Meredith joining from SW Florida to learn more about AI - case of "I don't know what I don't know" but I sure am ready to read what others share. #Whatisschool
I'm Mark Anderson, former teacher and now consultant, speaker and author on things related to teaching, learning and technology. I'm UK based but work around the world. Tonight I'm cohosting #whatisschool with @mrkempnz
Hi to all.Kevin here a Teaching Principal with Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM https://t.co/86nqP8vsUJ has revolutionised teaching and learning #whatisschool
Went to check on your profile and saw that you didn't have any followers yet. LOVED being the first one to follow you! Hope this is the beginning of tons of learning from others. #whatisschool
A1: the best way I find to describe artificial intelligence is machine learning - any tool or device that can learn from the environment it is in #whatisschool
A1. For me, AI is the ability of software to work autonomously to complete a task that otherwise wouldn't be possible (or as easily possible) #whatisschool
A1: to me artificial intelligence happens when technology can do a job that traditionally requires human involvement. I don’t think you can take the human element out of education but certainly our students can learn how use AI to make life easier #whatisschool
I don't know a TON about AI, but technology in general can help reach many types of learners, as well as foster learning engagement (when used right!) #whatisschool
A1 - Siri ... Spell Correction ...Search Assist ... Auto Form Fill ... lots of simple AI ... although I am still waiting for my "Rosie the Robot" from the Jetsons #whatisschool
A1: The Google keynote showed a series of small computers that were systematically learning from one another. I think AI could take our current methods, say a math practice page, to new levels. Take Zone of Proximal development to a new level. #whatisschool
A1: There are so many positives to how it could help in education - I think when put to good use it can help us be more efficient and effective in day to day menial tasks #whatisschool
A1: Artificial intelligence is a machines ability to gather and analyze information to make more informed and accurate decisions in the future #whatisschool
A1) My understanding- AI can mimic certain intelligences and can help us in education in some ways to eliminate monotonous / rote jobs.. giving time for more humane elements #whatisschool
Was just in webinar on assistive tech using consumer electronics for individuals on the autism spectrum. The coach sent prompts to the iWatch to teach a task. Image an AI that responded to a life's worth of patterns including situation, surroundings and sound bytes. #whatisschool
That, for me, Priya, is one of the things that makes me most excited about AI. The ability to examine learner data in order to support them directly where they might need it most is super powerful #whatisschool
A1 an AI is a program that emulates neural networks and is able to use algorithms to adapt it's responses, in education it can be used to predict and diagnose student placements, respond and generate individualized curricular pathways, and do diagnostic assessment #whatisschool
AI can bridge the gap for many students ... reading text ... creating individualized learning opportunities based on student responses ... #whatisschool
A1 AI is computers automating a process, that might be data analytics, or a chatbot. I think eventually AI will help students learn core subjects more efficiently freeing teacher time to do more social and collaborative teaching #whatisschool
A1. Hello from #London. Seeing a rise in Aritifical Intelligence software being used in schools to:
a) reduce teacher workload
b) track student progress
Positives = quick data
Negatives = human still required to transfer to the classroom
#whatisschool#edtech
A1) AI allows a pattern of programs to analyze data to provide feedback on performance or action. It could individualize training and workflow if applied properly and not used as a replacement for good teaching. #whatisschool
A1. I know it’s not the T1000, but not really sure about what A1 is & the true impact it is going to have. If it is a program that learns from users then I imagine individual interfaces where students get personalised learning based on what they have done b4
#whatisschool
So True. It has already done so in some of the day to day household machines giving more time to spend on other things. I am excited to see how it can impact education #whatisschool
A1 Artificial intelligence allows us to use machines to review data, make informed decisions and gain new perspectives without preconceived ideas or human judgment #whatisschool
A1: Artificial Intelligence is that scary thing you see in the movies where the robots look you right in the eyes and say “Hello” and you freak your freak out. #whatisschool
A2: Ss data can guide Ts in a number of directions. AI May help is individualize/customize experiences, especially when blending variety of learners and styles #whatisschool
I think we have become so accustomed to AI being around all the time we don't think of it as AI ... When I think AI my first thought is HAL or robots #whatisschool
