Good evening! Tonight's #Edchat topic: Is personalized learning practical and worth pursuing for your students, or should it be limited to a focus on your own professional development?
Good Evening! Meredith joining from SW Florida. #TropicalStormGordon moved through yesterday and left lots of rain but the FL sunshine took care of most of that today. #edchat

Happening now: #Edchat topic: Is personalized learning practical and worth pursuing for your students, or should it be limited to a focus on your own professional development?
Personalized learning could definitely make a difference in student engagement. It would be most important to have student as part of the decision making process. #edchat

Hi Meredith! I read the topic as should we have PL for students or for ourselves (professional development)? I could be wrong, but that was my interpretation.... #Edchat

I would agree, this seems better served at the HS level. Students really need to be a part of the conversation for it to be personalized. However, goals can still be developed at younger age levels . . . and should. #edchat
Welcome to #edchat (a little late!) Topic: Is personalized learning practical and worth pursuing for your students, or should it be limited to a focus on your own professional development?
Dr. Weston: Can we clarify, does the question mean that we (the practitioner) would be engaged in the learning for the purpose of application to the classroom (now) or to "sharpen the saw" of our own pedagogy with potential return down the road? Is my question clear? #edchat
Having started in education working in a special education setting all learning was personalized for students. At that time, I didn't think much about extending my own learning past what I learned in college - but that was 1977. #edchat
Curious where this discussion will head to. I’m retired but do sub so my Learning is how I design it for myself. Faige substitute teacher in Los Angeles #edchat
...regarding learning, should teachers apply the best practices to students and to themselves? What's up with the double standard? #edchat@sgthomas1973@blairteach
In 1977 there were very few professional books written for teachers beyond what were used by professors and journals were not widely read except also by those professors. We had to go to the library to read them. Times certainly have changed! #edchat
I set goals with students based on their ACCESS scores, but we still have mandated curriculum. There really isn't much room to personalize their learning. #Edchat
If personalized learning is the ideal world, I think we should always move in that direction. When you DO have flexibility in text, output, or mode of instruction, why wouldn't you give your students voice and choice? #EdChat#itsaboutthekids#facilitatingisteaching
Common misconception about school shootings: School shooters are mentally ill. Research says: Mental illness alone doesn't explain school shooting perpetrators. Shootings involve personal, social, & familial factors. https://t.co/wyYtCfrBQn#schoolsafety#edchat
Teachers have more agency in their own learning than students, due to mandated curriculum. My district mandates Professional Learning, but I pursue more personalized PL on my own. #Edchat
Yes and no, maybe, sometimes :) We are self actualized adult learners capable of pursuing our own interests, and often recognizing our own needs. Children will need to be moved in this direction. #EdChat
I think their is. My reading curriculum talks about figurative language and main idea there a million books to personalize these skills to what they want to read #edchat
Lakota Professional Development Day under way! Thank you @Lakota_Learning for reminding us that it is not a choice but an obligation to be RELENTLESS in reaching every child! ❤️

Personalized learning would welcome different methods of assessment. Maybe student choice in how they demonstrate mastery. For younger ages, it could be as simple as choosing from a list of different projects. #edchat It could look quite different across K-12.
What happens when someone moves outside of that very specific curriculum? Who decided that Lucy Calkins approach meets the needs of all learners? Is it individualized? #edchat
I think the operative word is "personal" and we might de-personalize the learning if we have not considered first the person who might learning. This sounds like a lot of jabberwocky, but the person here must be considered first. If to be "person"-al. #edchat
When it comes to learning and teaching the field of education has plenty of evidence about WHAT WORKS WELL...but for some reason those practices are rarely commonplace or employed schoolwide. Why? #edchat
What is interesting is that we have that program which doesn't actually align with the curriculum. Ts are struggling to cover curriculum using these programs. #Edchat

So many "programs" are followed as a few attend a conference or presentation and jump in with both feet and entire schools or districts suddenly are following that approach. I look forward to this trend being extinguished! #edchat
"Busysheets isolate skills so much that students have trouble connecting them to real life. When a student sees little value in an activity, he is not truly engaged" https://t.co/PTPgsPmBBq#EdChat#EngChat@cultofpedagogy
Well, yes, it's always personal as the result is the mental model that the learner constructs in response to our actions. However, we can better serve the student by constructing the learning experience to integrate with and extend their personal mental model. #EdChat
If you have a chance, check out some #g2great chats More and more teachers are looking at their students and seeing what would work for them #edchat There is leeway and modifocation in both reading and writing

Without student self-reflection, the learning isn't really personalized. Students need to understand weaker areas if they are to overcome those areas. This leads to collaboration between teacher, student, and guardian. #edchat

The district's learning is mostly T-driven. Want to learn tech? ESOL endorsement? Gifted endorsement? They offer it. Within those classes, I don't know how much is differentiated. #Edchat
Not about her but about reading and writing with guests discussing their books and how Ts implement R & W in their classrooms #edchat I’ve learned so much and share with colleagues

I love the idea of Genius Hour. I've tried to implement it in my classroom in two different years, but then I was always pulled so Ss never got to finish their projects. :( #Edchat

Big fan of personalised learning, but remember some teachers have 400-500 students a week. Sometimes, the personalised part, might be trying to learn all those faces and names. #edchat It's part of #LOTE#teacherlife
Well, if we all follow the script and Teacher A has better test scores than Teacher B, than Teacher A is a better teacher and deserves more pay. This is what it seems to boil down to. #Edchat
Things like genius hour are great, but building in little bits of what they want to know throughout day is helpful to...stopping and exploring their questions or 💡 show it isn’t just a designated time #edchat
to steal an idea from @garystager ... all learning is personal. Maybe the bigger question ... Is what we are teaching kids of any value you them? Can't be personal if they don't care about it. #edchat
How wonderful. Our kinders were amazing. Now when I sub and we have geniushour (my favorite when I’m in 1st grade & K) it’s my best learning seeing how and what they do. #edchat

#edchat I've opted for more boutique teaching, only 200 odd students a week. There are times were the learning is more generalised, especially in group work, where the art of compromise needs practicing. Let's face it group work is part of work life. #personalizedlearning

Two years ago, I was saying “do you have any questions?”. Last year I switched to “what questions do you have?” It made a difference. Today I tried “ask me two questions”. And they did! And those ?s led to more ?s. It amazes me that the littlest things have such a big impact!

I don't get this mentality. Once taught same class as another T who made it a competition, well, she was competing. She test prepped those kids all year ... followed all the "Best Practices" .. I listened to the kids gave like one quiz all year. Same result on state test #edchat

I have a lot more flexibility, since I'm ESOL. I also try to extend that to my push-in Ts, but a lot of them are scared of bad evals. Like I said, it has been a ROUGH start. #Edchat
