#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
Labs offer great learning experiences, but we have to make sure the kids know why and how it connects to the content. #cecheetahs took some time to reflect on our lab and how it connects by playing musical partners and shared their thinking! #scitlap#5thchat#ce5throckstarteam
Meredith joining from SW Florida. I moderate #BookCampPD which is all about helping educators with their professional learning about the books they are reading. I am SUPER excited to read your tweets during #5thchat as >you< are the expert in what works best for you!
My name is Kathryn Harrison, and I have been an elementary school teacher and a children's librarian assistant in Virginia. I am moving out of teaching children now and into Professional Development. I am so excited to learn from you all this evening! #5thchat
Today our #cecheetahs formed sedimentary rock and made compaction and cementation a bit more hands on. Afterwards we did a gallery walk explaining the formation of sedimentary rock. #scitlap#5thchat#ce5throckstarteam
A1: Reading Apprenticeship training. It was so relevant and the presenter was someone who was a master teacher so they had worked the strategy in their classroom and could provide practical experience. #5thchat
A1. Each Saturday morning when I learn with others during @LeadUpChat it is tremendously meaningful. In the previous decades it was many opportunities to learn from Richard Allington about literacy instruction. #5thchat
A1: My most meaningful training experiences have been ones where I was able to take something back to the classroom right away. I also get a lot out of training experiences where you aren't just sitting in one place the whole time. #5thchat
My most meaningful training opportunity was last school year when my district allowed the staff to sign up for PD sessions that interested them, as taught by other teachers in the school .. no more "one size fits all" PD that doesn't pertain to everyone #5thchat
A1 - My most meaningful trainings have been by experts in their field with lots of experience on the topic. My favorite was learning about "Understanding by Design" from @grantwiggins & @jaymctighe at an #ASCD conference. Nothing like learning from the best! #5thchat
A1
I was given the opportunity to start my career with an amazing grade-level that planned together. I was able to use sub days to observe the other classes and then have them observe me and we have each other feedback. I consider that “on the job training/PD”
#5thchat
Today my students & I launched our study of Earth systems & classification with a @MysterySci activity, “Why do leaves change color in the fall?” I love how engaging & fool-proof these lessons are! Thx Doug! #5thchat#edchat#NGSS#science
A1 - EdCamps are an amazing learning experience for teachers! I've helped to run a few in the Chicago area & even hosted one at one of our district schools! They are well-attended & have so many topics to choose between! I always come away with new ideas! #5thchat
A1 Most meaningful have been when I've had an opportunity to choose topics that I will use in my classroom. Choice is empowering, and not just for Ss. #5thchat
Do you have favorite one's that you try your best to attend? I see you have been "walking" Twitter hallways since 2011 - one heck of a long time. Have the chats that appeal most for your learning shifted over that time? #5thchat
He and I have worked on off together for over 20 years. He even taught my daughter in 5th grade. He has did not coach me but I attended a 40 hour training with him. #5thchat
A2 - Twitter (and the internet)! For me, that's been the best source of information on educational practice for the past 5 years. Blogs, websites and journals have also been helpful. #5thchat
A2: Whenever I have wanted to learn something that wasn't offered by my school district, I looked to my PLN! They were a wonderful resource of articles and book studies! #5thchat
I just love it when someone in my #PLN tweets out a question about some topic they want more information about. I have this passion for researching topics and trying to find several that will help that person. #5thchat
Do you know if they were able to use a grant to do that training? I am working with the VA history museum to create a training experience for teachers here. #5thchat

A1: With my limited experience in the field I have found that being able to collaborate with supervising practitioners in the classroom and taking on that leadership role while practicing classroom management skills was very beneficial to my acclimation in the field #5thchat

A3 #5thchat@edutopia always tweets such interesting and helpful articles and links! I love reading the things they tweet so I can stay current & get ideas for things I can do in my classroom when I become a teacher!
A3: There are a lot of great teachers on Twitter! I always learn something from @EMercedLearning! I also love to follow authors! @KateMessner is AMAZING! #5thchat
A3. First I am going to shamelessly plug the chat I moderate because it is all about learning with others and the #PLN in #BookCampPD is over the moon tremendous!! #5thchat
A3: Twitter chats that allow for the sharing of resources used directly in the classroom are some of the most personally engaging ones for me such as #edteach#2PencilChat and #ECET2. They’ve become great resources to me in my development as a future teacher #5thchat
A3 - Although I organize it, #LearnLAP is a constant source of great ideas for me & our classroom! It's every Monday night at 7pm Central. Hope you'll all join in next week as @amynicolebettis moderates "Reflecting with Rudolph! - Lots of insightful questions to chat on! #5thchat
Your statement about following great authors reminded me of the Twitter list I have of the guest authors who have joined the #BookCampPD chat. So I created graphics (below) to help others follow the tweets of AMAZING authors. #5thChat

