-taking so they will be encouraged to do so. Learn about their strengths/challenges, Help them find their passions, strengths, develop SEL skills. Offer voice/choice, ask open-ended questions. Develop their curiosity. Believe in them. #bookcamppd
What it really means is that I support teachers with their use of online platforms (LMS like Google Classroom, #D2L and Moodle) and digital tools. #bookcamppd The acronym is silly. Imagine having to use it each time you introduce yourself :)
A1 I ask them to further explain something, and definitely by doing PBL, I enjoy hearing their ideas and then giving some pushback to have them think differently too #bookcamppd
A1: One way to get to know students as thinkers is to engage with them orally. Whole class will give a shallow glimpse. Small groups, pairs, and conferences will who much more. #BookCampPd
A1: In my small groups I ask Ss to share thier thinking and ask others to expand on anothers thinking. We work together to support one another when we can't always find the words. #BookCampPD
A1: I provide plenty of opportunities for students to interact with one another as I go around listening. I also use @Flipgrid for studets I share with me their individual thoughts and learning
#bookcampPD
A1: show them that people learn from mistakes. be a great listener. Work off of their strengths. Believe that they can do it. Have high expectations. #bookcamppd
Q1: I love stopping by classrooms and sitting beside students; asking them what they are learning; and watching them collaborate with their peers. It shows me their thought process, level of confidence, and shows how well they listen to others. #bookcamppd
A1: Another way to show student thinking is using a graphic organizer. Rather than providing a template, have students construct a mind map, concept map and label their connections. #BookCampPd
A1: Invest time to get to know the students beyond the surface level. I'm blessed as an Ag Teacher to do home visits to students agricultural operations. These visits let me see the wheels at work in the students' mind and the goals/dreams they have for themselves. #bookcampPD
A1: I think this is where conversations and observations can be really powerful. I love working in small groups with students where this can be really easy to do. #bookcampPD
It is different every day, I made a playlist and asked students to submit their favorite songs on a Google form, sometimes 70s,80s, 90s and present day, always fun #bookcamppd
I think problem-based learning is a pretty powerful way to get students to engage and share in their thinking, depending on how students are engaging in the experience. #bookcamppd
A1: It's important to watch students and give them opportunities to show their thinking. Also, better questions help us to get better answers and also generate new questions from our students? Their questions are what really matter #BookCampPD
I love this, Rachelle. I also incorporate these strategies into my SEL lessons. I love hearing Ss feedback and incorporating in subsequent lessons! #bookcamppd
A1: A great technique would be to give students a chance as individuals to capture their thinking first in a way that works for them and then have them explain to a peer, teacher, do a screencast or use #Flipgrid#BookCampPd
A1 always enjoy the conversations each day, even about their other classes and asking questions, so much to learn from them and I appreciate their perspectives #bookcamppd
A1: I get to know students as thinkers by working with them in small groups and 1:1 as much as possible. This allows me to tailor my instruction/questioning/have my S. Explain (or Show) me their thought process/way of doing something. I also observe them a lot!! #BookCampPD
A1: Morning meetings- Ss share thoughts about topics of the day or classroom issues. Also during number talks, small group instruction, lunch bunch book talk, individual conferences and everyday conversations #BookCampPD
Very cool. Intriguing if some aspects were competitive. Could be done both on a micro (within a single lesson) and macro (over the course of a unit) level. Could be done individually, in pairs or in groups/teams. #bookcamppd
@JulieGB7 Immerse learners in an environment where they feel confident and free to take risks. Knowing they learn through mistakes is an essential part of facilitating great learning opportunities! #bookcampPD
A1: There are lots of tech tools that offer opportunities to show thinking including padlet, wakelet, Google Form and Twitter. These allow sharing thinking with peers. #BookCampPd
A1: Data gives us numbers but getting to know our Ss stories is important. Spending time really listening to them, getting to know their interests outside of school, using those interests to hook them in the classroom. Listening is the best way to see how they learn. #bookcampPD
A1: Having students respond organically to questions (oral/text/online) can help, but having them construct and pursue questions can be even more powerful. #BookCampPd
