A group of dedicated educators gather each week to discuss best practices & designing the school of the future. @yankee_todd is a third year principal of the middle school in San Antonio. #neisdpln is an amazing hour each Monday night at 7:30 central time.
Good evening Twitterverse. Michael Benavides, Instructional Technology Specialist for Reagan HS @reaganwayrhs and Driscoll MS here. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A1: Using social media helps to engage students. Incorporating it into the classroom also gives a model of how social media can be used constructively. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A1: Social Media is HUGE. It has provided amazing learning opportunities beyond my 4 walls and given authentic learning experiences. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
I think that social media allows us to connect to other students in a way we weren’t able to before. We used to do Pen Pals when I was a kid, now we can use Skype to actually talk and see kids their own age. It brings the world to them. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A1: it’s 2018 so social media should absolutely be an integral part of the classroom. Proper modeling is key for young learners as they navigate its importance. #neisdpln
A1: I think Social Media should and already plays a huge role in our classrooms. We already use @twitter & @instagram & We use platforms that are similar & use threads like @seesaw & @Google classrooms #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A2: A lot of times student only use social media for social experiences. As teachers we need to know enough about using social media to show them how to be responsible with it. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A2. Important to have age-appropriate conversations at every level about proper use of social media. Don't just ban it & hope for the best. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
Some teachers are texting me that they are just watching tonight to observe and learn. This is a GREAT way to be part of an #EdChat when it's new to you. #LurkLearnLead#neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2: Model model model. My students have seen me blog, they have blogged and participated in @Twitter chats; important to have those conversations and show them appropriate use. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2: Talk about current events! Let them know their opinions matter and they can change the national conversation if done correctly. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2: I feel giving kids examples of proper social media use is key. We look at my Twitter feed/replies quite often and I do think alouds when I post our classroom happenings. #neisdpln
A2: In Pre-K Social Emotional learning is part of everything we do. Living in such a digital age, this has to be explicitly taught. Also, teaching kids that that real life isn’t like the games you play on a device. If you use hurtful words or hands it can hurt. #neisdpln
A2: I feel giving kids examples of proper social media use is key. We look at my Twitter feed/replies quite often and I do think alouds when I post our classroom happenings. #neisdpln

A2. A good litmus test for modeling would also be to ask yourself, "If I shared my Twitter with my parents and students would I need to delete any Tweets?" #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2: like others said, modeling what is appropriate! Also, guiding ss on what it means to be a good digital citizen. Many students’ lives revolve around social media, showing them how to balance being present online & in person #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2: I believe modeling proper use of social media is key. Also, displaying appropriate posts and having authentic discussions about effective social media use are a must. #neisdpln#neisdtweechers
A2:We can help guide our students' SEI in the digital age through modeling and reflective conversations. Digital relationships can lack EI; genuine meaning is not always apparent when not in person. I think we can and should help our students find a good balance! #Neisdpln
Some teachers are texting me that they are just watching tonight to observe and learn. This is a GREAT way to be part of an #EdChat when it's new to you. #LurkLearnLead#neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
Q3: I think that the grade isn't what's important, it is the level of monitoring that parents can give their children. Kids need to learn responsibility and have boundaries on s m, just like any other aspect of their lives. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A3: In the classroom 3rd grade is a great place to start but with guidance and monitoring for educational purposes. But as a parent, I'm not even ready to have my 5th grader on social media. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A3: This is a tough one! I think various factors come into play. I would say middle school would be a good time for students to be introduced to social media, and how to responsibly use it. #neisdpln#neisdtweechers
A3: I doubt there is one special grade level where students will be ready to engage in social media on their own. It would depend on the class dynamics and whether they have had great conversations and demonstrations of how to use it in a meaningful way. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A3: Parent decision. Many of my middle schoolers have social media accounts, but a lot are connected to their parents’ accounts. One of the great things about apps like @ClassDojo or @Seesaw is that ss can start practicing social media etiquette with teacher guidance. #neisdpln
