The Breakfast Club – #BFC530 – is a 15 minute, 1 question Twitter chat every weekday. We chat in 4 timezones Mon-Fri – 5:30am Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Times. The mission of BFC is to empower participants to make a difference in education by engaging in consistent reflective practice in a supportive community that inspires and challenges one another.
Good Morning friends. How is everyone today? Power back on? We kept loosing internet yesterday. I was supposed to have the Ss present their International Projects to parents; had to reschedule for today. #bfc530
Happy Friday! Difficult conference yesterday, two more rough ones today 😳 On the upside, only 15 essays to go on this week’s feedback & grading marathon! #bfc530
I am so grateful for our daily gathering, at this early hour! Let’s do the Friday happy dance, in gratitude! Our one-week March Break begins after classes today! Looking forward to a break! I’ll miss all of you next week! Off for a run now. Peace! #bfc530
Oh boy I think I'm discussing the difference between collaborating and cheating every day. I encourage collaboration. Copying and pasting somebody's work, however, is not working together. It's like I need to make a PSA video on the differences #bfc530
Good question! First of all, have to make expectations clear - can’t blame the kids when I’m confusing! I often encourage working together and conversations, but ask for separate notes or individual product. This is another example of when grades cause frustration #bfc530
Fine line between collaboration and cheating ... starts with a “C” we don’t really talk about ... Contribution ... are the kids contributing toward the outcome or just ride big along. #bfc530
Hi friends! I have a delayed opening today that may well turn into another snow day if power isn’t restored by 7am. And did I mention I can’t drive to work? Downed power lines at the foot of my driveway can’t be repaired until tomorrow — maybe #BFC530
My kids are collaborating most days. However, collaboration has several different versions. At the beginning, everyone is working together to the end goal. When we are preparing for assessment, we shift to individual work and then compare answers to teach who is wrong. #bfc530
Almost, made progress in the kitchen. I'm glad I had the snow days to work in the house, but with the kids at home I couldn't accomplish as much as I wanted. #bfc530
Hmmm, I believe two, three, four and more heads are better than one-unless we are calling it a “test”, collaboration isn’t cheating, it’s better learning though team work! #bfc530
We have to remind folks stuck in that mentality that our goals should be for students to know how to address problems together, communicate effectively with each other, and solve problems through shared responsibility. They won’t get there unless we let them practice it! #bfc530
I think we need to look at grades differently. We also need to teach collaboration more. All students need to be responsible. We can’t just put a group together and say go.. one always does all the work. #bfc530
We have to make sure students value the work and the process. My kid has SO much group work - whether she enjoys it or not, depends on what the other kid brings to the table. #bfc530
I think to move past the whole “collaboration is cheating” concept we first need for those in the top levels of admin to move past testing as the only means to assess student learning. #bfc530

I think people worry about individual accountability when collaborating... how can we still ensure all students are making progress towards understanding? #BFC530
We need to create the opportunities for collaboration, but there is always a need to know where each individual student is at and how to help them also #bfc530
I honestly haven’t encountered anyone who felt that collaboration was cheating. I do think we should encourage and allow time for Ts to collaborate and create more multi disciplinary opportunities. Modeling ourselves is one way. #bfc530
#bfc530 Good Morning and Happy Friday. I have PD all day today. Have not seen #students since Tuesday because of the weather. Cannot wait for next week.
Fair enough. It's Liverpool in this household
Or Melbourne Victory in the men but Melbourne City in the women. And now we are switching to Portland in the NWSL. #bfc530
Yes and I remember when my child’s grade depended upon someone else’s work..I tried to discuss with the teacher, but they wouldn’t hear of it..so in order to get a good grade, my child had to do most of the work. #bfc530

One doesn't always do the work for me, but the same few always assume the leadership role. This is part of collaboration process, learning how to jump up to a leadership spot. #bfc530
In first this isn’t an issue. They’re excited to be driving the learning and to help each other. I just found another plus for my grade level:) #bfc530
If there is no "answer", but instead they have to create & improvise, you eliminate cheating, all they can do is collaborate. I think a lot of this has to do w/our lesson design. IMHO
We do problem-solving (in math) & brainstorming (in other classes) at the chalk&whiteboards. One marker or chalk & it switches periodically so everyone takes their turn & one person doesn't take over.