Definitely. That’s why I ❤️Number Talks and Socratic Seminar. Ss want to ask questions with these routines and protocols as long as a #GrowthMindset and a safe space has been modeled. #BookCampPD#LeadWithCulture
Hello! I’m Marcella and I teach 2nd graders in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. I love greeting boys and girls each morning. I try to greet everyone I know by name, whether they were ever in my class or not. #bookcampPD
A2: Sharing our story on our soc media pages. Involving families, S Council projects, connect w/local comm. resources to help those in need, district back to schl picnic, evening events, home visits for our incoming kndg Ss, learning to spk Span. to improve my comm. #bookcamppd
A2 the school connects with the community on different projects, shares the happenings of the school on the website and social media, is very supportive of working with members of the community #bookcamppd
A2: Since joining #TeamMomauguin a few short months ago, there have been lots of opportunities for family involvement - meet & greet, open house, field trips, at home projects, & social media #BookCampPD
A2: connecting with out community is what we are working on. Our community cares, but we only get support for "fun" activities. As a whole anything that looks like "school" they don't come out for. #BookCampPD
Our social media is very active too. My favorite was having guardians send in pictures of their children reading that were then shared on our school Instagram! #BookCampPD
A2: Our School invited a few community professionals to come in and provide words of inspiration with a group of 9th-10th graders! #inspire#Spidersimpact💛
#bookcampPD
A2 We host some activities and events for the Ss and their families throughout the year. This is an area that I think we can do more though. Building strong and positive relationships between home and school is so important. #bookcampPD
A1: Our environment is a little unique and very non-traditional. Conversation is the centerpiece of what we get to do each day. Through formative assessments, stop and chat conversations, I am able to gauge what students know and what they are struggling with. #BookCampPD
A2: One way to connect with your community is to have multiple channels of communication: email, weekly newsletter, Twitter account, open house, parent-teacher night, performances, sports events, etc. #BookCampPd
A2: We had a wonderful Veterans Day celebration and we have parents and community members in all of the time. The school should be the center of the community #BookCampPD#LeadWithCulture
Yes! It's important to share when we make mistakes as the adults too! My Ss and I have learned so much from each other as I learn Spanish and some of my Ss learn English together! #bookcamppd
Q2: I love conferring with my Ss about that they are reading and writing. And my Ss LOVE to share their thinking and strategies they used to solve math problems and mysteries. #bookcampPD
A2: @JulieGB7 You are the leader of our connections to the community! Our very active Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram feeds keep us connected so well! We also have @ExperienceCorps volunteers, many charitable collections to support those in our community. #BookCampPD
A2: Our school tells our story on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! We share pictures of learning in action, we share reminders and important events. We also ask parents to share back with us and share learning experiences that happen at home. #bookcampPD
Awesome for reflection, book talks, responding to a prompt, etc. Could even be used as practice for what will later be oral sharing with peers in formal or informal ways. #bookcamppd
Everyday I greet students and staff with a hug, smile and genuinely make eye contact. I tell each student I see that I am glad they are at school that day #bookcamppd@MsSalvac@emilyfranESL
A2: One way we connect with our community is through our Ag Program's 'Career Success Day Tours'. We go visit alumni from the school who started businesses or work at businesses to show the diversity of opportunity for students! It is always fun for both parties! 🥳 #BookCampPD
A2: Bringing the community into the school is a great idea. Finding ways to have students participate in community events (or giving back to the community) can also be meaningful for everyone. #BookCampPd
Our school connects with community with literacy nights, @CCSD_FACES events and welcoming them to our school with a smile everyday. #bookcampPD#LeadWithCulture
My Littles were fortunate enough to have her be a participant in a Friday afternoon @GoNoodle!! Always makes me smile seeing adults get down with Koo Koo Kanga Roo! #BookCampPD
In reply to
@JulieGB7, @diane_mackinnon, @GoNoodle
We are working hard to tell our own story and showcase the great activities on twitter and fb. Kids sharing video is priceless! Educating parents in Twitter is a must. #bookcampPD
A2: our school does a great job of inviting/involving parents for various events! our fire dept visits every year during fire safety month. The 5th graders also take part in the DARE prog & we’ve had officers read to our classes! That involvement is so important! #BookCampPD
