-
Yo Joel! Happy October! How are you!?

Me too. Been busy but good.
-

-
Awesome, so far! How are things?
-
Hi Erin!! WOohoo!! We must be pretty special to pull you away from a tv show!! How's things?
-
Hi, Maura, great to see you!!!
-
A1: Of course S choice is important - it helps ensure better engagement & participation!
-
I think that's the theme this year -- 'busy but good'!
-
A1: My school is a -our school culture promotes Ss choice, voice, participation, responsibility https://t.co/jD31DPNmwb
-
Welcome to the world famous Ms. Gray. How's everything?
-
Hey, Melissa. Life's good. What's new in Stamford?
-
Student choice is vital. When students chose what they can read/write about, they take more ownership in their work
-
. Wow, that is a crazy wave, Melissa! Thanks! ((WAVING BACK))
-
A1: Choice is imperative bc it allows students to be valuable stalk-holders in class. It builds trusting relationships as well.
-
A1: Student choice is pivotal to a student's interest and passion for learning.
-
Tim, 4th & 5th grade T in Maine. S choice / are of great importance in classrooms. Engagement, empowerment, learn to learn.
-
great! Loving this year. How about yourself?
-
A1. Student choice can build relevance and when we build relevance we can increase rigor.
-
A1: Student choice is SUPER important in my classroom - it increases their engagement, desire to learn, dedication
-
A1 Choice is a critical aspect of student engagement along with, access, time, collaboration, etc.
-
great! How's the new position?
-
Yes! Nice, point, Dan https://t.co/I9gfxr4xjy
-
-
A1: Of course S choice is important - it helps ensure better engagement & participation!
-
Choice breeds engagement and allows students to feel a deeper investment in the learning process.
-
Hello friends! Chris, elementary principal from Greenwich. We were thrilled to complete a two day Global in Sept!
-
Umm...I can't think of anything new besides the color of my nail polish - lol
-
A1: Yes! Just like adult choice, it allows for students to feel part of process and allows them to have some control over learning
-
Hi, Erin! Thanks for joining us tonight!
-
oh my it's so so so good. The first 3 episodes are slow but after that... it's INSANE!
-
Going well. Thanks. Busy but amazing.
-
-
Totally agree!! I can't imagine not letting students choose what they read write....
-
A1 Providing choice also provides differentiated opportunities for Ss allowing for multiple pathways to success.
-
So important in writing. Creates authenticity. https://t.co/cWoaPOIMKQ
-
-
Student choice is vital. When students chose what they can read/write about, they take more ownership in their work
-
A1: Choice allows Ss to demonstrate understanding in ways that fits their needs. As long as objective is met, shouldn't matter how.
-
A1: S choice is well-supported by S voice, important for T to value
-
That sounds amazing. Tell us more. Welcome Chris.
-
Totally agree Joel! Their investment means they get so much more out of the process! It's amazing!
-
Hey there, Chris! Happy to have yo here tonight
-
When students have choice in their reading, it automatically changes their perception of the story.
-
Hey Chris! So cool!! How'd that go?
-
A1: I love witnessing the spark in a S's eye when they are allowed to follow their own path.
-
What about control and compliance?
-
This right here https://t.co/A49qRKpUeS
-
-
A1: Choice is imperative bc it allows students to be valuable stalk-holders in class. It builds trusting relationships as well.
-
Q2: Is your school or district encouraging Ts to increase Ss choice and voice? How?
-
and heightens their appreciation for reading in general https://t.co/tdDPx3c4aO
-
-
When students have choice in their reading, it automatically changes their perception of the story.
-
ha! Compliance is the lowest form of engagement. I guess I should revert back to the stone age.
-
-
-
I agree. Can you imagine not being able to chose what we read as adults?
-
I think that is the biggest piece that many have difficulty with...ppl still think it should all be the same.
-
A1: Student choice is key. I notice that is has to be gradually encouraged because it can be overwhelming for Ss that never had it!
-
Visit a makerspace where Ss can dive into anything that is interesting to them or class using 20% time.
-
Excellent point. When we give Ss relevant work, it gains the teacher credibility and trust.
-
It's good! Every day is a new adventure...I'm learning a lot this year and I love it
