Maria from southern California, high school T, checking in for first time; using gamification hoping to connect and learn more ways in which to continue growing practice #xplap
What’s up #XPLAP crew? Andrew from SoCal here. 4th-grade teacher in the hive! Happy to be here with all of you! 😊 I'm in the final stages of planning. I've got my theme and most of my mechanics taken care of (e.g., badges, XP, etc.). Now, I just need to map it all out. #xplap

Hey gang! John from DC. High school instructional coach and 11th grade English teacher. Deep in the waters of student centered classroom through #gamification. And fresh off of a guest spot on the latest episode of @mrmatera’s #WellPlayED podcast! #XPLAP
Hi everyone, I'm Noa from Israel. Working for the EdTech Innovation Unit at the Ministry of Education (it's where the magic happens)! I guess I’m an XPlorer rather than an XPert (@MrPowley did you make this pun?) #xplap
Hi all! I’m Stefanie, an instructional technology coach from Illinois. I completed my first full year of gamification in May and did partial game based learning for a couple years before that. #xplap
DianaLyn from TX. Did a whole year game last year and was planning another, but just switched to Digital Learning Coach so I am looking at ways to gameify PD so to bring other teachers on. #XPLAP
✨Hey, #XPLAP Crew! I’m Kimberly from Nebraska, and I teach 7th grade ELA. I would say I’m in the freak out phase!! I’m getting ready to push play on my first year long game! 🎲 ✨
Hello #XPLAP I am Michael Matera

Hi! Holly Swartz from Northern Indiana! I started gamifying in my 1st grade classroom 1/2 way through last year. Now I am starting over as a Digital Integration Specialist. @EdTechintheBend#XPLAP
Q1 is happening on #XPLAP and we need all of you to pitch in.
** Make sure you respond with the right A1- ??? Code from the question. Helps people know where you are at!
A1: 18-year veteran; moving to 6th grade ELA from 9th grade ELA. Love using games in the classroom but haven't gone as far as badges, running point totals, creating an overarching narrative, etc. Reading #XPLAP for inspiration. #gamification
Good evening! Debbie, science teacher from CO. I've developed a theme, levels, a map! I am now creating the story line, how players obtain XP and attempting some items! #xplap
I hope you find it helpful. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to brainstorm. I am still passion about gameification. #XPLAP
A1 I am scared that I don't understand all the terminology and how it all worked together. I don't play games very much, so this is way out of my comfort zone. However, many of my students are gamers and I would love to connect to them! #xplap#gamification
A1: Some local peeps and I did an Explore Like a Pirate book study over the summer both online and in person which really helped me wrap my head around it and got support from my friends! #xplap

a1a ) My first year teaching I didn't gamify, but stumbled across a lot of projects that I wanted the students to do, particularly in my astronomy class. The Ss I taught were pretty fun, so I figured they would like pretending we were trying to live on a different planet #xplap
A1 what scares me the most is a mix of getting the students into it and keeping up with it. I have the rocket, but wondering if it can get me to the moon. Lol #xplap
A1 - landed: really the Twitter community (PLN) was what made me take the complete plunge. Getting to share and learn with the #xplap community was huge, and I felt supported in my journey.
A1-Landing The #XPLAP community is such an amazing resource for me as I look to improve my game, keep up the moral for me and my studnets and push myself to innovate.