Q2 AI could be used to run a localized block chain that would able students to aquire microcredentials as they plan, study, and own their learning #studentagency#whatisschool
A2) First thing that comes to my mind is ability to understand speech in various languages and support diverse students that are new to English speaking environments,Ss can get additional support from AI tutors #whatisschool
A2: One of the greatest challenge a teacher faces is differentiation. Artificial intelligence has the capacity to reshape how we adjust instruction to meet students’ needs. However we have to make sure that it is used to amplify as opposed to replace teachers #whatisschool
A2) Tools that allow faster diagnostics and creation of real world simulations to allow individuals to test theory to prove ideas would be very powerful. If students cannot prove the transfer of knowlege how do we prove learning has taken place. #whatisschool
A2. AI can help in the classroom in a number of ways:
- learner analytics and feedback
- reducing teacher workload
- supporting learners with visual impairment e.g. Seeing AI app https://t.co/SW7TxGt57z
- automating processes for teachers
#whatisschool
A2: Would love to see AI revolutionize individual learning. To tailor learning to the individual. To know what we know and what we need to know. Student and teacher. #whatisschool
So important what you added about "preconceived ideas or human judgment" - educators care so VERY much that it is a challenge to remove it completely when reviewing data. #whatisschool
A1 Artificial intelligence allows us to use machines to review data, make informed decisions and gain new perspectives without preconceived ideas or human judgment #whatisschool
I think the cornerstone of AI should be to ease certain tasks with the goal of MORE teacher-student interaction. Students need the human connection a teacher can provide, and AI can help allow for this development of relationships that matters so much #whatisschool#gccedu
A2: Microsoft translator has huge opportunities for EAL students. Also I imagine if AI gets to know students it could flag them for common errors. Also tools like grammarly for writing #whatisschool
A2. If Artificial Intelligence genuinely can reduce teacher workload rather than require a teacher to be tied to a computer i.e. interpreting the data, then what AI platforms should do, is translate the qualitative data into teacher interventions in the classroom.
#whatisschool
A1 Artificial intelligence allows us to use machines to review data, make informed decisions and gain new perspectives without preconceived ideas or human judgment #whatisschool
A2 How does AI fit ... everywhere and many are already using it ... creating leveled readings for students ... my kids use Siri ... search assist in Google ... when I am looking for food on my phone it shows me stuff around #whatisschool
A2 I love the idea of AI being another teaching tool that allows educators to provide individualised, personal learning opportunities that adapt to student’s styles and needs. #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/RZqrfOhwGw
A2: Everything computer based that we currently do would become increasingly better wouldn't it? We know how to hone in on a student. Once AI learned this it would get better & better at it. #whatisschool
A2) AI allows the processing of data sets that would be too large for any human team to do in a timely manner for a classroom. But this number crunching allows us to show trends that are the result of a lot of Trial & Error. This speeds learning up alot! #whatisschool

A2: teaching students the basics of Code and exposing them to AI can create opportunities here students can identify problems in our world that can be solved with AI in the near future. #whatisschool
I totally agree Meridth - it’s a part of human nature that enters all decision making process. AI and an understanding if ourselves might allow educators to be less biased #whatisschool
A2) AI reducing workload won’t happen by just automating teacher admin tasks. Needs to support teaching, AfL, student rote learning of knowledge #whatisschool
A2. I’ve been looking at a few different programs that allow teachers to assign, personalise, assess... if you added AI into the mix - a program that would see you were having trouble learning to tell the time based on a low quiz score, so assign a task to help. #whatisschool#AI
Where AI is powerful isn't in the marking of the tests, be it multiple choice or other, it's the analytics it can perform on individual or group performance highlighting quickly and easily where knowledge deficits exist thus closing the feedback loop #whatisschool#longsentence
I agree, I hope I am around to see it!! The simulations that would be possible could be so much fun and not just "in your mind". Interactive, engaging and exciting. #whatisschool
#whatisschool A2 Think parrot on the shoulder of an explorer (student) navigating an #arvrinedu space. AI might give each student different feedback/coaching based on likes, dislikes or actions through the environment.
