Good evening from Canyon Lake getting back in the groove after a week out
Jay, principal from Merton, WI, checking in to . My was conferring with students in readers' & writers' workshop this week.
Let’s get started. Tonight’s topic is coaching with mid-year data.
The POWER OF TEACHER REFLECTION & COACHING! https://t.co/0Gub7fRBEA
Good evening , a teacher is showing gains in test scores and is still on cloud nine, all because she was open to reflection
Q1: What types of data do you use in coaching teachers?
I want to see now! https://t.co/QnD5JeWYQD
Mandy, first year IC in TX. Got to train with last week. Head is still spinning!
A1: Assessment data - mostly formative, but some summative.
Was it you that called it Tech Mex Tuesday's? Tech and chips and salsa!
What types of assessments?
PERFECT! Coach/principal support for each other is critical to moving forward! TEAMWORK!
I just attended a workshop today on data and how to use it in coaching capacity! Perfect timing!
A1 Ts responses to what they feel gap is and why
Oh, great! Please tell us more.
We are reading Better Conversations by Jim Knight. Meeting once a month.
A1: Some teachers using last semester grades or formative assessment data. Others using reflections from observations. All useful
A1. Now, classroom data from observation. Hoping to discuss Study Island and PVAAS end of year and next year!
Anxious to hear what you learned at your workshop!
I'm learning to be intentional about communication with principals and keep school plan at focus https://t.co/MUcX1Tkgtm
PERFECT! Coach/principal support for each other is critical to moving forward! TEAMWORK!
A1:So far I've mainly used district benchmark data Interested to hear what others use
Where do I even start? It focused on PVAAS and CDT
Miss you, Jay! Love when my Twitter worlds collide!
Would love to hear more of what you learned. What are your aha's?!
A1 Fountas and Pinnell and MAPS and classroom assessments. https://t.co/1uBUm5JzPo
Q1: What types of data do you use in coaching teachers?
A1: I like using to chart areas for Ts then have them reflect on. I help by asking Qs that get them 2 know thy impact
I was thinking of assessments in my work directly with Ts for setting student learning goals.
That is a critical step in the coaching process.
a1: unit and district assessment data. ❤️to see growth of students and to see where we can target to continue growth
Picking some tech tools, setting up stations 4play time (no presentation), have coaches 4support as needed
Not tweeting as much due to basketball coaching. Hope to get back into it in March after the season is over.
A1 o servarion of Ss and their level of engagement
Q2: How does use of data mid-year in work with teachers work into a year long coaching experience?
Never heard of this program. Hmm...will need to look into it!
Putting up posters for Ts to collaboratively brainstorm integration into lessons while playing
S observation of engagement
Sounds great for a new 1:1 building! Great idea!
A1: We also use survey data for PD and I use the Woodruff scale for monitoring my coaching (https://t.co/Syrw1FC4PT )
MAP scores for instruction. Student FA data. Time use data (Ss & Ts) & engagement strategies.
In the same boat! Good luck!
A2 through reflection of first half, goal setting, action plans, reflection and goals for next fall adjustments
Video is a cool (scary) data source. Ts view independently, then reflect with coach. Focus on teaching
A2 Right now many coaches are helping Ts reflect on winter screening data and making adjustments in classroom & interventions.
A2: I think using data mid-year is most effective when it's a part of the cycle. It must be seen as part of ongoing process.
A2: My Ts write Student Learning Goals for year and do a mid-point check. They are ready for strategies if Ss aren't there yet.
Very true. The cycle of growth! https://t.co/19ni398ews
A2: I think using data mid-year is most effective when it's a part of the cycle. It must be seen as part of ongoing process.
A2 Not a clue. Still new at this gig and keeping head about water :)
A1: Ts select areas of desired growth from eval. rubric for individualized coaching. Aka IndividualizedGrowthPlan (IGPs)
Mid year scores are great for course correction, but must be formative
A2 It's a great check point for celebration, reflection, and readjustment- a halftime pep talk. https://t.co/ZyGbZAlOHr
Q2: How does use of data mid-year in work with teachers work into a year long coaching experience?
A2. Using benchmarks and diagnostics to prep for PD and upcoming assessments. Used in long term as reflection tool
A2. Hard to face the reflection part -- no one likes the truth and data doesn't lie. Data is powerful though!
A2:Mid-yr data is good opp to look at S growth and evaluate needs
Yes...it can be easy to come up with explanations/excuses for lack of growth and not focus on change.
Best answer! Love that you are here at Welcome!
Q3: What types of data would you consider adding to mid-year work with teachers?
Coming in late for a little wisdom.
Welcome Melanie! So glad you could make it to tonight
A3: I could see adding data more specific to our initiatives or to follow up on PD. Are they using what they learned?
I'm first year myself. Let's learn together!
Lol--me too! is a good place to be :)
Of course! There are so many types of data, good to look at a variety and celebrate all successes!
totally saved me my first year (and second... and now 3rd!)
