Hello. Ready to start chatting...
Hi everyone! I'm Sarah, a secondary English teacher in East Lancs.
Interested to see what topics crop up in this evenings
Nicole from SouthEast England
I really like spaced revision as it combines exam techniques with revising content
I'm a big fan of Tweet cards - a tweet-sized fact on one side, full explanation on the other.
Spaced revision? Can you explain further please?
A1 Podcasts, containing key facts and content
A1 At the level of an individual lesson: using check quesions and resonding adequately as a teacher.
. Do you have an example &/or are they easy to create?
Nice one! I've use mini sagas for creative writing - not thought about them for revision!
. thanks for your multiple spam tweets to
Please use your cognition and stop.
Can I find one for you after the chat? My timeline is blowing up :-)
Online webinars - after school, holidays, weekends
A great way to get students cutting the content down to the basics
I play maths exam relay where groups compete to be the first to full marks, but each player only allowed a question at a time
Taking another perspective to stuff is also an approach I like to use, esp. for language lessons (EFL etc.) , , A1
It does, I introduce it at the start of the year as part of my intro to the course.
Do you do these yourself or are they an open thing?
Peer sessions where students present their own mini topics as part of the subject. Maybe make them into mini video clips?
Memory techniques - tell silly stories that link keywords
Taking another perspective? In what way?
A1 - Causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis comic strip https://t.co/BsMKULoB52 Comic strips for revision are great too
We offer online webinars for teachers after 3.30pm but the uptake isn't great - what would be your preferred time?
A1 - A plenary that makes your lesson look like the [back] side of a bus https://t.co/9891CYia5L Great for KS3 revision
Task students to make Top Trump style facts cards throughout the year and give points according to exam weighting.
Learn thru play
A1 , [1/3] Take a lesson about English , topic: tenses.
Normal lesson setting: tenses are presented on a timeline ...
Both! I've hosted them myself and if you're lucky enough, you can find others who are willing too
A time not during perhaps? :-/
A1 , [2/3] Take a lesson about English , topic: tenses.
Pupils who do not really understand can get a revision session ...
A1 , [3/3] In that session, the alternative view is presented: tenses are not shown on a timeline, but in time spheres: Pr, pa, fu
A2 - Copying out the textbook! No application or analysis.
Totally agree. It's like 'research and make a ppt' - where Ss copy/paste and nothing is done with it.
HUGE level of spam and self-promotion tonight.
Tip for spammers - people are irritated by your tactics.
This isn't good.
Rereading notes and the textbook. NO exam technique and notes might not be detailed enough
Spelkchecker? Can it be turned off in Google Apps for Education?
Telling students what they need to remember - no processing.
A2: re-reading your notes repeatedly doesn't work. Much better to condense/make a comic or other creative output
Make a post-it wall. Students write a topic and facts and then arrange them on the wall or window.
Take pics of wall.
a2:I'm not a 2ndry teacher but I always felt revision was a personal thing- each with the own strategy
Exactly. Transforming the info into something else means having to process it first.
I like that one! I do love a good post-it task.
A2 Just repeating what you have said is, in my opinion, not really a case of revision (practice has shown!). Alternative = better!
A3: separate out learning and revision. Incorporate revision techniques thro' all years in mini plenaries etc
A2 - Revision must be an active process that engages students with the material to be revised
A3 - by demonstrating a variety of things to try. The same method doesn't work for everyone
Different experiences and activities... students can reflect on what has worked - will be diff for diff students
https://t.co/7mgyR23Mis
I agree, I think T's need to show & demo various strategies that Ss then choose what is best for them
A2 - Active revision strategies booklet https://t.co/FKGDzErB2t A few active revision ideas in this booklet to share
At my school we've been doing a lot of work with students on marginal gains. Important for them to understand.
Create an environment that allows children to unleash their imagination & engage in make-believe play! https://t.co/JMmC82Zqxq
then use the Post-it Plus app to enable sharing with whole class!
If your iPads haven't been nicked, that is!
each child choose a Post-it in turn to ask a question of the class as part of revision
A3 - Modelling how to make effective revision resources then encouraging them to make them to bring in and share
Nice. Never heard of it (predictably enough!)
😬
A4: I think so as a maths and eng teacher... some work for maths but not for Eng and v.v.