-
I hear the test is the same, so everything must be the same in class. My response, "I don't teach to tests. Ever."
-
A2: As an instructional coach, I bring this to Ts. Last year we started Genius Hour in a couple grades, which was a huge 1st step!
-
A2 Started with S choice w/ literature, moving onto Deep Dives and Genius Hour projects. S ownership of learning!
-
that's a GREAT point, Sean. Sometimes choice is VERY overwhelming for some.
-
A2: Several Ts in m school are also adept at using Socratic Seminar
-
YES! I'm having to go super slow with choice seating this year -- too overwhelming for some
-
A2: Yes! It is part of our student goals for the year, to increase student voice and choice in the classroom. Awesome ideas fromstaff
-
Nope. That would drive me nuts.
-
100% Ss are used to not having it. Not sure how to handle at first. Gradual release model.
-
DITTO! Last time I checked life wasn't a multiple choice test or an essay...so why would I teach everyday for that?!
-
Not much to add, but I'm here!
-
A2 Making S learning transparent by encouraging S generated blog posts & tweets broadcasts S opinions & thoughts. Engages & connects.
-
Welcome to the conversation Leon. Hope all is well.
-
Isn't that college though?
-
but at least in college we have a choice as to what we want to study 😊
-
-
-
A2: "Personal learning" is a goal for our school/district, but not sure we're there yet.
-
A2: I'm having a hard time answering this...
-
Voice takes on many meanings. Giving Ss ownership of the questions, the discussions, & the demonstration of learning.
-
-
Wow...that's a cool idea! What does personal learning mean?
-
I find that hard to believe, Leon. You always have vital insight.
-
True....I just didn't do a very good job at picking my classes until my grad classes...lol
-
Love your point about demonstration of learning. I love finding new ways other than slideshows! https://t.co/dNJEKY7FaX
-
-
Voice takes on many meanings. Giving Ss ownership of the questions, the discussions, & the demonstration of learning.
-
I love this beyond words!
-
Hi there, Leon, glad you could make it!
-
I saw this on Instagram/Twitter -- sounds SO cool!!
-
Thanks for joining Your voice will add to the discussion
-
Q3: Are you giving your students more choice & voice in the classroom? How?
-
It was so much fun. We hosted them for teachers and librarians too!
-
A3: Ss have choice in class design, where we put things, seating, what they read, where they read/learn, sit...what they write...
-
Have you had success with QFT in our subjects like math
-
A3: Allowing Ss to demonstrate understanding in variety of ways. Empowering them through feedback and surveys. and simply, listening.
-
A3: Students select their topics for the digital media PSA's and documentaries
-
Student voice is always the biggest challenge for teachers. We are used to talking. Step back, allow Ss to process & drive the disc.
-
A3: As mentioned, by implementing Genius Hour and Socratic Seminar, but also PBL and other hands-on assignments
-
Hardest part is for us to shut up!!!!!!!!!!!
-
A3: In TAB art rm, Ts teach short mini-lessons, Ss decide what they will create. Ss take ownership of set-up/clean up too Ss like it!
-
A2. Providing choice can happen in all different ways. Remember- we all learn differently and how can we build ownership in Ss?
-
A3: Have choice can allow Ss to share their awesome and help other kids utilize high and low tech ways to create.
-
Little things like choice seating demonstrate trust in our learners. Builds good emotional currency.
-
I had one of my kids time me the other day -- I was only allowed 10 minutes to talk! They LOVEd it!
-
-
This year, we have also given T their own genius hour called "Teacher Time" once a month after school
-
A3 Flexible seating choices. Also creating a "menu" of choices to respond to a text. Thanks to idea...
-
Wait...we should just listen to the kids? No way.....
-
A3: I always use choice w/ flexible seating. Ss use couch, standing desk, counter, regular desk, floor, pillows, exercise balls.
-
Hey Rob good to hear from you! How is it going?
-
Honestly have never taught math, Sean. But I saw examples this summer of in all subjects.
-
Thanks for the RT! What an honor!
-
A2 Sorry so late! Our district stressing student-centered learning this year; recently had PD for Ts to discuss techniques we use
-
That works, but much guidance is necessary because students will easily drive conversations away from relevancy