A3: Student engagement numbers relative to types of instruction. Is the teaching making a difference??
A3: referral data, attendance, student work
A1: growth measures as teacher impact. Pose question: How do we change instruction to impact student growth?
A3 Feedback data for coach would also be helpful midyear.
A3: Emerging questions. Student feedback data. Teachers' evolving perceptions of their practice.
A3 The relationship of student goal setting to the teacher goal. https://t.co/5i1jcpD0Rv
Q3: What types of data would you consider adding to mid-year work with teachers?
A3: S surveys, video, revisit EOY goals.
A3: I'm using writing assessment data to target students and begin S centered coaching cycles
A2: Mid year reviews allow for goal setting and to reflect on what works; although this should be happening all year.
Why Ts should develop social/emotional skills & how to do it: Teachers' Social/Emotional Skills | Edutopia https://t.co/xsadVrvxSz
A3:Would love to see Ts collecting data from several form assessments, their self-reflects & include S self-assessments
I like the video idea a lot. Need to get more teachers using our
I modeled use of in our last staff mtg...recording myself for personal reflection.
We have lots of midyear data-points from DRPs, performance assessments, reading comp. Analyze where Ss are and set goals together
Definitely! I love to hear how I'm doing!
We have the in elem. and they love it!
Love this answer about writing! https://t.co/1J0JApR3ka
A3: I'm using writing assessment data to target students and begin S centered coaching cycles
Q4: In what ways does work with data enhance the coaching experience with teachers?
Soft data like Ss engagement as well as hard data like student formative assessment growth
Ooh, ooh. I want one :-) https://t.co/dAPDkTNiTT
I modeled use of in our last staff mtg...recording myself for personal reflection.
A3: student's own data analysis to create ownership of learning
A4: Data shifts the conversation from "what's wrong with teaching" to "what's next for students?"
A3: Soft data like Ss engagement as well as hard data like student formative assessment growth
A4: Data takes the emotion, breaking down barriers
THey will send you a demo one for a month.
Oooh ! Requested trial so I can develop sales pitch for my admin 😉
A4 Seeing data, especially student-centered data, takes the "personal" issue out. Tcher more open to professional growth
A4 Data is the vehicle that drives coaching. (Observation data collected by coach, S goals, etc) Coach & T reflect and set goals
I think I heard something like that on once...
A4. Data gives concise, real truth. There is no bias. Turns into real convo and looking at their teaching not based on opinion.
A4 - Tangible way to approach a crucial conversation. Good learning moments. https://t.co/VJjidiHraA
Q4: In what ways does work with data enhance the coaching experience with teachers?
A4: Student data is concrete evidence of learning. Then create instructional plan to move Ss forward.
A4 data allows for dialogue based on concrete results can take opinions out & base conv on facts focuses convos on spec targets
Couldn't have said it better myself! Much better put
A4: trying that again...Data takes the emotion out, breaking down barriers
A4:This https://t.co/FlqatNowr7
A4 Seeing data, especially student-centered data, takes the "personal" issue out. Tcher more open to professional growth
Q5: What are ways in which a focus on data may limit the coaching experience with teachers?
a4: replaces anecdotal evidence with harder data.
A5. If it's not rolled out correctly, data can be a huge turnoff to Ts!
ah! I missed 30 mins of tonight! Must get it together this week! 😔😁😳😡
A5: What can be counted isn't always what counts... I'm stealing/changing a lot of quotes tonight...
A4 Data provides a talking point and a way to focus for areas of celebration and professional development. https://t.co/UWzeCXhBQW
Q4: In what ways does work with data enhance the coaching experience with teachers?
participating in with fellow colleagues 2night
A5 If we happen to be in a Data Rich/Information Poor (DRIP) environment. Data is not thought of kindly. Need to use data!
It can be hard to shift the conversation from the data to "now what?"
A4: can be a jumping off point for identifying areas to target-for students and teachers. Answers, "how do we know they've got it"
A5: What can be counted isn't always what counts... I'm stealing/changing a lot of quotes tonight... https://t.co/gz77mpSx5k
Q5: What are ways in which a focus on data may limit the coaching experience with teachers?
A5: sometimes anecdotal data does just the trick. Numbers can be messy, confusing, or misleading.
A5 not using the right data, not digging deep enough, not triangulating data
A5: Has to be good data. #4&^&5^& in is #$%^&^% out
Hi everyone. Shelley, Secondary math coach from Bay Area CA. Excited to be joining my first chat (though a bit late).
A5 Teaching and learning is not all about data. Sometimes it doesn't tell the entire story. https://t.co/Nk9FdDT0vN
Q5: What are ways in which a focus on data may limit the coaching experience with teachers?
A5: Data can also be threatening in that Ts don't always feel like they can control it.