A4 I can imagine that the "alternatives' approach" will not be suitable for non-language subjects ... I have experience w/ [1/2]
Wow. Good idea. We all love stationery done we!
Oh wow - you'll love it (and it's free!!)
A4 ... English, Dutch & German as foreign languages & I have used this approach in all of these lessons (successfully)
[2/2]
A4: Eng can do a lot of post-it and rearranging to answer diff questions on the exam. Maths - not so much
Yes, definitely - some teachers don't seem to explicitly teach how to revise, it seems.
I love and hate Post-its in equal measure.
Absolutely - some work across the board, others very subject-specific.
often students don't know how to use a strategy but this comes from clear demonstration from the teacher
It's the main issue I have with "learn to revise" days - not always subject specific - need to drill down
I created a SOL for yr11 on revision strategies, but I think that it needs to start earlier then exam yrs
What about strategies for boys? Games, timed activities, scaffolded tasks, different levels of challenge
A4 - Absolutely - revision must be personalised to suit different students, subjects, ages and situations.
Agreed - we should be constantly revising to keep fresh Little and often!
I agree, I try to incorporate the strategies in my lessons with flipped learning as well.
to be clear, I am not, nor ever have been associated with Post-Its. 😂😬
Although if strategies explicitly taught on those days, teachers can reinforce in lessons & demonstrate for them.
Do you think revision strategies need to be gender-based?
Yep - for sure. I quite like the learning to revise being in house and start early!!! I.e. Y7!!!
aaaaand back to revision.
A4 - I generally find that KS5 love to get up and move around as much as KS3 students
Do you feel your Governing Body impacts on your daily school life / teaching, Good or Bad? If so, how?
Yes - revision must be part of every year groups learning. Why start in Y11? What about Y7? https://t.co/NZrehZ070O
I created a SOL for yr11 on revision strategies, but I think that it needs to start earlier then exam yrs
finding time to get students to try a range of different methods let them get a feel for many methods
I think there could be greater emphasis on study skills in KS3 through PBL crosscurric
Revision should be a regular and natural part of a lesson
Actually this reminds me of revision. Any excuse to do something else.
Sort socks.
Walk dog.
Clean room
Eat.
Definitely - a reason why we start as early as possible... https://t.co/1XLmO46UfJ
finding time to get students to try a range of different methods let them get a feel for many methods
A4 When I was at university, I had this lecturer who started every lecture with "Let me have a short recap", and it worked!
With you 100% on that one https://t.co/IFsVZwaLpP
I think there could be greater emphasis on study skills in KS3 through PBL crosscurric
I have done some amazing cleaning when I'm supposed to be studying!
That's excellent. And sneaky! Accidental Revision. https://t.co/vzEcZiHajP
A4 When I was at university, I had this lecturer who started every lecture with "Let me have a short recap", and it worked!
Are there too many options / platforms for revision, such that most don't find the right one until it's too late?
A4, esp. because he used the so-called contrastive approach: some sentences for translation for a grammar lesson!
I think variation is the key. Note taking and past papers isn't for all!
A5: as someone said earlier - part of every revision. I start with a recap of prior topics. And set HWs for revision too
should be an on going process from the beginning of the year
According to our research, using tech in education in general has proven to be more of an aid to attainment than a distraction.
Always. And learned LPs from one end to the other.
Probably why I got E and U at A level. 😬
https://t.co/qTPIAGc6ps
I have done some amazing cleaning when I'm supposed to be studying!
every lesson - not every revision!!!
A5 - An important element of a revision programme is time management - we must teach student this with ideas like the pomodoro
We have an 'Invigilator Handbook' template available on our website to help you train your invigilators https://t.co/giF87zDtEp
Simple technique and no doubt effective 👍 https://t.co/SgKGE4m8FN
A4 When I was at university, I had this lecturer who started every lecture with "Let me have a short recap", and it worked!
. A colleague is an expert & blogs on Google Apps for Ed - I'll get him to check in the morning and reply 😊
: differentiation is key when it comes to A5: those who need it v those who don't, see for more about the topic!
Not that much of they've been consolidating all year. Say no to cramming!!
Variety is the spice of revision! Circuit training style in class so Ss experience different methods.
Love the phrase circuit training! Sums it up! https://t.co/etpQzXJd5n
Variety is the spice of revision! Circuit training style in class so Ss experience different methods.
Definitely. Super important with terminal exams after 2 years as well.
Top idea! Have you got an example?
