Good evening #PLN365 I'm so glad you could make it! Intro yourself and tell us a fun fact about yourself as we get this chat on Social Emotional Learning started!
Good evening #PLN365 I'm so glad you could make it! Intro yourself and tell us a fun fact about yourself as we get this chat on Social Emotional Learning started!
A1 some would say "integrated" but I feel it could be SO much more...and should be; these are success skills proven to be more predictive of success than academic "success" #pln365
A1 It is part of some of the activities we do, we have homeroom mentoring groups and work on this as part of that, and I push to provide opps to build #SEL in my classroom, @Peekapak is a great resources for Ts to check ou #pln365
A1- We do both. SEL is for 9th and 11th grade, and we try to infuse teaching the soft meta cognitive skills into all lessons. Unfortunately, this was one of the early casualties of funding cuts a few years back.#pln365
A1: We embed it into our school days. Our prek uses @ConsciousD, which I would love to see used building wide! We also use the @EnergyBusSchool 7 leadership principles. Every class begins the day with a morning meeting.
#pln365
A1 I work at the secondary level, and for our students, SEL is integrated. I’m considering some model lessons that would build student SEL across content areas. #pln365
A1 Okay, so just kidding, now that I'm reading responses, I'm changing my answer. One grade level is using @ConsciousD and we're taking it school-wide next year. #pln365
with the amount of ACE(s) all kids, no matter SES, come to us with this is a matter of MUST HAVE not 'be nice to have'--if you don't know ACE scores, look them up #pln365
A1: Integrated all the way! Whole group SEL on-demand lessons and small group centers instruction within the literacy block. #youmatter#restorativecircles#growthmindset all a part of our daily teachings. #PLN365
A1 we have integrated model of academics behavior and social emotional from PreK-12. Work in progress! Lots of work on trauma informed this year! #pln365
A1: We are moving toward being a trauma-informed district. There is not a curriculum, per say. Many of us have been to conferences, workshops, and trainings. My PreK curriculum does have a social-emotional piece to it. #pln365
A1: In the lower grades moreso. Responsive classroom is popular. The upper grades sorely need revisiting. Groups of teachers are warming up to the idea. #pln365
I believe that #SEL is part of the program in the sense that we help Ss to develop these skills of SEL and then through the SWPBIS, it reflects/rewards/acknowledges the positive behaviors/interactions that stem from the SEL , if that makes sense :) little wordy #pln365
Hi Jon! I’m curious how secondary folks address SEL—I’m thinking the elementary folks may be ahead in this area. And I think SWPBIS may address SEL, but I’m not sure that it definitely does. #pln365
should def be part of the culture of the school; and Ps are responsible for the culture of the school per @ToddWhitaker...this is not an "extra" thing #pln365
A2: I feel like we target too many things and overwhelm what few resources we have. HOWEVER, if we addressed SEL 1st, some of the other issues may never develop. #pln365
A2: Standards, grades, accountability in teaching curriculum and assessments... but making SEL a priority since the NEED is there. Need to show the way! Model the value. #pln365
A2- The biggest hurdle is that it is not part of the district curriculum. Therefore I try to implement brain breaks,be a trauma informed class, pick therapeutic writing topics and use #growthmindset infused through all lessons.#pln365
A2: I think the biggest challenge is not whether to implement or integrate SEL, but how. We have implemented a district wide committee of all stakeholders to determine how to best support our communities needs. @JoannaKlopfer#PLN365
A2: I think the consistency of making it part of every day. Morning meeting time, for example, can’t be skipped due to a busy schedule; consistently among classrooms and schools. #PLN365
A2: I feel like we target too many things and overwhelm what few resources we have. HOWEVER, if we addressed SEL 1st, some of the other issues may never develop. #pln365
Do you do that as a requirement or as something you want to do? Do you think teachers need more training on integrated it across curriculum or would you prefer a specific curriculum? #PLN365
A2: Just popping in! Akilah, Professional Learning Specialist, from VA. In my role, I feel the biggest barrier to implementing #SEL is perception-so many people do not realize how essential it is to cultivating the whole child-and the whole school. #VBHasJoy#pln365