"Telling our own story" is such a great idea, helping you to forge your own identity and take control of the narrative involving your school, your students, and your community. #bookcamppd
A3: Share passions w/Ss & others. Show your excitement! Before/After schl prog's, infuse creativity into my SEL lessons, hands-on learning, listen to what Ss are passionate about & incorporate, do more of what I love (collab. w/staff & in-class interventions w/Ss). #bookcamppd
A2b: We are working on a career day this spring. Ss will dress up as their future selves and parents and community members will come it to share their working lives with us. #bookcamppd
A3: I share a lot about my passions here, I talk about what I see and learn on Twitter with Ts and implement many things in hopes to get them a bit more excited too. #bookcampPD
A3 We go to conferences and I apply to have Ss present to educators, and a big part of what we have done is PBL and that has been a great learning experience for everyone, #bookcamppd
A3 We offer a variety of clubs and extra curricular actives throughout the day so that there is something for everyone. We also try and use student interests and passions in the classroom to support engagement in their learning. #bookcampPD
We had monthly community meetings with about 35 representatives. In order to get them sharing and talking with each other, I created a Jeopardy game with answers about the community. They were rolling on the floor with laughter and enjoying it. #BookCampPD
A3: Engaging in diff. channels (formal and informal) allows sharing of passions and can infect others. Engaging in learning with small (dept/team) groups and large (staff) groups can enable sharing of passions while allowing people to pursue aspects engaging to them. #BookCampPd
A3 Always need to share our story, talk about what Ss do, what we are doing, our wins and near wins, and I talk about what I have learned by being connected with my #my53s and #4OCFpln#bookcamppd
A3: I share my passions by talking with my students and letting them know how important it is to be passionate about something. I listen to students and their passions. I talk about life-long learning and the importance. #BookCampPD
A3: By sharing who I am and getting to know the kids and the teachers, we can then use what we learn to make school better. I'm passionate about learning and growing. When we find out what others are passionate about, we are open to their genius #BookCampPD
I adore this idea by @aaron_hogan so much I created a graphic so I could share it again and again. Great to have everyone participating in sharing the ideas. #BookCampPD
A3 Share on social media, on my blog https://t.co/l6nPKPfiBN and working on some books, thrilled to have 1 of my students writing a chapter!! :) #bookcamppd
A3: This year with our Pineapple chart having an open door, any time policy let’s other faculty members drop in and observe whatever, whenever they want. I play the role of cheerleader for my students, encouraging them to explore their passions! #bookcampPD
A3: Teaching is my passion - so anytime I can include creativity, new learning / experimenting, it makes me a happy camper. Happiness is contagious! #BookCampPD
One idea from Penny Kittle is that English/Language Arts teachers need to engage in reading and writing themselves to convey their passion to their students. Engaging in writing a novel for a month (#NaNoWriMo) is one way teachers can explore what writing is like. #bookcamppd
Yes, Derrick. Multiple channels is important for us too, especially when there are challenges for families with internet access, phone access, and other barriers such as language. #BookCampPD
A3: My passion is writing. I share it with my students frequently. I talk about it and discuss how I am putting my dream and passion into action. I share my excitement as well as my challenges. This has inspired many of my students to want to pursue their passions. #bookcampPD
A3 I share my story with my colleagues and students. I encourage risk taking by my students and encourage others to see out their passions often. Constant encouragement for all. #bookcampPD
A2: With a new Superintendent, we have been exploring new methods to tell our story. One of the most amazing methods so far was a community back-to-school bash in the parking lot of the mall. People from all over the area joined the fun...even from other districts. #bookcamppd
Yes, it started as a short vignette and I told her that I thought it was amazing, and suggested she just talk out loud, let it record text in a document and go with it, it is around 2000 words now and is awesome #bookcamppd
I appreciate you and the other teachers who have opened their doors to me as a first year teacher. So much wonderful teaching going on in my building & I am lucky to be able to watch all of you! #BookcampPd
I love this idea (another name for it is instructional rounds). Teachers need to see teachers in action without judgement, allowing conversations regarding students and best practices. Important to develop as part of a school's culture. #bookcamppd
