Welcome to We are discussing the Move from Curating to Creating. Please introduce yourself & share the best thing you've created
Good evening! Welcome to for 4/6/16. Psyched to discuss Curating to Creating with this eve! https://t.co/cVM9WbSqwE
I'm Jonathan, a Library & Inst Tech Spec at I co-org with every Wed at 9PM ET and I'm prez elect of
kyle - network admin from philly. finishing up dinner
I'm Sean - Dir of Instructional Tech at in IL. I co-organize w/
Brian-Supt at Pontiac 429 (IL)
Evening Kyle. So I can live vicariously through you, please tell my you only eat Cheesesteaks.
Q1 is coming up in 1 minute. Let's start with curating information.
Julie, tech coordinator from Chattanooga, TN
cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, and tatykakes. all day every day.
Q1: What apps, websites or extensions do you and your students use to curate information?
Jon, HS Spanish in NJ. 1:1 Macbooks year 2.
Welcome Brian. Maybe I'll have to pick you up on my way to playing golf in Bloomington this summer.
Hi Jon. How's year 2 going? We're in yr 2 of iPads.
Hi Shai here from PA. HS Math T. Not sure I can stay too long. Early morning rise. I miss this chat.
All that, and I watched Creed yesterday. My life is complete.
Dan, business teacher from St. Louis, ready to learn!
Nick, HS Geometry in MN, 1st year 1:1 with Chromebooks
Lisa, 2nd grade teacher, 1:1 iPads year 3!
Brett from Iowa. 6th Math and Soc Studies. Year 1 Chromebook
Welcome Dan, great to see you again.
The best thing I created, , was my son, ! He is simply the very BEST of me!
a1: i've been using google+ collections as my latest curation platform.
Tougher than year 1 actually although can't put finder on why. Novelty gone. Few utilizing to full extent.
A1: We use Drive. Focused now on curating portfolios that will form the basis of our Ss led Spring conf https://t.co/poBkpGBlH0
Welcome. I know how you feel. Cubs opened up on West coast this week - I'm feeling it tonight.
A1 live binders, photos for class, library website resources, & I qr code websites for elem Ss often https://t.co/PLhqMKGJhD
Q1: What apps, websites or extensions do you and your students use to curate information?
Did they win? My Pirates won their home opener on Sunday!
So great to see this diverse group of new/old voices this evening! Thank you all so much for joining us. https://t.co/9BX9XgMcqx
A1: I have been using tons of Google. Google drive, docs, sheets, and classroom.
I hear that in some places. Ts feel push & excitement in yr 1, then relax & retreat in yr 2.
A1 for student created information, we post in
A1-GAFE for us right now, plus a few other resources
Sorry to all my friends. Baby Raby #2 arrived 3/13. Going to try to lurk if I can. Hope to be back soon. https://t.co/gVQqzCt4kB
I'm not sure how much longer we can remain friends. Cubs & Pirates are both 2-0. Better yet Cards are 0-2. It's too early
And we saw how much of curriculum we didn't "teach/cover" and go back to old habits so students "learn" more.
a1: i know what i do to curate, but i don't know what my Ts do or what they tell their Ss to use.
A1 we have also moved along of our learning project reports to Students can post with anything
:( I hope you don't hold it against me when the Pirates beat the Cubs! :)
I hear more and more about everyday. Looks like great product.
our k and 1st grades are piloting for the rest of the year. so far, so good.
I believe our elementaries are really exploring for digital portfolios.
is the bee's knees. It is the best product for recording a student's journey
Big Congrats to the Raby Family! Enjoy those moments. In 2 weeks I will officially have 3 teenage daughters
Q2: How do you create a healthy balance between the amount of time spent curating on devices vs paper?
my Cardinals still have plenty of time. It stinks the top 3 teams in MLB are all in one division.
Hi, Cheryl from NC joining late (will I ever be able to NOT say that?)
A2 students need more time with paper. They need to know how to prototype
I think we saw too many Ss floundering when they tried to take notes on their iPads. Back to paper notes & research supports it.
A2: Not sure that paper curating is really still needed. Is it?
A2 I think it depends on the age of S but both equally important for Ss to learn-Expectations need set https://t.co/oDztsM2FAi
Q2: How do you create a healthy balance between the amount of time spent curating on devices vs paper?