A2: It is a mindset of priortization. School cultures that value the whole child before they student will naturally consider SEL and relationships as the starting point. #pln365
A2: I’ve had the opportunity to work in a few districts, and it seems that one possible hurdle is the understanding of SEL and why it matters for Ss—so I’ve generally begun with PL for Ts. #pln365
A2 The biggest obstacle is time. I wish teachers realized that the time they put into SEL would make the time spent on curriculum that much better! #pln365
A2- in the past, the biggest hurdle was subconsciously blaming students for being behind in their academic and SEL skills. I overcame the hurdle with the wisdom of my colleagues who pointed out that addressing these skill deficits was precisely my job as the educator.#pln365
Q2: Time. I am going to advocate for more full day k and more pre-k. Children need to play and I want to support them. With the current pace of our curriculum I don’t have time. #PLN365@EMercedLearning
A2: Those that feel they need a packaged resource. I believe it needs to be created by the staff for the students and adjust as students needs arise. "Read" your audience! #pln365
It is a part of our required Advisory curriculum (30 min-each Fri). I would prefer to have training on implementing more SEL in the CR setting. #pln365
A2: biggest huddle could be the emphasis on curriculum leaving no “time” to truly get to know students
Maybe somehow embed SEL in daily curriculum might help 🤔
#pln365
A2: Changing the mindset that believes curriculum must be "covered" in linear fashion without being in-tune to needs of learning climate. Choose quality of instruction over quantity of content covered. #pln365
Needs to not only be school wide but district wide! We all need to speak the same language! We all need to be trauma sensitive and infuse SEL throughout the school day at every school! #PLN365
A3 SHAPE America has objectives for this domain; PE lends well to managing conflict, regulating emotions, demo self control, etc....whether or not it is actually practiced consistently--we are working on that! #pln365
A3: Kid determined goals are the best way! When the child and teacher go back to review goals, it forces reflection on why or why not goals were met. #pln365
A3: Self-monitoring checklists for students, time for reflection, and teacher conferencing are ideal ways to track and monitor student progress. #pln365
Do you think the push for academics over SEL causes the strain on time? Where can we begin to do a push back on the emphasis on academics over base level skills? #PLN365
A2 I think consistency is a big hurdle for me. Its easy to get caught up in curriculum and forget this crucial component. I need to always be mindful of my students' SEL needs #PLN365
many adults don't have these skills! How are they supposed to teach them to students? How can Ss practice SEL while sitting at their desk, silent, working pen to paper? #pln365
A3- I monitor student growth through targeted SEL goals. I do this monthly. We set daily goals and reflect on our progress at morning check-ins and at afternoon reflections. Also- monitored through IEPs. #pln365
#pln365 The best way to support my SEL students is to tell them “I see you, I hear you” through our 1-minute check ins I keep an open dialogue with my students- let them know they are in a safe haven
A2: Don’t see it as a hurdle but rather a necessity. It’s a part of what we do. Relationships are based on knowing how to react, respond, and reflect on all social interactions. Without SEL, all other knowledge won’t matter. #PLN365
Yes! I am more of the "teach the theory and a few tools" kind of advocate. W/so many variations in Ss and classes a boxed curriculum can't meet ALL needs in ALL situations. #PLN365
A2 I think consistency is a big hurdle for me. Its easy to get caught up in curriculum and forget this crucial component. I need to always be mindful of my students' SEL needs #PLN365
Formative Five @TomHoerr asks us to 'think of 3 ppl we consider successful and list why...' rarely does academic skill/knowledge creep into the top 5 #pln365
I think “need to understand more” is one of my life mottos. 😂 I’m not as strong in SEL as I’d like to be, but I think about it in terms of building Ss self awareness & strategies to manage the self & work with others. And what each Ss needs for that varies. #pln365
#PLN365 A3 great question...i don't think report card standards cover all the skills I'm trying to work on. Some are lumped together that shouldn't be. I know...but is there a better way to track and communicate with parents?