A1-launching(yearlong): Figuring out the leveling up system- am I choosing the correct amounts to fit my 2nd graders. AND how/when to give out items- is it only for sidequests or can it be for group challenges. #XPLAP
You know, the ironic thing is that I I don't play games a lot myself. But learning how the elements of games can enhance the classroom environment and learning is an exciting journey. #xplap#gamification
A1-Landed I think hearing Michael talk about gamification at #USMSpark inspired me to start. Hearing him talk about his class and thinking how much I would have loved to be a S in that classroom. Read his book and spent a lot of time planning. It was scary, but Ss love it. #xplap
A1 - Landed...I was inspired by reading Explore Like a Pirate and then did a small 2 week unit I already did and gsmified it. #XPLAP. I loved it as much as the kids and I was hooked
I have some https://t.co/SB0FREshu7 videos about that... Really, don't worry to much... You students will love the ride and so will you. Take that first step! #XPLAP
A1- landed - I think what gave me the courage to start was being frustrated by the way I had been doing things before was boring me... Which meant it probably bored my Ss. I loved games, they loved games... why not. #xplap
a1b) second year, pitched a "the world is ending" scenario to one of my classes, and they really got a kick out of it, so I haven't really looked back since then. #XPLAP
A1 Started gamifying at end of 2016-2017; went to ASCD conference and keynoter inspired, so ventured out with a few choice/rewards/mutliple paths #XPLAP
A1 Landed. I wanted something more engaging for my kids and more fun for me. Thus community along with @mrmatera book Explore Like a Pirate and the #games4ed and #XPLAPcamp broke me out. It was good to not go it alone. #XPLAP
A1. Landed. Was a longtime believer in one-off game-based instruction, but rreading @gcouros#InnovatorsMindset in close succession w/ @mrmatera’s #XPlap brought it all together. Here’s my class site. Please borrow, adapt & modify anything that you’d like! https://t.co/NX0rmZedFY
A1-landed (yes, I answered with both codes): Jump in and try it. I did a mini-gamified unit on fractions and I loved it. My students went crazy over it! #XPLAP
A1 - landed: In terms of the courage, I was seeing all the amazing stuff that the experts were doing. I realized I was already doing a lot of the same stuff. @mrmatera, @tishrich, @HeckAwesome, @hmarrs24, @irvspanish, and @mpilakow have been super helpful along the way. #xplap
A1 It all started with @mrmatera session on #DitchSummit last December. I was hooked, ran out, bought the book, and started watching youtube channels. Then I told my 1st graders about "The Game is Coming Are you ready?" and they held me to it. #xplap
A1-Landed: There just came a point in learning about gamification and what it could be and do for my teaching and my students learning that I could not ignore the incredible potential it had. #XPLAP
A1 ...however just starting the process with this group, the well played vlogs and other resources with inspiration has helped me get over my perfectionist side LANDED #xplap
A1: Landed - In #ChristianEd there are the same issues as traditional school...how do we engage each learner? Seeing the success in my Drama classroom gave me the courage to try it in my Confirmation classroom. #XPlap#LoLfaith#PublicTheology
A1 Started looking for ways to make leveling work; used #OneNote from #MicrosoftEdu to organize levels, linked to badges and points, included empathy rewards, like helping classmates as reward #XPLAP
A1 I am scared that I don't understand it all as I am not an avid gamer. Struggling with a. Narrative to tie all subject matter together. HTML. PHotoshop Photography etc. xplap #gamification#xplap
A1 - Flight Training: Finishing up the #xplap book and bouncing ideas off myself and others in order to see if/how #gamification may fit; John from STL MO 3rd grade jumping in late
A1 landed, my professor in my masters/credentialing program. She was super supportive of my teaching style and helped me settle myself into it without feeling the need conform to the much more traditional style prevalent in the area #XPLAP

The "elements of games" are such a integral part of our every day lives that it almost seems innate. Play, challenge, teamwork, competition...our Ss know it without even realizing it. #XPlap#ChristianEd
Oh and he has landed. @abmoreno1981 has helped many people use #XPLAP in their faith communities. Thanks for taking #Gamification into new directions... Truly believe there are not many places that it wouldn't help!
I've been a creeper on the #xplap chat up to this point. But there seems to be a ton of support among the community, and I've watched/listened/read a tons of great content from @mrmatera#XPLAP
A2-Blastoff) trying to get some mini quiz games created, planning out a map and finding pictures of land types for our different areas of the civilization type game for Earth Science. #XPLAP
I would also add that it took meeting your people and realizing all this “game stuff” you were doing in your classroom wasnt just some crazy idea you made up...its legit and its awesome and there were others of us wh spoke your language!