A2-Each community will look different, because we need to have a balance between the two that works for Ss.
the phillies aren't in the central. :-P
A2 I must say that I spend the bulk of my time on devices. We r 1:1 so it makes sense in my situation.
Hi, Jill Rice, ITS from Lee's Summit, MO....thought we needed some KC Royal representation here :-). We are 1:1 Chromebooks K-12
No kidding. Baseball needs to re-seed playoffs like Hockey.
A2 we are looking at different ways to integrate paper more often
A2 We spend about half of our day on iPads but if it can be done on paper then we use paper
I find that some kiddos, while I would think would prefer e-readers, actually prefer physical books.
That's a bummer, I wonder why?
Nor are the Mets. & these guys complain we on the East think the world revolves around us.
My students complain when they have to read text on iPad/e-reader. It hurts their eyes
a2: we let the Ss decide what they want to use for curation. i see a lot of paper note taking next to their laptops and ipads.
A2: my Ss work with paper but test online. I want to try and stay old school a big to ensure penmanship n such.
Definitely a difference between HS and K-5 learning environments.
I agree for many Ss but needs to be revisited often- annotating has great value for learning https://t.co/U9rg9pOOQk
I think we saw too many Ss floundering when they tried to take notes on their iPads. Back to paper notes & research supports it.
A2: Using tech when it is purposeful and makes learning better....some days that's all day and others might not use much at all.
I am going to hope it is natural. Need to see what happens in year 3.
Must match tool to task. Sometimes the tool is a device and sometimes it is a pencil.
A1: I use drive as well, lots of forms and docs. Love it but slow learning process for Ss- 1st year 1:1 in 2nd grade.
I knew we should have use a baseball theme this week for our questions.
Of course, I am stating that only if you are 1-1. Not 1-1, it has to look differently. https://t.co/bftIxwobeT
A2: Not sure that paper curating is really still needed. Is it?
it doesn't revolve around us?
A2: Primarily still use paper for problem solving & examples in class, others in school are mostly paperless
A2: At this eve, argued very convincingly for the power of analogue creation that is curated digitally.
A2: Google Classroom has allowed many classrooms to be paperless.
I'm looking more and more at moveable whiteboards or whiteboard paint for entire wall. Building collaboration
I know he's shown App, & I use it to create storyboards for Ss projects
Q3: How have you encouraged your students to use their device to create something that demonstrates their understanding?
A2: As we craft Guiding Principles portfolios in Maine, key component = digitally curated analogue work https://t.co/Tkdf6IJ3ij
A2: Healthy balance by just using what fits in each situation. Lower grades, just can't see devices ever replacing books to read.
A lot of Ts said they would never collect electronically. Then they saw the rubrics in - game changer
A3: My students have used their puppets (once made) to make puppet shows (using ) on devices to demonstrate knowledge.
A2: SO many options in the Google Suite. Try and focus on the 4 C's and pushing to the M and R of the SAMR model.
How does that hold up? We've talked about it in one room in particular.
A3: Ss used keynote/Pages to create portfolio a/b Night. Reflection, photos, quotes & video tied to a theme a/b novel
A3: Absolutely, lots! Create video to summarize a book or create a report, for a graph. org., etc.
A3: We use Educreations or Make Beliefs Comix to show our knowledge.
I have thought about this as well. Do the desks clean up or is there residuel?
Love that idea, in my goals to do before end of year.
Cool idea, might have to look into that.
I think it is needed in some places. Keep balance between digital & physical world, and allows for Ss choice.
Love screencastify and pair with Prezi to do vid and voice over on presentation.
I love puppets. The Ss do too. I have them create puppet shows teaching younger concepts that I share with K-2 Ts.
A3: Sometimes I let them choose any app they want and create a presentation to share. They love the choice!
I think the "choice" part is important. Gives them sense of ownership as well.
We have room where we do a lot of tutoring. I think it would be a great fit in there.
You are right. I was thinking about the sole organization of information, and nothing else. Math always needs pencils.
