#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Lisa - 7th grade geography at Hershey Middle. Currently in denial that next Thursday is Thanksgiving and that this Thursday we are supposed to get winter weather #worldgeochat
A1
GLOBALIZATION - how we're all connected through culture & trade. <-- This is what my 6th period came up with. I couldn't argue a better one!
#worldgeochat
A1: Globalization is how our world is shrinking and growing at the same time. We're closer than ever in terms of connections, but still have so much to understand #worldgeochat
A1 the general one we use in class is something like “the movement and spread of goods, people and ideas around the world and the growth of global interconnectedness in the process” but I’m pretty sure “interconnectedness” is not a real word #worldgeochat
That’s perfect! Sometimes it gets narrowed down to “look at this supply chain” but removing culture and politics and other forms of exchange really limits the scope. #worldgeochat
A1 Summary: Globalization is all about connections and how our world is interconnected. We look at economics, culture, politics and so much more #worldgeochat
A1: Globalization, to me, is a mentality. Champions of globalization say WE ARE THE COLLECTIVE, and we will do everything we can to help us all be the best we ALL can be. #humanity#worldgeochat#OneWorld
A1 There are a variety of ways globalization can be defined & it depends on ones perception. Some define it in terms of interconnectedness, others in terms of standardization, spatial, &/or multiple perspectives. #worldgeochat
A1: Globalization is how our world is shrinking and growing at the same time. We're closer than ever in terms of connections, but still have so much to understand #worldgeochat
Before - I gave them 3 minutes to Google. Each table gave me adefinition. We picked out keywords from each table's definition and then created a class definition from that. It was a long process, but I loved the result! #worldgeochat
A2: Hard to argue with this big picture video about rise in global health and wealth past 200 years ( especially if the world wars are just a momentary dip :) #worldgeochathttps://t.co/gr84wy6LNA
A1) Globalization is the interdependent relationship that develops between cultures and people sometimes resulting in progressivism and sometimes deterioration. #worldgeochat
A2) positive aspects include: progress, contributions, win-win trade agreements, spread of tech, & how the world is changing for the better through globalization #worldgeochat
A2: Tolerance and awareness. I teach my students WHY it's important to be globally minded. Learn world culture. Listen. You don't have to agree with everyone, just don't hate them because they're different than you. #worldgeochat
A2: Globalization helps people get what they need and want through trade. Many countries/businesses gain a profit. People get jobs from multinational corporations, which improves their standard of living and prices for goods are cheaper in general. #worldgeochat
A1B I cowrote a book chapter in a book @dankrutka co-edited around an iteration of this word ("global") & its multiple meanings. Here's the book it's in https://t.co/nf0gLHjvHY#worldgeochat
A2 Globalization has brought a whole new set of cultural values to places that not been exposed to them before. Education in rural Afghanistan is usually where I start. #worldgeochat
A2 globalization improves the economy... across the board... there’s no denying (statistically speaking), Although I’ve been reading “Fear: Inside the Trump White House” by Bob Woodward and it turns out there IS a lot of denial on that #worldgeochat
This is a standard resource in my class. It is the best way to get concrete thinking 9th graders to begin to see a more global perspective. #worldgeochat
A2 Facilitating ways for students to gain intercultural awareness skills, understanding multiple perspectives, being able to critically analyze, spatial skills. #worldgeochat
A3: Depending on how you look at it, migration/immigration, economics, (opinion) rise in intolerance vs. media's portrayal of intolerance #worldgeochat
A2 To a 12 year old kid, the idea that Jordan’s on their feet is the product of globalism makes it a positive aspect to them... until they learn about who makes them and their earnings/living conditions #worldgeochat
A2) Teaching the influences of globalization in pop culture is one of the best ways to teach tolerance. When we realize language is influenced culturally, makes us not seem so different from other places. #worldgeochat
Hi, off and on tonight but thought I'd learn a thing or two. ;)
A1) Globalization is the recognition that we're all interconnected and all in this together. Addressing climate change will determine whether future generations will live or die together. #WorldGeoChat
A2 Globalization, as well as the cold, doesn’t bother her anyway: Listen to ‘Let It Go’ in 25 languages in one earworm clip. It’s a fresh way of thinking about the concept. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/j3PKwCZMQw
A3 One of the worst parts of globalization is pollution. Unfortunately, since many of our cultural products are produced in Less Developed places, we don't see or feel the impact of the pollution generated by our need for global products. #worldgeochat
A3 I always talked about the impact on the auto industry because I taught previously in a town where lots of people were impacted by a GM plant moving away. Certain industries are forced to adapt and that is hard #worldgeochat
A3) some negatives could include examples of exploitation, imperialism, and the potential conflicts that can arise between societies and/or states #worldgeochat
A3: In terms of trade, some businesses can't compete and are forced to shut down, or move to places where labor is cheaper, which causes people to lose jobs. Working conditions in some countries are dangerous, there are low wages, and there can be child labor. #worldgeochat
A3 negative aspects include the digital divide, imperialism, settler colonialism, the rise of nationalism in part as a response to some groups' interpretation of globalization #worldgeochat
A3 World War I would be an extremely relevant negative to discuss here + there's no better time than now to chat about "America First" i.e. https://t.co/F32sKFaAWx#worldgeochat
A3 Negatives include: harm to the environment, companies spreading their power without being courteous of other countries' norms, not considerate to less-developed countries, spread the "corporate America mentality"... #worldgeochat
A3: Great question! A particular culture can feel overwhelmed or 'watered down' due to globalization. It's the way of the world, but be sure and remind Ss, globalization doesn't mean YOUR culture is any less important! Be an awesome, unique part of ALL OF IT. #worldgeochat