A2.I have Irelands first and only Primary School STEAM Room.We are at the coalface of ICT and. Tech in teaching the https://t.co/dE2YuhDIL3 has me scared #whatisschool
Use AI & big data to look at our digital lives, Amazon, Google, YouTube, Netflix, Pinterest. We may not look alike, though we see things through the same lenses. #whatisschool
I'm so curious about that. What kinds of things was it able tell them? I worry about machines over-correcting language, if you know what I mean. Writer's craft is actually filled with "mistakes" #whatisschool
A3. Now that I understand this better I see how we have used programs that personalize learning for students like @Successnet from Pearson and one of their beginning writing programs (seems to have been replaced). #whatisschool
Where AI is powerful isn't in the marking of the tests, be it multiple choice or other, it's the analytics it can perform on individual or group performance highlighting quickly and easily where knowledge deficits exist thus closing the feedback loop #whatisschool#longsentence
It can describe scenes which would be helpful to those who cannot see them. It also helps in other ways which I'm sure Craig will share with you #whatisschool
A3: I've never used it, but I've heard of something called Thinkster Math, which helps assess students' strengths and weaknesses in math.
#whatisschool
A3: I used Google Explorer (while not quite AI) to show music students great theatre/ music venues around the world, so they could understand/ experience production values. #whatisschool
Understand, but program was an improvement over teachers up half the night writing responses that students only sometimes looked over. It allowed teachers time to individually conference with students about their writing - enhancing results from the program #whatisschool
I'm so curious about that. What kinds of things was it able tell them? I worry about machines over-correcting language, if you know what I mean. Writer's craft is actually filled with "mistakes" #whatisschool
Some tools for the classroom with AI built in that I use currently are:
- Seeing AI
- Quizizz
- Quizlet
- Immersive Reader
- Grammarly
- Siri
#whatisschool
#whatisschool A3 Strictly speaking probably not AI.. I use several #DJI drones to capture 360 panoramas to use in #arvrinedu projects. They have sensors to keep me out of harms way..
I met with a guy from one of the big eBook reader devices. He said he could tell me when I got bored and when I fell asleep from my user data. #whatisschool
Wanted to share that students with the largest gains using the AI Pearson program were those of the lowest achievers. It pinpointed the exact skills the students needed and continued to reinforce until teacher could intervene or student understood. #whatisschool
A3: I tell my students that google classroom assesses their work for me. If they don’t like their grade, chat to google. They don’t question it. Mostly... #whatisschool
A3) not much in classroom yet, I have seen few like seeingAI, Grammarly. But at home , we just love our Google home:) , would love to know what’s available for classrooms #whatisschool
Agreed! When I went to look for the name of the program it seems to have been replaced by something newer. Makes sense that they are improving it as our AI knowledge improves. #whatisschool
I think I still need to get my head aroundwhat AI really is. I have Asimov in my head & know that is not it. I them went down the Artificial intelligence v machine learning rabbit hole
#whatisschool
That is where the largest gains in education will be seen at first; helping the lowest achievers move forward faster than working with human teachers alone. #Whatisschool
I've seen it used for arts and history- seeing museums, sculptures, paintings, etc., bringing various topics they're learning about come to life #whatisschool
What you said is SO important. Teachers in +5th grade, with students at pre-reading (K) levels, have a VERY challenging time meeting those needs and balancing the learning of 30 other students. This program helped tremendously! #whatisschool
That is where the largest gains in education will be seen at first; helping the lowest achievers move forward faster than working with human teachers alone. #Whatisschool
My son works in an AI startup and says "Applying it to a new domain often means, a lot of failure needs to be tolerated before you start seeing results" so I imagine the program is constantly being updated. #whatisschool
A3 I think we are only just starting to see basic AI entering the classroom built into apps and tools. However I’m excited about the potential that’s offered by AI in terms of individualised learning that adapts and grows with students #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/Pf25JbIXoC
A4: A feedback and suggestion app that lets the student know how they are working, gives them tips and provides them with ways to take their projects to the next level. #whatisschool
A4: being 1:1 has advantages as Ss can be connected to data, others and the globe instantly. When used properly, tech is an incredibly powerful tool that can enhance Ss experiences #whatisschool
A4) Anything that can put the student virtually into a physical environment where the student could interact in real time. Think too expensive or far away would be huge. Lets call it what it is: I want a holodeck from Star Trek #whatisschool
A4. I often use Siri in class when finding those answers that you just need like the strength of a password.