We use a host of creation apps so kids demonstrate their learning. Keep them all on our team
A3 we use Show Me, seesaw, Google slides, keynote, green screen videos for ex https://t.co/RHKlUF3oPa
Q3: How have you encouraged your students to use their device to create something that demonstrates their understanding?
Ownership & Choice. 2 of my favorite words when it comes to learning environment
We've been working on scripts, my plan is to do puppet show on green screen. Just found green gloves at $ Tree, excited!
A3: Ss are journaling and blogging in Seesaw to capture their Service Learning experiences
Have you used Adobe Voice or Slate?
Yes, same here, really makes the learning relevant!
A3: Our dept works together to keep this resources updated with tools S can use to show their knowledge. https://t.co/CSiHp0L118
not yet. Successful for your students?
Q4 coming up in 1 minute.
Q4: What have your students created with their devices made you want to show the whole world? Did you?
a3: a few of our lower school Ss are making videos & have used seesaw. the higher up the grades you go, the less sharing you see
A3: Best 1 this yr - eBook created by entire Biology class on genetic disorders. 1 chap per Student Includes Exp. Ev. screencast
They like them because they are easy to create. Great way for World Lang Ss to practice pronunciation
That is awesome! I bet they learned so much by being the authors! Personalized learning at it's best!
is slate an app or website?
A4 Kids created civilizations in Minecraft. Amazingly complex. They put a TON of work into them. Blogged about it, yep!
School promotion videos for the website..... Give them a chance to create.... they come through!
a4: if it hasn't gone through our communications department, i haven't seen it and neither has the world.
A4 love green screen videos for a "readbook" book review opportunity last year. All on YouTube https://t.co/3mqunacJpp
Q4: What have your students created with their devices made you want to show the whole world? Did you?
A4 - Spanish 3H students' Bad Lip Reading videos; twitter social media campaign shared
A4: HS Graphic design S create Google Sites to share their work with the world, elem T's that blog regularly and invite comments
Great idea. I want to enlist Ss to create our school iBook as well.
A4: Puppet shows! I kind of did show the whole world but blogging about it. The whole world reads my blogs, right?
We are creating a series of these videos so parents & prospective Ss can see how we use tech in the classroom.
As far as you know - yes.
Q5 coming up in 1 minute.
SEL apps and development.
Whoa!
Q5: What factors can deter teachers from allowing students to be more creative with their devices?
Well, peeps, the time has come to sign off and head to bed. 4 AM comes way to fast, otherwise. So glad I can spend some time.
That's awesome. I know a group of HS students created illustrations for younger Ss book. Can't remember title.
A5: Ts lack of trust with the Ss. When Ts don't build the culture in the classroom for tech use. (I had to stay to answer this Q
A5 Feeling that T's have to know more than S to have S use the tech. Let them explore and teach me!
Glad you can join us. Good luck to your Pirates (but only when they play St. Louis)
A5: not compatible with all devices. Not all Ss having access. Internet outage. Apps not working. General tech problems.
A5: Not knowing more about the device and what it can do
A5-Ts being scared of the unknown. We have to provide support systems to elminate fears.
a5: stifling Ss creativity because Ts aren't comfortable with the tech or changing the curriculum.
A5: I think time restrictions. Sometimes I feel there is not enough time to allow students to get really creative.
They don't trust them to start texting and going off task
A5 - fear of losing control; lack of creativity/knowledge with device; difficulty in "grading" these creations.
A5: TRUST. Ss need some latitude but Ts may be reluctant
A5: some Ts afraid that the work won't be easily marked or moderated on a class/grade level. Have this issue at my school
A5 insecure about their knowledge of tech, not using rubrics for grading so projects have to look same https://t.co/GxGTBY2m9J
Q5: What factors can deter teachers from allowing students to be more creative with their devices?
If they're getting off task that fast, then maybe the task wasn't worth doing.
Time is the almighty restriction we have to always work against
Jumping in at the end- Mandy Froehlich -tech Integrator - wisconsin
A5: The big T word...Time. At some pt most T discover that creativity does not mean more time, and can means better learning
Insecurity is a HUGE deterrent. Trying to change that among some of my friends/colleagues by being their support.
A5: Data, time constrictions, assessments
A5 Fear that the Ss will encounter an issue that they won't be able to fix and they will no longer look like the expert.