WELCOME! So glad you found us!
love my network! Can't believe I survived first year last year without this group! 😬🙄
A5: if only data, may lack trust & relationship
A5: If Ts don't believe in the assessment/not invested in assessment, they won't value the data
A5: Mostly, data is a great launching point. Setting student centered goals leads to important conversations about instruction
Q6: What are your highest priorities as you reach mid-year in your work with teachers?
A5: misinterpretation of data and using partial data is a challenge and obstacle coaches must take head on
:co-planning and co-teaching a common math task with a team of Algebra 2 teachers this past week. Great reflections too!
A5: When data meets emotion, emotion always wins. Need to choose conversations wisely
A6 Celebrate wins. Grow from challenges so students can succeed!
A6: Moving those students that are sticky. How can we change something so that Ss who don't grow make growth
A5: when it is not used as a growth tool, but as a weapon to discredit a professional.
Q6 building confidence, encouraging rest, focusing on specifics, enjoyment
Agreed, b/c trust a priority in coaching relationship! https://t.co/XzkHyDmSFM
A5: if only data, may lack trust & relationship
A6 Celebrations, open conversations, setting goals for students and the teacher. https://t.co/crLq6RJ7ch
Q6: What are your highest priorities as you reach mid-year in your work with teachers?
A6: Highest priority is to wrap up coaching cycles and enroll new Ts, while balancing PD responsibilities...
A4: Data allows the analysis process to occur which then leads to better instructional decisions and practices.
A5: the art of teaching is just as important a focus. Data isn't everything
That was a part of our last gr level plcs: students lacking the will to learn (not the skill). Tricky.
A5: Pointing to negative data creates defensiveness & neg coaching relationship
A1: We've used data from Activity Builder teacher dashboard to identify common misconceptions and next teaching moves.
A5: I bet that led to some great conversations.
Still lacking the solutions!
HOW did I remember that?!
Love this concept, bc at a certain age, the skill takes over and the will's not in charge any more. Sad shift.
Q7: What are ways of using data mid-year to assess your progress as a coach?
Data Wise: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using Assessment Results to Improve Teaching and Learning https://t.co/W6zEVORbB7
I'm not going to like that tweet
A6: what will impact student growth most efficiently & effectively making student achievement & teacher impact the goal
Good answer. https://t.co/cbmGDeEQMd
A5: when it is not used as a growth tool, but as a weapon to discredit a professional.
Will you reply with the magic answers? ;)
A7: One of my goals is what percentage of targeted students make growth during a coaching cycle.
A7 Survey data, individual conversations with teachers, monitoring how many goals have been reached
A6: My highest priority is continuing to build relationships w/Ts
Ha. I really like the framing of the question. Could retire with those answers
A6: keeping moral high, motivating teachers and students, keeping our eye on the prize: student success!
A7: Consider number and quality of coaching interactions and student growth when you have data.
Has to relate to growth mindset and ZPD
Q7 to adjust supports, plan for PD sessions and to highlight successes
A7: my buddy says "data should be used as a flashlight not a hammer". All need to use to reveal opportunities for growth
A7 It's a great time to ask the teachers to rate your effectiveness and model your need for growth, too. https://t.co/3R3N6ySg38
Q7: What are ways of using data mid-year to assess your progress as a coach?

A7 Have gotten much better at having standard reflective conversations a key element of coaching cycle
A7: data can create prime opportunities for the coaching cycle and my favorite model teaching!
Q8: What are questions/wonderings you have about the use of data mid-year?
Yes! Use data as a flashlight to reveal opportunities for growth. Thanks & https://t.co/xSrWS9V8v5
A7: my buddy says "data should be used as a flashlight not a hammer". All need to use to reveal opportunities for growth
Using data to punish is JUST WRONG!
Don't forget to encourage Ts to get S voice & use that data for reflection
Natalie from Louisiana! Instructional and tech coach just signing on. So late, I know... Busy week and had quiz bowl tonight! 😄
Love this! https://t.co/hv4Ta48Hr5
A7: my buddy says "data should be used as a flashlight not a hammer". All need to use to reveal opportunities for growth
That sounds like fun! We're just talking about coaching with mid-year data.
A8: I wonder...are Ts using data to truly drive instruction with laser beam focus?
A8: We were able to ask/answer a lot of questions about multiple sources of data using
Q8: how much is too much? When will students become immune to the short test, making it difficult to trust our data.
A8 Is data the only way to determine the effectiveness of any educator? https://t.co/FlSfyCA2C8
Q8: What are questions/wonderings you have about the use of data mid-year?
A8 How do we get techers to become actively involved in gathering data from students and using it to adjust practice?
Great to see the three of you together. Have to go to sleep. Thank you!
Thanks for your wisdom, Melanie!
and... How do we get teachers to buy in to the importance of students tracking their own data?
Thanks, Melanie. It has been great to have all three of us here! :) Life gets busy.