I hate grades. Just hate them. It doesn’t help that I wasn’t brought up here and just don’t connect with this grading culture. Ugh. “Is this graded?” and, “Is this summative or Formative?” might be my most hated questions. #bfc530
True. Heading in early to prepare since I lost days & trying to figure out how to attack the make up days during break knowing it is possible for > 50% of my students not being there #bfc530
We do an activity where students identify benefits and drawbacks of being in a group, and then choose behaviors that are important but challenging to them. #bfc530
Agreed. Cheating would be copying work, I hope a teacher wouldn't be upset if Ss worked together to build understanding. Teaching each other = learning #bfc530
We need to get away from assignments with right and wrong answers and give students work that involves exploration, trial and error, discovery, opinions, and conclusions. Not easy to cheat on that stuff, but collaboration would sure come in handy. #bfc530
I agree. My Ss are just finishing a STEM project. They collaborated but each had their own individual product planing and evaluating pages to complete for the project #bfc530
No worries my friend. I’ve missed so many #bfc530 mornings this year. I’m praying I sleep better this trimester. Mark and I have 2 more times this month so Craig can focus on his new baby. #bfc530
Depends on the assignment, but I give choice. Some Ss prefer to work alone. However, there are times when they need to work as a group as well. #bfc530
They do a good job walking through from the beginning and asking "what did you do there?" Then explain where they went a different direction and they take off to make it right. #bfc530
We’re happy to have you whenever you are able. We had some education students from New Zealand last night. I thought it was cool that their T is having them start a PLN. #bfc530
I totally agree with you! I hate grades so much! If we have high expectations and kids are meeting them, why do they need to know if they are a 2 or 3!
Where are you from?
#bfc530
I do History projects ... sometimes the kid's real contribution is the physical building of the project and not in writing the bibliography. Focusing on the strengths and just separating out the work. #bfc530

One way to fix is to allow collaboration, but each student my apply the skill to a different project. For example, in my class they collaborate on poetry analysis (finding fig. lang, identifying rhyme scheme, etc), but each team member has a different poem to analyze. #bfc530

The New South Wales Education Standards Authority, is the State Govt agency that sets Syllabus, Accredit Ts and issues end of school Certificate (HSC). All Ss in Gr.11 are required to do “All My Own Work” before they can enrol in their HSC. https://t.co/e5EjLDYRFr#bfc530
Most of my collaborative assignments involve a lot of critical thinking. As every day passes, I realize how much time we have wasted by not giving them enough of these opportunities at school. This starts in primary. #bfc530
Sleepy and optimistic:) Did you get my text awhile back? How are you handling the snow? I’m excited for @whalen and Kathy’s new family member coming soon:). How are you? #bfc530
I was just saying on international women's day yesterday that was i never had a man or snowblower shovel me out - and it only makes me stronger! ( plus helps with my push-ups !) #bfc530
I understand that, but can we honestly be mad if we create an activity that sets the kids up to cheat. "Define these words" is like setting a bucket of candy out a Halloween ... some kid (or small group) will take it all. Can we be shocked? #bfc530

Not surprised you give choice, Kathy! I know for some kids group work is sheer torture & I wonder how much that affects their overall investment in the task. #bfc530
Such a great approach. It's what we do in real life! I get stuck on something and walk down to a colleague for suggestions. I'm always happy when people stop by my desk for help. #bfc530
Oh man..that is rough..did you get a February? We only had two days off, so I am looking forward to April. But, we are going to school until June 20something. #bfc530

Have a fantastic Friday friends! Be grateful and share your gratitude, it is in the giving that we receive, so go and collaborate! We are all ways better together! 😊 #BFC530
I did sorry, I have been sick for over 3 weeks and not getting a lot of sleep, so I have been off social media for a while, but getting back to speed. Snow not as bad in So. Jersey, more a pain then anything ! #bfc530

I used to shovel all the time, but now with a shoulder replacement, heavy snow is not good for it.
You are a strong woman my friend and you are teaching your daughter to be a strong independent woman!
#bfc530
we had a 4-day weekend in February and I *think* we're looking at a 3-day in April. We go until 6/22 with NYS Regents testing (no classes, just exams) #bfc530

Thanks #bfc530. My schedule has been difficult this year. I appreciate that your support never wavers and you’re always there during both the calm and the hectic times. You inspire me daily. @ShiftParadigm
Well that is a good reason not to shovel snow! My dad had the same surgery so he tries to sweeping away but you can't sweep this much snow !! But thanks, she actually climbed up on the van yesterday to help me clear it off, yikes ! #bfc530

Sorry I missed the chat this week. Nor’easter hit us Wednesday. No school wed or thur. Today is in service and I am presenting on #tech tools and #GoogleClassroom#bfc530
How do we teach integrity? Clear expectations? Discuss the difference in class. I’m interested in this “collaborative testing!” @Laurier@SteveMacNeil9#bfc530

Take away individual tests, allow kids to collaborate whenever they need to, teach them what collaboration is - they will need to unlearn that collaboration does not equal cheating. Don’t mark the final product but assess their ability to reflect on the process.
#BFC530
Cathy Bruce’s thinking has often helped me with this Q.: “Providing Ss with a framework for interaction, Ss can be guided towards working as a learning community in which sharing math power extends understanding and leads to higher achievement” https://t.co/AIBAmJSFbh#BFC530
Morning, #bfc530. Proposed litmus test: Is this approach helping me do the work & learn, or is it helping me avoid the work & not learn? In partner or group settings, former might indicate collaboration; latter cheating. Another influencing factor: what the work is.