A3: Still a newbie to Twitter chats...do love the #tlap community for its depth and breadth (not to mention the general sense of play incorporated into most chats) #5thchathttps://t.co/kKyozqblXy
Great question! I created a website to extend the learning of others from the books we discuss. https://t.co/bcIF6eE8r3 <-- Calendar of Events. The site also has TONS of resources about the professional books we have highlighted (check out all of the tabs). #5thChat
A4 - I wish they'd work with each teacher individually to make a plan that works for them, from goal-setting, to exploring new pedagogies, to book studies and beyond. What works for me, doesn't for my teammates. Needs to be differentiated & personalized! #5thchat
A4: In order to change practices, PD should occur over time & be ongoing. Research shows when PD describes a skill to teachers, only 10% usually transfer it into practice; however, when teachers are coached over time thru implementation, 95% typically transfer the skill #5thchat

A3: @ddmeyer and #iteachmath are where I get a lot of my math ideas from. Also just interesting to read other people's ideas and thoughts on teaching math. #5thchat
A4: I wish that they would attend the same trainings as the teachers! I never saw admin in trainings, and then when I did something in my classroom... they didn't know what they were looking at! #5thchat
A4: I wish administrators would reinforce the importance of self reflection and collaboration among our peers. Working together to overcome obstacles gives educators a wider range of perception #5thchat

Wise, wise words of wisdom!!
Wouldn't it be great if those who design professional learning opportunities kept this at the forefront of their thoughts? #5thChat

A4: Some PD is preplanned for part of the time and other times we are able to give feedback, suggestions, and are surveyed to see what we need/want next. #5thchat
A4: Since I support PD in my district, I can say my team has tried to focus on a culture of growth by narrowing our message, recognizing Ts as the professionals they are, and planning for our best Ts (i.e., Don’t water the rocks.) #5thchathttps://t.co/Q6zsOIkFKt
A4: I want them to know that choice is critical and that I want to learn from someone who is in the trenches. I want to see things in action not just "sit and get". #5thchat
Yesterday I wrote a short blog posting about the "ripple effect" that all of us on Twitter have in the professional learning of others. https://t.co/jHuEPAbiAH
We are SO fortunate to have each other!! #5thChat

