#TeacherFriends I'm an author/illustrator of picture books, based on earlier original songs that I've written & recorded. I enjoy making school visits & speaking at conferences.
#TeacherFriends Hello! Welcome to the our little corner of the world! We love our chat, and are delighted to have @mariadismondy as our guest tonight!
I am https://t.co/UErgqByF46, a 31 year veteran teacher, musician, bulldog lover and Nannie Maggie to 6 little boys!
That is the principal introducing me and all of the artwork on the stage is in response to my picture book illustrations. INCREDIBLE reception in TN! #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Q1 How do you encourage kindness in the classroom? Please share projects, links, blog articles and any insight you have into spreading kindness.
#TeacherFriends A1: I love this topic tonight, because I have the perfect model of kindness daily in my own classroom. My students beg to be our sp needs student's partner each day. They are so caring, compassionate and diligent in making sure he is included.
I once spent an entire evening with Denise Fleming -- in her hotel room and we stayed up past our bedtime. She is hilarious, kind and sooooo supportive! #TeacherFriends
A1: In my class, we have Lola the Loving Llama! My kids fill out cards talking about the Llamatastic things their friends have done for them! They hang a heart on Lola! #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A1: We are using our Mrs. Snowlady Hallmark animation to sing when we feel an act of kindness deserves a song! It helps up gain @classdojo points too!
One of my kids was telling me about how she has nice mice, and I thought that was a great idea. My brain is trying to figure out a way to use this in the classroom #TeacherFriends
A1 We have a Kindness Jar. Throughout the week kids write kind acts they have seen and put them in the jar. Every Friday I pull out a few and read them. #teacherfriends
Faige sub teacher in Los Angeles. Great topic Teaching to the heart so the brain learns what’s important. Throughout the year, theouhgh the day #bekind#TeacherFriends

#TeacherFriends Q2 I am jumping in a bit late but I always use this mentor text for helping students notice we all feel angry & we all calm down... great for small moment writing too!
#TeacherFriends I collect the Hallmark singing snowmen each year. I bring them to my classroom to "sing" as our cheer for kindness.

#TeacherFriends I do have a vested interest in my title, "You're Wonderful" where words of affirmation are sung.
I have had some amazing feedback on how the lyrics empower Ss/classrooms.

So many these two come to mind. Follow up service learning and community service outreach: food for hungry, clothes drive, book drive, visiting Blind Children’s Center, Watt’s Senior Citizen Center to name a few that school is involved with
#TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Q3 Tell us an activity you do in the classroom to promote community? How do you connect your students to the needs of your own community -- or larger issues in the world at large?
A3: We have a morning meeting every day. The kids greet each other and we have a sharing session. We are also A firm Growth Mindset classroom where we encourage each other with the Power of Yet! #teacherfriends
Kindness tree! Since it is the holiday time, my kids put a ball on the tree each time a friend is kind to them! #teacherfriends Not my idea saw it on pinterest
#TeacherFriends This last weekend, I got to participate in a BucketListOpportunity and joined a group from our church and painted the exterior of a home for Habitat for Humanity.
Such a great feeling to do something sooooo concrete!
I do weekly compliments during morning meeting, message, and during crafts. I also try to catch them doing random acts of kindness! - Tweeting from the hot tub at #SLATEinWi#teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3:We choose two students per day who demonstrated kindness (a different two students daily until all have been honored). It takes little time, and reaps big rewards.
#TeacherFriends A3: @OpenCircleOrg is an incredible social emotional curriculum I was lucky enough to be trained in at @Wellesley...I see such a difference in how students treat each other after each lesson!
A3: The learning circle-(lit by faux candles), where each Monday we share our weekend experiences by passing the NA talking feather and open our minds for new learning. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A3 I also read the #BucketFiller book and have a “bucket filler of the week” award...winner earns a certificate, we sing them a song & their picture is put outside our classroom!
By using the owrds our room and our classroom, connects them and makes it more meaningful to them. They respect things more and strive to create a better environment! #teacherfriends
We just sent 14 Operation Christmas Child boxes to needy families around the world. I'm also thinking about a Kindness project at school for staff from the kids. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q3 Tell us an activity you do in the classroom to promote community? How do you connect your students to the needs of your own community -- or larger issues in the world at large?
#TeacherFriends A3: Last week our writing focused on what we can "give" to others. This week we are addressing our own wants, or what we can get (Christmas wish lists, etc.)
#TeacherFriends Q4 What is something YOU DO to model appreciation in your school? What is your role in modeling appreciation? How do you hold yourself accountable?
We also have a food drive and through a community service program some of the children visit the Blind Children’s Center. Powerful reflections which they share with whole school #teacherfriends
A4: I have a huge role in modeling appreciation! It is important for my kids to see me do what I expect of them. many of them do not see this at home and my classroom is the only place they are exposed to this!#teacherfriends
A4: I always leave my kids notes telling them how much I appreciate the things they do everyday! I say thank you and I treat them with respect! I think it is important for them to hear me tell them thank you and for me showing them that what they do is important! #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends it is so exciting when we can inspire each other to concrete actions -- on behalf of others. So many opportunities at this time of year!
#TeacherFriends I think it is such a self-esteem builder to make it possible for a less fortunate child to "give" something, whether a gift, an act of kindness to someone, etc. They need to know everyone has something to contribute.
Q4 A portion of proceeds from sale of my book Jelly Donut Difference is going to non-profit that serves families in our area. We don't have the total yet but it is five, possibly six digits! #teacherfriends
A4 Model Kindness through authentic/organic interactions. Subbed last week & I tried to do a weaving activity, I struggled & a little kinder talked me through it so patiently. Others saw & I thanked her for all her encouragement. These situations arise daily #teacherfriends

#TeacherFriends A4: I also have a marble jar & when students make a good whole group choice they earn a marble...once they fill the jar I thank them & reward them w/ a whole class experience (i.e. PJ day!)
A4: My colleague writes a handwritten “Thank you for being my student” note to each student & mails it to their home every time report cards come around...❤️ #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Q5 How do you encourage families to teach character in the home? How do you connect parents to the classroom in terms of 'character building' efforts?
SUCH an incredible idea... I could totally use this with a student who has been pretty tough on himself lately... PS what does “Ss” stand for? #newbieproblems#TeacherFriends
My parents are connected through @classdojo@weebly site and through @Seesaw . This allows them to see pictures and for me to send them tips and ideas as well as share character building moments!! #teacherfriends

Sometimes we need those moments to reflect on why we love teaching so much...especially during the super busy bee parts of the school year! #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Don't forget @Seesaw for documenting RAK with your class. It is such a great way to record a timeline of kindness for students and parents.
