Hi friends! Great to be co-moderating #ICEilchat tonight with my buddy @ideaguy42! Please join us as we discuss: Enhancing Literacy Through Modern Digital and Physical Learning Space. The conversation starts now with @ice_il#ICE18
I'm Kristin from #Chicago. Teacher, innovator & author of Amplify: Digital Teaching and Learning. I'm an avid reader, fun-seeker and #Cubs fan. #ICEilchat#ICE18
I'm looking forward to the #ICE18 conference February 26-28 in Schaumburg. @ice_il is the first educational technology conference I ever attended! It will be an honor to be a featured speaker at this event with an organization from whom I've learned so much. #iceilchat
A1 For example, today most news websites open with an image or short video, and text is a click away. How do we read those images and evaluate them to decide what we might "read on" about and pursue past the headline? #iceilchat#ice18
A1: I started Not Your Grandma's Book Club, which I'll be presenting at #ICE18, to bring in Twitter, Flipgrid, YouTube, Thinglink, etc. to our #litcircles. #ICEilchat
A1 Really exploring listening comprehension and the skills needed to effectively comprehend an audio book or podcast. It's a very different experience than reading print text, yet we haven't taught students strategies for this type of thinking. #iceilchat#ice18
Kristin, this reminds me of the conundrum of determining what is just click bate, and what is a legitimate article for reading online. #iceilchat#ice18
A1 Talking a lot with kids how digital access and globalization provides an opportunity for us to HEAR the stories of others. But are we engaging in deep listening? How do we do that? And what can we do to take action upon issues that pull our hearts? #iceilchat#ice18
A2 For me, best practice literacy can be taught across the day in every subject. If we really teach kids strategies for interacting with information and how to tackle it, we have the opportunity to teach them to think all day long. #iceilchat#ice18
A3 This year we've looked a lot at bias through ads, commercials and picture books. We're building understanding to fake vs. valid news sources. #iceilchat#ice18
A3 I'm working a lot to expand the definition of what it means to read: images, video, graphics are all ways that we can read and kids need instruction and time to build fluency in order to do so effectively! #iceilchat#ice18
I totally agree-understanding how to read a chart for trends is so important! I try to incorporate bar charts, line graphs and pie charts to promote that visual understanding. #iceilchat#ice18
I'm doing a workshop on news literacy at #ice18 where I hope to share a lot of these useful tools. This is so important in today's information age! #ICEilchat
A4 I wish I more space, but would love to have tables that fold up so we can move them away to the wall when we need more space. I'd also love to have more than one LCD projector so students could use around the room in small group teaching circles. #iceilchat#ice18
A5 The additional of multi-media! Video, podcasts, images, graphics, AR/VR all provide students additional ways to interact with information!! This is a WIN FOR KIDS. #iceilchat#ice18
A5 Multi-touch books: Allow students to hear a sentence read to them. The ability to look up a word and have it defined within the reading experience. Embedded video to build background knowledge. Links to additional information. #iceilchat#ice18
A7 Student Centered Literacy looks like: Lots of time w text. A robust library where students can choose what they want to read. On-going, personalized instruction based on student needs. Careful kid-watching and observation from the teacher that guides teaching #iceilchat#ice18
Getting ready for a late night #ice18 planning meeting with the AMAZING @amber_heffner and @chanatown. Did you get registered before the early bird pricing changes on 1.31? It's not too late! https://t.co/TzkueyCV7S