We have portions in our primary levels that deal with working w/in groups, self-control, etc. They are lumped with the work habit skills. The emphasis is definitely on the academics so many Ps and Ts don't attend to that area like I wish they would. #PLN365
A3: It needs to be. Here at our school we measure it everyday with student behavior. The ability to transition back to the neighborhood school is key in identifying their successes in this area. #PLN365
A3: In my role as a Professional Learning Specialist, I ensure that I'm intentional about #SEL in my #JoyfulPD (#JoyAmbassadors Quarterly meetings)...we always focus on #SEL topics (kindness, gratitude, empathy, perseverance) #pln365
A3: I’ve used a students strength assessment in the past that both teachers and parents took about their students. We used this information to collaborate and create goals and supports for their students. @ApertureEdu#PLN365
Yes! Same here! There are so many situations that it would be impossible for a boxed curriculum to show Ts how to meet S needs/ The theory helps you understand HOW to meet those needs. #PLN365
Quite a few. More each year. The PreK program has money budgeted for training. There's an amazing conference coming to Kansas City in April called "Bridging to Resilience." I am blessed to have been asked to present at it! #pln365
A3: SE growth is “graded” as a part of our report cards but the real monitoring is in the self-regulation, peer interactions, and increasingly observable positive attitudes displayed by our students. #PLN365
#pln365 The hurdle is building a relationship even when they pull away and are hesitant to bond. I resolve this by taking baby steps, supporting them unconditionally and listening intently- helping them feel safe- and making them laugh & build trust with respect
many adults don't have these skills! How are they supposed to teach them to students? How can Ss practice SEL while sitting at their desk, silent, working pen to paper? #pln365
A3 Morning Meetings are important to helping students feel like they beling and are valued. Taking time to LISTEN to students is key.
Set goals together and help them reflect on their goals. Praise the positive whenever possible no matter how small #PLN365
A4: our character ed program is a huge part of our district culture and is shared throughout the community. It is a district-wide initiative and we are a National District of Character. It’s a big deal for us #PLN365
A4- I stress to my graduating seniors that what makes college and work life difficult is not necessarily the academics, but the ability to make the right choices without someone reminding you. We need the academic mastery combined with the growth mindset. #pln365
Start with building relationships - try to understand them ask them about their child - share your experiences and the child’s reflections based on what they are comfortable to share #positiveintent#pln365
normal...SMH; no such thing right? if you haven't read 'the End of Average" it is a must...if you're teaching to the average child you are reaching nobody #pln365
A4: I think we all need to improve communication without pointing fingers. This is one of those "It Takes A Village" topics. Parents + Teachers + Community #pln365
A3: SE growth is “graded” as a part of our report cards but the real monitoring is in the self-regulation, peer interactions, and increasingly observable positive attitudes displayed by our students. #PLN365
A3: One of the rockstar teachers I have the pleasure of working with @MissG_ LTHS uses student reflection to create quarterly progress reports. Tomorrow, I'm going to see the students in action working through this process. #pln365
Is this something we can share on Seesaw? (More in younger grades?) Sharing positive experiences throughout the day? Can SEL really be assessed by way of a letter on Report Card? #pln365
#PLN365 A3 great question...i don't think report card standards cover all the skills I'm trying to work on. Some are lumped together that shouldn't be. I know...but is there a better way to track and communicate with parents?
#pln365 I talk a lot about SEL especially with my GT students who struggle with pressure, anxiety and OCD- we discuss strategies to help them cope in their challenging classes
A4: When I’ve seen leaders implement SEL, it’s been through planning work with teacher leaders, then PL for all Ts, then sharing the vision with Ss and Parents—and carrying it out consistently over the school year. #pln365
Thank you @EMercedLearning for inviting to this #JoyfulPD chat about a topic dear to my heart: #SEL matters! #PLN365 I enjoyed learning & growing from everyone!
