The official educational chat of BrainPOP. Like most Twitter chats, BPOPchat is structured around six to seven open-ended guiding questions, so there’s easy entry points for sharing and getting ideas.
Thanks for coming everyone! Please Introduce yourself and in one word share the most important value that you hope to establish during the first few weeks of school. #BPOPchat#SEL
I’m Bryan. I’m an ELT in South Korea. I teach elementary students. The most import value I hope to establish is oracy. I think oracy really goes hand in hand with the type of communication we want to get started with SEL #BPOPchat

Thanks for joining our #BPOPchat on #SEL! Please introduce yourselves. We will post questions with a Q# - you can post and answer the A# 1st question coming up!
Heidi, grade 3 T from MA excited to chat with you tonight. I'm still trying to cool off from the hot day. It's hard to pick just one value- probably trust. I want my Ss to trust me so they can take risks and know I'm there to support them. #bpopchat
A1 - I believe parents are more distracted than ever, and kids come in with fewer SEL skills - also pressure for academic skills younger and younger=less time focused on SEL at younger ages. But no SEL skills=Cannot learn easily. So we have to fill in. #BPOPChat
Q1. Honestly... looking at this through the eyes of a parent. If my children were to grow up and are kind - I know I did my job well. As educators, we need to continue the fine art of kindness #BPOPchat
The #1 reason that students dropout of college isn’t knowledge or cost, but because of SEL issues. I don’t know if we do a good job promoting SEL health, but I think we can do better. #BPOPchat#A1
It is important to embed #SEL into our classroom because in order to prepare the students to be future leaders, we first need to teach them to thrive in their classroom community. #BPopChat
A1: we live in a world where attention is the most precious resource, we need to help kids - and everyone for that matter, manage their attention. technology doesn't help, but ignoring it doesn't help. Modeling a healthy relationship to tech is best. #BPOPchat
A1 By embedding SEL into the classroom, we can maximize the chances that our students will be successful. Like Maslow said, if basic needs aren't met first, learning certainly won't happen. We want kids to enjoy school, but to do that they must feel safe & respected #BPOPchat
A1: SEL teaches students skills for life. These skills prepare students for relationships with others and themselves. They also help students identify and express their needs. #BPOPchat

@Mickeyteacher I 100% agree! When students feel safe they begin to take risks, both personally and academically, that's when the magic happens! #BPOPchat#A1
I always wonder about explicit teaching of #SEL. . . I feel like, 20 years ago, when I was in graduate school for education, that SEL was baked into our teaching practices. . it wasn't a separate domain
#BPOPchat
Many times, there are natural points in a lesson to prompt students to be aware of themselves and others. Spending that time pays dividends when students can work together better. #BPOPchat#A2
A2 Rich discussions and through collaboration in projects. A great time to add design thinking process to make students have a voice and work together! #BPOPchat
I think a huge difference is in the lack of play time allowed in early grades. When I was a child I learned regulation and self control through play! #BPOPchat

A2 By modeling what collaboration looks like, using centers & cooperative activities we provide students w opportunities to practice important social skills like sharing, listening, accepting, showing empathy. This can be done in math, reading, or any other subject. #BPOPchat
A2 Today I introduced a science lesson about the brain (It's our 2nd day of school) which will lead into many lessons relating to growth mindset and determination. Once I get our SSO set up for the years, I plan to assign the determination movie to my students. #BPOPchat
#A2#BPOPchat Having a clear SEL goal for your students helps you develop a lens to teach by. My lens this year is love. Loving yourself, loving others, and loving our world. I have found this useful when teaching across content areas. #SEL#Brainpop
A1: Without feeling safe and welcome, learning will not happen. Therefore, it is vital for students to feel a sense of community, belonging and value to learn. Relationships are key. #BPOP#SEL
A2. Modeling and creating an environment that is safe where failing is acceptable as well as appreciated. Be an active listener. Be a caring adult. Show interest no matter the subject. #BPOPchat
A2 #BPopChat I just was in PBIS Classroom Management training which showed how to teach a subject and play a game looking for desired behavior (positive behavior game) which would be awesome for reinforcing SEL as well.