Having a Alexa or Siri in class would be great. ‘What’s the lunch special?’ ‘Send message to all teachers “Who has...” ‘Mark Timmy present’
#whatisschool
A4. An app that knows how I'm doing in all of my subjects and can offer me instruction in where I'm weakest to help me improve and develop those weaknesses, guided by my teacher. #whatisschool
I left the school where we were using these programs four years ago - the chat reminded me of how exciting it was/what a huge difference it was making for some students. #whatisschool
A4) AI combined with AR in a pair of smart glasses, tells me student names (floating over their heads), what they are doing on their devices, traffic lights them, gives suggestions for feedback I could give for learning. A bit too crazy maybe #whatisschool
A4 #whatisschool I'd love to see a tool that could help me sort my procrastinators from my precrastinators & help manage stress levels. https://t.co/N0WXIAnVfq
A4: A program that could analyse students progress and provide real time feedback to students, but can also supply teachers with ways to support and extend students learning #whatisschool
A4) Imagine what we could do with #PBL if we could create simulations to test driving questions with student responses. What is we could turn a student loose on an inquiry model of learning they could control. Powerful stuff #whatisschool
I found it! https://t.co/0BXu4xhEeT We traveled to Phoenix where a team of people were working on developing programs for Pearson. It was very interesting! #whatisschool
I'm so curious about that. What kinds of things was it able tell them? I worry about machines over-correcting language, if you know what I mean. Writer's craft is actually filled with "mistakes" #whatisschool
A4 I would like to see AI becoming more prominent in student social and emotional wellbeing. Providing support, ideas, advice based on students ongoing and changing needs #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/CIsIcW0lfl
A5: We hear that often. I wonder if it’s fear more than any other reason. Kind of like holding on to what I’ve known and know well rather than learning and losing elements of control. #whatisschool
A5) You simply do not have a choice. Adapt & grow or stagnate and die. Technology will not stop, slow, or quit. As AI trains itself, how do you stop it? #whatisschool
A5 - I honestly feel like I am this teacher sometimes. I've been trying to learn more about technology myself so I can incorporate it in my classroom. #whatisschool
A5: I think educators can fall into the trap of using tech just to use tech, and place too much of (and an incorrect) emphasis on it. But, with all the tools we have available today, it's foolish to not take advantage of ways that can reach students better. #whatisschool
Pick 1 thing a year to get good at. Find specific folk on twitter that are good at it. Follow who they follow. Than add to it. It'll add up quick. Your learning curve will flatten as well. #whatisschool
A5. I find with colleagues like this, finding some technology that will make their life easier is a fab 'in' to showing how #edtech helps. Whether it's Post it plus, Office Lens, Google Keep or audio recording for feedback. Like all learners, I think you need a hook #whatisschool
A5 Embrace, understand and grow - or be left behind. AI is another tool to support you in developing well rounded students equipped for an unknown future #whatisschoolhttps://t.co/2uyHztXsTn
A5) don’t get left behind, AI is not here to take your job but to has the potential to relieve you from monotonous, tedious tasks giving to time for creative, humane work. It will not eliminate Teachers but help them to do their job efficiently.