#xplap
A2-Fueled up: I have website built for the class game that I believe the students will be excited to check out. Plus I began to make trailers for my different units in Social Studies. #xplap
A2-Blastoff- as I'm coming out of the classroom and going into an instructional coaching role, I'm trying to figure out how to bring gamification along with me #xplap
A2-Blast off I am working on building my story. Last year I found that really propelled the students' imaginations. Also adding ideas for games, items, mechanics. Just looking to make it a richer experience. #XPLAP
A2 - Blastoff Doing some tweaking & developing my theme & story more clearly. Currently working on logistics of helping Ss develop their projects & skills throughout the game. #XPLAP
A1: DIPPED MY TOES IN!
I tried a quarter long game, and it was awesome!!! The #XPLAP community and @mrmatera ‘s YouTube Channel combined with his #WellPlayed podcast were lifesavers and creativity boosters! 🎲✨
A1, landed and launching. I found Tisha Richmond's blog and was intrigued so I read Explore Like A Pirate. I am scared that it will fail and the kids won't be excited about it. #XPLAP
#Thankyou I love how our #PLN inspires us to be in motion... Action clearly help us learn! Thanks for always pushing me to do my best and have so so much fun while doing it! #XPLAP
A1-Landed - The #XPLAP book and community helped me jump off. So far it's only leaderboards and items, but the theme is next. Going for a reality gameshow where I'll be the host.
I think a lot of us have that same experience when listening to @mrmatera tell his #gamification story...excited, yet scared! He is a wonderful mix of inspiring and terrifying! :) #XPLAP
A2 Blastoff!: I am handing out these cards during my 6th grade orientation in a couple weeks! Students can then go to a link and explore their world! #xplap
A2 - Blastoff: I'm definitely using this prelaunch time to finish the touches on connecting all my mechanics. I'm also creating in-game features right now. Here is a glimpse of what I am working on with a Fortnite theme. https://t.co/feaHMH3vOz#XPLAP
A2 - Blasting Off - In other news... I have been writing down most of my half-baked ideas on my https://t.co/4GYFrLQPOX blog. Need help baking some of them I think... #XPLAP
A2 Fueling Up - I literally just sent out postcards intoducing my incoming students to the fame/theme today...there is a hidden link on it to complete a survey. Then I’m planning the first week with team building #XPLAP
A2-Blastoff. Trying to create side quests for my units throughout the year. Wondering how I want my in-class leaderboard to look like as I didn't incorporate one last year. #XPLAP
I am only a board gamer and that only when I can find people to join me. Get separated with some vpbasic ideas from this community and then have your kids add to it. Have the theme be something you are excited about. Then you’ll find ways to tie the content to it. #XPLAP
A1 - Landed: Really just wanted to challenge myself to grow as a teacher & look to increase engagement. I think knowing it would result in some setbacks helped me feel comfortable when things didn’t quite go as planned. #XPLAP
A2: I have created a movie trailer & intro slides to the game. I also have TONS of ideas. I've ordered my students magnifying glasses & detective notebooks because they're part of the Fairy Tale Force-fairy tale detectives trying to save the happy endings that were stolen. #XPLAP
A2 Fueling up Allegiances (houses) will be DC or Marvel, tech gurus will be Iron Man or Batman, materials people will be Spider Man or the Flash, overall class helpers will be Capt America or Superman each character will have certain abilities #xplap
A2-FuellingUp - Theme and side-games are up next. I have most of the course done digitally, and an auto-grading feature that goes straight to the leaderboard. Next up is how the gameshow proceeds. A combo of Apprentice/Big Brother/HQ Trivia perhaps? #xplap
A1- #xplap I have always enjoyed gaming myself be it video game or DnD sessions and I have always looked for ways to connect to my students to help them gains deeper knowledge of history
A2 Using time to develop narratives and choices within narratives, then trying to figure out how to integrate multiple paths; having structure in #OneNote from last year helps #xplap
A2-Blastoff - I am with some great company here taking on different roles outside of the class and bringing it along with us. #XPLAP So many teachers have been given the gamification can change your classroom speech and left taking pics of your book. Some I just met.