Thank you all so much for making my first chat a success! Thank you @PaulONeill1972 for the opportunity to share my passions. Keep the conversation going on #PLN365 and with me over on #ditchtheclips
I think so! Which would you learn more from? an A-, a 78, or a narrative description of can do's/progress/actions? @BrysonBridget is from England and NEVER got letter grades; she's doing pretty well nowadays #pln365
A4. Every opportunity we get. If you raise up ppl who are good at math, reading, writing, and communicating, but don’t know how to empathize, show compassion and love...you run the risk of building up very capable, selfish ppl who live for themselves. #pln365
A4: If you work to build relationships with the whole family, the parents will trust you and understand when you explain the importance of social-emotional learning with them. I tell my parents that it's a life skill. #PLN365
We hold Parent University groups monthly WITH DINNER to show the importance of what we do and how we can share what we do with parents to use at home. #pln365
A4: we host workshops for our ESL families and talk about ways to support our students beyond academic and linguistic needs!
They need emotional support at home today more than ever!
#pln365
That is amazing! As brain science teaches us more about how our Ss learn (and how their emotions are tied into it!) we need to continue our growth. #PLN365
Actions speak louder than words...show the parents that social emotional learning is important by providing options for growth both in Home & at school. Do you only email about academics? Do you praise for SEL or are all your posts about academics? #pln365
I model and have demonstrated how to breathe through emotions so that they can learn to self regulate. This is how I live in my classroom each day. #PLN365
For our peeps that are going to be in NJ on April 14, would LOVE to have this as a session for @SpEdcampNJ ! Bring your colleagues and share your learning! #pln365
A4. Very horrible ppl and great ppl can share similar traits like cognitive intelligence, ability to persuade others, creative, risk-takers, but what makes them different is love, empathy, compassion and a heart to serve others. #pln365
conferencing with students throughout the quarter? maybe everybody signs up for time during a week/2 week period? when the T is not front-and-center lots of time gets freed up for this action step that can be so personal, and so powerful #pln365
A4 Focus on the positives each child has with their families. ClassDojo and SeeSaw are great tools to share SEL with families and to provide tips on building SEL at home #PLN365
Its a good story @mlarson_nj - life changing stuff. @D4Griffin3 thanks again for the safe space today. Needed to vent my frustrations about falling short today and my plan to rebound. Appreciated! 💪#pln365

Absolutely! And oftentimes parents don't know how to assist with those skills because they weren't taught them either. Helping the whole family helps the whole child! #PLN365
The relationships u build in your classroom will dictate the sense of community, when Ts value students as people isten to them really know them then the social emotional interactions become real and certainly not something 2 be graded live it don’t play a grading game #pln365
Thanks so much #pln365 ! Thanks @EMercedLearning for faciliating such great convo. Going to hop over to @worldgeochat for a chat on #pbl, if anyone is interested!
Paul, a session on that would be awesome! @SpEdcampNJ It's certainly something most of us feel we could use a refresher/reminder to fit into our work. #pln365

Yes! GRIT focuses on perseverance which in essence is self discipline. As Dr. Jane Nelsen suggests- the whole goal of discipline (or classroom management as I use it) is SELF-DISCIPLINE. It takes self awareness, planning, impulse control and more to have GRIT #PLN365
Thank you all so much for making my first chat a success! Thank you @PaulONeill1972 for the opportunity to share my passions. Keep the conversation going on #PLN365 and with me over on #ditchtheclips
Great chat, tonight. Something I will certainly bring into class tomorrow. Stay safe with these storms arriving in the next few days. (NJ is due for another storm this weekend... yikes! #pln365
Yes! Viewing SEL as a skill to be taught versus something to be punished is so important to me and I've teamed with Ts who view it differently. Makes it tough for the Ss. #PLN365
I love that you mention that grading can change things. Do you think that having SEL skills ungraded sends the message that they aren't as important and therefore not receiving the same time, training, etc? #PLN365
YES! Many adults see SEL as an add-on. I see it (as do many educators) as something that must be at least partly in place BEFORE real learning can happen. Maslow before Blooms! #PLN365