Considering most social media accounts have a no under 13 rule, then it’s more appropriatefor older grades, but you have to start as early as possible talking about your digital presence. How do you want to portray yourself to the ENTIRE world??#neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A3. I think that it is definitely a parental decision, but we should be educating the students long before-hand to practice good habits. Some Ss start w/out parent knowledge #neisdpln#neisdtweechers
A4. LOL! Yes, especially with older students and if it is relevant to your curriculum. If it's out there, they are seeing it. A class discussion can help dispel misconceptions. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: Because it is becoming part of politics, I think that students need to be made aware of how s m is being used and how to get the information. I think that they also need to learn to do the research on fact and fiction in looking at those tweets. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A4: Yes! Incorporating others' perspectives adds to the conversation and learning. Obviously some discretion should be used and a conversation about whether these public figures are actually experts/educated in a certain field or just popular should ensue. #NeisdPLN
A4: Depends on the tweet and person! We can have some great conversations in #5thGrade GT about philosophy and ethics with worldly events. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: YES! In the beginning of the year, we practiced editing by fixing celebrity tweets. They loved it and had fun laughing at their favorite celebrities. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: Another hard question. I think it’s just like anything else you use in class from a public figure. It has to be cited, and you have to discuss how this makes you feel about the person. It’s a good teaching tool. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: YES! In the beginning of the year, we practiced editing by fixing celebrity tweets. They loved it and had fun laughing at their favorite celebrities. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: As long as it states facts and not an agenda. Digital Citizenship is key. Model it used correctly and model how public figures use it correctly. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: YES! In the beginning of the year, we practiced editing by fixing celebrity tweets. They loved it and had fun laughing at their favorite celebrities. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A1. Definitely, a motivator for students knowing their work will be seen/heard by others. Love what @kjohnson2009 said about connecting families to what their students do at school. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A4: Depending on whose tweets you are looking at I bet you could spark a great classroom conversation! I’ve never done it but it could be great to look at different points of view on a topic. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
Q5: Every, and I mean EVERY potential employer looks at an applicants social media footprint. As well as colleges and universities #NeisdTweechers#neisdpln
Q5 I think an informative discussion about the repercussions involving what is put out on media and how it will be perceived currently and in the future.#neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A5: I think it is key to talk about our digital footprint's permanence. It is also important for students to understand how to show their best selves in s m. That can be hard when you're young and not thinking about the future. #NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A5: Using real life situations. You have to let them know that what they do on the internet is seen by everyone. And, having the tough conversations about certain things can get you in serious trouble. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A2. Great question! Just the way teachers teach and guide students towards becoming better communicators, better classmates face to face... Students need to learn by doing how to be good digital citizens and communicators. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A5: Authentic conversations, modeling, and age-appropriate discussions. Nobody wants to listen to rules, integrate them into the lesson. Elem. Ss can't focus on next year much less a future job and how their social media presence will be important. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A5: I think we need to help students understand privacy settings, the concept that nothing is private online (ie marketing info grabs by FB & Google), the repercussions of oversharing, and the importance of having a sense of self-respect, responsibility, & ethics. #NeisdPLN
A5:I will remind my students that their tweets will follow them and they need to be professional when making comments on social media. #neisdpln#neisdtweecher
A6: As a choir director I am always working with students to make longer phrases in the music. That often means figuring out a stagger breathing strategies. Now, whenever I say 'DON'T BREATHE THERE!' they reply with #whoneedslungs#NeisdPLN#NeisdTweechers
A6: Middle schoolers LOVE hashtags 🤪 I don’t think I can even remember all of them! Here’s one we made when reflecting on a quote. #neisdpln#NeisdTweechers
A6: my 3rd graders will sometimes say “hashtag Cross Chronicles” when a classmate does something worth sharing because they know that’s our class hashtag! #CrossChronicles#neisdpln