Yes! data and assessments! Sometimes I feel that is all I do some weeks!
A5: Teachers can stifle student creativity by being unwilling to give up control and refusing to learn new things
Need to cut out early. Love hearing about other districts. Make to follow others
kudos to you! Relationships and support go hand in hand to successful tech integration :)
Great point. Exactly why I think a BYOD system could be very difficult for most Ts - too many possible issues
Good night, ! Please know that to your Ss. Smile, because you never know when a student will need it the most.
Stuck with the Mint m&ms right off the table. No plates or ladles needed. ;)
Q6 Coming up in 1 minute.
Not quite the dark side but close.
Amen, and if I'm not, I'm behind . . . always behind!
Q6: How can we convince and encourage other teachers to move to the creation side?
1:1 initiatives require planning and preparation. Use our TRAx tool to find out if your school is ready: https://t.co/yePBNSkRiD
A5: AGE + WEAK INFRASTRUCTURE = "Just put them away." I am a device agnostic. But I am an updated + robust wifi CRAZY PERSON.
In order for that to work, Ts need to be comfy saying "I don't know. How about we (you) YouTube that?" Not everyone is
A6: demonstrate for them and hope it peaks an interest. Then offer a session to teach them.
Also, who is working w/ Ts to build a safe environment for them. Teach them how device can ADD to environment
A6: Meet T where they are at and move forward. PD is an important part of that. T need support. Willingness to learn is key.
I do that right in front of them to model it. I'd love Ss to share what they've learned on/from YouTube
A6: PD is important! If they don't know how to use the device, they will not feel comfortable with their Ss creating on them
Use of model T's and EduCoachs to demo how get S to DOK 4 helps, must have willingness to change though
A6:Need to experience and see how it can transform learning for students
A6 Model & give examples. Even most reluctant Ts are impressed w/ S artifacts when they are given the opportunity to create
A6: We have a tech person who meets with our grade level once a week to show us new tech tools to use with our students
A6 support them in their tries and model opportunities/ideas
In the classroom embedded PD is so impactful. Seeing model T in action can help so much!
That is awesome! Many of our teachers would benefit from knowing more about what we can do to help our students
Always start with the Why. I also make sure I never tell them they "SHOULD" or "NEED TO" do anything
A6 Teachers Teaching Teachers Tech. T1 models creation for T2. "I'm using iMovie to..." or "Explain Everything lets us..."
Yes! we are a 1:1 school and it has really helped all our teachers get on board with the concept!
A6: Ss will create solutions. Why not start now? Regurgitating is a waste. Creative/critical thinking is a must!
I'd go one step further & say embedded PD is most important, but not every T has access to that kind of support.
Great plan. Next big step is sharing with each other how you actually used it in your class. Share success & failure
Devices, software, clouds were all once ideas. Our Ss imagine. Let's let them have a go and see what they create!
Like it. Also like "Are we preparing them for their future, or our past?"
A6: Turn a Fac Meeting into a QR code linked Gallery Walk. Each QE -> an example of tech-empowered Creation [insert Oohs & Aahs]
: What resources from tonight’s chat will you implement or share with your teachers or students this week?
Giving them autonomy & freedom is a BIG scary step. Admin needs to model by doing the same for Ts.
Great idea. We're doing modified EdCamp for our next faculty PD. Maybe gallery walk for last PLC
I'm fortunate to work at a school where I have that support!
a6: i've shared local edcamps and got no Ts willing to go for last 3 years. not sure why. i've gone, but i don't teach.
Ditto! Truly blessed to see the changes happening, and to be a part of that process.
Tonight is a reminder to let Ss be the focus and give them space to grow and shine
I have no idea how it's almost 9:00, but thank you for a great chat tonight. Love connecting with my PLN 1 day closer to ISTE!
Fantastic. Positive change can be infectious and create momentum to move ahead!
I need to clarify I support learning via creation. But it is AFFORDED by technology, not reliant on or impeded by it.
Love ! Not just for learn but connections and PLN growth! Also cant get T's to go. Fixed mindset tough fight.
That's too bad. EdCamps are one of the best options in my opinion. They are definitely missing out.
Very difficult to get buy-in on something they don't understand, and kidnapping them is frowned upon.