Hi, We structure in open stations including our county library so our Ss can get a public library card. We have a photo book, book tasting, bookmark making, and phonics games. #BookCampPD#LeadWithCulture
A4: Biggest joy this yr: G-parents' Day! Day2day: a.m. greetings (they matter!), know Ss names, show Ss how happy u are to see them, fun/hands-on experiences, celebrations, hugs, a.m. dance parties, #teammomauguin assemblies! Share S pics on soc media pgs rdg @ home! #bookcamppd
A4 I love greeting students at arrival with music and a smile, hugs and high fives in the hall, and popping into classrooms to see the awesome daily. #bookcampPD
A4: Being a strong community as a faculty brings joy to the students, everyone has been so welcoming and warm to me & the students also experience this #BookCampPD
A3: I have a passion for writing. Growing that voice I've been willing to share those passions more! My Ss have opened in sharing their passions and goals. I've been working with one young lady to advocate for water conservation & she just presented at a workshop!!! #bookcamppd
A4: I believe the most critical way is by being positive and creating relationships with ss and staff. With both of those, the building feels comfortable and safe. #bookcampPD
A4: Share cupcakes on special occasions and for no reason at all. It’s amazing how doing something small, spontaneous and generous can positively impact school or classroom culture. #BookCampPd
A4: Joy comes in many forms but you can certainly see the joy these in these kids when I let them go out in the first snow last week. They were so excited #BookCampPD
A4: Joy to me means engaging in authentic and meaningful work for both the teachers and the learners. Empowering people with choice and voice in their learning is key. #BookCampPd
A4: One of the most joyful times of day is our school wide morning circle time. Every child does it in their classroom and it really shows our students that they matter everyday. Little things too like smiling, high fives, whale tickets! #bookcampPD
A3: I am passionate about teaching and my excitement is what I hope inspires others to explore their passion! I think excitement rubs off on my Ss. As well. Also give my students a lot of choice in order for them to discover their passions/interests #BookCampPD
A4 greeting students, I play that music, our school has a student created news show, always fun to see, and we are focused on building relationships #bookcamppd
It is important to finding what is important to you within your school/work setting, engaging in learning around your interests, and sharing that joy with others. If we as educators are going on those journey it is easier to infect students with the same joy. #bookcamppd
A3b: Reading is another passion! For students, the more they read, the more they know and get to experience. Can help our Ss get lost in worlds, adventures and experiences that they might not really get to experience. Trying to promote a culture of literacy everyday! #bookcampPD
WOW! That sure flew by in the blink of an eye!
Many thanks to @JulieGB7 for guest moderating and to everyone who was able to join in to share their passionate responses. You are appreciated!! #BookCampPD
A4 And there are a lot of events planned throughout the year, some weekly or monthly, spirit events, kindness events, food drives and other schoolwide activities to connect #bookcamppd
A4: I open my door every morning with a huge smile and enthusiastic "Good Morning". I greet every child with a special handshake that they created for the two of us. It definitely starts the day off right and with a joyful attitude. We follow it with morning meeting. #BookCampPD
A4: What brings me joy is when the students are so excited to come to school and learn. When the teachers are willing to take risks and make learning amazing. And, when families join us in celebrations in our school #BookCampPD
A4 We have @ronclarkacademy houses and the positivity and the cross grade level support is amazing. Our school believes all of our Ss are our Ss. We help & support each other. #BookCampPD#LeadWithCulture
Would you like to follow those in this chat or others that you participate in?
Easy! Just follow the directions below and you can "follow" as many as you would like. #BookCampPD
One aspect of being in #BookCampPD 's #PLN is that following each chat you will be "tagged" in a tweet with the link to a @wakelet summary. Here are some from previous chats https://t.co/H1wN8J57BG
Relationships with all stakeholders is vital for people to feel valued. Feeling like someone belongs (teachers, students, parents, administrators) allows them the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and rise to their potential. #bookcamppd
It is true ... our conversation about this fantastic book continues again next Sunday evening when the author @JayBilly2 joins us!!
How lucky are you to be able to ask him questions and read thoughts of amazing educators about ideas in his book? Hope to see you then! #BookCampPD