@MrsShorr Yes! Collaborative work is crucial to developing how to listen, empathize, and compromise, such vital skills for today! We need to bridge the empathy gap! #BPOPchat
A2: Good question, it is part of community building, developing/encouraging student voice, facilitating activities that all students are able to collaborate #BPOPchat
It isn’t a specific topic, but activities, like games. Games like Quandary help put students is difficult but safe situations when working with others. It provides great teaching moments and opportunity for reflection and discussion. #BPOPchat#A3
A2: We should be involving world impacting questions (provide better food access, lessen greenhouse emissions, etc) in STEM and these link to community and social impacts as well as personal well-being issues -sorry I’m late #BPOPChat
A3: As a technology teacher, I love using the digital citizenship topics. I'm able to also discuss with the students how these skills transfer outside of technology as well.
#BPOPchat
#A3#BPOPChat I love the psyh & behavior section. I love starting the year with the #stress video and then using the activity to identify how stress affects the body! Plus #makeamovie + #brainpopcoding allow kids to express what stress is & their solutions for it #SEL
A game you play alongside your lesson. Give a goal what you are looking for, promise a group reward, then as you teach, call out each time you see the behavior. When the goal is reached whole group gets a reward. We had a rock paper scissors tourney as our reward! #BPopchat
agreed - many argue that academic needs can be impossible to meet w/o social needs being met. There are those resilient children though, who may not have stable social support, but excel in academics.
#BPOPchat
A3. I love the videos that show situations that are relatable to kids. When I taught computers I used bullying, cyber bullying, and peer pressure videos. #BPOPchat
@ELLTeacher I actually haven't heard of Harmony, I am excited to check this resource out! Have you tried using it to compliment any BrainPOP activities? #BPOPchat#SEL
A3: I love the way Make-a-Movie allows students to express their emotional reactions to topics-there are a number of topics like bullying, stress, mourning, & peer pressure that address important social connections #BPOPChat

A lot of it is my effort to just connect to things that are meaningful to the students and embed the skills-otherwise they won’t care or retain it. #BPOPChat
A3: make-a-map lends so well to providing opportunities to process ideas allowing for integrating #sel in an environment that kids are comfortable in. #bpopchat
A4: Many beginning lessons are wholly building around getting to know each other so we can feel comfortable sharing in a positive environment. Also a gamified classroom gives some cover and makes connecting fun. #BPOPChat#SEL
A3: make-a-map lends so well to providing opportunities to process ideas allowing for integrating #sel in an environment that kids are comfortable in. #bpopchat
A4: When I taught - morning meeting was the way we supported SEL regularly. I love the resources from @responsiveclassroom Ruth Charney's Teaching Children to Care was my bible! #BPOPchat
A3: make-a-map lends so well to providing opportunities to process ideas allowing for integrating #sel in an environment that kids are comfortable in. #bpopchat
A4: Classroom culture and climate are the foundation. Without a welcoming “family” environment, it is very difficult to honor & support the needs of all Ss. Establish a culture of support, respect & learner autonomy & it can address the heart and soul of Ss. #Bpopchat#sel
A4 #BPopChat - Read alouds focused on kindness, caring, feelings are a big focus for me this year. You Hold Me Up is our "Huskies Care" book of the month. Read Tough Boris to all classes K-5.
A1: Because school isn’t about filling kids with information like they’re buckets, but about creating kind, thoughtful, and committed members of society. #BPOPChat
A4: I try to support #SEL by modeling not only with my Ss, but with my fellow Ts and build a sense of community. I also provide my students opportunities in partners and groups to model SEL as well. #BPOPchat
#A4 It is one of the pillars in our SIP this year. We feel that it is important to build common language and vocabulary when dealing with our students preK-8th. #BPOPchat
A4. When I was in the classroom, I created a culture of collaboration, caring, and communication. It was the vessel of all my projects. I was in the "pit" with my students, learning and loving aside them. #BPOPchat
Vessel for learning and compassion! Love that terminology, Aimee. The climate and culture are huge! Safe environments allow learning and risk! #bpopchat#sel
A4: If I were to design a school from the ground up - to meet c21 challenges, I would prioritize: SEL and information/media literacy . . . everything else hangs upon those competencies. #BPOPchat
We talk often about the lesson and the meta aspects of the lesson. Being in a lab school, I often talk with my students using teacher language. #BPOPchat#A5
With my middle school students I want there to be some transparency on all the different goals of a lesson to be able to have deeper conversations about their learning. #BPOPchat#A5
We have morning meeting also. I love it! We read "Have You Filled A Bucket Today" by Carol McCloud. We talk about filling each other's buckets regularly. Occasionally I assign homework to fill someone's bucket and then share about it the next day. #BPOPchat
A5: I try to model #SEL by showing everyone kindness and compassion. I regularly check on my Ss and ask simple questions. "How are you doing today?" Also, a simple smile goes a long way! #BPOPchat
#A4#BPOPchat One thing I am focused on as I build culture is the type of rules I set. My goal this year to create rules that are valuable beyond class,- "Find Peace and Keep it" + "Choose Happy and Choose Joy" are a few rules that I hope reflect what I value in my students.
A5: One big one is modeling mistakes. I purposefully let kids catch me getting things wrong and model an appropriate response including happily learning to correct my error. #BPOPchat
A5 I try to model by demonstrating our school's core values, along with my own. I also do a lot of thinking out loud, so the children can hear my thoughts prior to my 'out loud' words. I always admit when I make a mistake and show that I learn from them. #BPOPchat
The key word here is MODEL. 100% of the time, as teachers we're on stage, and you need to model behavior. If you're teaching an SEL lesson on compassion, for example, and then an hour later you're not showing any. . .what good does that do?! #BPOPchat
I think it's great that you have and are sharing your core values. At my current school, we push our mission statement where families, students and teachers pretty much all know it. We never do values though. #BPOPchat