A2 - Blasting Off - In other news... I have been writing down most of my half-baked ideas on my https://t.co/4GYFrLQPOX blog. Need help baking some of them I think... #XPLAP
A2 Landed: I’m designing a platform for Israeli Ts to use for free to gamify their lessons. It’s called GameMorim (gamer Ts) https://t.co/Gd3m8bR3WF#xplap
Friends! Just picked my daughter up from airport tonight from her month long adventures in Peru and lost track of time! So sorry I missed the chat!#XPLAP
A2 - Blasting Off - In other news... I have been writing down most of my half-baked ideas on my https://t.co/4GYFrLQPOX blog. Need help baking some of them I think... #XPLAP
A2. Blastoff! Putting the finishing touches on my welcome game to introduce our yearlong theme of @DreamRushEDU: The Race for the American Dream. Pioneer wagon train teams competing for gold, silver, bronze & oil through 400 years of literature. https://t.co/SCG0Cm7bCd#xplap
A3 - NASABrief All the support in the community as well as the great resources from @mrmatera have made me feel more comfortable. And just looking at the numbers on students gaming #XPLAP
Sooo true. When I got stuck last year in my first year long game so may people answere my call for inspiration. I created a doc with ideas from this family. #XPLAP
A2 Blast Off I am working on making my game less game board like and more galaxy and meta. I am also working on adding visual support to help students continue to improve and build their gamers mindset. #XPLAP
A2 blastoff: since my roll has changed, I’m trying to gamify PD, and @MeehanEDUhas been a huge help as you can see from what he has been sharing! #xplap
A2: Blastoff - As a pastor, I am pretty lucky! The bible gives me theme, character, story, conflict, items...I am spending my time going through it picking out new and fun things to add, places to go, and characters to be. #XPlap#ChristianEd
A3 Satellite I think I discovered the impact of story on students' enthusiasm. Also discovered that some aspects of the game, like side quests, were easy to come up with on the fly as the game went on. #XPLAP
A2 I am still working on a theme and story line for my classroom. I am also trying to figure out what kind of badges and items I want to give. #xplap#gamification
A3 satellite - that administration and fellow staff may not always “get it” or even be supportive so having data to back it up is good. Also ever lose sight of the amazing no traditional learning that you see taking place in your class when faced with GBL doubters #XPLAP
A3-satellite) there are lots of people who have similar thoughts on education as me, and who want to bring fun into the classroom to help Ss get the best experience they can (this was huge for me at the time I found #XPLAP)
Q2-Landed...I am in the process of creating a story theme, making card items as well as level cards for students item chests and connecting my super improver board to the new story line. I am trying to keep thing in balance and allow myself to get the basics 😀@mrmatera#xplap
A3-NASABrief what is making me feel confident for this upcoming trial into gamification is my site and all the effort I put into it. I think it will have a positive impact. https://t.co/ene8iuK4nd#xplap
A3-satellite: Gamifying your units/classroom is the best of lesson design- working backward with the goal in mind & thinking of all 4Cs to make it interactive & engaging. #XPLAP
A3-Satellite: I think I found the courage to embrace my inner nerd & be more “real” in front of my students. I stopped being afraid of mistakes & began to focus more on the process & journey. It’s made me a more reflective teacher. #XPLAP
A3 NASABrief: These #XPLAP chats, being part of a book study and of course finally getting to read (almost finished) the book have made it much easier to consider a plan
A3-Satellite. I learned that the students know a lot more game mechanics than I would have guessed. They picked up the game so quickly and that was with my work-in-progress-try-and-survive first year of teaching. I can't wait to use what I learned during this school year. #XPLAP
A3: I feel ready thanks to @tishrich's ISTE presentation, @mrmatera's book, and @hmarrs24's willingness to share her ideas! I'm also feeling reading thanks to this amazing community! #XPLAP
A3-Satalite: By taking that first step, I realized that I could increase student engagment and motivation beyond what I could do without #gamification. This has been absolutely amazing in terms of looking at the quantitative/qualitative data prior/post to #gamification. #XPLAP
A2-fueling up. I have created the theme and story line for my Baking and Pastry class. I started thinking about side quests and printed off the badges. Trying to figure out how to roll this out the first free days off class. #XPLAP
A3-Satellite - I discovered that gamification and the idea of play is what is needed to make my courses work and give students what the need. I don't think I can go back to the "old" way knowing what I know now. #xplap
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!!!