A2) In fact, today’s CNN10 episode covers Dubai’s technology convention as an update on today’s speedy technological developments. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/y1Xhdj9dJZ
A4: I absolutely love Dollar Street by @Gapminder. Also, Geography, Alive! does have a good chapter in the book about the process of shoemaking #worldgeochat
The link between globalization, imperialism, and nationalism was a topic in grad class this week. Thinking about it as an adult in today's culture was eye opening and inspiration for class discussions #worldgeochat
A4: Personal travel stories. Friends made in communist Vietnam. Amazing dinners with Muslims in Arabia. School children in poverty stricken DomRep smiling and eager to learn. #worldgeochat
Sadly, I haven't seen any resources used in the 6th grade SS classroom that I am in right now. Most info is put onto slides straight from the textbook and the students are to copy from there... #worldgeochat
A4: Hans Rosling's video that was already shared tonight from @FANgeopolitics, I also like Junior @Scholastic's article "The high cost of Fast Fashion" - it really helps highlight the positives & negatives of Globalization for students. #worldgeochat
A4 Videoconferencing w/ other cultures; @PeaceCorps World Wise Schools has some great resources for the underlying attributes of globalization #worldgeochat
A3 Globalization is negative when the strong take advantage of the weak. Imperialism comes to mind. It works when it is mutually beneficial. #worldgeochat
A4 #worldgeochat I have friends and family throughout the world who teach that I have met at conferences, here on twitter, and other places. I use skype, twitter, and other social networking devices to show how easy it is to connect or demonstrate other pieces of globalization
No textbook or slides needed for this. Ask each kid to stand up. Tell them to check the shirt tag of a partner (same gender) and create a big list of countries on the board. Then ask them to come up with reasons why their clothing is from so many different places.
A5 It depends on the attribute of globalization that I would teach, but my favorites often consisted of having students connect w/ other cultural groups via social media to make the learning & concepts authentic #worldgeochat
A5) lessons that involve the history of food, how products are made (can u find the source of a trade item?) and how tech is used globally are faves of mine #worldgeochat
I've seen debates used before! The students analyzed the pros and cons of globalization and then took on the roles of people discussing the issues with it. They seemed to better understand what it was in the end while also seeing how complex it really is. #worldgeochat
A5 I have used this structured debate from PBS before. My students really get into it. Usually I tack on an extra day of research where we research all their questions that arose. #worldgeochat
I agree with this, Kelly. Whenever students get to add a bit of giggling by doing something out of the ordinary PLUS it makes a statement, it's a great day #worldgeochat

A5: I like doing a "where it's made" scavenger hunt to introduce Globalization so students see where their stuff comes from to get them interested. I have not used the world in a chocolate bar in forever, but I always put up the poster for students to see. #worldgeochat
A5: Wow. This question hit me. Do I have any globalization lessons? My classroom def has a global mentality, but a specific lesson, can't sat that I have one. Hundreds of lessons on particular cultures, but... wow. Thanks for the eye opening! #worldgeochat
Honestly, dissect anything students use - shoes, phones, etc. Let Ss see how even though its made in China, it came from so many other places.
#worldgeochat
A5 Lately, I've been into using Google Earth to identify cultural landscapes. The ability to screenshot something and have a student submit it as evidence is a game changer in my room. #worldgeochat
I create a Google Form that accepts multiple submissions - so they can submit each clothing item they are wearing and the location. It can then be easily plotted on Google Maps. #worldgeochat
A5B Also like the lesson "Are My Hands Clean?" which uses this song & allows Ss to map out a global economic condition https://t.co/6QNF5AdbxG#worldgeochat
Here is the link: We spend about 15 mins in class trying to find everything, and I send out phone representatives to their lockers to find out where it's made. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/DJa4cnFBN1
A6 What about a scavenger hunt?! Send the students on a hunt for certain objects to see where they're made and then come back with picture (or written) evidence... #worldgeochat
A6 Similar idea. Created this, not for globalization, but for economic activities; primary, secondary, tertiary,.... Mapping smarty phones. https://t.co/270WBZ1bEW using My Maps. Not sure if all links still work #worldgeochat
A6) we used to make maps and political cartoons; now with google suite the possibilities are endless! Ss could make websites, blogposts, their own surveys to analyze data, etc #worldgeochat
A6 What about a scavenger hunt?! Send the students on a hunt for certain objects to see where they're made and then come back with picture (or written) evidence... #worldgeochat
A6 #worldgeochat My students have LOVED project were I have had them create @Snapchat videos or videos using @Flipgrid or @Apple s app Clips. They have done some of their deepest thinking and it is a great convo started about tech driving globalization
A6 Can't say I had students create specific products about globalization when taught it, but they did do some action projects. Probably the most memorable was a group of Ss starting a club to raise awareness about child labor & its relation to global exploitation #worldgeochat
Great idea! I do like goose chase and that would be a great way to update the assignment but I also like the list of countries in case I want to map the places our stuff is made. #worldgeochat
A6 used to have students create company ideas they thought would be profitable with a plan to open in Southeast Asia based on labor and resources. It was fun but became more about their marketing campaigns than the research behind their production location. #worldgeochat
I nevr evne thought about doing a classblog where we could all post. Such a simple idea but you can go in a million different directions with it. It could evolve just like globalization. #worldgeochat
A6: I just finished grading my Economy in a Box projects: S's made a map of Import and Export Partners, put a hand held object for both an Import and export, a list of imports and exports, and pictures of imports, exports & the money all in a box. #worldgeochat