Anything to cause reflection and help the student to be self-aware. I’ll often ask two questions to try to help my students see a possible connection. #BPOPchat#A6
One example could be asking how a student feels (such as angry) and what they had for breakfast. Patterns aren’t always evident without help. #BPOPchat#A6
A6: I really love what good literature brings to SEL. A book is a great, safe way to explore many emotions and life struggles through the lens of a character. Literature supports student growth on so many levels. #bpopchat#sel
A5: It's all about the modeling! All day, every day, every minute. Highlighting mistakes made, and emphasizing what can be learned from them. #BPOPchat
I was so excited about the chat, I forgot to answer Q5. A5: Class meetings, circle time and modeling through bibliotherapy and great books! #BPOPchat#SEL

When I was a first grade teacher, students would snap photgraphs of their school experience and have one responsibility - explain why your picture is important. build self awareness
#BPOPchat
#A6#BPOPchat My favorite strategy is letting kids practice! Practice kindness, practice resolutions, let them come up with their own personal solutions, this coupled with teaching #emotions helps my kids become sound in #SEL skills
A6 Last year a colleague showed me a great idea. We had a cloud on a stick, a speech bubble on another. We presented a realistic scenario. Ss would model what they might think, then what they might say. Really got kids thinking about not blurting out initial thoughts! #BPOPchat
A5 a lot of us are talking about making mistakes . . which of course is a by product of taking risks. . . which we want to encourage. But how do you manage risktaking that illustrates really poor judgement?! #BPOPchat
A6. Low-stake peer-to-peer and self reflection. I always took the time to teach my students how to critique one another in a positive way as well as to shed light on how to be empathetic towards one another. #BPOPchat
Helen back in under a personal (not a work) twitter account! Oops. A6 As PBIS Tier 1 Coach, I use PBIS language and frameworks to try to promote awareness of impact on others. We talk a lot about our 3 Be's and Caring. #BPopChat
There are so many wonderful texts out there to support this. I'm a huge fan of the "What do you do with a/an idea.. problem... chance" collection #BPOPchat
A4: Our school has identical peace corners in every room. Students are taught explicitly how to use the tools in them to bring themselves back to baseline and self-regulate. If a student finds themselves disregulated, there’s always a peace corner nearby. #BPOPchat
I once was told "treat others like you want to be treated" did not work with some of our girls from traditional cultures - as these girls often don't EXPECT to be treated well. Hmmmm.... #BPopChat
#BPOPchat this is such a critical aspect of teaching in general. Also being sensitive to the resources available for others. Providing viewpoints in books and in non-fiction, comparing/contrasting results of actions is a careful line to walk when teaching #SEL
A7: I do some early #SEL self-exploration units using a variety of tools from @flipgrid for communication to #MinecraftEdu for constructing the highlights and challenges in their lives #BPOPchat
I love seeing the portfolio building work that Ts and Ss do w/ @Seesaw collecting artifacts and reflections to help demonstrate growth is #SEL gold!
#BPOPchat
Specifically for my students with autism people try to teach eye-contact for behavior rather than focus/attention. We expect eye-contact with adults in the U.S. but it’s disrespectful in some Asian cultures. We need to be informed. #BPOPchat
A7: BrainPop tools support student learning at all levels in all content areas. I also find using Google collaborative tools like documents and slides sometimes give a voice to a learner that would not otherwise share. #bpop#sel
#BPOPchat#A7 Community Service projects have been very successful in helping my kids gain perspective, empathy, and understanding to those around them. Check out these ideas from #RandomActsOfKindnesshttps://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas
Interesting..I hadn't thought of this example before. Altering the words slightly may make a huge difference. 'Treat others as you WISH you would be treated' perhaps? #BPOPchat

A7: Journal prompt bell ringers are one of my favorite ways to get the students not only writing but thinking. Service learning projects also help teach empathy. #BPOPchat
A7: I saw an amazing video the other day - a teacher putting QR codes into paperbacks .. . kids scan them and are given a reaction prompt w/in flipgrid . . .gonna see if i can find it after this chat.

I like to hear that you are doing service projects at your school. It's something that we are talking about but unsure what families might think. I'm interested in learning more from you about it. #BPOPchat
A7 I have seen students respond tremendously to fundraisers for animal shelters, adolpt a whale, etc. Kids WANT to help. I am trying to push students selecting a service project in the community as a PBIS reward this year at least once. #BPopchat