Assumption 1: Key knowledge/skills/understanding and values can actually be identified and imparted via mass education systems
. is the research available to view?
Definitely. Play & playfulness need to be encouraged into adulthood too... https://t.co/QBMwsHmgxM
Feel that primary children needs time to grow through play. Feel sure this best homework any parent could help with. https://t.co/2RNhxO9BoF
Assumption 2: Key developmental stages in the client population can be identified and matched to the prescribed curriculum base
I like the sound of Circuit training style revision - Do you do this yourself? https://t.co/FTAW4IHZTb
Variety is the spice of revision! Circuit training style in class so Ss experience different methods.
Yes, yes, yes! These last minute interventions in Y11.... nope.
Assumption 3: Homogeneity of experience within the curriculum is possible, desirable and essential
Our recent work with suggests digital classrooms have contributed to a significant improvement in academic results.
100 ideas for Revision by has fantastic activity ideas in which could be use in circuit training
A6: yay... for a variety and change of activity
Kayaking can improve coordination & water safety! Pupils can learn so many skills on a residential trip! https://t.co/N09qocguoz
Assumption 4: Homogeneity of learner response within the curriculum is possible, desirable and essential
Any specific tech that you use for revision?
A6: nay if it's hours of mymaths or an app and nothing else
A6: let balance be the keyword! Yes, to some extent, no to some extent as far as IT is concerned for in .
Thank you for that! Will check out later - just opened it to bookmark!
A6 - yay!!! With a cherry on top! Students spend all day on their phones, let's embrace it!
I love tech, but when it comes to revision I seem to lean towards analogue methods.
We use the same-old apps (Pixl etc) but going to develop the online post-its for helping each other
Does them being on phones all day necessarily lead to effective revision though?
I don't doubt it but is there anything to back up the claim?
Using for numeracy revision from Y6 after Easter
You can use apps like Popplet to make spider diagrams and Phoetic to make word clouds. Ideal for revision!
Socrative quizzes (and similar) are great
there are some great apps out for knowledge learning, but I prefer analogue for exam technique
Q6: it is not a goal in itself, IT can be a medium to reach certain objectives concerning remediation, differentation & revision.
No! It's down to the teacher to hook them. With technology you're already on the road to doing that
I'm with you on that! Can't use tech in exams, after all!
Google classroom for note making checked by me, Socrative for checking learning (afl)
I prefer scribbled notes on paper. We each differ in preferred revision technique
A6 - too many missed opportunities if you don't
You can have all the tech in the world but the inspirational teacher at the front of the class is the key to it all
although practice essays are tech free and in timed conditions. Time to practice skills important
agreed IT is a tool for reaching outcomes including supporting creativity, etc
A6 - tech should have a place in a revision toolkit. Some great stuff out there to augment and develop revision skills
Nothing as memorable as an earworm
agreed, also think self/peer marking is useful as well after timed assess. Focusing less on grades & more on skills
https://t.co/XhrZSip8KG
revision songs are great . Get pupils to write a revision song to the theme of a popular catchy song. They ❤️ it
In a chat session of , there are only 6 questions.
This is an additional feature, which I like! https://t.co/wyRmW7EoyT
We recorded it on phones - and changed the voices... was so much fun - and effective!
Why the flying monkeys would you retweet EVERY SINGLE TWEET in the timeline?? <unfollows> <blocks> <subtweets>
https://t.co/ly9I1OBAta
either that or get Ss to tell you their approach & set these up for groups to complete & move on.
Honestly, my top resources for are & , because these offer excellent materials for
We can all remember those 'rainbow' & 'times table' songs...
A8: yes... but a continuum of revision leading to mastery makes a difference to learning
, and of course the BBC has two interesting accounts for EFL, as well: and , naturally!
Yes. Sustained recapping of material and skills. Not to be confused with lots of revision sessions https://t.co/xWDNQhthLq
https://t.co/PHtn3WW5Pe
not a pre made circuit but iPad w/ > game vs partner > answering Q using mark scheme > whatever works!
A8: revision should never be the focus... I'm anti last minute intervention... learning is... revision is part of learning
I'm starting on LinkedIn.. if people want to connect via LinkedIn please do! Maryse Dare
Thank you for all the ideas tonight - have loads opened to bookmark!!!
A8 - The opportunity to master a skill or subject does, perseverance, resilience and practice!