#TeacherMyth chat on July 31st is the LAST CHAT at the current time (9:00-9:30 pm CST).
Starting in August, #TeacherMyth chat will move up 30 minutes to 8:30-9:00pm CST!
It's a little earlier for our East coast friends, and you can #XPLAP chat now, too!
A3 "Hey, you tricked me into learning," from senior trying to stay in senioritis; need to be authentic in narratives, not cheesy, also struggling with how to switch up #xplap
A3-NASAbrief....I can’t say it enough but getting involved with the #XPLAP community here has been so helpful. I’ve stolen tons of ideas and tweaked websites and resources you’ve all shared...so helpful
A3. Satellite. Enthusiasm is infectious! Students really appreciate it when they see you trying something new with their best interest in mind. Players become co-creators and even though we’re all working *much* harder, it really doesn’t feel like work at all. #XPLAP
Well... My theme came to be mainly due to the novel series I teach. I teach the Crispin series by Avi which take place in 1377. I then developed a story where my students are from the future and have to go back to 1377 to save their world! #xplap
Good advice! I was lucky to have a supportive principal who saw @mrmatera at #USMSpark too. I would add that inviting others to see your class in action will help others get what it's all about. #XPLAP
So much good, but my biggest take away from last year is gamifying my class gave me a way to creat and deepens relationships that I didn’t have before. It also created and deepened relationships in my class between kids. #XPLAP
A3 satellite: I discovered that games really do unite us, all of us. Ss respect what you’re doing and are okay with it not being perfect, as long as you’re upfront and honest with them. Your passion = invested Ss. It’s a change I wish I would’ve jumped fully into sooner. #xplap
A3: Satellite - The elements of gaming really do transcend the walls of our school classrooms. Any learning can be gamified, and when the bold first step is taken all ages will be drawn in and engage! #CrossGen#ChristianEd#XPlap
A3- satellite I think the biggest thing I deicovered by starting is that even students who do not seem to be gamers will enjoy that you are working to give them more in your classroom than just a basic worksheet #xplap@mrmatera

A3 - Satalite - Never really sure how to answer this one. I think that my biggest lesson was that just because something is good for you it does not have to be boring or painful. School can be Fun! #XPLAP
Thanks for the fun chat @mrmatera! I should get you a Live Chat list for #HiveSummit tonight! (Still have room to add co-hosts if anyone is interested!) #XPLAP
Too often we cannot look to the teachers within our own building, so we need a strong #PLN in the Twitterverse! As a pastor, I definitely need "outside" support and inspiration! It is the good and bad thing about being truly innovative within one's field! #XPLAP

@PerkyScience, @HeckAwesome, @StacieBulloch
A3 - Satalite - I discovered that even the Littles LOVE a gamified class (I had some GAMERS who helped develop our game). It made classroom management easier, and gave the Ss a drive to accomplish things. (no one wanted school to end)! #xplap
The #HiveSummit digital conference starts 8/1 - sign up at https://t.co/kcvmLaHGvu to learn how to level up for the 18-19 school year! Lots of great names on the presenter list - now's the time to join this supportive and skilled professional learning tribe 🐝
Thank you!!! I spent a bit of the summer at @SeriousPlayConf getting my level 1 #gamification certification studying under @monicacornetti. A cohesive theme & a compelling story really are the backbone to any great game! (Of course, splashy visuals don’t hurt) 😎 #xplap

Yes! Please feel free to reach out to me or any from the #xplap community! I would love to help you get your game off the ground!!
Ps. Mythology could spark an amazing game! Love it!!
I may be interested. Might also be good to be a co-host. I’d love to chat about this tomorrow when I’m not on pain meds from oral surgery. (thinking that will be a better idea) #XPLAP
the explore like a pirate book is a great place to start. Also could probably ask about anyone in this chat any questions anytime you have them, super supportive people. also could check out the hive summit. #XPLAP
Thanks for the fun chat @mrmatera! I should get you a Live Chat list for #HiveSummit tonight! (Still have room to add co-hosts if anyone is interested!) #XPLAP
Finally, I don't have to feel guilty about playing Skyrim every night after the kids went to bed this summer. I'm not wasting time; I'm researching how to #xplap