I enjoy Twitter because of the fast pace, relevance, focus of a topic, and discussion with people from all different ideas and experiences.
I can follow up with comments/people that are interesting and relevant to my situation.
I want that personalization for my PD
#5thchat
One of the best books for ongoing, personalized PD that I've read is
"Leading Professional Learning: Tools to Connect and Empower Teachers" by Thomas C. Murray & Jeffrey J. Zoul: https://t.co/yqWaQleQA8 Check it out! #5thchat
A5: I have taken an online course through @massp@MASSP_PTL It was effective because you had an opportunity to learn and interact with other people. It wasn't just read and answer questions. You shared ideas with colleagues from all across the state. #5thchat
A5. I LOVED the 1st online course I took about 15 years ago. I was writing grants and needed to learn more about including families and communities in student learning. I became certified as a community education director. Wonderful experience. #5thchat
A5. I had accepted a positive in Nevada and needed additional coursework for certification. We loaded up the U-haul and I took online courses on our trip across the country and arrived with the certification I needed. Awfully glad it was available. #5thchat
A5: Taking 1 right now! Im currently getting my supervisors cert. but my fav class was this past summer. It was about teacher evals and observations & the way they are supposed to be done. I learned a lot about the Danielson obs model #5thchat
I loved it because since it was an online class, there were a lot of video clips watching teachers teach and applying the evaluation rubric to the lessons. I got to see a lot of good and bad teaching and decide how to evaluate it #5thchat
QUESTION 6: Have you ever led professional development before? Tell us about it: How did it go? What was successful/not successful? If not, what's holding you back? #5thchat
A5: quality short videos=good; infographic-good, too much reading-boring, activities, challenges, feelings of success & progress! Earning badges #5thchat
A6: I have led some really great workshops at the state level. I made sure that the participants were up and moving around and I got a lot of positive feedback afterward! #5thchat
A6: As a future educator I’m very excited to hear some of the experiences that you’ve had with leadership roles! Any advice anyone has is greatly appreciated #5thchat
A6 - I'm always crazy nervous before presenting, then completely fine once it starts. I prefer small groups so I can feel a connection to everyone in the group. I love showing examples from our classroom! I dislike wearing ties & collared shirts! :) #5thchat
A6: I've only lead an optional session based off of a Google conference I attended with a few other Ts, went well but could have used more time to share #5thchat
A6 Presented at @Emergenetics_ STEP conference, did a few mini-sessions at staff meetings, presented at @edinitiativeco . I got good feedback, so I guess it was successful! I just speak about what works for me, knowing that people pick up what works for them! #5thchat
A6: Yes! This is one of my favorite parts of my job as a curriculum facilitator. I enjoyed doing Confronting Controversy at #nceta18 for @TeachEnglishNC; felt like it empowered Ts by allowing them to participate in presented structures. #5thchathttps://t.co/PjOPzgMynu
QUESTION 6: Have you ever led professional development before? Tell us about it: How did it go? What was successful/not successful? If not, what's holding you back? #5thchat
A6: I just have to practice and review my content that I am presenting about. I think about the questions people may ask and what responses I might have. Try looking at it from all angles. #5thchat
One of the resources we have is each other.
I created this graphic with the directions that explain how, at the end of a chat, to follow others. Works great as we are often too busy during a chat to 'follow.' #5thchat
QUESTION 7: If you could lead a training session on any topic, what would you like to do differently than typical trainings? Why would you like to try that? #5thchat
A7. If I was to do it again I would follow the AMAZING lead that @conniehamilton and @mssackstein created when they present. They have educators moving and communicating with each other!! #5thchat
QUESTION 7: If you could lead a training session on any topic, what would you like to do differently than typical trainings? Why would you like to try that? #5thchat
A7. I often follow the hashtag of conferences that take place across the country. I notice many are in awe of keynote speakers and really connect with them. I do wonder what they take back to classrooms from these types of sessions that help increase student achievement. #5thchat
A7 - I'm looking forward to reading everyone's ideas! I've been to so many trainings & led many myself, but there always seems to be those who love the style & those who'd prefer it a different way! #CantPleaseEveryoneAllTheTime#5thchat
QUESTION 7: If you could lead a training session on any topic, what would you like to do differently than typical trainings? Why would you like to try that? #5thchat
QUESTION 8: Have you ever had an experience where you were able to get something good out of a training that wasn't really intended for your position or grade level? Tell us about it! #5thchat
A7: I am absolutely dying to get a setup for authentic teacher practice WITH Ss. Read about this amazing summer program that gave Ts PD in am, then they applied it with remedial Ss in PM. Just PD with Ss too- changes the tone completely. #5thchathttps://t.co/nlw8dY1jWN
QUESTION 7: If you could lead a training session on any topic, what would you like to do differently than typical trainings? Why would you like to try that? #5thchat
A8: I got signed up for a Java Coding course intended for HS and MS teachers when I was teaching K. I learned about the "Programmers Model" and it has been in my classroom ever since! #5thchat
Thanks to everyone who participated in tonight's #5thchat! Thanks especially to @kathrynrh for moderating a great chat!
Please join us next week (12/4 at 7pm Central) as @tikaee moderates: "Incorporating Writing Across the Curriculum." Should be awesome!
Have a great week!!! :)
A8: I attended a PD session geared towards elementary Ts on adding movement into their lessons and I've found ways to adapt it to social studies #5thchat#getthemoutoftheirseats
A8: I sat in on PD for early Ed and I found that a lot of the approaches to teaching and learning could very easily be adapted to upper level learners #5thchat
A8 - I think if you keep an open mind to most PD, you'll find a way to take something away. It can be hard when you're taken out of your classroom, or giving up your personal time, or paying a registration fee, or it's coming from the top down. PLUS it's one more thing! #5thchat
A8. This happens often on Twitter when you walk into a chat outside of your main interest area. You can learn so much from others you might not interact with around your grade or subject area. #5thChat
Thank you so much! Sharing ideas, especially as a newbie can be quite scary but baby steps definitely sounds like the way to build up confidence and a network of support! #5thchat