#whatisschool
A5: We hear that often. I wonder if it’s fear more than any other reason. Kind of like holding on to what I’ve known and know well rather than learning and losing elements of control. #whatisschool
a5 Here are some cool tech tools, play around with them and see that you think. PLAYdates in PD have really helped our 'frightened' Ts get on board with tech #whatisschool
A5: "Good morning! How are u? I heard Ss talking about your class today. U really got 'em thinking! Think it's gonna warm up today? I know, everyone's getting punchy. Glad we have each other to keep spirits up! Hey, if u wanna see, I'm using tech. today. Come by!"#whatisschool

A5. Even though the internet was in full force during my first year of teaching, we still had attendance books that each teacher was responsible for. We had to calculate all absences at the end of each quarter. It took forever and mine never added up. #whatisschool
A5. I have been trying to figure out how to use tech to provide spaces for educators to collaborate and extend their learning about the books they have recently read. created this https://t.co/NdRMmE2ym8 but I wish I had the creativity to know more #whatisschool
A5: we owe it to our Ss to take advantage of any tool that can better the experience for the kids. They are our WHY and we, as lead learners, need to be seeking tools to assist our Ss #whatisschool
A5) I try to show my instructors how this will make life simpler so they can concentrate on their passion with the students. That is where the power is. #whatisschool
A5. This year’s high school graduates are the last ones born outside the 21st century. Our primary school students have never lived in a world without YouTube & iPads. If you want to be an educator in this time you must be ready to change
#whatisschool
I always say when it comes to teacher adoption of #edtech it's more about attitude than aptitude. Go in happy to have a go and that's all anyone can ask #whatisschool

@gcouros shares the truth we already know but some still drag their heels - such as those not learning from others on Twitter. In five minutes we can learn SO much! #whatisschool
Wrapping the chat up is Question 6...
What do you think are the essential elements of a digital teaching toolkit? Including (or not) artificial intelligence?
#whatisschool
A6: No tools just skills / mindsets --> Positivity, Confidence, Self-Belief, Willingness to Learn, Willingness to Share and being connected #whatisschool
A6: variety of tools to reach Ss where they are. No magic tool for every student, but we have plenty to keep trying until we find the right one. Might even be time to listen to a student. #whatisschool
A6: The ability to reach, excited, and engage as many learners as possible. Tech can aid immensely in this, so why squander its abilities? Impact your students! #whatisschool
A6) Storytelling before anything else. Text, images, video, audio are all componenets of digital toolkits; but mean nothing without the story to engage the emotions of the reciever. #whatisschool
A6: Resources, modeling/video/pics, content, tools that lend access to all learners. connection between software and hardware (physical world). Add curiosity, fun & a bit of crazy and stir! #whatisschool
A6) I work with highered students at a media school and I see that formal education really crushes the ability to tell a good story. We need to rethink this and put that back into communication. #whatisschool
1. Anything that gives student voice and choice; 2. anything that gives Ts an insight into Ss learning that is then used to plan further learning 3. anything that focusses on the learning not the technology
I think AI is important, but other essential tech tools can include videos, smartboards, Google Translate, and even Virtual Reality, depending on what you are teaching.
#whatisschool
I think AI is important, but other essential tech tools can include videos, smartboards, Google Translate, and even Virtual Reality, depending on what you are teaching.
#whatisschool
A6. Essentials of a digital toolkit... connection & attitude & skills. Tech comes & goes, but the attitude & skills you need kind of stay constant. And if not for connections, like a PLN, there would be so much that I did not know & people I would not have met.
#whatisschool
I remember what challenges I had with using programs that had AI - teachers thought it would replace them. It just aids in allowing time to sit with many students while others are learning the specific skills they need. Teacher/student time together is SO important #whatisschool
Thank you to @ICTEvangelist and @mrkempnz for putting together a great chat tonight! I really enjoyed learning about AI and more about being a teacher who impacts. It will all certainly help in continuing my education and experience! #whatisschool#gccedu
So many people have taken part in the chat tonight, it would take me another hour to thank you individually. Can I just say thanks to everyone for coming and sharing and to Craig as always for bringing it all together. Thank you 🙏🏻 #whatisschool
A5) Teaching our students to navigate, create and problem solve with tomorrow’s technology is all our work. We must help our students connect their learning with the environment they live in. #whatisschool