-
Yes. I love this! If we want Ts to think differently, schools have to as well.
-
I wish I had more room for this, Jimmy! Although some might not work in art rm...
-
As a classroom T I was never afraid to have Ss evaluate me at start, middle and end of year. I loved the feedback and reflection.
-
Biggest piece is listen. As Ts, we don't have to always fill the silence. Give Ss time to think.
-
Would love to hear more about this!
-
that's great you're using that. Great way for choice and to incorporate focused dialogue and conversation in class.
-
Q4: Share 1 school/classroom task that you currently do that can be done by Ss.
-
What would that menu look like? Would love to see!
-
-
Wow...now that is a COOL idea!!
-
No, Ts are still in charge, Ss empowered w more choice/voice
-
-
What do you mean by a menu of response choice? Question types?
-
Thx for participating Dolors!
-
Question Formulation Technique. Read Make Just One Change by &
-
all aligned to the mentor text we read. We then used blogs to connect and share.
-
Better late than never! :)
-
DEEP GAME CHANGER. I don't say that lightly at all.
-
Teacher Time- can you tell us more about it? Sounds like a fantastic PL model.
-
-
A4: I go in to 4th grade classes and teach them how to do ken kens. They are fun and self-motivating. We began Genius Hour last year
-
?'s, essays, visuals, connections, etc. using Crenshaw and blogs to connect and share.
-
-
Once per month we are given time to explore pet projects instead of sitting in a meeting
-
Agreed. Practice facilitating discussions, driving them. I make a point to make sure Ss talk to each other, not teacher.
-
A4: Definitely miss being in the classroom once back in there!
-
A4: Ss teaching Ss in my reading class...word fluency, sentence fluency, passage fluency. One S reads, the other instructs! Power!
-
-
Very cool! Excited to try blog this year! Already have S work uploaded - woohoo!
-
-
A4 Frequent feedback can def be done regularly by peers instead of T; same for self-assessment and st goal-setting
-
A4. We are starting student safety patrol - managing the hallways, door, buses. Building 5th grade leadership.
-
it's great B/C you can also teach constructive feedback, , connect parents to responses.
-
Especially in an inquiry-based social studies classroom now, Jimmy.
-
-
Are they ed topics? Do Ts work alone? In groups? Both? Love this idea.
-
A4: After a few years, I realized I spent way too much time grading S writing, so I had them self-assess/peer edit more
-
you know it. Using it to kickoff next unit in a few weeks.
-
That is probably the most amazing idea...even though it is SO simple! Do you need to show a result?
-
My Ss are doing as a video documentary assignment to get them involved in the issues of the election
-
I just read it yesterday. I think I'm still confused
-
-
A4: Ss are in charge of putting away/taking out unfinished work each week. Also will ask 3rd gr Ts 4 Ss to put stools down each am.
-
Yes, ed topics. Most works in groups, but can be independent.
-
. Thanks is for all the likes of our work, Brian! Which school are you working at?
-
I would love that, but not asked for by principal yet
-
Students need to feel ownership in the school setting. Empower their voices and provide choice in the process.
-
So relevant, ! https://t.co/Zkk1fzEge1
-
-
My Ss are doing as a video documentary assignment to get them involved in the issues of the election
-
Ss are being trained to be leaders in our school. Help at drop off and pick up. Huge responsibility but building ownership.
-
Great point and this multiplies the feedback that is possible for students daily! https://t.co/FqkOu3poRM
-
-
A4 Frequent feedback can def be done regularly by peers instead of T; same for self-assessment and st goal-setting
-
Ss will move from to and lengthen their video to include footage 2 create a longer piece.
-
Let me know if I can be of any help, Erin. I've used often and presented on it. Happy to help.
-
-
thank you! I appreciate it.

This is why I luv story-driven PBL. Stories give Ss chance 2 engage & experience, PBL allows them 2 practice lessons in RL
-
Great to have back! Thanks for getting the year rolling.
-
-
-
Don't forget to follow new educators tonight! Your voice matters! (Ss too!)

No prob, Joel! Thx for being here!

Is that a sweet boxer I see sitting with you Maura?

A spark chat lasts for only 15 to 30 minutes. is a spark chat. Designed to get ideas going I guess :-)
